"Kid Charlemagne", "Time Out of Mind", "FM", "Home at Last", "Glamour Profession", "King of the World", "Everything Must Go", "Green Earrings", "Sign in Stranger", "Black Cow", "Do It Again", "Cousin Dupree", "Two Against Nature", "Bad Sneakers", "Bodhissatva" to name but a few. Musicianship and production second to none....
Don't forget "West of Hollywood". The saxophone outro will actually transport you. It goes on forever, except when it stops and then you play it again. Never been anything close to it!
RIP Walter Becker. I got to see them about 30 years ago and there must have been25 people on the stage between musicians and backup singers. They were amazing.
Zay, we LOVE your energy listening to Steely Dan! I honestly can say along with millions of other fans that they cannot write a bad song. Honestly, I tried to be critical but it's impossible. Even the songs that are by comparison "subpar", I end up really liking! To me and many, their albums produced almost annually between 1972 and 1980 are the best string of Rock/Jazz/Funk music ever produced. It never tires 5 decades later. Welcome to the Dandom.
Quick fact.... you know that Steely Dan was Walter Becker and Donald Fagan....and studio musicians. One guitar player...Jeff "Skunk" Baxter went on to be a member of The Doobie Brothers. Look him up. He's another MONSTER player.
This is music. We grew up when bands played their own instruments, wrote their own music, and could sing. Real musicians. Can't beat the 70s music. I think we were blessed to have that time in music history.
Great reaction zay, that's how I feel with the dan, big fan from the beginning till now , 66 years on the planet ,can't imagine life without their music, RIP WALTER BECKER, checkout all their ALBUMS , you will not regret it , 🎵🎹🎸🎷🎺🎹🔊🔉
everything about Steely Dan say's, don't stop recording until it's perfect. Elements of old jazz, new jazz, motown, rock, reggae, blues it's all there. and you know exactly who it is when you hear it. I don't think todays listeners are conditioned to appreciate it like myself through the years, and you now. listen deeply like Pink Floyd or just groove to it and both ways you're feeling the same thing... dig it.
Zay, new subscriber here!!!! First, let me tell you that your entire groove is a WHOLE vibe!!!!! Thank you for the positive energy. I have been listening to SD since the 70s and I play them every day when I get home from work. I knew you'd love this one. If you have not reacted to "Third World Man," you HAVE TO!!!! The eerieness of the keys, guitars, lyrics, oh man!!!!! Sending you love from Portland, Oregon!!!!!
@@zayzel2670 Appreciate you as well. I just went through the Led Zeppelin reactions that you did!! You've also gotta react to The Ocean by LZ. CRAZY CRAZY DRUMS!!! 🥁🥁🎼🎵🎶🎧
Absolutely the best band ever. Plain and simple, no question about it. I always liked Steely Dan from the beginning, but I came to appreciate them more in my thirties. Luckily, that appreciation has only grown in the past thirty years. You are in for a great treat if you dive into the Dan’s discography. Enjoy the ride. ✌🏼😎
You've just dipped into the tip of Dan. I can't wait to see your reaction to FM (No Static) and Black Cow! Steely Dan were two guys, Walter Becker and Donald Fagen. Becker passed in 2017 but Fagen is still going and actually touring right now. Fagen has put out some incredible Steely Dan-like solo albums, so between the original Dan albums, and Fagen's solo efforts, there's plenty to enjoy. What you'll begin to notice is how many other artists have sampled The Dan on their own records. They are a true musician's band.
Like you said. He can sing. He may not have the greatest voice but it’s perfect for his sardonic, dark lyrics. Donald Fagen and Walter Becker were freaking geniuses
Zay, got a story for you. I don't know if you remember, but I was born in Buffalo, NY ( like you :) ). I know you said you were going to school in Syracuse. Well, when I was 20 ( in 1990 ) I was attending a school in Utica, NY, a bit past Syracuse on interstate 90. We used to come back to Buffalo every weekend, and go back to Utica early Monday morning. Like I said, I was 20, and my room mate was 19. I bought a Steely Dan greatest hits cassette tape and dude, we played that thing constantly on that 3 hour ride down the 90. We knew every word to every song. That's how I fell in love with Steely Dan. From there I expanded out, because there are so many great songs not on the greatest hits album. Top shelf band, top shelf cast of rotating musicians, top shelf lyrics, all carefully and masterfully engineered. They are in a league of their own.
I knew that was gonna hit ya right. So glad you love it. They can settle into the best grooves, heal ya soul, but they can also melt your face. "Don't Take Me Alive" or "Kid Charlemagne" will spin your head around. "Deacon Blues" will transport you. "Rikki Don't Lose That Number" will get stuck in your head. Sending love to you and Zel from NOLA. Keep sharing your love of music, and keep digging!
Thanks for this one Zay! Haven’t heard this one in so so long, so I appreciate the reintroduction and the reminder of when I myself heard it for the first time! Great reaction as always!
They are a big band. Two dudes who shared a vision of what music could be. They didn't care what genre', they used what was available, and hired guys that could do it. They had the writing and arranging skills down pat. They were relentless in the studio to capture what they had in their head, so it could be presented to people. Uncompromising, artistic, musicians. They could rock, they could jazz, they could funk, they could soul, they could shuffle, they could blues. It didn't matter, they could pull it off.
Hey Zay! Since I've mentioned the Steely Dan faves (so far as I'm concerned, at least), I'll change tack and mention a different band for you. When you get time, you should check out the Weather Report (yes, that's the band name). Try the track "Birdland", the first track off their 1977 release "Heavy Weather." It features one of the best bassists of all time, Jaco Pastorius, and, according to Pastorius, "Birdland" was so good, the take heard on the album was their first take.
Hey Zay, great to see you loving Steely Dan, these guys grew up with an intense adoration of r&b, jazz & soul music so they mixed that all with rock & pop & came up with their unique sound formula. They, Donald Fagan & Walter Becker were English majors at College which also gives you an appreciation for how they came up with such extraordinarily descriptive lyrics. As their career progressed & their compositions became more refined they were constantly drafting in different musicians depending on the specific requirements of each song, they were such perfectionists with incredible ear for detail which you can clearly hear in each song. Their discography is a goldmine which you have just discovered so enjoy digging for more gold. May I suggest a few personal favourites: "Aja", "Gaucho", "Black Cow", "Home at last", "Green Earings" & "Don't take me alive", have fun Buddy!
Donald & Walter always had the finest studio musicians on their albums. Especially drummers and guitarists. Kid Charlemagne and My Old School (Larry Carlton) have superb guitar solos. By the way, Steely Dan is the name of a strap on sex toy…”So fine, so young…tell me I’m the only one”.
Hey Zay, this is what my kids use to call, Sunday morning music 🎶 🤗 l can tell you were going to really like them so happy that you do because they are another one of my favorites ✌
He is a great vocalist. Not a powerful voice, doesn't do a lot of crazy stuff, but very distinctive, classy, and definitely fits the music. Love the background singers on this one. Check out Black Friday for a whole different vibe. Love the Dan. Thought I'd get tired of listening to them over the years, but it's not gonna happen. Since I don't have satellite radio, I always have a Steely Dan cd stashed in my car.
Seen them live 19 times since 1994 and it just keeps getting better. 13 players on stage, and possibly the tightest horn section in the business. Last concert was 3rd row right center 7/3/22 at Bethel Woods NY, famous for the 1969 Woodstock concert. Next up Black Cow and Glamour Profession.
You are so right. Steely Dan, with music written by Donald Fagen (who is also the lead singer that you love so much), lyrics by the sadly departed Walter Becker, with Producer Gary Katz and some of the finest session musicians in the business, were master song craftsmen. Others have suggested the song "Kid Charlemagne" and I very much agree. It's a song about a drug dealer who sold a drug that nobody wants anymore. It also contains one of the greatest guitar solos that you'll ever hear. I heartily endorse your deep dive into The Dan, and I hope you'll continue it. But continue to keep filed away in the back of your mind that the wondrous music of King Crimson awaits you.
Great song!!! Great Band!!! Eveberry song they compose is great!!! Remember I request that you react to "FM(No Static At All)" by Steely Dan!!! It is Fire Bro!!!!
You are loving it and we are with you!! Steely Dan is FAT!! You are going down a deep, deep rabbit hole, my friend! Woo! Your musical appreciation IQ is going to soar!
So many great hits! I adore Steely Dan and it reminds me so much of growing up Reno, NV & casinos. Recommend anything from them. My Old School, Do it Again, Dirty Work, Bodhisattva, Kid Charlemagne, FM, Deacon Blues and so many more
This Gaucho album was one they did to fulfill a contract with their record company after a rancorous breakup. This is what they sound like when they are doing music out of spite. They just can't do bad music even when they try.
Keep on sticking that pin in the discography cos you won’t find a miss anywhere. Oh and don’t miss out on the 2 albums from the 2000s cos they still had it.
Donald Fagen was always a bit insecure about his singing voice, so on the Dan's first album they had another vocalist sharing singing duties with him, but eventually Don and songwriting partner Walter Becker decided that Fagen needed to be the Dan's only vocalist because he could give their songs the style of blues/R&B/jazz - inflected vocals they wanted. He does not have a traditional pop/rock singing voice, but that actually kind of made him stand out in my mind when they started hitting the airwaves in the 1970s - and his phrasing and timing are absolutely impeccable.
Fantastic! Deep, deep rabbit hole! All songs are amazing! Try 'Do It Again' next and then 'Aja' and then 'Home at Last'! You can't go wrong with any Steely Dan song!!!
Steely Dan is totally underrated. If you love them, don't forget to try some of Donald Fagen's solo stuff. If you never heard it, download the "Nightfly" album. Similar style and just as good.
We were blown away by this in ‘80- and remained that way! Great song about a dude planning to spend the night with a couple of young hookers. The songs are like mini- novellas to me.

Deacon Blues or AJ A. Or Black CowBTW , Jon Herrington their guitarist for 25 years has a solo cd titled “Adult Entertainment “ very cool . Checkout Mind over matter or Crazy Good . Also SD ‘ s cd “Two Against Nature”
There are so many great Steely Dan songs. Deacon Blues and Hey Nineteen are two more that haven't been mentioned. There's also Dirty Work from the Can't Buy a Thrill album. It's the one hit song sung by David Palmer and not Donald Fagan.
Yes, a most enjoyable band with a smooth, jazz sound, also considered "Prog. Rock" I believe. But they can rock out at the same time. Get's you locked in like the other great bands. Do the whole discography, you won't be disappointed.

One more vote for Gaucho, one of the craziest stories and just a musical tour de force. It’s like Lou Reed wrote a smooth jazz song lol
Back in the day, I wanted to be Patti Austin. Not for her solo work, but to be a background vocalist for Steely Dan. 🥰
Same!!
