  • In this one i will do a screen replacement on a Macbook Pro Retina 13" model. This one was A1502 but same procedure is for A1425 which is the older model. Both have the same screen, both are done the same. I haven`t done many of these, so i haven't gotten this to perfection in terms of a time frame, so video is not short. It is close to perfect in terms of how clean this needs to be done. When i get to the point of doing this very fast i will update it, but this will show you how to do it properly.
    If by watching my video you get discouraged to do it your self, which i hope you will :) contact me, i offer repair services.
    You can directly purchase this repair service on the link below:

    Check out my website at:

    Hope you enjoy it, and this helps you out.

    Thank you for the videos! You are awesome for showing the people how to "do it themselves" Also, I run a computer repair shop, and after skimming through this, there is no way this will be done in shop! For $100 more for entire screen assembly, makes this a 10 min job. I charge very little in flat rate labor, so even for the customer this is a good fix. You even say "I don't recommend this" at the start of the video. Thank you again for helping the community of planet earth! Spread the knowledge!!

    A really nice clear video. For anyone who is going to do it - make absolutely sure that you are as practised and skillful as Milan before you start. Especially in easing off the screen after heating it - do it exactly as he shows or you will damage the diffuser sheets. For myself, as an infrequent changer of Mac bonded screens, I would get the complete screen assembly. Or, of course, send it off to Milan. I did try some diffuser sheets from a scrap screen but, because they were slightly too narrow and retained differently there would have been bright lines down the sides of the display and the sheets would have moved over time under the screen panel. So it would not have been an acceptable repair - shame as the screen looked great when temporarily fitted.

    Thanks for this video, I used this a basis and can now comfortably perform this job in around half an hour (providing the original LCD comes out nicely, without leaving cracked glass around the edge!). I now have the task to refurb around 50 lids and also teach others how to do it too.
    It's a really satisfying job to complete, especially as I was always under the impression it basically could not be done!
    Thanks for the great work Milan. 😀😀😀😀😀

    Thank you very much! I replaced my screen with the help of your video and the ifixit article for removing the screen assembly. I also replaced the battery while I was inside. A hair dryer just isn't hot enough, but I wasn't wanting to try a heat gun out of concern of preserving the white diffusor sheets underneath the screen. I nicked one of the diffusors on the corner, but it is not obvious and I have to seek it out to find it. I was able to soften the adhesive by placing the screen in a hot car. The adhesive dissolves with 'Coleman' fuel to make a thorough cleaning easy. Launch a GoFundMe and we'll help you buy a lapel mic and a GoPro!

    Thank you for this nice video! I was wondering if the screen assembly of a a1425 model (late 2012) is also the same as the a1502 (early 2015)? My screen has a line in the middle and i still have a old a1425..

    Hi Milan, just want to say thanks for uploading the videos! I started a website in UK back in July and I am making a nice amount on the side to my day job thanks to your Macbook Air and Retina videos.
    Just wondered if you had any tips for prying the Retina screens, now you have done more now? I have done around 8-10 of these and still crack it when prying, can't get my head around it. Really annoying repair, and still can't cut down the time. Got a long painting knife tool to slide in which works well, but having trouble finding a longer one, as it would make the repair a lot easier. Prefer the Air's, much easier :)
    Thanks for taking the time to read this, wish you all the best

    Hi Jakub. For some reason instead of replying to your question I clicked remove so I do apologize for that and hope you get this comment as a reply at least. For your question, to be honest, I use the same screen on all a1425 and a1502 models that came out from 2012 until today. No issues no ghosting no programming needed, and no returns or issues whatsoever. I don't have the part number of the screen on me now but I will write it down for you so you know what I'm using, on Monday most likely. I'm pretty sure which ever one u get that it will work just fine and that this vendor is wrong abt having to program the screen.

    Awesome video! So what do the sheets under the screen do? Do they make an electrical connection that can be broken or do they just sit there? Would just touching them, moving them, or wiping them off ruin them?

    • @milanstojic3295
      @milanstojic3295  8 років тому +1

      Physically, they just sit there. Functionally, there is no electrical connection, but what they do is filter backlight and provide that good color effect that retina has. They are also a heat barrier between the backlight plastic and LCD, and they are cold diffusers apparently. Touching them gently with clean hands, ok, you have to be careful tough. Wiping them with anything, total destruction!!!

    Hi Milan, Very good video. I've tried but after replacing the LCD the rubber band does not fit good in my case. The point is that suddenly the screen powered off. After trying to reboot the rmbp the screen and the back Apple logo were off. I've tried with a friend screen and also the same, the weird thing is that in both case the iSight camera works fine. I've checked the display connection and seems to be ok. Do you have any advise on this? Thanks!

    • @milanstojic3295
      @milanstojic3295  9 років тому

      ***** Not sure about the rubber. If you haven't stretched it out to much when removing it should fit just fine. Also, you did follow the video and put the rubber on the screen before installing the screen back in the case? Make sure that there is no glass in that little gap where the rubber goes into, because this can also cause rubber not to get in between the LCD and the case properly. As far as no video, i can tell you that you most likely blown something in the backlight circuit on the board, or on the screen itself, but since you said you tried another screen and its the same, this happened on the board most likely. Not sure how you did it, or what you did wrong, but i can try to help you out with this, as i do repair boards as well. Email me for more info: macrepairdude@gmail.com

    Hi, I have a small repair shop and partly thanks to your video I finally decided to try this myself after replacing many complete assemblies. It went perfectly, except for two sort of minor problems. 1, the LCD layer itself I didn't managed to get off from the adhesive at all cleanly, so had to break it all along the edges to then remove it. Very lengthy. 2. The backlight then didn't work, and I was able to determine that it was due to my new LCD, unfortunately.
    Two questions: is a heat gun much better with repairs like this? For everything else I do, a professional line hair dryer has been pretty much fine (I know you may laugh). If so, is there a certain model or wattage you'd recommend? I'm considering buying the 1400W gun that iFixit sells in Europe. It has two power settings: 300°C (step 1), 500°C (step 2).
    Also, can you send a link to the tool that you used to open up the LCD adhesive around the edges? I tried the iOpener thing (which works perfectly for the Air LCD) iFixit sells and the plastic spudger, and neither worked very well here.

    • @milanstojic3295
      @milanstojic3295  8 років тому

      Heat gun beats any hair dryer. 1400w is perfect. The tool I have is not something you can buy online. iFix sells crappy thick ones that I grind down on a knife sharpener to be thin and smooth and sharp as a razor. You can try that

    Hi Milan...i'm having a small problem. I replaced the LCD. I tested before the full assembly and it was working. i then assembled it fully and had no image. I conected the macbook to a TV and i had image and it worked well. I borrow an equal model from a friend of mine and tested the lcd with the damaged macbook and had no image also. I was very careful with the replacement, I have some experience with lcd's replacement (Smartpones & tablets) and know the rules of "be careful with the battery...tape the conectors with kapton tape, etc..). i just managed to fix my own screen but with moderate success, the screen and everything works but i now have a couple of red digits on my screen, and im sure it is a protective film that i somehow forgot to take off :/, i can probably live with it but if there is a way of disassembling it again and remove the film... especially if the screen protector is on the inside... then the glue might just be stuck to the film and hopefully im able to take the screen of leaving only the screen protector glued... what would you do in a situation like this? buying a new screen is possible, but if you have any ideas to how i should approach my issue, ill be really happy :)
    further more thank you ALOT for making this video... couldnt have done it without it :)

    • @milanstojic3295
      @milanstojic3295  9 років тому

      That actually sucks, and I know your pain. I've done it before on different models so now I'm extra careful about it :-) It is possible to take the new screen out but it won't be easy if the tape settled. You are saying glue so I do hope you didn't use the glue because in that case you will crack it for sure. Use some heat and be gentle. U might be able to take it out without cracking it.

    • @kimJchristiansen
      @kimJchristiansen 9 років тому

      Milan Stojic shit! :) i was hoping that since the protective film is still on i might be able to take the screen off easier, because the screen protecter is easy to peal off... thus only leaving the screen protector taped to the frame?
      *correction: i didnt glue it i taped it with 5mm black double sided tape

    • @milanstojic3295
      @milanstojic3295  9 років тому

      Well the screen protector should be on the LCD part of the screen only and not on the side glass. You do have to peel off the top and sides of it and unscrew the bracket if you taped the bottom metal bracket as well. Than hold the screen under the angle and try to peel off the protective sheet. Do not let it touch the inner layers because it will connect to it and get stuck on it. U might damage those diffusers like that. Use a little bit of heat, not to much, you don't want to burn the front glass. Let's hope that tape didn't connect that much so u can peel that off without cracking it. Don't forget to unscrew that bottom metal bracket. That one connected for sure!

    • @milanstojic3295

      Sounds like a backlight issue. It's a part of her assembly and connected to the screen board. It's difficult to say without looking at it. If you have a spare assembly you could connect it to see if it works with it though. I would say take it to someone for an estimate to check that out.

      @milanstojic3295  8 років тому +1

      No idea what you are referring to. Backlight sheet is a plastic which is below 3 thin paper like sheets. If you have some of the tape that was holding the screen Going on those sheets (diffuser sheets) than use tweezers to carefully pull it off.

    Hi, I noticed that an older model, i.e. A1238 can be replaced only the Glass Screen, not the LCD (if the LCD is okay).. Does A1502 Retina model designed the way that u just cannot replace the Glass, but both need to replaced? I have not seen a vendor selling just Glass, but they are selling the LCD.. I wonder it comes as one piece when you order. I contacted some vendors but they cannot tell, since they are dealing with so many LCDs.. Any info will be appreciated..

    • @milanstojic3295
      @milanstojic3295  8 років тому

      Nobody sells the glass because there is no glass screen on this model. LCD is fused to the glass you refer to and this glass is actually a part of it and has to be replaced. If you have a crack it is not on the glass. Your LCD is cracked and you need a new one

      It can be your fault, or the defective display. There is no way of me knowing what is wrong with it before seeing the computer. Check if you plugged in the small connector next to the screen connector on the little board of the LCD. That's the backlight connector

    it looks to be possible, I will have a go. The one I got online looks like it has a protective sheet on both sides (digital numbers on the screen and back of lcd), but I dont get a grip to remove it. scared to scratch. any Idea?

      Thanks, but I dont feel an egde. in fact I am in doubt if there is a cover there at all.. the backside of the lcd should be without any printing, right? no digital numbers, just a smooth mirror-like surface?
      Thanks again...

    • @milanstojic3295
      @milanstojic3295  9 років тому

      If there is nothing in the back just a smooth mirror like surface than u don't have any protection and you will need to clean that up so you don't have marks and fingerprints on t when you close it. If there is any print than you have the protective Gil there. Be careful, if you dig up the corner and nothing is there you will break it. If you need to clean this use dry toilet paper. Soft one, not one of those thin see through one, the softest y can find. Like that you won't scratch anything and you will manage to clean it, blow the dust and lint off of it with air and than put it back in as per video

    Help please. I accidentally yanked the camera connector off of the logic board instead of just unplugging the cable. Do you know if there's a way to repair this damage? Maybe solder it back on?

    • @milanstojic3295
      @milanstojic3295  8 років тому

      Yup. That would be your only option. I suggest you don't do it yourself and get professional help as you should have before attempting this to begin with

    • @lilsis
      @lilsis 8 років тому

      +Milan Stojic is that something that you've heard happen before and got fixed? I'm not sure where to go to get it fixed

    • @milanstojic3295
      @milanstojic3295  8 років тому

      +lilsis You can either take it to a specialized electronics repair shop that knows how to do micro soldering. It depends on what kind of damage you did to the traces, but it can be fixed. I do this kind of repair as well, I just have to see it to know the extent of damage you made. Soldering repair on your board is pretty pricey. You could have paid $300 to get that screen replaced, now you will pay another $200-300 to get the board fixed or live without the iSight and buy a USB camera. This is exactly why many of us making these videos stress out not to DIY if you r not skilled so it doesn't cost you double

    • @lilsis
      @lilsis 8 років тому

      +Milan Stojic I was watching your video and saw that you just pulled it off so I mimicked how you did it. It was a very amateur mistake that I made. If it's gonna cost that much, I guess it's best to just use usb camera. I wouldn't want to pay too much or replace the entire logic board just for the camera. I thought it could be around $100 to be able to fix it. :(

    • @milanstojic3295
      @milanstojic3295  8 років тому

      +lilsis I really doubt someone will do a proper job for a $100 but don't give up on it. See if you can find someone. Ask around. If not than a USB camera is the only solution.

      Fun a broken assembly open it up without damaging then again and than take them out and replace yours. If you can't, buy yourself a new screen assembly, and in the future don't attempt repairs like this to avoid additional cost ad have a professional service do it. Also don't try to purchase white sheets online. Any and every seller selling them has no idea what he is selling and the sheets you will receive will arrive damaged. There is no way to transport these other than on a vacuum space and separated to avoid damage. Nobody does that!

      It's a 3m tape, I don't know the exact marking since I don't have any of that and am using another which I had, which has no marks on it. Size is 5mm wide and I believe it was Core 4000 series or something like that. Don't hold me on that. There are hundreds of 3m tapes out there but I would suggest u do, go to www.rossmanngroup.com and grab one.

Try to find something similar on Utrecht. They have painting knives that are very thin and might help with this repair.

    Very detailed video, thanks! Guys from Uncover (uncovermac dot com) customize the apple logo on the lid by "...carefully taking apart the top case and use a laser cutter to cut out a beautiful design, before putting it back together again, with a filling of high strength polycarbonate plastic inside the design, half translucent of course, to let the light through." I just wonder how are they able to take it apart and put it back together without damaging anything.

      +Brownkevin7 You either have a wrong part or a wrong computer you are looking at here. Glass and LCD are fused together and there is no separating them. Especially no saving the glass when you take it off as you can't take it off in one piece. If you indeed have a retina than you missed some parts of my video, and big time! If you removed the glass and left the LCD I'm pretty sure you messed up the assembly
