    Something about Hirohito. The emperor wasn't just a figurehead back in the 1930s; Hirohito essentially just chose to be one. He could've wielded significant power in the government, but he essentially chose not to. The reason he's considered to be implicit in Japan's wars is because while he didn't order them, he didn't stop them. The Imperial Japanese Army was full of hotheads, but they were hotheads fiercely loyal to the emperor.

    • @hotwax9376
      @hotwax9376 Рік тому +1

      Even if that's true, the point remains that the emperor's constitutional role was actually reduced to a ceremonial figurehead as a matter of law, so he couldn't be anything more than a constitutional monarch at that point even if he wanted to.

    Just a quick addendum on Edward VIII. The main reason he wasn't allowed to marry Wallis Simpson was that in Britain, the monarch is also the head of the Church of England. And at the time, the Church was against divorce, so it was seen as an abdication of his monarchical duties.

    Cho En Lai is still very much regarded in the same way as how J.J. described the Western society regarded him in China. After his death, thousands gathered at Tiananmen Square to pay respects and protest against the Mao-style regime. This event would contribute to the toppling of Mao’s legacy, and foreshadowed the Tiananmen Square protests in 1989.

      @@jamesstuart3536 Furthermore, Dr. Sun's portrait is routinely displayed on national day on 10/1 and workers' day on 5/1 on Tiananmen square, opposite facing Mao's portrait on the Tiananmen gate. I believe the message is to portray the PRC government as the legitimate heir of modern Chinese revolution. Mao and Chiang regarded themselves to be pupils of Sun Yat sen and having Mao's portrait face Sun on the square on major holidays almost seems he's 'reporting' to the master, as if saying, 'today's China is as you envisioned'. Of course, whether or not this respect is genuine or just an ostensible message is up to anyone to debate or support.

    I watched this with my daughter (you may remember her, she was inspired to draw the last ten presidents after your video and I emailed you the results) and she was excited to see this. While she’s not a history geek like me, she said the cartoons really helped her learn who the people are (she’s in grade 11, so no doubt they’re learning some of these names in school), moreso that a photograph would.

    Fun fact: My grandparents worked in Moscow from 1978 until 1981 for the Australian Embassy to the Soviet Union. They would talk about how sad life was there, especially coming from people who came from Australia like my family. My Grandpa is a photographer, even back then, and I have some photos he had taken in my house today and there's one in particular that catches my eye. It's at Red Square and the streets are filled with people wearing thick, ruined clothes with not a single car on the street they're walking next to. Back in the Brezhnev era Russian life was just so poor and peoples lives were miserable. Makes you realize how grateful we are to be living in countries like Canada, or Australia.
    Anyway, a great video JJ and you should really keep going with this!

      My grandparents (they weren't foreign diplomats from the Wrst, they were local soviet workers and teachers from Belarus and Siberia) remember Breznev period such as a good time. There was social state: all people could get free apartments, healthcare, education. All people could find job without problem. Russian people apreaciate it. Of course, problems existed, Soviet Union wasn't a paradise. For example, you said about single cars. Yes, Soviet Government didn't want to see the situatuon like in the USA, where everybody has got cars. Instead, Soviet Government built many bus, trolleybus, tramway, railway systems. This systems were more comfortable and ecological. Russian cities didn't know problem with traffic, like now.

    Anyone else doing a video showing off their drawings from high school would be terrible, but you somehow made this very interesting and fun. Anyway, my impression, from my dad who was alive at the time and from old movies etc., was that the real Japanese bogeyman was Tojo, at least for Americans. Japanese history kind of alternates between periods with strong emperors and periods with figurehead emperors where the real power rested with others. The Allies certainly pushed the figurehead idea after the war, and perhaps Hirohito really was one. On the other hand I think it's possible that he wasn't prosecuted because that would risk starting a guerrilla resistance to Allied Occupation.

I moved here in 1990 when the huge debate was the disposition of his body. The Phillippines was the 1898 version of nation building by the U.S., as our hearts were not in pith helmet style colonialism. "Making the world safe for Democracy" became our thing in the Wilson administration and we told Filipinos "We're not here forever" in 1917 and began to prepare our departure in 1931.

    Love these drawing videos! Have you thought about opening an online store?? Also, watching your PM videos motivated me to buy *Fights of Our Lives* and *Dynasties and Interludes* so thank you for referencing them in your videos ~ the art style in *Fights of Our Lives* reminds me of the art style you use in your videos.

      Arthur I would advise searching elsewhere for info on the Soviet Union. JJ (and most western pundits in general) have an extreme bias against it and therefore often are extremely reductionist about Soviet style democracy. Talk to older Russians, it’s not hard at all to find some who lived in the Soviet Union, and many pine for a return to its days. There are also many historical documents to be found about it, if you look outside of the US State Department line. Overall it was a worker’s democracy, which to westerners is a foreign concept that almost always is reduced in their minds as “undemocratic” when in fact the reverse is often true, and even more than liberal democracy in certain cases

    I’m not one for making comments but Western Sahara really is an interesting topic, it highlights a large amount of the issues caused by the colonisers of Africa and their “divide and rule” style politics followed by struggle and Morocco’s not so fair treatment (I’d strongly recommend the book “This Blinding Absence of Light” by Taher Ben Jelloun) I think it’s definitely a current event that deserves a lot more coverage on UA-cam. I’m only mentioning after you brought up Hassan II. (A very accurate depiction I might add loved the video)
