Thanks for the video! You asked why anyone would want to remove the screen if it's not broken. The answer is to replace the right monitor hinge, because it cannot be replaced without removing the monitor (one of the cables that's part of the hinge assembly runs underneath the monitor).
Very well done tutorial. The metal spudger looks very similar, if not identical, to some that I bought at a flea market decades ago, the man said they were used for sculpting wax. Used them for final assembly on motorcycle engines.
I have a question. After seeing your video, I would love to try and perform the repair myself. I have extensive experience with fixing phones and laptops and just wondering where you managed to source the LCD Retina Panel from.

Milan Geeksquad wanted $980 to replace a cracked 2013 15" screen. I ordered the complete brand-new assembly (upper case and all) for $230 on Ebay and replaced it myself in about 20 minutes using the beginning of this video. Thanks for helping me save big bucks. :)

Hernan Borelli His reply was from a year ago. I would just look for an assembly on eBay as he suggested. There are many. Don't by a broken one :-) Also make sure you buy the proper year. Up to 2015 one screen, after 2015 different screen

Hi Milan, my camera on my A1398 laptop stopped working after replacing a speaker. I may have damaged the cable while removing it, as the camera ID still shows up in the system information, but the green camera light blinks and the camera is black. There is no visible damage to the cable. I've tried doing an SMC battery reset and nothing solves the black screen. To replace the Camera cable I would have to remove the LCD as you are doing in this video. What would you charge for this repair? I have a new camera cable, is it worth trying to do myself? I'm assuming I'd need to buy a new LCD as I'd crack it removing the original. I can not find a new LCD for the A1398 anywhere online, only the full-screen assembly. Would you recommend just replacing the whole assembly? Of course, that would be the most expensive way. Please let me know what you would recommend. Thank you.

What is this metal screen piece that you removed that was attached to the rubber. I think I may have damaged it. I need a replacement and cannot find it.
I had to order the rubber replacement but that long strip attached to it, I'm not sure if it comes also with the rubber. Please help and letting me know what part this is. I can't find it.

I think you have answered the question but just to clarify: Are all the retina LCD panels the same from 2012 - mid 2014. I.e. can any LP154WT1 (SJ) A1 or A3 be purchased to replace a broken LCD, backlight is working on a 15" mid 2014 macbook pro retina?
No idea on the part numbers. I don't memorize useless info. 2012 model has its own LCD, 2013 and 2014 it's own LCD, and 2015 has its own LCD. For specific part numbers refer to your own screen. When you take off the plastic hinge cover and unscrew the controller board you can read on it which screen you need. Best is to start there, read and buy compatible

Hi Milan, nice video. I need the rubber trim to be replaced on a late 2012 retina MacBook Pro 15". It has become brittle over time and it is falling apart. The screen is perfect. I understand that when you do a screen replacement, having the rubber trim attached to the panel is critical for centering the lcd panel in place. In my case, do you think it can be done without removing the lcd panel and working the rubber into place? How much would it cost to do it?
I liked how you were able to reassemble it with fewer parts than Apple needed. Those Hinge Brackets you left sitting on the desk were just in the way, right?
Greg Page Or maybe if you would have watched the video to the end you would have noticed that i didn't put the rubber covers on the screw, metal brackets over the hinge neck, and bottom with all screws back on!!! Or you just wanted to leave a stupid comment for someone who actually posted something that helps others make money, or save money!
Sure i give my customers laptops back without all of these!!! Here, you don't need the bottom, it looks cool without it! Nor these two rubber covers, or useless hinge brackets... No Greg, i don't leave parts out and i put them back in. Regardless of weither i think they are needed in there or not, and God knows there are useless parts in there, not needed in the first place, but i do it so my customers can take it to Apple if ever needed to get their warranty for other issues, and it looks like it was never opened!
Hey love your video just tore ribbon cable down at bottom of screen. The controller board ribbon (the fat one on the very left) any chance I can fix this. If not do you know where i can get the lcd only? Do you have a link?
thank you for this, i think i may try doing it myself... it's not nearly as involved as i thought it might be. one question, though, when you heat the screen, exactly how hot are you making it? what is the temperature of the gun you are using?
I can't tell you how hot it is. My heat gun has 2 speeds. Fast and slow. I hear it up to the point it feels warm to the touch of my palm.

Hairdryer is much weaker than this. This would melt the hair off your head with the skin altogether. You can use the hairdryer but it will take and require much more time

My display is not cracked, I was thinking of changing the back cover to get rid of the dents that the previous owner put in it... I'm not thinking of doing that anymore... Now to find a cheap complete display with the updated coating that doesn't flake off (mine is a mid-2015, so it already has that, but the older ones were crap)...
are there ungenuine screen replacements seen, might any quality difference spotted on parts available?
Can I do this to clean the inside of my MacBook Pro 16" display? I have spilled wine on my MacBook and when I tried to shake the wine out of it some of it got inside the display, so now there are visible stains on the display... :`(

My eyes hurt immensely when I use my MBP 2015. And I love it too much to just get rid of.
I have never heard of such a screen. What you can do is buy one of those screen protectors that is Antigone and get rid of the gloss like that. They cover the whole area of the screen and stick to it. Very thin also

As you have mentioned the camera light issue, the same problem i am facing with the screen assembly i bought on ebay, i think because of the screen not fixed properly the light of the screen reflects on camera damaging image clearity, when i pushed screen back from the camera side its getting clear otherwise its not.

If the webcam cable breaks (the part that plugs into the logic board is kind of fragile), you would need to take out the screen to replace the cable.

Hi. My A1398 has a black screen, and have tried all the software attempts to fix. Nothing. Anyone know if I can try to replace the CABLES to the screen first, (see if that works?) before I pay out for a whole screen? No. 2015 model has a different and more expensive LCD. You have to order that one or have someone do this job properly so it doesn't cost even more
Hey Milan, I cracked my screen on the same exact model that you're fixing, how much would it cost to get fixed by you?
I charge $300 for this. Parts and labor included (LCD replacement only). If the case is damaged and whole assembly needs a replacement than its a $100 more.

i have the a1398. my screen is perfect, but the glass is messed up in some areas from using the wrong cleaner(something other than water like they tell you, yes im stupid) Can this be replaced?

Can you give beginner guide in terms of specification of the screen. thanks
i have never seen a screen of a different resolution for a retina. as long as it is an OEM screen and proper year it will fit and work just fine on your laptop if you choose to install it. make sure you check which year it is, 2015 and beyond have a different screen than prior to 2015 models.

Milan Stojic i ended up getting it fixed by apple, since it was only a few months old and not ready to take risks yet. It was $700 its a shame that applecare didn't give a discount but i guess apple could be using that money for something good (sarcasm). But anyway thanks for your help and if something else happens your my go to guy.

Than you missed somethings watch the video again and retrace the steps. Or get someone who knows how to do this to do it before you do worse damage, if you already haven't.

+jose luis romero sosa If you are a technician than I'm sure you'll figure it out on your own. Many technically illiterate people used my video to do the repair properly by carefully listening to, and watching at what I do. I would suggest watching it again so you can see where you made the mistake. If not, than find a better video with camera focused better.

Just search for the a1398 replacement screen. eBay, Amazon, bunch of other places selling screens on their own website on the web...depending on the vendor u r looking at 190-250 for the screen only. About 400 for the whole assembly. Tools u need is, or the ones I'm using, small precision Philips screwdriver, T5 screwdriver, regular heat gun or a hair dryer, scissors, double sided tape, and most important tool, long and very thin metal pryer!
Significantly harder when doing it on a retina!

No. You need to replace the lcd. There is no such thing as glass on this model.

If it was turning on before you started and doesn't now when you finished that means you made a big mistake along the way. Sometimes getting professional help is best, or DIY attempts cost much more than they should of taken to a person who knows it to begin with. There are YT videos on fixing teeth believe it or not, but I don't attempt doing something I have no clue how to. I'll go to the dentist for that! I'm sure you know what I mean...

LP154WT1(SJ)(AV) is what I tried to put into A1398 EMC 2881. co2p7bblg3qd No wokey.
All a1398 models from 2012 to late 2014 have the same screen and any non defective screen you put in there will work unless you damaged something (I have had a perfectly good looking LCD cable not work after replacement, replacing it fixed the issue). 2015 model has a different screen. Only that one needs a specific screen. I care very little about part numbers of these screens. My supplier knows what I need when I ask for a specific retina screen.

+Milan Stojic 2014 I believe based on the serial number lookup. I'm on Louis's backlight videos, but it may be a no display issue. Not sure yet. I did shine a light through the back and don't see anything, so it may be no display.

99.9% chance you will crack the screen trying to push it in there even if you are careful. I wouldn't do it

What are the films under the screen? I touched them before even knowing I shouldnt.
Diffuser sheets. Pretty much filters for light, color effect and clarity of the picture that retina has. If you touched them, not a big deal. If you left marks on them than a big deal. You will see them under the new screen you install. Touching usually results in leaving marks unless you are really careful.
+Milan Stojic Damn. the screen i'm replacing was all cracking and I couldn't separate the screen from the bottom + films in one smooth go as it was cracked apart. I used gloves to slide the films out while I cleaned the rest of the glass from the sides.

+Austin Kline yeah. You wanna make sure you have those when you close it up. Especially if you want proper picture on your LCD
