I've always understood Toni Kroos' role as space and control.... He was the brain of the team, he always figured out where space is, and with his passing controlled the game and how his team used space. When a progressive pass was going to just inevitably end up coming back he would opt against it, and when a chance was on he would pass the ball to someone who could make the chance come about.... Someone like Fede (who has taken over most of Toni's metronomic passing duties) doesn't yet have the level of reading to fully understand when a progressive pass will lead to a chance and when it's likely to run into a dead end. And although Luka has just about the same passing range as Toni, they are too different for him to just slot in and do his role. And I think the player who has the most similar thinking patterns in possession currently would be Rodri at City. And since there's no more Tonis on the market, Real need to phase out the Toni role and rework their midfield instead of giving his role to Jude and Fede
