About that last show; Dio was already suffering from stomach cancer at the time. It wasn't diagnosed yet, but Tony Iommi later said that Ronnie was worried about his health and was in pain but wanted to finish the tour before seeking medical attention.

Dio is truly a legend that ought to be written down in music history books. You did him great justice Zach.
Please be part of the research into his methods and techniques, as well as his habits. You seem to be the only one genuinely interested in him right now from an academic standpoint(disregarding that CVT and Estill stuff).

Zach Ansley One HUGE mistake you made in your first video is not taking a couple minutes to familiarize yourself with the career of Ronnie James Dio. Dio passed away at the age of 68 yrs old from pancreatic cancer. He was in the middle of a huge tour when he was suffering from severe abdominal pain. He completed his tour was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer then started treatment vowing to kick cancer and return to the stage. Ronnie began fronting his first band in his teen years. That was your MAJOR ERROR in both of your videos when speaking about Ronnie's career. Ronnie James Dio had a successful singing career for the span of OVER 50 years! I was only able to watch a third of your original critiquing of Ronnie. I was happy to see you hopefully decided to give one of the greatest rock vocalist of all time the respect he deserves. Unfortunately I am not going to put myself through another critiquing of Ronnie. For a man his vocal control, range and everything else is amazing. He is Rock God and will always be one of the greats.

I'm circling back on this, as watched originally a while back, and was revisiting Dio work for another discussion and saw this in the sidebar.
      Some notes. Some touched on, some not;
You have to (all do) remember when addressing this and similar, when your starting point is Ronnie James Dio and Bruce Dickenson, who I readily place side by side having seen both of them close enough to shake their hands over the past maybe 40 years?, you are STARTING with the highest level of professionals.
Some mention Dio's Cancer. I actually saw one of his last shows (It's been a while now, I would have to look up specific shows and dates), and he delivered almost exactly as he did for the past several decades, and then? He was gone. I remember being so confused for literally weeks as to how a person could be up, running around, delivering such POWER (vocals, performance) and then gone from a long standing pre existing condition. As I recall which seems to differ from below, he had already "recovered" and was anticipating more in life, which made it even more confusing to me.
As mentioned, and the same for Bruce, the tours and number of shows that both of them did (and still do) are an aspect worthy of note and consideration. Bruce also recently dealing with Cancer (mouth, throat?, I'd have to go check). I did notice a lapse for Bruce in their set lists for a little while there, not doing some of the more challenging pieces.
When people visit a single moment in time to critique one's performance and skill set, often, it doesn't really do it justice. In Dio's case, one could revisit "Heaven and Hell" (the song) either studio (1981?), or later live versions closer to his passing, yet never have witnessed or even be aware of things like this (link attached, and specific point in video que'd)
      ua-cam.com/video/vpgu9wKJVbc/v-deo.html
He was already 35 years old at the time and had been performing for almost 20 years at the time of that video, which it's remarkable such high quality was captured on video.
The same would apply to Bruce who I first saw (and met) in 1982-83. I think I saw them 5-6 times in that period, and a work to review is that tour was captured on video as well and available to this day. (here, youtube, including "Hallowed Be Thy Name" which I think you viewed a much later version)
I remember times seeing Bruce where you could actually hear HIM up to several rows out, and just as the above Dio link is one that comes to mind when thinking of him, so is a later version of Bruce at Canterbury, (video que'd), where one can see (hear) him fill the space BEFORE he reaches the mic. (video que'd) I remember experiencing the same in the early 80's seeing him very close in larger venues and hearing HIS VOICE. His actual voice.
      ua-cam.com/video/jLhf8caVIiI/v-deo.html
Revisiting the above, these gentleman are almost unmatched in those areas (rock and metal). While interesting "starting points", one has to realize WHERE they just "started" in analysis lol. 40+ yr. endless touring professionals who changed music HISTORY.
Many might attempt to add 1-2+ to that list....but I'm not sure any proposed additions would be worthy in the end. Bruce also being a documented Polymath as well, which has included flying (captain) their commercial aircraft while on tour, on top of athletics, author, entrepreneur, and so on.
Last but not least, one absolutely remarkable thing was Dio's size relative to his voice. I'd have to look up his height, but the times I saw him perform and met him, it seemed like he was 5' WITH the platform shoes lol.......but you truly felt as though in the presence of a literal 7 foot tall "giant".
I'm thankful I have had a life with such opportunities (perpetual 1st row seating, meeting show performers before and after, and all sorts of interesting little experiences performance and venue related....) Kind of provided me with a different perspective of artists and their performances and skill sets. Up close being a completely different audio experience as well.....(such as hearing vocals from the singers mouth as opposed to the PA, etc, etc)

Thanks Zach... Kudos on a job well done. The only thing I would have liked to see you touch in was the nearly 20 years of recorded work he did prior to forming Rainbow with Blackmore.
I believe those two decades of playing and singing in many many different genres of music played an equally important roll in his style and approach as did the trumpet playing and his appreciation for classical music and opera.
Another amazing fact about Ronnie and one that probably makes his story even more incredible is the fact that he never wanted to sing and didn’t at all until he was 17 years old! His first recorded work was in 1958 as a member of Ronnie and the Red Caps with a song called Lover sung by the bands lead singer Billy DeWolfe and the B side was instrumental called Conquest which was Ronnie on the trumpet.
DeWolfe left the band shortly after that and after trying out everyone else in the band first Ronnie gave it a shot and they liked his voice the best.
One of the greatest voices ever didn’t even want to sing.... if that’s not the definition of god given talent I don’t know what is.

I appreciate the depth of analysis and the time you put into making this, after your previous 'Dio reaction' video, it's great to see you revisit Dio and form a new appreciation. I have spent countless hours studying Dio's technique and tone, comparing him vs many singers in many styles. What sets him apart, for me, is his tonal consistency (as you say) combined with his unique 'snarling' rasp and power. Other metal singers sang higher notes, but it is the ease at which Dio navigates the passaggio with such power that is the super-human aspect. I'm on ok singer, and I like to dabble in this style especially. I know just how damn hard it is to sing songs like Rainbow in the Dark (or pretty much any Dio song) - His power zone was right in the spot where most people either cannot reach, or cannot reach without sounding ridiculously strained and out of their depth. In this mid-high range he excels and stands above all others, with a tone that pierces and snarls, with a good amount of ping and resonance. You will notice that as his career progressed, his voice began to age and take on an 'unsettling' quality that I enjoy personally. He lost some top end range, but gained in a kind of power and resonance elsewhere. His final album with 'Heaven and Hell' features (IMHO) some of his best vocals, both in terms of tone and power. You can hear the age in the voice, the vibrato has slowed and become more of a slow 'power pulse'. You can hear death approaching, but also the physical effort he puts in that overcomes the fatigue and the power that it adds. He never lost that internal energy that he was able to project into his voice that we perceive as raw power.
    ua-cam.com/video/1HfDfYMACcc/v-deo.html
He stands as a testament to what can be done with the voice in the heavy metal style. Other metal singers (James Hetfield I'm looking at you) end up copping out, and switching to some kind of less 'demanding' technique in order to prolong their careers after some years of abuse. Not everyone can follow Dio, obviously, but his fundamental singing technique as you say was spot on. I don't really love the 'power metal' style he helped spawn, though they hit more impressive notes at times. The power, tone and sinister quality to his voice is something that stands alone almost as its own genre within metal - and one of the only sub genres I enjoy these days. He pioneered what it meant to be a metal 'power singer' for lack of a better word, and as such was free from the shackles of imitation and comparison to who had come before. A unique voice of rare talent and artistic integrity, beloved by all who's lives he touched. It is a great gift to have had him, but a great shame that the torch has not been passed. He was the last in line
p.s. I have a massive soft sport for Eric Adams as well, for similar reasons, he is no. 2 for me in 'heavy metal'. He lacks the same natural ability, but he tries so damn hard to push himself to do things he shouldn't naturally do vocally. There is something incredibly sincere about his delivery, bearing in mind the nature of the lyrics. Any other vocalist, and it would be a complete and utter joke of a band. Because of Eric Adams, I can buy it 100%... Most of the time.

As a singer regularly singing Dio, I'm glad you explain everything in more detail than before.
I always think that fundamentals are the most important part of their success. Roy Khan was playing clarinet and the god was playing trompet. This is no coincidence. Besides musicality, almost everything is good basics for the musicianship. If you skip any part, stop what you're doing and go back to the basics. For example breath support. You'll see everything will build up faster than before 🤘

Among other things, one has to understand that most of the pieces Dio sang are around tenor A to tenor D (ie. A4-D5). And moreover, the songs were not written so that the high pitch would be a vovel. For example Rainbow in the Dark. All the "ing's´" etc. are A4-C5. And still all singing is free of pressure, totally effortless - although rasp added on. It's kind of funny that many "true professionals" that you can find over internet are saying that Dio was a baritone. He wasn't. But his sound - like explained by Zach - was dark, even in the highest pitch. Dio is something in-line with Caruso and few others.

I don't think , even in Fach , Dio was a tenor yet when he reached late 50's and early 60's .
      His basic Tone changed .
In 2005 london live , you can heard that some tracks , Holy diver tracks
Are Half step lower tuned .
Even he could hit raspier , extreme Highs ( Gypsy Intro , as Mob rules in 2007 and 2009 , where he hits notes as A5 , C6 depending lives ... at 65 or 67 years old !).
When he talks , his voice is much more thicker and Deep .
Resonance that is Not longer The low tenor he was In 50's , 60's , 70's, 80's .
I think as his vocals became much more harshiers with Deshumanizer or Angry machine etc...
In 90's i think the progressive change began

If you listen Dio in "Southern Cross" and in "Metal will never Die" there is a big difference, but not because he would had changed his tonality but because of his decision.

I think having a change of heart is understandable but what's really commendable is that you are honest enough to say "I just don't know how he did that" Makes me think there's hope for more people in the future to say "Perhaps we ought to know this things" and further study because it is very clear that a great deal of metal singers actually can pull this off.
It makes me think that scream singing is the kind of thing where it's very easy to exponentially exacerbate inconsistencies and damaging problem in the technique through excessive touring which is sadly a very common issue today for bands trying to make a living.

Well, when it comes to "Greatest", I think that the term can be viewed subjectively. If I look as the overall picture of "Who was Dio the man and how he shaped metal", then to me yes, he was the greatest. More than his frontman career and singing abilities, Dio was a symbol. Like a father figure to everything in metal. His personal support to so many musicians, the general public and his truly angelic heart, all of those made him a legend in his own lifetime (Although he never thought of himself as such. He was too humble). But yeah, his energy was insane, even to his last days.

almost all the terms you'll hear him say are Italian in origin, passagio (italian)-passage(english)-pasaje(spanish) the passage to and from the headvoice. Vibrato is the same in Italian as it is in Spanish. Legato would be best translated into spanish as encuadernar. when you sing legato it is to bind the words together.

    • @tn-luna6915
      @tn-luna6915 5 років тому +2

@@Nthr4xx Yeah, thank's for the clarification. I guess this terms have been taken from opera. Fortunately, spanish and italian both come from the latin tongue and share a lot of their grammar, so the meaning of those words is not totally lost. For instance, phonetically "legato" is really similar to "ligado" (which means "tied"); all these words (even "encudernar") have this sense of "things that are glued... things that are not loosened or disconnected". Anyway, what I really like of Zach's channel is that he explains this terms in the best of ways, so I can easily understand what he's saying or arguing.

Great analysis, I've always thought he was the best metal singer of all time. Did you get to hear any of his work as a "crooner"? Look up Ronnie and the Red Caps or Ronnie and the Prophets, he was amazing! I believe he made his first recording in the late 50's, so all considered, he had a career that spanned nearly 6 Decades! Here is a very old film of Dio playing bass/singing (though no sound!) and..... smoking! ua-cam.com/video/jIoedW1fd2w/v-deo.html

If you're talking about his showmanship and consistency, you missed mentioning he was a doo-wop and jazz singer since back in the 50s and 60s, it's obvious that all his experience from back then in studio and stage plus his professional training and discipline made him into what he was as a seminal metal singer in the 70's up to his passing...
You should also look into his earliest recordings like "Love Potion Number 9", "Will You Still love Me Tomorrow?", "An Angel is Missing", "Love Pains", "Walking Alone", "What I'd Say", "Blue Days, Blue Nights", "I Told You So", "Mr. Misery" and into his covers of The Beatles in 1965 and later Black Sabbath in 1969-1972. You can see his stylistical evolution.
Also you should look for the playlist "Ronnie Dio and The Prophets: The Early Years", which containst tracks from 'Ronnie and The Rumblers', 'The Red Caps', 'Dio and The Red Caps', 'Dio and The Prophets', later renamed 'The Prophets' and 'Vegas Kings', which contains the tracks I mentioned, although many of his early tracks are missing from it like 1958's "Conquest" or Elf's "Everybody's Gotta Dance"...

As a heavy metal frontman you have to be as much an entertainer as musician. I don’t go to a live performance primarily for the music because very few performs as well live as in the studio, singers forget the lyrics, guitarists shred strings, and so on. If I want to just listen, I choose a studio recording 9 times out of 10.
