You guys need to have a race using DM3s. Sure, it's not steam engines, but it's one of the most involved engines to run for the diesels.
Or... Double-Heading with S060 and DM3.
Dm3 is another good option i forgot
DM3s are fun to run but kinda slow. The hard part is not screwing up and damaging them.
Make it a race that starts with a pick-up shunt and ends with a drop-off shunt and the freight haul of those in between. Ideally, prepare this, accept the jobs, save and send kAN the save file over.
If they ever add loco upgrades, they should definitely add a feedwater heater for the steamers
I doubt they’d add upgrades but that could be a cool mod idea

The S282 has a feedwater heater modeled as part of the sim already, although it isn't visible on the model. The S060 does not. By the by, the S282 is also superheated, while the S060 operates on saturated steam.
definitely the most brutal challenge in the valley, getting out of the coal mine. Hope kAN gets the 282 soon so you guys can have a real race! ALL THE BEANS!

This was really fun to watch, and I can't wait to see more of this series! I particularly enjoy the "Kenosha Moments" They really add to the challenges
Also, somebody tell kAN that the blower also uses steam. I have a feeling that he turned it on and sort of forgot about it and ended up dumping a bunch of steam out the stack.
Idea for race with mods: kAN and Hyce race; kAN has to use the S282 to haul a train of iron ore from Iron Mine West to the Steel Mill via Food Factory, and Hyce had to haul a train of logs from Forest South to the Sawmill. However, Hyce is only allowed to use the Shay.

If you guys are doing more of these you can try City SW to Food Factory. Starts out with a relatively easy hill then it levels out to completely flat with loads of tight curves along a deep valley. Finishes with a short, steep downhill towards the yard at FF. You could run it the other way but then it might be too similar to Coal mine with the steep hill after the start though you end with a long straight and fast downhill (speed limit 10 or 12) leading into a dead end yard.
Alternatively for a different vibe, run from Forest Central to Saw mill. This requires either shoving over the road or running around the train at Farm. This allows for different strategies between contestants :D
Ah more Derail Valley carnage from Hyce. Not only multiple grenaded steam engines but an 060 modern art installation across the main.

Oh what a feeling the throttle's on the ceiling.
Another good race is logs from Forest Central to Sawmill Using S060 or the DM3. Those two climbs have bested me so many times.
I work with a rule of thumb of "No more than 200t per axle." And that sees me right most of the time.
I Remember my first run out of the coal mine. It will be easy I thought, it's mostly down hill I thought. Oh how wrong I was. I also learned that different locomotives respond to throttle differently.
(Spoilers for my story, but Diesel Electrics will cook themselves to death at high throttle settings, but slow speeds, while diesel hydraulics will be able to stabilize themselves near, though not at, full throttle).
The story is I was trying to haul about 2,000 tons to coal from the mine to the steel mill I had a DH4 with me from a previous job and a DE6 the game had kindly spawned in for me, and I had just got the license for. According to the tonnage charts online I should be good to go so I set the jobs up turned them in and headed out using the DE6 as power, facing out the mine, and the DH4 on standby, facing towards the cars. Problems started almost immediately as the grade out of the mine just killed my speed. At first I tried adding throttle on the DE6 to combat this but it just over heated. I pulled out my remote and throttled up the DH4 but that didn't help, in fact it made things worse and I realized I left the reverser in the locomotive in forwards, when it should be in reverse given its facing and direction of travel. I tried to fix that mistake but the reverser was locked in position until the locomotive had come to a stop so I gave up on attempt one, rolled down the hill in defeat. Attempt number 2 I gave myself a nice big run up and MUed the locomotives to avoid a repeat of last attempt's reverser mishap. I ran at the hill again and this time things were looking more promising, but still not great, I was still losing speed and the grade was not letting up any time soon. I needed more power to make decided to look back at the DH4 to see if there was more to be had and sure enough it could contribute a lot more to this effort so I throttled it up to get more power. I had only few seconds to revel in my genius before an alarm bell went off and blue flash erupted from behind me, the DE6's traction motors blew. I tried to save the attempt by flipping the TM breaker back on, but it was no use, the train had dang near stalled on the hill, and the DH4 was starting to overheat, a 3rd attempt was going to be needed. For my 3rd Attempt all motive power was still in working order, so I had that going for me which was nice, I also decided to revert back to my original plan of RCing the DH4 and not MUing the power because that seemed to be the root of attempt 2's problems. I took a nice big run up and set off on attempt 3 as I climbed the hill I found the DE6 Liked to stick to lower throttle sets while the DH4 was happy screaming up the hill nearly at full throttle. With that combination I made it up the hill just fine and made it to the steel mill intact. I did miss the time bonus on some, if not all of the jobs unfortunately.
Glad I kept those post-its! Very funny to switch back to your audio at one point and immediately hear Kenosha reaching its crescendo.

With that said: now lets watch this accident in early development.
FYI: S060 and S282 both have a minimum cutoff of 6% due to valve lead, and a maximum cutoff of 90% when in the corner.

I did this on my own sandbox with 4 hopper cars (all loaded) and an S060, and I managed this in 30 minutes and finished with about half a tank of water and a bit under half a bunker of coal left. I waited until the S060 passed 14 bar with almost full sight glass before leaving the yard, and varied the gun a bit depending on the grade on the hill (more on shallower) so I maintained pressure and didn’t have to stop on the hill to build pressure or water. That extra pressure meant I kept the speed up higher, which meant enough chuffs to keep the fire drafting better, which helped keep steam pressure up more to keep me going even more. Not having to go slow or start on the hill meant I kept the bar hooked up more and didn’t need to use as much steam or coal. It was still only at 9 bar going over the crest of the hill and I needed the bar in the corner there, but it made it at close to 30kph.
Nice! Yeah, I think that was my lesson learned. Need to hit it with more water.
No one expects the Spanish Kenosha
I will fully admit I am not as good (or reckless :D) a steam driver at DV as you are, but I tried this same run by going around the loop and hitting the bottom of the grade at about 35kph. I stalled out at about the same steep point right before the crest as you did the first time with 7 bar left. That is definitely a tall order for the little guy.

This video was so laden with Smells Like Kenosha that it's a fire hazard, if it wasn't for all the cups for testing it would have blown up!
These are so much fun, the editing is on point and both contestants just delivers gold every time.
The music are now so integral to watching railroad content that it just feels wrong without it, especially when it's used in conjunction with what's going on in the video.
Explosions will be a jump scare now, because Smells Like Kenosha wasn't already playing, that's how much of a Pavlovian response Hyce has conditioned me to at least.
But can kAN beat Hyce racing diesels against steam?
Or would that just be even more stacked in Hyce's favor?
Would it be better if kAN had the 2-8-2 and Hyce had the 0-6-0?
Or both in 2-8-2's but kAN has the wheel mod and Hyce has to be running stock config?
But kAN sounded a bit cocky about his own skills after both races, perhaps a cross map test would be a great test of the learned skills?

14:10 Yeahhhhh, found that out myself. Best bet, which I'm pretty sure you've mentioned multiple times: DON'T OPEN THE INJECTOR IF THE GLASS IS EMPTY. Dump the fire, wait for it to cool down, THEN put water in and pray that you can restart the fire fast enough to get moving.
Technically when you fill the firebox the coal burns very inefficient and that is why there is black smoke, if you are running with white/grey you are effectively stoking the fire with minimal waste
Partly is going to depend on the quality of the coal. Low quality coal is going to smoke basically regardless.
Also, if it’s going to be working hard it will pull a lot of draft through the firebox along with it needing a lot of heat. So, you’ll want to keep it pretty loaded with coal so there’s enough there to provide heat and not burn out.

I remember the first time i messed with the S060 I sware i overfilled the sight glass way too many times. That thing hated me because i had no idea what I was doing but now having more knowledge on how to drive it in this game it is a lot of fun.

If you run of of pressure shut regulator off and slame breaks on, prep fire snd water well steam rebulds, then release breaks and "send it" if you can't start on that grade let it role back to a lower grade and start then
(Irl you can put breaks on rear, pause to resest tention, then rip regulator to full and release break)
In the event you need to shut down or out of water open the greates and dump fire
then pee in a cup because it exsploded

Only use regulator when your trying to move, if you have momentiom from say going down a big hill you can turn it off to prevent derail and useage of steam (and thus its creation eg lots of coal and water) but open every so often to alow lube and maintain speed

This was great fun watching both videos at the same time.
As an FYI, standard difficulty in career allows the third person views and the F4 controls. It's more forgiving than realistic in some ways, but the payments are lower because one can theoretically use some automation for coupling etc. I still need to try the steam engines. Just not sure about all the coordination, and I don't like the reduced visibility, part of the fun for me is looking out the window at the scenery.
At least until reaching oil well central while hauling 1500 tonnes of explodie hazmat and not noticing the switch is lined to an outbound track...
I'm realistic-ing my way through career until I've done it all, from there I plan to change to standard. Lol.
My main career mode is in realistic as well. I want to get through it, then a custom difficulty that is mostly realistic, but allows for the third person views and maybe the arrow on the map so long trains with caboose show the tail end. @@Hyce777
@@Hyce777 You should just use custom settings and you could already do that by just dumping a 100% licenses savegame in your save folder. At least for fixing that teleport thing in your career. You have paid enough respect already ;)
I grinned all the way through. Y'all are too funny. I don't have two monitors (damn cheap laptop graphics card) so will have to go watch it again from kAN's channel and see the fun from his side. Love watching your shenanigans. If I ever get DV myself (hoping!) I'll be going back to these to figure out how to run the digital choo choos.

I do have 2 monitors, but still am too lazy to write an autohotkey script that repeats the keyboard inputs onto the second window for sync playing and pausing (for hacking my hot takes into the thing) XD
You really need to get DV... and eventually a VR setup, 'cos it's even better in VR (same goes for flight sims) :)

Next race ideas: 800t s282 in a rain, from harbour to somewhere like food factory, with a some scrap job to dump in a steel mill. OOOORRR 2x s282 and 2000t train from harbour. I have made it few times. Is challenging, but rewarding as well :)

These are great! I learn a couple neat steam details in each one, and it’s fun to watch Kan learn. 282s next! Harbour to military is my favourite, a couple nasty climbs with some fast running in between. The iron mine by the machine factory is also a pretty challenging trip. Love the banter between you guys!

I've had the S060 Johnson Bar set to near center, -4% on reverse, and it'll actively slow down and eventually begin reversing. Kicking at Machine Factory taught me this.
A fun thing to do with these races is after watching it to give it a try myself. I restart the video and start at the same time they do with the same setup. Managed to validate with a time of 35:42, no derail, no explosions, no reloading. So just over a minute slower than Hyce, but safer. Thought I could make the climb out of Coal Mine without stopping by backing up and getting a run up at it, but it was still not enough. I think it can be done though.
Back up the job you take out of the mine - literally backwards. And then take the reverse loop with as much speed as possible and give it all the beanz as soon as possible. Probably the best way to do the run up.
Recently I visited the Colorado Railroad Museum,when there you gave me a small tour about the diesel locomotive that you were on.That was amazing,no one else had managed to peak my interest in diesel locomotives before and you were the first one
You guys do realise that the S060 is based on an American locomotive right? It's a US Army Transport Corps S100, hundreds of the things were built during WW2 and were exported across the world. Loads of European Railways bought them after the war and some examples used by the Yugoslav Railways were until recently working in coal mines in Serbia.

The threshhold for the accelerated time scaling for starting up is 9 bars, and it activates if you stop, so the pressure really does shoot upward if you run low and stop. Useful but not realistic, obviously.
For the next race have you and kAN use the 2-8-2 start a job from the harbor and do a loop around the map race
Make this a series YYEEESSSS, also at some point both of you guys running the mod that lets you change wheel arrangement on the fly.
You guys should do something similar but with the DM3!
Anyone else wanting to see the chaos of these two trying their damndest to double head the S282 out of the coal mine with a near tonnage load should anyone make a proper good multiplayer mod?
I'd love to see them do a tug o' war with a bunch (like 2 or 3) of o6os at each end, trying keep all the power in without breaking things while having to do the cabin hopping XD

Hyce to Derail Valley God's: I know it sounded like I said I need SOME S060 but what I actually meant was I need ALL of the S060 engines for this video.
This was definitely a hilarious one to watch and obviously Hyce managed to once again help but also sabotage kAN in the race can confirm lol. I love seeing you guys steam engine race but I'm curious are you guys going to try other challenging loco configurations. Such as the DM3 which of course is manual transmission or a super long train with DE2. Either way I am all for these races they're so much fun to watch, especially when Hyce gets "bored" at the end.

While not quite as steep, coming out of Forest Central is a fairly technical piece of track, and logs are pretty high tonnage. That could make for a fun race to the sawmill with either the 060 or the DM3!
...or even one of the higher power locos if there's enough large jobs available.
I have not tested this, but I would imagine it's possible to guarantee identical jobs with a bit of setup: have one runner go to a station and spawn a locomotive in front of a job, save, and then send a copy of that save to any other runners. I would imagine the state of the game would be identical between each player, since the game seems to refresh jobs and yard states based on player location.
True for the save game thing. He could even just accept the job(s), save and give it to kAN then. They'll both have the exact same timer running then.
While steaming keep the doors closed as much as possible as it cools the boiler and you don't need the blower when the engine is running as the exhaust steam provides the draft.

hey if you guys cant find a similar enough job you can use the custom scenario setup to just start a save on whateever track with almost whatever consist you want. only thing it wont do is make that consist a job.
I love doing the race with you guys while wathcing the video and its really fun being just a hair faster (although i also had my flaws aka too much brakes)
An interesting fact about the drawbar on European rolling stock is that it’s at least in Sweden the hooks for the chain link couplers is actually connected and you don’t pull on the car itself but just the drawbar that is connected to the car via a spring. I can post a picture showing how it works in the engine crew chat in discord.

I think it could be fun to see you both do a race to 1million. Idk how to make sure it starts on even ground, but the goal would be to be the first one to have 1million in their wallet.
you guys should spawn s060s with a few cars of iron at the slug shed and try to run to the bottom, and measure the winner by least derails instead of time

Parallel to watching the video I tried this challenge myself, and I managed to not blow up or stall and do it in 28:11min, but I also noticed you guys were running 4 cars of coal while I was running only 3, so that's probably why it was so easy for me.. Have to try this again sometime with 4 coal cars.
Honestly, when you pop the safeties on the hill, you have steam to play around with. Playing TS, especially on the Granfield Branch Line with a 1 in 77 grade between Inchcombe and Thenhill, watching everyone try that with a heavy train of wagons and an underpowered loco is funny.
Love these races ! You guys should try something down the bottom left corner of the map with all the slow twisty unexpectedly steep bits.

Hyce when He said "I need to turn on two valves right" in the previous video You said "Yes" but He actually turned on the valves on The Dynamo and the air Compressor but not the mechanical lubricator so He though His train was ready to depart the harbor and town but if You said" three" valves then He would've remembered to turn on the mechanical lubricator and if You told Him that. then He wouldn't have been forced to stop His train after He heard the ringing sound
