    The PiStorm is an amazing bit of work and love the one in my A500. I do think we have to accept that it working as well as it does is incredible when precise timing is needed but it seems to me that the it is important to take on board that the chip memory thing may not be fixed. Still a wonderful thing even with the slow down.

    I have got two A1200,one has a TF1260 fullfat running at 50Mzh it might be a rev 5 or 6 the other has PiStorm32 with a Raspberry 3A+. I ran SysInfo 4.4. The TF 1260 chipram was 2X faster than the PiStorm32.

      Yup. PiStorm still falls on its face for Chipram speeds.

    Found out why MainView was not working right in your video. It happens in NTSC. In PAL it's okay. I also realized that anim playback works better in NTSC than in PAL. The pixel count ist about 20% less so the framerate ist about 20% higher.

    I never used ClariSSA, but from what I remember using the Amiga magazine for all the years, ClariSSA was about converting animations to the then new SSA format, which actually stood for 'super smooth animation', meaning it was optimized for higher frame rates. As I said I did not use the tool, but I can imagine it might simply have converted the anim file to SSA in memory directly while loading the anim. In this case it would not qualify as an valid anim player 'benchmark'.

      Interesting. Yeah I learned a lot about those tools. Mainactor seemed to be a solid one.

      @@leejohnson2955 Yeah, good shout, I've been making massive ANIM5s with Wildfire. Biggest one so far 9500 frames, 350mbs. Been messing around making anims with synced sound, using SCALA to actually play back anims, as you can set the fps, play 8SVX samples (and change the pitch), and stream the ANIM from hard disk (rather than load it all into ram), I can get my Amiga playing the 350mb ANIM, even though it's only got 18mbs of ram, because of the streaming.

    Could it be that main actor doesn't support ham mode? Ham doesn't use palletes iirc, it just sets a starting color and then the color difference for the next pixel to the right of the last one. So hold and modify, hold the color then modify for the next pixel etc.
    Could be that the pi emulation memory isn't as efficient to transfer data from fast ram to chip ram. Display chip can only access chip memory.

    • @HoldandModify

      All good points to consider. Especially the HAM support. Hmm.

    • @gerrymangione
      @gerrymangione Рік тому +1

      I did not have this issue with "Mainactor Broadcast". The sharware version uses probably a older version of the codec or does not support HAM modes at all. Anyways the playback improves greatly if you convert the files from amim5 to anim7-32.

      @@HoldandModify okay… so long story short I have the same issue.
      I have an A1200 w/ PiStorm32 and a Raspberry Pi Raspberry Pi 3 Model B running CaffeineOS version 919.
      When I copied the files over from CF card via the A1200’s PCMCIA I copied it over to a partition on the SD Card.
      What software ran the file? Hell if I know.
      I clicked on it and it just played via the “HAM6.anim” file via the A1200’s AGA.
      It had zero load time. Clicked and played… I noticed in your videos, Kevin, that it took a while for the file to, what you said was, copy/load into memory…
      I dunno if that is what happened to me… as I had zero load time… it makes me think that when I played the file in my Amiga 1200 with CaffeineOS it is playing from the SD card? I really don’t know.
      I will say I had the same results as you did. The HAM6.anim was slow and the HAM8.anim was a slide show.

    I prefer the 68060 intel, nec, toshiba, and there are other cpu brands, nxp, are the new comer cpu, why compromise with a aue, pi emulator with AmigaOS. remember, Only Amiga Makes It Possible ,,, truly

    • @another3997
      @another3997 11 місяців тому +1

      I'm not sure I understand what you mean. Intel isn't a newcomer, they made the very first commercial microprocessor. Why use a PiStorm? Because the 68060 hasn't been produced for many years. They are relatively rare and very expensive, especially the later revisions. Why compromise with UAE on a Pi or emulation in general? Because you can buy a brand new Pi or PC for not a lot of money. You can't buy a brand new Amiga, and 2nd hand ones cost a fortune. And emulators will provide better compatibility than any single real Amiga.

    I think nowadays the best way to run Amiga is with PIMIGA 2.0, JUST a Raspberry PI 4/5 and one does not even need the original Amiga Hardware. That would be just in the way nowadays.

    • @HoldandModify

      If you have a Windows based PC, you'll get even better results using WinUAE. The Raspberry Pi range is great for many things, but in raw performance terms, they're not up their with modern x86 CPUs. Plus, proper GPU hardware acceleration on the Pi has always been a sticking point.
