Just a clarification: the position of caliph in Sunni Islam was never a spiritual position, but only political. Caliphs never claimed to themselves a special connection to God or a special authority to interpret scripts. They were just symbols of the unity of the "Umma", or the Muslim believers.

I think I have to kind of disagree on that point. The 4 rightly guided Caliphas were spiritual leaders and they are legitimate according to Sunni Muslims. And while Sunni Islam didn't technically exist back then, Sunnis still consider those 4 leaders to retroactively be spiritual.
I’m thankful of how respectful we was when talking about the religions. Most people nowadays would be making jokes about them when talking about it but J.J stayed professional the entire time and so detailed
J.J has said in the past that he is a Catholic so it makes sense that he would treat religion with respect.
Making jokes doesn't necessarily make you unprofessional or disrespectful though, but I do agree that JJ's attitude in the video was really good, he wasn't overly stern either.

Thank you for this great video. I am a Sunni Muslim. The Caliphe or successor was the political leaders for Muslims. The first 4 caliphas were close companions to the prophet. However, theological questions were answered by the most learned of the Prophet's companions, including the Caliphe. Later day Caliphas did not have a role in the religious guidance of the Islamic community, in most cases. Actually, history has recorded many cases of disputes between a Caliphe and a Muslim religious leaders. This is a very simple explanation for a very complex history. Thank you again for this very concise comparison. May all people be guided to respect and caring for all humanity.

@@lailayas a very good question. As mentioned in the video, there are different sects of Muslims. Each sect may have more than one opinion on a specific matter. As far as depicting prophets and religious leaders in images and sculptures, Sunni Muslims generally don't do that. The reason is to not fall into idolatry. That is giving the drawings per sculptures a sacred nature. Shiite Muslims, generally, hang drawings of Ali and his descendants out of respect and reverence. This is a very short summary.
All Muslims respect and revere the prophet Mohammed as well as all prophets of God. Insulting any one of them is a great insult to us, this includes drawings, writings and any kind of insult.
Insulting Jesus, Moses, Job, Abraham. Isaac or any prophet of God is just as bad as insulting the prophet Mohammed. Muslims are more emotional about the prophet Mohammed because we are daily involved in his teachings.
So, I would say that the cartoons used in this video are not against Islam in an insulting way.

Only most Roman Catholics do. There are other Catholics who don't, such as the English Catholics aka Anglicans, whose head is the Archbishop.

@@DianaSofiaCraft actually they are, they were part of the Roman Catholic Church until they split off in 1534 due to the Pope refusing King Henry VIII an anulment of his marriage. They reunited with the RCC in 1555 and split away again in 1570. They incorporated some Protestant elements but ARE a Catholic church, just not ROMAN Catholic. The term "Catholic" is similar to how the term "Orthodox" ( such as Greek, Russian, Egyptian etc) is used to definite a religious system of beliefs, practices etc. The term "Anglicans" derives from "Anglo" referring to England. Their official name is the ANGLICAN CATHOLIC CHURCH, using 'Anglican' to show their non submission to the ROMAN Catholic Church. The ACC considers itself to be both Catholic AND Protestant. I was àn Anglican, went to a Roman Catholic primary school, was taught all that before I reached my teens by both.
They aren't they are a separate religion within Christianity, there are Anglicans, Mormons, Jehovas Witnesses, Pentecostals, Catholics, etc
@@curtisthomas2670 sorry to break it to you bud. But the moment you reject the pope, you're basically a protestant. You know... because you're protest-ing against him. So it's practically impossible to be Anglican and Catholic at the same time. That's like saying you're a politician that belong to two opposing parties.
But yes, there are other rites within the Catholic church which are not Roman/Latin. But they all accept the legitimacy of the Pope's succession.
Can't talk on behalf of other religion but Islam, but there's something I want to correct. According to Sunni Muslim (can't talk on behalf of Shia because I'm not one of them), the founder of Islam is not Prophet Muhammad PUBH. He was simply the LAST messenger of the deen (way of life) out of the 25 messengers mentioned in the Quran and at least 124,000 (estimated, correct me if I'm wrong) messengers as explained in a hadith.
The Quran simply says that there's a prophet for every nation (tribe, kindom, etc.) including Adam, Noah, Abraham, Jesus, etc. but the exact number is not mentioned, and Muhammad will be the last and final universal prophet of the deen of Islam (the seal of all prophets and messengers).
The revelation that was given to Muhammad that relates to the oneness of God (Tauhid) is consistent with the previous revelations that were given to the other prophets. The revelations that relates to religious practices, dietary laws and conducts, were changed and developed along the way.
The big difference is that Muhammad's revelation is intended for the whole world until the end of time, while previous revelations were only relevant and applicable to each of the previous prophet's time and people.
The Sunni Muslim perspective towards religious and political leaders is that we have to obey them but not so much as to exalt, glorify, praise and worship them (even to prophets, that's why there's no images, idols, etc.) And yes, political and religious leaders are only seen as human. They make errors sometimes and it is inevitable. Again, this is from the perspective of Sunni Muslims.

@Sajeel Hussain ehhh no.. the way of life or "religion" that he/she who submits to the will of God, in Arabic, can be shortened to Islam. Arabic is a beautiful language in ways that is concise and at the same time does not lose its meaning.
So Prophet Muhammad S.A.W never ever did bring a new religion, he just continued what was preached by Adam, Abraham, Moses and Jesus to bring people closer to Allah S.W.T and guide them to the true and proper way on how to worship the Almighty. Prophet Muhammad was not just for a certain tribe like the previous prophets, as mentioned by Ardian Putra in the comment above, but for mankind as a whole.
And the way of life of Adam Abraham Moses and Jesus were that of "submission to the will of God, Allah S.W.T. " WHICH in arabic means Islam. The true Jews and Christian (Ahlul Kitab) of the past according to Islam are those people who submitted to the will of Allah and so, they are in fact, Muslims.
That is why those who newly embraced Islam are called Reverts, not converts. Because it never was a new religion to begin with, but a continuation and purification of the religion from corruption by people throughout time.

The thing with Judaism is that we have Sephardim and Ashkenazis, two distinctly different groups. Originally, we did not have this split, but over time we moved into two regions: Catholic Europe, and the Muslim Middle East and North Africa. The Europeans became Ashkenazis, with their own literature, while the African/Arab Jews became Sephardic, with their own literature. For example, in Halachic literature (Where Jews can find most interpretations of laws, the Original Shulchan Aruch (A comprehensive guide for Jewish law) was originally written for Sephardic Jews, while Rabbi Isserles added on the Ashkenazic version. Even before this split, there was the time of the Geonim in places like Babylon, who headed excellent Jewish institutes, often with a different way of teaching Torah from one another, so you seè, Judaism has often not had a big leader, usually a local Rabbi or authority. Really, the only way to properly “rally” Judaism would be the Messiah coming and rebuilding the third temple. (Interestingly, in some very thorough Halachic works, there are laws for after the building of the third temple)
Not to mention the other Jewish communities, such as the Mizrahi Jews, the Beta Israel (Ethiopian Jews), the Bene Israel (Indian Jews) and the Yemenite Jews, whose cultural and religious practices are distinct from Sephardi/Ashkenazi Jews and from each other.

J.J. McCullough the Archbishop of Canterbury does most of day to day running of the church and decides like what is acceptable Anglican doctrine

Yeah, I feel like Shia Muslims and the sects he mentioned here are all limited to very small geographic regions in West Asia. But if you look at Islam all across the world in areas like Southeast Asia, West Africa, Europe, etc, the vast majority of followers would simply be Sunni.

I loved this video. One note on the Christianity section (for reference, I am Catholic) is that a few of the Apostles traveled in directions outside of the Roman Empire, most notably establishing Ethiopian Orthodox, there is also a section of this that became part of the Catholic Church, called Ethiopian Catholicism (basically, their mass is slightly different from Roman Catholic masses). The other notable established Christianity from the Apostles was a Church in India, though I know considerably less about this Church than the admittedly thin amount I know about Ethiopian Orthodoxy.
I believe those churches were Armenia, Ethiopia (Abyssinia) and Georgia. India didn't have an apostolic presence unless you believe in the apocryphal tale of St Thomas establishing what is today, the Syro-Malabar Church

@@8mycereal outright it's the sixth most followed religion, Christianity is first, Islam second, Hinduism third, Buddhism fourth, Sikhism fifth, Judaism sixth. This isn't including eastern religions such as Taoism, Confucianism, Vietnamese traditional religion, shintoism, tengrinism becuase these are hard to get correct numbers for, but a lot of these religions have more followers than Judaism. So this religion list of the big three abhrahamic religions.

An addition to your section on Christianity. The Anglican and Episcopalian Churches, while Protestant, are much more hierarchical than the Lutheran/Calvinist counterparts. A different history which I believe might make them eligible for another "faction" of Christianity. The Head of the Anglican Church is the Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby, a position inherited from the Catholic days. For the Episcopalians, the presiding bishop is Micheal Bruce Curry. Welby is technically above Curry, but I believe most Americans who worship as Episcopalians would not have known that. So add Archbishop Justin Welby to your list of religious big-wigs.

I don't think so. He implied Jesus died which is technically true but given this is a relatively comprehensive video about religion he should have pointed out thar Christians believe Jesus ascended after resurrection. Given that he is a Jew or at least Jew adjacent this could have been a slight albeit a low key one which is exactly how Jews usually criticize Christians. He is also Canadian and they often behave passive aggressively like that too.

The Islamic part was pretty spot on. The Sunni Shia split occurred because some believed the successor should have been due to blood line, while Sunnis believe that blood line isn't a just reason, and that experience, maturity and spirituality are more important.
Most Muslims are Sunni; which are split into 4 schools of thought or 4 'imams' where practices differ slightly; then you have salafis/wahabis which started in the middle east which wanted to 'purify' Islam from pre-islamic traditions. They're mostly located in Saudi Arabia and the gulf Arab nations, but due to their affluence and money set up mosques and madrassas all over the sunni world.
Shia are mostly concentrated in Iran and neighbouring areas, with pockets throughout the Muslim world. Shia themselves are split into many different sects, which some may consider heretical. While many sunnis dislike Shia, and salafis outright declare them as non muslims, most sunnis are indifferent.
In the Sunni world, since the Ottomans fell, there hasn't been a central spiritual leader. The Saudi government controls the 2 holiest cities, while the Israeli government controls Jerusalem. Each country might have a chief mufti (leader) or mosques led by an imam, or a jamaat (congregation) lead by a sheikh. It's a dream of religious Sunnis for Muslims to be united under one caliph again, but it's impractical due to the different nationalities, languages, interpretation of islam and politics in modern times.

@Deva Rafael yes. As I said, many of the shia sects many Muslims consider outcasts. Ismailis are actually considered to be heritics by sunnis since many of the things they believe in contradicts Islam.
Alawatis, Ismailis, ahmadiyya, druze.. They're all considered to be fringe groups, a bit like Mormons to Christians.

Great video but just to add something to the Christian leaders for anyone interested.
Often everyone lumps all Orthodoxies in under "Eastern" but there's two large distinct branches, the Eastern (Greek, Russian, Most of eastern europe) and the Oriental Orthodoxies, who broke off earlier, and are predominantly in Ethiopia, Eritrea, Egypt (known as Copts), and Armenia. They are similarly decentralized, but they recognize the patriarch of Alexandria (ironically now in Cairo) as their first amongst equals, and he is often called the "Coptic Pope".
Also anglicanism is one of the more hierarchical protestant sects. They recognize the British monarch as their leader, but in practice the Archbishop of Canterbury is closer to what we'd picture as their patriarch
P.S. (edit) I know there's an Assyrian church of the east which broke off even earlier and has a patriarch type guy, but it's a small group and I don't know much about it so if anyone wants to chime in and clarify anything please do. But they're the only other major branch which claims apostolic succession (traces origins to 12 apostles) that I am aware of
I don't know if I would say that Anglicanism-Episcopalianism is THAT hierarchical. From what I understand, it's quite similar to Eastern Orthodox Christianity in that all bishops are equal. And where I live, at least, the Bishops are elected by a local conference rather than appointed by someone higher-up, and theological questions are settled democratically in larger councils. Likewise, no Anglicanism-Episcopalian "autocepholy" or whatever that word was, has power over another, and the Archbishop of Canterbury is merely the "first among equals" in the global "Anglican Communion." I mean, to the extent any denomination has bishops at all I guess it's more hierarchical than the more evangelical denominations.

The Assyrian group are the Nestorians. In the Middle Ages, they stretched all the way to China. There were churches across Central Asia. Unfortunately they faced a lot of persecution under Timur and Muslim rulers in the 14th century and now are just found in Iraq.
@@greatwolf5372 The Nestorians are also still found natively in India, though in very small number (I've read as few as 20,000 but I cannot recall the actual number). Oddly, there they are known as "Chaldeans", though they are not a part of the Catholic Uniate Church originating in Iraq the bares that name. I don't know why they're called that. Maybe Christianity in India is just not confusing enough already... 😁
@@jeremyt.9909 I am part of that community(though not Nestorian). I will try to summarize our history. We are called Nasranis and believe Saint Thomas founded our church. Historically, we were part of the Nestorian Church based in Iraq from about the 4th century to the 16th century. The arrival of Portuguese in the 1500s caused a lot of divisions and splits. Overtime some joined the Catholics, Protestants and other sects. Some joined the Syrian Orthodox Church and I am part of that community. Only a few thousand remain Nestorian.
Funny that the office of Caliph degraded as a spiritual authority over time yet the Papacy, which I would argue was just as much a political force for most of its existence (despite ruling directly over less territory). I wonder if there was a shift in perspective following the Turks' conquest that was later applied to medieval caliphs as well, or if it had to do with the declining prestige of the caliphate after the Abbasids or what
I'm no expert on Islamic theology, or even Muslim history. however my theory for the difference between the two would be that the Papal succession was decided by the Cardinals of the Catholic church, who tended to elect fellow clergy to the role of pope. whereas the title of caliph was largely based on lineage, and ultimately, power. which meant that non-clergy candidates were both possible and likely. i believe this contributed greatly to the decline in the religious significance of the Caliphs, as more and more non-clergy "secular" caliphs came into the position. whereas in the Papacy, the cardinals acted as a filter to ensure that the popes remained primarily clergy. helping to maintain their religious significance (although that significance has waxed and waned itself)

In fact, Sunnis mostly detest the idea of a person being a mediator between them and God, and believe that any connection to God is personal and no human can come between them. Of course, there are radical factions of Sunnis who try to establish a Caliph, but 99% of Sunnis don't recognize them.

The interesting thing is the group of Lubavitchers you described, are a minority within the sect. While, Chabad-Lubavitch (as a whole) is Orthodox/Hasidic, they are not considered Ultra-Orthodox or fundamentalist. The Messianic movement is a very vocal minority. The Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rebbe M.M. Schneerson was actually influential to more than just Jews, in the USA. Every US presidential candidate (and general US politicians) would meet with him, and National Education and Sharing Day is on his birthday.

Fun bit of religious history. The doctrine of the trinity is actually theological, it's philosophical as it was the doctrine taught by Greek philosophers. It was later adoption by some religious as a foundational teaching. However there is no mention of it in the Hebrew or Greek scriptures.

Someone cannot become a prophet until he is sustained by the top 15 leaders in the church (Quorom of The Twelve and First Presidency) with unanimity. A lot of importance is put on the members to do a kind of sustaining: studying and praying to find the prophet to be true and of God as they might scripture.
They must do this before they can enter into callings or perform duties believed sacred, as importance is put on having a strong web of spiritual guidance, which can come from scripture, personal revelation, or advisors, and is validated through one's own personal connection with God.
And the members also sustain him and I believe and if there are any objections it goes into a court esc system but ive never seen it happen before so I don't actually know

Latter-day prophets, anyway. The entire canon of the Bible and the Book of Mormon contain many, many more prophets, and even those two foundational works of scripture aren't the whole story (there are undoubtedly ancient prophets that nobody today knows about!)

I do admire the Catholic Church for its organization efficiency. It's governs 1.1 billion people across the world. No other organization can match that scope.

It's not comparable to a simmularly big population run in one state form like China or India in my opinion.

The Mormons have such an interesting and recent history. You correctly identify them as being very hierarchal but they have an issue with break-away churches and some of those churches are the craziest churches in America. I'd love to see a story about the interplay between the official LDS and the break-aways.
Yeah the FLDS or “fundamentalist” Mormon church as they refer to themselves, still holds the belief that polygamy is ordained of God, which it only was for a short period in the early church to quickly grow the population of the church, and was promptly ended a few decades after it started. The FLDS however, has evolved into a sort of sex-trafficking cult with many of their leaders taking multiple child brides, and their current “prophet” in jail for life charged with multiple sexual assault cases on minors.
Here in Brazil we have a religion called Adventists or Adventistas. They have a lot fo schools here and they are very religious schools. They started with a woman (or a guy but I remember my parents saying it's a woman) who left the LDS church and started one at her own. Although their religion is quite similar to ours, I believe, there are still a lot of things that they do that 100% contradict the Church's beliefs. Also she removed our traditions outside the church such as praying with our arms crossed in public and on our knees when praying alone. Sorry if a few things might be confusing to you since english isn't my native language , BTW idk if Adventistas exist in the US or not. Cheers from Brazil!!

Yeah, the breakaways are the ones that are always embroiled with the polygamy and child marriage scandals (look up Warren Jeffs). They pretty much broke off in 1889, when the church outlawed polygamy.
Another main break away happened in the mid 1840s, after Joseph Smith was martyred, some people believed that the next prophet was going to be one of sons, or a relative of his, contradicting already revealed doctrine. Those that wanted the bloodline movement, broke off after the next prophet was chosen Brigham Young.
I lived in Utah for 19 years. I've been a member of the church throughout my life (32 years).

Two Notices from Me as a shia muslim:
1-The word “sunni” always paired with “prophet mohammed” so “Sunnat Mohammad” means “ traditions of prophet Mohammad”.
2-the cause of divisive between muslims is that shia believes that ali and his sons should be caliphates depends on Prophet Mohammad commandments and orders befer he dies, sunnis on the other hand believe that the caliphate should be chosen by a principle called “shurrat” which mean something like a big discussion between Mohammad followers (Sahhabat), (these principles collapsed after imam ali died and muuhawya (sons of umayya ) take the rule.
What I'm trying to understand id why shias exempt themselves from the pillars of islam. They pray less and consider themselves exempted from zakat but still claim to believe in the quran which clearly states: "Establish prayer and practice charity" and several other verses. Where is this coming from?

They Are not exempt from charity, unlike our sunni brothers, we pay two charity kinds: Khumos and Zakat.

Also all of us sunnis and shias are Muslims and brothers in islam, and there is not huge different between our doctrine.
