- Craft with me while I create two fabric covers for upcoming journals using a 9 x 12 envelope as the base. Best part about this video....watch as I "undo" a mistake and the cover turns out even better than the original plan! Thanks for requesting more videos like this one! I love doing them! Hi Gayle...check to see if you have the correct size of bobbin...I bought cheaper bobbins once and they looked the same...but weren't the same size...so my thread came off the bobbin wrong and...would get messed up.....love your videos....Laurel

Gayle when I was in my 20s I got the first computerized sewing machine made.. a singer. It lasted me almost 30 years. So I went an got another singer....the quality of the machines had plummeted. I had to get another machine and this one is a Brother. In between I had an expensive embroidery machine that I sold as I never used the overpriced thing. Just a thought on your Singer. If it keeps giving you grief please take it in and make them look at it. I love my Brother machine. It's not a high end one...200 bucks at Walmart. Never has given me any trouble. But everyone loves a,different brand machine. So if you love your Singer get it an exam....see if it needs some help. The reason I'm watchin is to use my Brother to make a fabric cover journal. And I needed some guidance. Thank you Gayle you always make my day or night. You have a wonderful attitude toward everything. Hugs

Love the covers and we are learning with you. Your inspiration and encouraging words that everything doesn’t have to be perfect is so helpful. So many things we have thought through our lives is about making sure we do things perfect. I really enjoyed the ribbon edge. 👍🥰
Gail, regarding your bobbin. Don’t pull the thread up before you put the clear lid back on. Hand crank the wheel to move needle up and down a few times and it will lift the Bobbin thread up through, and under the needle. Sometimes I need tweezers to pull up a tail before I start sewing, but really good machines don’t worry about not having a tail.
For the bobbin thread problem, you might want to make sure that you are using the correct bobbin for your machine. I would buy some new ones specifically for your machine and see if that doesn't help. They look alike and a "wrong" bobbin will actually work but with minor problems like you describe.

It is no wonder your poor machine was having issues. When you sewed the lace to the cover you actually sewed fabric to fabric with no paper involved, and it was quite confused!
As usual you and your trusty machine came through with beautiful results!
I do have a question about the yo-yos on the top piece. I have always had the open side on the bottom and the closed side as the top. Your way looks cool, too, so is there a right way to do it?
I just love your positive attitude as you work and encounter challenges. I made a fabric covered journal and cut the fabric 1/4 inch wider than the card stock. Once finished stitching you could not see the card stock. The ribbon for the yellow cover is a perfect match. Thanks so much for making these tutorials Gayle.

Did you know that quilters never back stitch. They shorten thier first few stitches really small then lengthen them till they get to the the end then shorten the stitches again. I havent tried this on paper yet, but fully intend to

No clunking! Yay! Cleaning your sewing machine really works well! LOL. You know, I agree about the bobbin thread coming off because the well for it is not deep enough. I have the same issue with my machine. Love the yellow cover with the eyelet trim. Very cute! So frustrating with the raw edges of the fabric. The seamstress in me is screaming "make a pillow case out of the fabric (inside out) and leave only one end open, flip the pillow case back outward and you only have the one end to sew up." This cover is going to be adorable though. You do such great work, Gayle! I'm inspired to buy some fabric and make one! Or maybe I'll look through a bag of stuff to donate to the thrift shop and I'll find some fabric I could use. Hmmmm.... I am inspired!!!! TFS, Gayle!

I think maybe your machine needs some repair. I have the same type machine and mine doesn't do that. It wouldn't hurt for someone to take a look.

MistyRaymond I'm not sure what the setting is...I've left it wherever it was when I bought the machine. If you have a book with your sewing machine, consulting it may be of help. It's all a mystery to me. I just keep plugging along. 😄❤️

So you dont leave an end open, to access the inside of the envelope? I would think there was no reason to use the envelope, and just use card stock or even just interface. Also, i would peel off the metal closure and not have it inside. I use envelopes because i love to open both end flaps, and use them as storage pockets. I really thought thats why you would use the envelope in the first place. I like to also add a piece of card to the center of the envelope, and some tyvek to the the spine of course, but the card divides the back and front pockets in half and adds more structure to the envelope.
Iti, I like to use the envelopes because they are already sized, but everything you said is true. I prefer not to leave the envelope open as I fill my journals pretty full, so putting something in the envelope would be too much. But to each their own. 😄. Thank you for watching. ❤️
Hi Gayle. If you take a "scrap piece" of fabric and fold it in half and start sewing on it a few stitches, butt your cover up to it and sew from the scrape to your cover. It will stop your machine from eating the cover.i have done this for years as a quilter and when sewing delicate clothes fabric. Then scrap prevents the needle from pushing the thread into the hole in the stich plate. Hope this helps you. Carolyn

Wow Gayle, now I know what to do with all my smaller pieces of fabric. Make up a load of covers for people without a sewing machine and see if they sell in my Etsy shop. Your cover looks brilliant and as you say sometimes you hit a problem and you find a way to solve it. As my dear old mum used to say " it's all sent to try us".

Gayle, I'm so tickled to see that I'm not the only one who gets those little "buckles"! And, as hard as I try, they just seem to always be there. Question: You said you coffee dyed the one piece of fabric. Does it shrink then? Did you have to measure it a little bigger than the size of the envelope?
Cheryl Ann Dean I measure and cut it after it’s dried, so shrinkage is not a problem. ❤️

OMGOSH Gayle these fabric covers are gorgeous! The blooper made it look like an adorable little quilt. Now can we talk about the adorable pink fabric with the yo yos? It turned out fabulous especially with the coffee staining and the yo yos are pure perfection my friend! It so reminds me of an old quilt my beloved grandma made years and years ago. Hi Gayle. I am a quilter. You can make (or purchase) double sided binding (I make mine, you cut on the bias) and stitch on the front, iron over to the back and hand stitch to the back. It makes a lovely finish, at least for quilts. My hands got tired binding queen size quilts however. A great quilting site is the Missouri Star Quilt Company. Just a suggestion.

Cute covers! The handmade imperfections and using thrifted and vintage materials are two of my favorite things about making junk journals. I would go crazy having to sew so slowly. Are your bobbins the right size for the machine? Maybe a trip to the repair person. It shouldn’t do that, and it’s making you crazy; you are worthy of spending a little to fix it. 💕

I just found this video. Just starting out making journals and I have been looking for a way to do my covers. I love this method. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge! The first journal I made I painted the envelope and used modge podge. Although I liked the feel of it I think I will like the fabric better.
May I ask if there is some special reason to use an envelope? Sturdiness? Something else? Or is it just a matter of I tried it one day and have continued to do it? Thanks Gayle! Ice storm outside so checking tons of process videos today. Soooo helpful-thanks!
I like the weight and flexibility of the envelope. 👍. Be also used old Amazon bubble wrap envelopes and they give a fun crunch and texture too! ❤

If you used some straight pins it would hold things for you and save time as you sew, thats what i would do anyway, just a thought 😊🌺❤️🇨🇦❤️
A Second idea that works also:start sewing about the length you normally backstitch and actually backstitch first. To miter a corner you can stitch all the way to the edge, then backstitch, then fold the corner down and turn your fabric. I have a "few" little girls to sew dolly clothes for and this always worked pretty easy on the tiny clothes. LOL to much experience with those.

I love both of these covers. I am a lifelong yo-yo maker so they are near and dear to my heart. I am learning tons as you work through glitches when you do tutorials, kinda some life lessons there underneath too. The ribbon you used was beautiful. It must be wonderful to have collected all the things you might need. As I am just starting out, my husband and sister have taken me to a few thrift stores and I am starting my “collection” scaring my husband a bit...lol.....

I know this is older but you could use seam binding. They sell it already made. It would wrap around the edge of the cover.
Gayle, I love the art that you create. I don't know how you do so much so quickly! Are you just super organized? I used to have problems with my bobbin, and I had it cleaned and adjusted by a repairman, and my machine has never sewn better. I am glad that you work fast because I always have something new to learn. Happy Easter!

How do you decide what you’re going to use for the cover?
I look at the paper I’m going to use inside, consider the theme of the journal if there is one, that sort of thing. Then I come up with a cover that hopefully enhances the whole project. ❤️

I want to thank you for this video specifically. I used the tutorial for inspiration for a few fall theme journals I created. They both sold in less than 6 hours! The one thing I did differently is used the envelop opening as a pocket. I switched up around the three sides but left the envelop opening open to create a back pocket. Have you tried turning your bobbin over? How does the manual instruct you to install the bobbin?
chiyo Smith Good idea! The bobbin looks the same on both sides, so...??? And I've made sure I have the thread going the right way per the manual. I think one of the problems might be that my table is not super stable and it bounces if I go too fast. Another subbie suggested that. Guess I need a new table!! If it is inherent to that model of sewing machine, (another commenter mentioned hers has the same problem or was it Diane H who also did a Craft with me video) shouldn't Singer have something to say about that?

Hi Susie! Totally great question! Yes, you could use file folder or card stock or whatever. I make a lot of my covers from 9 x 12 envelopes just because they are cheap and the perfect size! love the way you roll. fabrics are lovely, cant wait to see the end result! a tip for sewing multiple layers of fabric is to use a walking foot on your machine, it stops any bulk/crease at the end. love it :)

Have you used that fabric spray for quilting at all Gayle? If you can get it on the material without getting it everywhere else :D it works really well to hold paper and material while you work on them. I have also used that to stick Vellum to copy paper for printing.
