- Опубліковано 9 січ 2023
- The Burbot is slowly growing a niche following across the ice belt. In this video, Jay Siemens and Sean Mcaughey head out on Lake of the Woods to do some ice fishing for these unique creatures, and show off why they are underrated as both sport fish and table fare.

THIS IS THE BURBOT EPISODE IVE NEEDED MY WHOLE LIFE!!!!!! IM ADDICTED TO GOING AFTER DIRTY BURBS!
Take a machete and cut their tail off. They bleed out and the meat is more white coloured.
Well that was a fishing treat! Super underwater footage, could not believe how many fish it took to unsnag Sean!
love the gull creepin around at 9:21, wants some of that ciscoooo
Extinct in the UK, appreciate what you have!
Bring Sean back for another ep! Dude’s as wholesome as they get
Steven R Way Better Hunter

Another great episode Jay! Love learning something new with every video. Been watching you for years! Keep it up!
The excitement you guys put on while catching these fish is so awesome, happy new year and keep it up 👍🎣
Great episode! We called them Mariah here. Delicious fish. Fun to catch in December/January. We cube ours into 1” pieces and put it into boiling salted water for a couple minutes then into a pan with garlic butter. Prairie lobster! Lake Diefenbaker or Last Mountain holds good numbers of these delicious critters.
Amazing episode! this show is a great addition to the meateater series. Please keep them going.
Love seeing another person that loves burbot, I’ve dedicated my past couple ice seasons to figuring them out and I’ve still got lots to learn. Biggest is 32 7/8” though!!!
What does burbot taste like? Caught many, but never ate them.
@@Nanooky taste like chicken to me, neutral flavor, if you boil them in sprite or 7 up and dip in butter theyre alot like crab without the frustration of the shell.
@@motoboggin2619boiling in sprite sounds disgusting how can that taste like crab
more for me@@Elias-xu7uw
As always, great video Jay. Always enjoy your content.
Awesome video yet again, so cool to see how those burbot act during / after the spawn.
My favourite show on the channel! Always excited for a new episode.
Awesome! Thanks for sharing! I know of some Big walleye spots on LOTW.
Burbot are my favourite fish to catch through the ice
This is a welcome reprieve in eastern ontario - checked 4 lakes today - and the 2023 season is looking grim in my neck of the woods, lots of really sketchy ice.
Been loving this series featuring Jay!!
Steve, you need to check out the burbot derby up Flin Flon/bakers narrows in Northern manitoba. Also the the lake trout derby as well. You are missing out on the massive moose up there too.
I caught a 11lber in Candle lake in 2008 December time. First time ice fishing in Canada.
Great video, love the seagull in the background!
Awesome footage. Jay is the man
Great footage. Really liked this video.
God Bless you Guys.
Ahhh man, great video guys. I love it. Glad you got that Big Nasty Spoon back Sean! Now, more burbot content please....go find a 15 pounda!
Excellent video. You guys are the best camera salesmen of 2023. To be able to see how the fish respond to bait and techniques was amazing.
superb. best of this series. low key
That underwater footage was INSANE!!! Great video!!

You are randomly selected among winners of today.👍🎉 Happy new year congratulation you just won a prize, kindly message me on telegram.🎊💐🎊
caught one of these years ago, had no idea what it was, freaked me out. My father went on to tell me how when ice fishing for trout back in the 60s, if they caught one of these, it was left on the ice to die. ...... others would ski-doo around the lake looking for discarded "Ling"
that was super cool underwater footage thanks for teaching fileting as well
Happy new year .🌲That's awesome super glad you are enjoying the content❤️🎉🎉. I appreciate your support and commenting!! You won the prize.
On the hunt for my first dirty burn this season! Great content.
8:24 cracks me up!
Great episode Sean and jay, Will have to try for them on lake Simcoe using your tips, Someone gave me one last year on the ice and i brought it hone and ate it, Fine eating fish,
That is soo cool. I would love to catch some of those.
I love cusk their my favorite fish to catch nd eat. We call them cusk in maine nd used to get them over 12lbs years ago nd some alot bigger you'd have to drill or chisel the hole bigger to get them out haha my dad got one 44inches long nd had to drill 2 holes to the first hole for its head nd huge belly to get thru. This was back before digital or accurate scales tho so no idea on that ones weight
Burbot, a member of the cod family, are a very tasty fish!
I’ve gone out a few times targeting burbots in west hawk lake. No luck yet…. Maybe next time?
Great vid as always Jay.
Very cool footage!

I caught plenty of Ling in the ocean had never even heard of fresh water lings until yesterday I'm 🇦🇺 then this uploads. What a coincidence
Was hoping to target burbot this year and the little bit of insight helps just need a lake closer
My first fish I caught ice fishing was a burbot. Caught 6-8 all very small.
Love catching them!!

Congratulations🎉🎉🎊🎊

Crazy how aggressive Burbot are. I have had them come off the bottom fishing in 20ft of water to attack my transducer. They sometimes swim around the hole just a couple feet down from the ice.
Very cool!
Another great video. They remind me of catfish the way that their bodies are. Great video, mahalo for sharing.
That underwater footage...WOW! So damn cool!
Bucket list fish for me. I live in Oregon, keeping meaning to take a trip up to Washington to try and get one. I don't think we have any here to speak of, though I know some live in the Columbia. Good luck targeting them.
That underwater footage is awesome 👌
Just hammering the burbs.
Jay you should hit Simcoe with taro for burbot
Great eating fish!!!. I miss going after them. Dead shiner on bottom with float
Got the head of a mongolian taimen, the back end of an eeln and the meat of a shrimp. Wonderful fish burbot are.
I love Ling cod in a beer batter and malt vinegar.
09:24 that bird is sneaking in for their next days meal lol
NICE !
As a SE Missourian never heard of them. Look like a snake head or bowfin as someone said..that being said looked fun and I def try one 👍
Jay is the goat!!
Awesome 👏

Called Cusk in Maine. Good eats!
What’s a beautifully coloured pike!
Out here in Maine they are best known as cusk.
We call them Cusk in New Hampshire/Maine. Fresh water cod
We used to have these in the Uk, presumably leftover from the ice age. They seem to have gone extinct about 100 or so years ago ☹️
That's a pretty cool Northland hat
i think i recognize the one spot lol caught some nice burbs and walleye there last year.
What a beautiful pike
Near lake Champlain NY we call them bowfin .... aka ling
The camera makes it Fun!
JO JO IN VT 💞💨❄️☃️
Crushing it
Now I have to go lung fishing, and get an underwater camera! Keep up the great work Jay!

Fun video! Y'all hear about that guy a couple weeks ago breaking the Indiana burbot record twice in one day? With stuff like that happening, these guys must be underappreciated
Just got broken again! The record stood for 32 years and has now been broken 3 times by 2 anglers in just a few months. Wild stuff
I can't wait to see what this is about, this time around down on the ice there, eh?

People leave burbot on the snow for birds? That should be a crime!!! Best tasting freshwater fish in north America
Poor man's lobster 👌
My first burbot I caught was 15 pounds
They taste so good fresh water cod
I went to school with Jay!
Great video! What kind of sun glasses are you wearing?

I find it way easier to skin them and then take the filets. You can separate the 2 filets a side with the rib cage. No bones end up in thr meat.
We call them cusk here Maine!
Also the belly meat on good sized one is a great piece of boneless meat, pull the skin off the whole fish before cutting and all the skin comes off east in one piece, then after the back straps and tail fillets cut just above the vent and along the sides to the bottom of the ribs and all the way around. My favorite fresh water fish in Maine and I eat them all!
Called fresh water ling cod in Alaska.
We call em cusk in Maine.
