@@keefriff99 Its not needless if the content is crap for which the sequel trilogy is. So therefore it is NOT Star Wars canon. The fans have decided that. And what is the old saying after films release.."it now belongs to the audience"
@Dr.LongMonkey no. I've lived through both the prequel and sequel eras. Lucas never started name calling anyone in the fanbase for not liking the prequels. Kennedy and Disney's friends in the media used current political events as a means to attack anyone that didn't like their movie about space wizards. Other studios followed bc she made a billion 3 times. What you're seeing now is the results of that very short sighted plan. If you adjust for inflation, they have lost 1/2 of ticket buyers. This indiana jones movie is about to lose 75% of Krystal Skull's actual viewers.
I’m seeing so many people come up with so many damn excuses for Disney flops but then when it’s other studios, no one has any problem calling it a flop. Sometimes people even egg the haters on. Dial of Destiny is performing on the level of The Flash yet this one is “not that bad”???? What?!
Kathleen Kennedy is the walking definition of it's who you know not what you know 😐🤨 For someone to be so hateful to a fan base that she leaves Star Wars in a bad situation and to let the budget for Indy 5 go over $320 mill and still keep her job.....mind blowing. I recall she made Rogue One to cost double because she ordered reshoots. In the original Jyn Erso survived. By Killing Jyn Erso, they made the first Disney princess to die in a nuclear strike. And they sold Jyn Erso dolls. Probably someone thought that the dream of little girls in life was to play dying due to nuclear strike instead of playing being an astronaut or a cowboy. Double cost does not sound like the financially saavy person. And definitely not the creative lore expert either.
I just feel like the market is so saturated so people are really picking what they want to see and are being patient with other films to him digital or streaming
Yes, Back in 2019 the top, 9 movies at the worldwide box office all earned over 1 billion dollars each. Since 2019 only 5 movies have made over 1 billion dollars. I think The Super Mario Brothers Movie is unassailable as the box office champion this year.
The movie wasn't bad. But there was a dark sadness to it. And an element of Indy abuse that was hard to watch. Unless it's massively popular, people skip the theaters most times. People just can't afford the theater experience and with the glut of entertainment one can find...skipping a film is not hard for most these days.
Abuse of the star of the show = a movie movie that fans (~70% of would-be goers) don’t wanna spend time and cash to see. And they KNEW it was gonna be like that.

Never have I thought in a million years that Indiana Jones 5 could potentially beat John Carter as the biggest box office bomb of all time, but here we are.
It’s time for a big Lucasfilm shakeup at Disney. I’m not a Kennedy hater (she’s had a few hits), but if you make this many mistakes you deserve to lose your job.
To be honest I'm completely done with Lucasfilm. I thought about going to see Indy, a character who I adore but I remember what Lucasfilm has done and said and have decided to wait and watch it for free. I will be supporting Mission impossible and really enjoyed across the spiderverse.
Indiana Jones’s situation is actually very close to No Time To Die which also had very similar opening, budget and audience. But the problem is, NTTD was extremely huge overseas despite pandemic, grossed $613M just internationally. Also critics and audience scores were higher. So considering three big movies are coming and Indy hasn’t just attracted audiences at all, it’s big failure for Disney.
Transformers literally had a good drop this weekend just like elemental, Spider-Man, and little mermaid. They were the only movies with good drops. Also not bad considering it’s an upward trend atleast domestically from the last 2 transformers movies
I think and I'm feeling that 2023 has SO MANY good movies that I can't go to all of them. I have a feeling Studios held movies and a throwing them all into 2023 hurting each other. Some of these movies underperforming are VERY good movies. I just can't afford to go see them all. And as a HUGE Superhero fan, I myself am feeling fatigue both on DC and Marvel.
I've seen 29 different movies so far this year, and only a few were great. I saw _Air_ and _Across the Spider-Verse_ twice. _The Little Mermaid_ put me in a good mood, inspiring me to listen to Disney songs for a week. _Avatar_ and _Mario_ were spectacles though I missed the latter. Others were good, but I'm not ready to see them again, though they may have had good, memorable scenes I'd like to watch again, or something worth quoting.
Going to be the first movie I have watched in theaters in years. Caviezel actually wants us to watch it, and hasn't done the typical Hollywood thing of telling the fans that they are irredeemable scum. It's refreshing.
As for Elemental, once upon a time people would see a Pixar film simply because it was a Pixar film, quality was a given. these last few years, not so much
Maybe if Disney didn't put Pixar films like Soul, Luca, and Turning Red on Disney+ for streaming instead of waiting for covid portacals to relax like Tom Gun Maverick, people might look at those films as 🎥 instead of streaming.
Kennedy could not just run the company and let the creators create, her insistence is insert herself in the "creative" process and insert herself in Lucas films content sunk all it's franchises. So sad 60 million should had been the Budget for indi, not the first week not numbers
Grace nailing the commentary at Disney at the moment. 300m budget is hefty. This could have been a Top Gun Maverick if it was focused enough. A real shame.
I don’t think so. Tom Cruise is a lot more relevant than Harrison Ford. Even if Tom is only Mission Impossible at this point he has at least been in the box office for decades.
Honestly I cringe when I hear KK has billion doll successes, I mean star wars was a license to print money at the time. Anyone could've been the head of Lucas film at the time and it would've done well. She's successfully ran Lucas film into the ground
"if she can't get this right, she can't get anything right" Did ....... Have we not all seen the star wars sequels? Have we not all been aware of her approach to film making since *at least* Rogue One?
Once upon a time George Lucas consulted with a scholar Joseph Campbell, who had written in 1949 a book The Hero with a Thousand Faces, and George Lucas faithfully implemented many of the ideas of this book in his Star Wars movies. George Lucas even had Bill Moyers film five interviews for Joseph Campbell and the Power of Myth at Lucas Ranch, to communicate to the general public Campbell's ideas as Campbell neared the end of his life. But for whatever reason, George Lucas did not implement any of what Campbell said at the end of the book, the very point of the book: The hero's real purpose is to resolve some apparently intractable duality and go back to the hero's people to communicate this resolution, for the community to either accept or reject. No one, not George Lucas, not anyone, has any plan to resolve Star Wars intractable duality between the different powers of the Force, for that would I suppose mean the end of the franchise.
What is going on at the box office? It feels like flop after flop. Is the global box office down in general or is the market just over saturated? Why are studios putting their movies in a bloodbath while we’re in the writers strike? There’s gonna be a huge lul in film releases soon! Just wait! People will be begging for material that isn’t written by AI or a scab intern very soon! Is it just streaming taking over? Are we heading to a recession and people have less disposable income? All of the above? Idk.
Grace has railed against NYC theaters not providing a better experience of comfort, crowd control, and cleanliness. If they can't get new repeat business, then I think their alternative is to raise prices on their regulars and hope they don't go elsewhere.
Iger needs to put a hold on all Star Wars until Kathleen Kennedy leaves so nothing else gets ruined and the new head can decide what to do with the shows and movies
I have been a fan of Kennedy's since the 80's, and have defended her up until a few years ago. But with this film (which, I admit, I enjoyed, with some caveats), I now am having SERIOUS doubts about her. This franchise, which is one of her first big successes, should be a no-brainer slamdunk success at this point.
Even if it doesn't make money, it could still be good or make you feel good when you see it. I felt good seeing Michael Keaton as Batman again, though the ending of _The Flash_ was depressing.
I no longer believe Rotten Tomatoes scores. It says 88%, but when I read the "positive" reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, they all feel so... deeply depressing. Like here's one: "...a passable capper to a series that probably should've been retired after the nigh flawless Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade." That's a "positive" review, and I just picked it at random. Most of the "positive" reviews, are like that.
In South Korea, Elemental got to No 1!! The box office is 3 times that of Spidervers. Maybe the Korean sentiment got us 😂😂😂 I loved both movies especially the dobly experience❤
DC needs to do a full 100% reboot . They’re in such a bad place right now. I think this soft reboot is a massive risk even if I think the content itself looks good. I feel like when people like us who actually keep up-to-date with this kind of stuff are confused about what’s going on in DC you know it’s gonna be bad for the general audience. They need to scrap everyone and do a 100% reboot. If they want to keep some of the same actors, at least make them different characters. You can keep Jason, but make him lobo. If you keep Margot make her a different character. I don’t know. I just think that this is a huge risk for DC when I feel like they can’t afford risks right now.
Plus make it clear to even the most casual ticket buyer that it is a 100% reboot. Seems like there was too much is it or isn't a reboot on Transformers and that likely impacted the box office run.
As Grace has said, Sunday's box office is very predictable based on Friday's plus Saturday's. I thought things might be different with the heat advisory warnings and the Tuesday holiday, but apparently it was like a typical Sunday. However, I think one Sunday recently, she said they had to adjust their numbers that day.
i think some random guy they picked off the street would do a better job than she has for at least the last decade. How you can mess up Indiana Jones is beyond me.
- its not a flop or box office bomb, but its afar cry from successful. Its only made $526m on a $250m production budget, not including marketing or advertising. It will end right at $600m. Id say it’s only “marginally” successful & just barely at that.
Social media... as in twitter, maybe? You have to understand there's a group of people who live in this bubble where everything they champion (usually social and political activists, and the like) has to be validated. They twist the facts to make themselves feel better. I wouldn't pay them too much mind.
Wow, the comments pretty much gave you the deep dive. I would just say that Cruella came out in 2021 at the same time of the year and grossed $233 million worldwide. Disney is going to do a sequel. Little Mermaid has made $283 million in the US alone. Cruella had a budget of 200 million and Mermaid had a budget of 250 million. So, it's doing well. It didn't have a huge drop so people are still watching it in theaters. It's probably going to make close to $600 million like the other commenter said. If it does, it will be the 5th highest grossing movie of 2023 and it would have made its money back. This doesn't include PPV, iTunes, and streaming sales.

If the summer blockbuster season has fizzled so far, could it be a sign of broader economic malaise, rather then anything to do with Hollywood or politics?
It's telling you mentioned both Hollywood and 'politics' but failed to include streaming which has been a catastrophe for theaters, especially since Covid.
@@Renoistic Perhaps even more telling since my other comment on this video is a prayer for Flash to be on Max next week. Although your point is well taken as I am certainly never going to see a movie in a theatre again and am quite content to wait for streaming, maybe I am not all that unique. However, Mario and Guardians of the Galaxy would serve as strong counter points.
Bad movies do bad. When "politics" dont clog stuff up movies do great. Superhero fatigue? Spiderverse is great. Animated movies are doing bad? Here comes Mario.
Hey Grace! Question: i know that advertising isn't included in a movie's budget. But how much can you guess is in an advertising budget about 100 million, is it better to guess that advertising budget would be like a percent of the totally budget, like adding 30% to the movie budget would be a good guess to see how much a movie needs to make to break even
For a regular film, x2 of the budget. A blockbuster or awards fare films usually are anywhere between x2.5 to x3 of the budget. Consider this a good general rule of thumb.
I thought the picture was excellent a little over long… cut the Tuk Tuk sequence, everything else worked really well for me I loved the Helena character and Toby Jones is a scene stealer as always, as for Indy I just thought it was great to see him again as an old boy struggling along I came out completely satisfied and look forward to watching the film again at the Cinema, it’s not a mass crowd pleaser but I think certain people will connect with it like myself I think over time it will become more appreciated.
Absolutely, best possible ending this franchise and character could possibly have had. Helena is as worthy a successor as possible to carry on the adventures. He reunited with Marion again, just like the fourth movie, as Lucas would say it's like poetry. But sexists are gonna hate just because a woman is the narrative driving force here and Indy is just struggling along as you said.
Disney properties need to reign in their budget for their movies if they are going to continue this business plan of a perceived “short” window till it debuts on Disney +. With the current economic climate, why pay to go to the cinema if you already have a Disney+ subscription and you can wait? People’s viewing habits have changed due to turning to streaming during the pandemic. I think you may be right Grace. The cinema is over saturated and the big event cinema events are few and far between

You kinda edited what he said. He said she was good at interrupting people with ideas. She wasn't a good secretary, but she was good with ideas which is why she was made a producer.
The worst thing kennedy did was lean into dividing the fanbase. She and her subordinates are openly antagonistic towards half of their potential customers. At one point after the last jedi, they floated the narrative that their critics were Russian bots. It was insane.
It’s not all Kennedy’s fault. The knuckle-dragging, regressive side of the fanbase was already looking for a fight. Both sides have needlessly antagonized each other.
She didn’t divide the Fanbase UA-cam did.
@@Dr.LongMonkey When did she say that?
I’m seeing so many people come up with so many damn excuses for Disney flops but then when it’s other studios, no one has any problem calling it a flop. Sometimes people even egg the haters on. Dial of Destiny is performing on the level of The Flash yet this one is “not that bad”???? What?!
So damn true.
I am guessing she must have a boatload of blackmail material because she would have been fired years ago
Kathleen Kennedy is the walking definition of it's who you know not what you know 😐🤨 For someone to be so hateful to a fan base that she leaves Star Wars in a bad situation and to let the budget for Indy 5 go over $320 mill and still keep her job.....mind blowing. I wonder if Iger is sat in his office thinking....hmmmm Back to the Future is a beloved franchise so let's get Kennedy right on to that remake
Fortunately BTTF is a Universal IP, and Zemeckis has made it clear that he will NEVER allow a BTTF remake.

Studios still haven’t understood that we can’t afford to go to the movies every weekend
Say that louder for the people in the back who are not listening!!
_Indiana Jones_ brought back people who hadn't been to the movies since before the pandemic (as did _Avatar_ and _Super Mario.)_
@@sandal_thong8631 box office disagrees
Why she would make a comment against SW fans yet craft a sequel trilogy aimed directly at them is behind me
Syndical ploy to get the audience of old fans and then screw them over
The movie wasn't bad.
Worse than Velma? Isn’t hate watching’IN’?
“The clearance bin!” Classic Grace honesty 🤣🤣🤣
What is the deal with Kathleen Kennedy? I feel like someone needs to do a deep dive on her for a video
The deal is that she has been in Hollywood for decades. She knows where skeletons are buried, and could take people down with her if anything is ever done to her.
She is a female executive for a popular brand so she gets more hate from fans than Weinstein. She's had some hits, she's had some dumpster fires. 300 Mil for a dead franchise is insanity, though
Indiana Jones ended with Last Crusade. This was true 30 years ago, 20 years ago, a decade ago and its still true now.
Well that was before the internet destroyed the world. If Last Crusade came out this week everyone would hate on it.
@@luciusblackwood2640bullshit
@@luciusblackwood2640 LOL. No. Last Crusade was beloved when it came out. It treated its source material well and provided a good ending, with the protagonists literally riding into the sunset.
The reason people hate on sequels is primarly because they arent well made, but also because they are inherently needless and blatantly cash grabs.
@@omrmajeed No, people would have nitpicked it into the ground like they do everything now. It would have been called a needless cash grab as well.

I’m off work tomorrow, but I’m still doing my Sunday evening routine beginning with Movie Math. This summer’s box office is looking ROUGH.
Never have I thought in a million years that Indiana Jones 5 could potentially beat John Carter as the biggest box office bomb of all time, but here we are.
What’s ironic is that both are early 20th century pulp genre serials or pulp genre inspired works.
Absolutely love movie math. Look forward to it each week!
It’s time for a big Lucasfilm shakeup at Disney. I’m not a Kennedy hater (she’s had a few hits), but if you make this many mistakes you deserve to lose your job.

5:18 YESSS I love when Grace curses!!
And they both had Phoebe Waller-Bridge.
Transformers literally had a good drop this weekend just like elemental, Spider-Man, and little mermaid. They were the only movies with good drops. Also not bad considering it’s an upward trend atleast domestically from the last 2 transformers movies
Too bad the international portion dropped compared to the previous ones
Exactly 👏🏽👏🏽💯💯
Sound of Freedom is coming out in theaters on the 4th of July.
Going to be the first movie I have watched in theaters in years. Caviezel actually wants us to watch it, and hasn't done the typical Hollywood thing of telling the fans that they are irredeemable scum. It's refreshing.
Indiana Jones got the Jake Skywalker treatment.
I honestly think if it was a grandfather and grandson movie would have been better
Western society *HATES* white males now. Everything has to be either black or female or gay or trans.
@@BaithNaWhat excitement?
As for Elemental, once upon a time people would see a Pixar film simply because it was a Pixar film, quality was a given. these last few years, not so much
Maybe if Disney didn't put Pixar films like Soul, Luca, and Turning Red on Disney+ for streaming instead of waiting for covid portacals to relax like Tom Gun Maverick, people might look at those films as 🎥 instead of streaming.
Indiana Jones doesn’t have the pull with the younger audiences that Disney wish it had.
I usually give Grace flak most of the time, but I gotta say she at least tells it as it is when the dust settles. Nice Movie Math!
It's like agreeing to disagree.but you gotta admit, she knows her sh*t.
No one does a better movie math consistently.
How can someone have worked with the best filmmakers of the last few decades and not picked up anything? It boggles the mind.
Cognitive bias can’t be treated and Kennedy is a prime example of that
Remember how in the end of Back To The Future, Marti’s parents changed and it made you feel good
It's 110-118 degrees here in Vegas, so I'm guessing the top-tiered theaters will be completely full.
Kennedy could not just run the company and let the creators create, her insistence is insert herself in the "creative" process and insert herself in Lucas films content sunk all it's franchises.
So sad
60 million should had been the Budget for indi, not the first week not numbers
Watching her fail is no longer sad now it's entertaining
Plan to see teenage Kraken but had to see joyride to free up reservations.
Hollywood seems like it doesn’t know where the pulse is.
Been waiting for these Indy numbers all week! Thanks Grace❤
As Grace said in the spoiler review of dial of destiny, WHY can’t ppl understand that ‘those who make sth should love sth’.
Honestly I cringe when I hear KK has billion doll successes, I mean star wars was a license to print money at the time. Anyone could've been the head of Lucas film at the time and it would've done well. She's successfully ran Lucas film into the ground
"if she can't get this right, she can't get anything right"
Did .......
“ I told you Steppenwolf would fail”

Feels like a massive portion of the industry just can’t do numbers right now.
just learned about the absurd $380M for indy… they’re making impossible to profit out of these movies
How does kk make a million dollar franchise ? Easy, you just give her a billion dollar franchise
Kathy Kennedy won't survive this. It's over for her.
i'm so happy that grace is finally watching rebels 🤩
Iger needs to put a hold on all Star Wars until Kathleen Kennedy leaves so nothing else gets ruined and the new head can decide what to do with the shows and movies
5:18 As Cap would say, "Language!" 😄
I have been a fan of Kennedy's since the 80's, and have defended her up until a few years ago. But with this film (which, I admit, I enjoyed, with some caveats), I now am having SERIOUS doubts about her. This franchise, which is one of her first big successes, should be a no-brainer slamdunk success at this point.
6:47 I'm glad you've joined Team Filoni, Grace. 😀
Story telling in Hollywood is dead. Creativity is dead.
Such a shame, it was one of my favorite franchises linked to many happy childhood memories
The good thing about those happy childhood memories is that they aren't going anywhere 😊
Even if it doesn't make money, it could still be good or make you feel good when you see it. I felt good seeing Michael Keaton as Batman again, though the ending of _The Flash_ was depressing.
Grace has some balls saying Kenedy wasn’t successful for movies
Stepping down for personal reasons is the business equivalent of quitting before your made to leave
I can't believe KK has been around so long. Lucasfilm could have been turned around and saved from so much irreparable harm.
When are you going to review Sound of Freedom?
A kathleen kennedy netflix documentary will break all records.
In South Korea, Elemental got to No 1!! The box office is 3 times that of Spidervers. Maybe the Korean sentiment got us 😂😂😂
I loved both movies especially the dobly experience❤
How could you have numbers for July 2. It isn't over yet?
As Grace has said, Sunday's box office is very predictable based on Friday's plus Saturday's. I thought things might be different with the heat advisory warnings and the Tuesday holiday, but apparently it was like a typical Sunday. However, I think one Sunday recently, she said they had to adjust their numbers that day.
2:19 "she did deliver several billion dolar films". No Grace she didn't. The Star Wars brand did it before she damaged it.
She still produced them, over the course of several years.
Phoebe didn’t bring in any women and also kept men away.
I reckon the fear of not having a solid replacement lined up is the main factor she has remain so long.
i think some random guy they picked off the street would do a better job than she has for at least the last decade. How you can mess up Indiana Jones is beyond me.
Can you please do more on the little mermaid? I keep seeing people argue it’s very successful on social media and it’s so intriguing
@@ebert311 - sure it will be profitable for disney if you include all the merchandising options. But theatrically its only a mediocre box office return or slightly successful. Im sure disney was expecting or hopping for $700 - 800 mil.

If the summer blockbuster season has fizzled so far, could it be a sign of broader economic malaise, rather then anything to do with Hollywood or politics?
It could be all the above
Her decisions objectively show she wasn’t even a business person….She brings nothing but destruction to all that she has touched at Disney Lucasfilm

Can't wait to see insidious the weekend. I haven't seen any trailers so i'm really hyped
When you’ve lost a billion dollars in movies, and then lose Indiana Jones on top of that, I would fire her as a peace offering to the fans.
I agree. It was a good ending to one of my favorite franchises of all time.
Filoni should run Star Wars and Favreau should take over Marvel. Feige’ s done.
