What advice would you give to a struggling student having difficulty determining their own progression?

Did you see yourself age going from a teenager to 30 or 40 gradually or suddenly? The less time you paid attention to the gray hairs sprouting or crow’s feet appearing by the eyes and corner of the mouth the more time you were living life and gaining experience. On the mat, similar deal. There’s no overnight epiphany that makes us worthy of an immediate belt promotion. But the more we show up, the more time we put on the mats, and endure the aches and pains of our less successful rolls, these add to our experience over time like a life well lived. 🤙

I coach wrestling, and I often start practice by explaining to the wrestlers four metrics for determining a successful practice: 1) did I increase my physical strength, flexibility, or cardio 2) did I learn a new technique or strategy 3) did I improve my skill at a particular technique or strategy 4) was I able to perform a new technique or strategy on a fully resisting opponent during live competition. I will often end practices by asking several wrestlers to identify one of those metrics and use it to measure how they improved during practice.
I have definitely carried this into my own BJJ training, and it gives me a clear sense of whether or not I am making progress, as well as giving me specific goals during each training session.

I think advice from me would be there’s going to be good days and bad days. But even on bad days, you’re still subconsciously getting better and making little mental notes on the next time you’ll roll.
    Amazing video Chasen!

Great video. Training log is so key for me to keep my head thinking about the right things. It's seems like a small thing but makes a huge difference. Small wins x time = big change. Thanks Chasen 👍

great video. I started doing this some journalling early as a white belt and still do this today. I rarely go back to read, but that reflection that night after practice helps me understand what worked and why. It also gives a deeper analysis on the moves we just learned and possibly have further questions.

In jiujitsu it's hard for me to see progress compared to when I am in the gym and the weight on the bar increases. I know I've gotten better because the rolls have slowed down mentally and I can think about what I want to do even with higher belts. I've noticed I have mastered the basics to a point I am finally comfortable adding new ways of doing them or working new positions. I got a purple belt with an armbar from spider guard and after he asked me to show that to him. That felt pretty cool. My current goal outside the Gracie white to blue is getting proficient with having multiple submissions from each position. About halfway there at this point. Eventually I won't suck.

I'm not a "plan" guy, but I do show up everyday. That's working so far.

I hear ya! I wasn't either until my purple belt. Then for me, I developed enough discipline to have training focuses, which stopped me from bouncing around all over the place. My growth shot up tremendously shortly after.

Judo doesn’t normally require the head to be in a position for cauliflower ear. Shooting takedowns and be put in front headlocks normally cause the flower 👊🏻
