What can you say about the Dead? They are legendary. They make wonderful music. They have a large worldwide following. Been a Grateful Dead fan since 1965.
@@gingeroo5765 Jerry Garcia opened a dictionary and at random and saw "Grateful Dead" which, according to European folklore, meant a person who was charitable to a widow or orphan of someone who recently died, and pays for the funeral. Later, this person is assisted out of a crisis by the ghost of the 'grateful dead' who had come back to repay the favor. Also, by some, thought to have been found in Egyptian folklore.

@@frederickbays In the oral history "This Is All a Dream We Dreamed" by Blair Jackson and David Gans write that "Late in life Jerry tellsthat he found the name in the Funk & Wagnalls Folklore Dictionary when his finger landed on that phrase while playing a game of “Fictionary.” In Garcia’s biography Captain Trips, the author Sandy Troy said that the group was smoking the psychedelic drug DMT at the time."
You should check out this song and Fire On The Mountain from the live album Cornell 5/8/77. Those two songs were almost always played together and transition seamlessly, it’s even groovier live and that show is considered one of the best. The Dead have some great studio stuff but live is really where they shined, in the moment improvisation was key to the band
Dead are their own groove altogether, some of the coolest, sweetest fans on Earth and the band are great and (some of) the lyrics are truly sublime, reach deep into your soul and may take years to comprehend...but you'll get it..."Love is real, Not fade away!"
Grateful Dead is an Acquired taste. And I never Acquired the Taste of it! But For you, and all those Who Enjoy them I say, " Rock on Dead Heads" ! 😁 I'll give a Listen, & Like because you are Such an open minded , and Classy young Man! Until next time. Peace, & Love ✌️
I like your comments, they show you are really listening. The line "Well I ain't often right but I've never been wrong, seldom turns out the way it does in the song", kind of sums up the whole Grateful Dead ethos to me. Just take life as it comes, and you will be all right. i saw them about 50 times, and caught quite of few "Scarlet's", but live they always segued into "Fire On The Mountain", we Heads called it "Scarlet/Fire", and it always meant it was a good show. Try some live recordings, the Dead allowed their fans to tape, and Sound Guru Dan Healy even let tapers to plug into the soundboard, so the recordings are usually high quality. Enjoy, and welcome aboard the bus. Listen to "The Other One" to understand.
Stay away from the studio recordings. And always have a copy of the lyrics handy whenever reacting to the Dead. Like this tune...it has, in my opinion, one of the greatest lyrics ever written. "Once in a while you can get shown the light, in the strangest of places if you look at it right" - Robert Hunter
If you are going to go down the rabbit hole that is the Dead know that it is VERY DEEP. Be ready to hear something completely knew every time in style and musical genre. There is always a common thread but the sound is wildly varied
'shakedown street' is a great starting point, if you like this song maybe also check out 'fire on the mountain', 'chinacat sunflower', 'franklins tower', 'the music never stopped', 'crazy fingers', 'eyes of the world', 'throwing stones', 'estimated prophet', or 'dancin in the streets'. if you like the more blues style from hard to handle, most of those were early tracks with pigpen, so check out 'turn on your lovelight', 'good morning little schoolgirl', or thier cover of 'little red rooster'. also at some point check out the album american beauty, 'box of rain', 'ripple', 'brokedown palace', 'attics of my life', 'till the morning comes', and 'truckin' are some of the best and most iconic dead songs.
..."it's just really good music!" exactly. there's a lot of stuff going on here and you can't quite describe it. it's just really good music... the bus is waiting. hope you hop aboard!
Once again, I have to commend your choice. The Dead are not well-represented on their albums, not even most of their live albums.....so for you to do "Hard To Handle" and now this one......you're getting a taste of the vibes of a Dead show! No two shows were ever alike, that's a whole worm hole I won't get into - the Dead are the closest thing to a sports team there is in music. Some shows they win the game, some shows they lose! But the fans cheer them on, regardless. Anyways, thanks for sharing your reaction with us!
When it comes to Grateful Dead music go with live versions. Live Grateful Dead is to studio Grateful Dead as playoff hockey is to regular season hockey.
Zay..you definitely have a dead head vibe...peace, love and harmony ❤...Ripple is my all time favorite and they are great band to listen to live if you ever get a chance I highly recommend
Love the grooves…keep um rolling with some old school heavy acid laced Grateful Dead. The eleven 10/12/1968…make sure to read the lyrics and put your helmet on
I’ve been a Deadhead for 50 years. The greatest band ever. Start with China Cat Sunflower/I know you rider from Europe’72 and Eyes of the World from Wake of the Flood. Must be those versions, Enjoy!
I can't listen to the version on the album because it's not followed by Fire On the Mountain like in their live performances. It's like waiting for the other shoe to drop and it doesn't. Listen to the version of Scarlet Begonias into Fire on the Mountain on the recordings of the 5/8/77 concert at Cornell. It's masterful.
Check out Shakedown Street, Eyes of the World, Ripple, Brown Eyed Women, Dark Star, Fire on the Mountain, Slipknot, Help on the Way, and Terrapin Station.
When you start to dive into their live recordings you have to keep in mind that they never played a song the same way twice. So you might hear one version and say "hey, that was excellent" then hear another version and go "meh, I like the other version better". Just keep an open mind.

Mary, can you tell me anything about why they call themselves what they do? How they came up with their name or anything like that?

@Rusty Cuyler
Who gives a shit?, don’t you have anything better to do?
Grateful Dead's "American Beauty" album is in my all time top 5. "Ripple" is an awesome song & "Box of Rain" great too.
I’ll second that!
We got another one
Check out Franklin's Tower
My favorite Dead song 🥰

West L.A. Fade away , would be a great song for you ! Either the studio version of a live recording. Like 7/26/87 in Anaheim.
Franklin's tower. Gd.
“We're like licorice. Not everybody likes licorice, but the people who like licorice really like licorice.” - Jerry Garcia, Grateful Dead 💖
Once in a while you get shown the light in the strangest of places if you look at it right.
Also, you can tell it’s a studio recording because they corrected Donna’s pitch. She sound like a cat in a dishwasher live.
Just gotta poke around.....✌🎶

Jerry Garcia was in a bluegrass group too.

The Closing of Winterland: December 31, 1978 (Live). My favorite Dead recording!🌹💀⚡️

Fantastic, Thank You so much.. More Please..🙏 "Eyes of the World".. many others.. "Althea" .."Here comes Sunshine" ..
This song and SHADE OF GRAY are my favorite Greatful Dead songs. LOVE it!
Touch of Grey you mean lol
You gotta check out Shakedown Street. Truckin' and Alabama Getaway. Great love or studio.
ANd now you know: meet another Deadhead, you'll have a friend for life.
SB is the dead’s standard tune in concert. It’s done 1,000 different ways by the band and never the same.
The Dead are an acquired taste, but once you get it, it won't let you go!
Grateful Dead - "Saint Of Circumstance" 🔥🤘🤘
The real deal. Keep going in that direction!

They got a huge play book.
5/8/77 Live @ Cornell show! pick a song, any song or play it all!
Once in a while you get shown the light
In the strangest of places if you look at it right.

Now you need Fire on the Mountain, they usually play it with Scarlet live
Bro, do a deep dive into the Grateful Dead double album "Without A Net" you will be sooooo happy you did!
I can't listen to the version on the album because it's not followed by Fire On the Mountain like in their live performances. It's like waiting for the other shoe to drop and it doesn't. You should always strive to do live when you text to this band. ALWAYS
Nice no mic distortion finally
Deadheads know this as half of Scarlet Fire...
Box of Rain
When you start to dive into their live recordings you have to keep in mind that they never played a song the same way twice. So you might hear one version and say "hey, that was excellent" then hear another version and go "meh, I like the other version better". Just keep an open mind.
Scarlett without fire? Your missing out bro
You can always find a better live version of a dead song. No need to react to studio recordings.
I’d recommend something off their live album Without a Net.
