i know this is an old video but how much does the underwater camera cost?and is it part of a fishfinder?love the videos, just caught 2 nice 11-13inch rainbow trout here in lillooet BC in pavillion lake ice fishing.
Alexander Kearney Thanks! At the first lake it was pretty mild, air temperature was around 5C so fish were indeed actively feeding. At the second lake, air temperature was hovering around 0C and dipped down to -5C by the end of the day so fish were definitely not moving as much, and harder to tempt when they swim toward the bait.
***** In that first lake the population density is pretty high so they don't grow very big. I was pretty surprised to see that many once I pulled the camera up… ;)
i've watched all of your videos rod and it never dawned on me that there was no ice fishing videos till now. lol awsome i would choose quantity over quality usually to have action all day.
Nice Video! Where were you catching those Brookies. At first I thought it looked like Edna... then at the other angles I wasn't sure about that. Great video though! Ice fishing is fun.
Thanks. I messaged you on youtube and did the contact us on your Web page. Not sure how else to email you. I live in Vancouver area now we should go fishing sometime!
Yeah, it did for a very short while. The ice is now rapidly disappearing. Surprisingly, a week I came back from my trip to Banff, and the highway leading through Merritt and Kamloops had heaps of snow on the road, and the rivers were all frozen up, and when we actually got to Banff, the weather was 16 degrees Celsius, whereas it was -5 degrees last year in March, and all the lakes up there were iced off. We then came back through the Okanagan, which was also relatively warm.
FlashGeiger It also depends on the elevation. The two lakes featured in this video sit at 3,500 to 4,500ft above sea level so they stay relatively cold to get 10in+ of ice.
Rod, you are poorly dressed. when I came to Montreal in the 1990. I started to fishing in the 2nd day of arrival with my friends and also started icefishing for Perch, Pike and other fishes at the end of Montreal in the winter. Sometimes the temperature was -20C. I'm from tropical country and studied and lived in St. Petersburg, Russia and went to see how people icefishing near Hermitage in the Neva River(city centre) and learnt how to icefishing. After moving in BC never went for icefishing, due to distance from Vancouver. I think Icefishing is very enjoyable and how Rod and the girls did there is very enjoyable and funny. My icefishing dress is already decayed in stores I saw, but boots and fishing equipment are still with me. I will sure try here again.
maplewood68 That's way too much finger work… ;) It was really cold and we could barely get the BBQ started already that day because of the wind. What we needed was a tent… next year!
maplewood68 Thanks Andrey, I often bump into viewers on the river or lake from time to time, so definitely say hi if we see each other out there. Enjoy your visit in BC, where will you be fishing?
john Thanks. We have one stream which has brown trout in British Columbia and there are plans to do a feature on it eventually, either later this year or next year.
***** there are also browns further north on Vancouver Island than the stream I think you're talking about. The northerly river also has a good pink run and searun dollies.
It looks like a lot of fun. It is kind of expensive to get started in ice fishing especially if you buy a power ice auger. I am too old to try to drill s hole with an old style hand auger. Then you need special boots and pants and the rod and reel and I bet you are looking at well over $300.
The initial cost is not low for sure, but once those are bought you're set for years of fun! I would say the essentials are a hand auger, Sorel boots, a pair of good snow bib, winter jacket, a scoop for the slush in the hole, ice fishing rod and reel and terminal tackle. Today's hand augers are pretty efficient. I don't consider myself too strong and can do it relatively easily, unless the ice is over 1' thick, which may take quite a bit longer. The secondary, less essential but luxury items are a propane heater, a tent, a chair, a rod holder. I'm probably going to be putting together another video on these items soon.
Hey rod I'm in California, do you think trout are hitting around this time? I'm looking forward into going trout spinner fishing or bait Fishinf on Tuesday. Do you think I have any luck also what's the best spinner to use? Also for rainbow trout
+Nisar Yousouf in california you can generally do good with nightcrawlers, power bait and if you can a Blue Fox Lure, hands down my secret weapon for catching rainbows.
Yes rainbows bite year round you can even ice fish them on lakes that freeze over. So really it doesn't matter. Now with bass they don't. Bite well in the winter they get sluggish from the cold.

Rod, It looks too warm out there! That's when ice fishing is pleasant!
Looks like fun. I didn't think it got cold enough this year in BC for ice.
Yeah, it did for a very short while. The ice is now rapidly disappearing. Pascal Gauthier Thanks!
You mentioned a first lake you were going to go to what was it? If you don't mind sharing.
jimmy mcaley The first lake we were going to go to but didn't go? It was Tunkwa.
*****
That's funny, went there about the end of february, 10'' of ice on the lake.
jimmy mcaley Tunkwa definitely had enough ice but condition wasn't ideal for filming.
*****
Oh yea it can get windy there.
Beautiful!
Thanks!
living the good life with those dogs. wish i was there as well
thanks
Trouta Holic The dogs made a big difference for that day, without them I'm not sure if we could have stayed there the whole day… ;)
