  • For students, struggling to make ends meet often comes with the territory - but while the cost of living has soared over the last year, maintenance loans have not.
    (Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)
    The result: one in four UK universities are now running food banks - according to a new survey.
    Our Business Reporter Amelia Jenne visited one of them in Buckinghamshire, to speak to students living on the breadline.

      Every parent worries about their children. The important part is raising them right to be fully functioning independent adults before you send them off.
      Thinking back to my own time at university, I remember spending at least two months just eating beans on toast for every meal. It didn’t help that my place didn’t have a working cooker or fridge for that matter. Instead we had a toaster/kettle/microwave combo, que lots of beans on toast. While I paid 19p for the Tesco value baked beans and 39p Tesco Value white sliced bread despite 25 years of inflation, Stockwell & Co Baked Beans In Tomato Sauce is 28p and H W Nevill's White Bread is 45p so you can still get by on nought. The important part is teaching them to stomach two months on just baked beans on toast which might be the issue here not being beyond poor.

    As somebody who went to university and completed my degree in 2012, i cannot recommend it to anyone. • @christianmarriott3696
      @christianmarriott3696 9 місяців тому +14

      Not if you pick a degree that is carefully chosen to match what the workforce requires..... The problem is that most student pick the 'nice' courses that they want to enjoy but which bear little resemblance to what employers are looking for.

    • @ablez2009
      @ablez2009 9 місяців тому

      @@christianmarriott3696 not totally true though. There are too many people with degrees for the available jobs which means most people miss out due to the high competition for those roles. You end up very over qualified in some basic job somewhere. In previous generation you would stand out if you had a degree level education, then it started to be that most people had a degree so a masters was the level to achieve, now even a masters may not even be enough for some roles. I’m 34 and i’m in a decent career now so i don’t care, but my degree has been utterly useless towards where i am now, so i have to be honest and warn people not to make that same mistake and waste time. Most employers favour experience anyway so my advice would be to get onto apprenticeships. Gaining the qualifications whilst gaining the actual work experience is miles and miles and miles better than getting a degree, and will land you in a decent role ready to move further up that ladder.

      No. Uni isn't the point of education. The point of education is to create employees and functional members of society.
      Universities were designed from their inception to be for the top 6% of society. The remaining 94% of a generation are supposed to participate in other kinds of tertiary training or find other gainful employment.

    I live on 50 pounds per week and I live comfortably. Well, I don't pay rent, use my bike for transportation (a bike I found in a rubbish bin which I fixed using parts from other discarded bikes), don't heat my flat, don't go to pubs, don't buy clothes, and I pay less council tax cos my income is low. Still, I have electricity, water, hot water, internet, phones (both mobile and static), and I eat well (buying reduced-to-clear food, not necessarily the food I want to eat that is). I don't go to food banks because I don't think I need it. I can even afford to have a beer or a buckfast once per week! I also travel abroad about once per year (courtesy of Ryanair the airfare is about 45 pounds in both directions).
    I have a lot of spare time (as I work for up to 15 hours per week) which I put to good use and I sleep for 9 hours every night. My life is boring but easy.
    Is it possible to live on 30 pounds? Yes, but it is not comfortable. I've done it. It is more like survival though. Still, even such a lifestyle is better than that of most working people in China, India, or Africa. Bottom line: life in UK is good. It is a pitty that most Brits don't appreciate how good it is.

    Having a part time job is necessary for university students, both for income and life experience. My sister and I and all our cousins worked while studying. I personally was forced to support myself for 99% of my university time. I was working all evenings and weekends and all holidays… Hardship is a blessing in disguise, it builds character and makes you more resourceful, in the current world only the fittest can “make it” (and I’m not talking only about money but about life in general). Here is a quote of my favourite phrase “Do what you can with what you’ve got “. And please people, let’s go to vote when the time comes, and vote wisely!!

    Students always complain. When I was a student in the 80s there used to be a bread and cheese lunch for 50p, and it was packed. Always looking for cheap food so that we can spend more on booze and nights out. This is a good exercise for students to lean budgeting and financial prudence now they are away from their parents. Suck it up and get on with it. You'll earn a fortune as a graduate.

      Because maybe most of the people ‘judging’ live in areas overrun with students! I do, there’s thousands of them where I live and I see it day in day out, the amount of alcohol you see getting carried out of Asda and Aldi by these students is staggering!! I do student houses and have to clean up after these nightly parties (and I’m not exaggerating when I say ‘nightly) the amount of money they spend on beer, wine, spirits is ridiculous! I think students have got on to the fact that they can waste money on alcohol and going out frequenting the bars and then go crying poverty to the food banks to be given free food! If the food banks didn’t allow students to go raiding the places then maybe they would have enough food and daily essentials for families who really do need to use them! And these ‘poor’ 😏students would realise instead of pissing away their money on partying they should feed themselves first.

      We need better stats really to know how serious this problem is. Having also rented in a very studenty area I can second your comment about the waste in the streets situation. High in volume, low in hygiene, low in consideration and very poor recycling efforts. I also agree that overseas students are incredibly organised at running their affairs for such young adults based on my interactions with them. This could be a legitimate problem though. I know that students have always been hard up for cash. It's typical and it's also always been considered part of the learning experience to learn that self-sufficiency is hard work. It's difficult to say whether this is more snowflake, GenZ softness or given the state of the country, stands to reason that higher education may have crossed over the line into being unaffordable, unmanageable and unfeasible like almost everything else. This is what reporters need to clarify because when people who have paid their dues and earned the right to a decent home for themselves and their families are experiences the same poverty as students, people are going to show more sympathy to the non-students.

    • @tjmarx
      @tjmarx 9 місяців тому +4

      @lee9650 Yeah no, that's a false equivalency. It's nothing like saying don't go to school if you can't afford lunch. No one is talking about groceries.
      Perhaps more importantly schooling is compulsory because it teaches you how to be an employee and a member of society. Whether you realise it or not, you use the things you are taught in school throughout day to day life. University is not.
      Everyone would like to be in a better position than they're in. Everyone, it's a key function of social animals that the individuals should always be striving to better their position. I'd like to be richer than Bezos but that doesn't mean I'm entitled to it in any way. Bettering ones position is about hard work, means and talent.
      It is fraudulent to suggest that the only means for someone to better their position is by going to university. Here are some ONS figures to help you with the facts.
      • 50% of UK university graduates do not work in their field of study. HALF!
      • Only 13% of graduates stay in the same job for more than 4 years.
      • 59.9% of first year university students are mature students (21+).
      • 57% of high school graduates do not go to university
      Skills shortage jobs tend to pay better than their non-shortage counterparts. I suggest you actually take a look at the list. A list mine you that only exists because 46% of school leavers think they have to go to university to do a handful of courses, where half of undergraduates will never work in that field anyway.
      How much paying "enough" is, seems a lot like how long is a piece of string. What I can tell you is that the median full-time income in the UK is £31K.
      IT roles, trades, technician and STEM support roles, health and social care support roles and roles relating to the arts all feature predominantly on the list.
      Many of the IT roles in question just require the relevant certs, which involve self study and passing a single paid test. Then you enter roles where the median income is £39K. There are also IT traineeships where you are paid to learn.
      Technician and other STEM support roles likewise are entry level roles often doing on the job training or at most a 1 year college certificate. Their median income is £34K
      Orchestral musicians are apparently in short supply. They make a median of 29K with only their instrument training required.
      Trades have the benefit of paid apprenticeships so you are paid to learn. After finishing the apprenticeship, skilled registered tradesmen make between £66K - £90K median depending on the specific trade.
      Business traineeships pay you to learn how to be a manager where the median income is £42K
      There is nothing stopping someone who can not afford university as a school leaver, going out to work, saving up and returning to university if that's what they really want. Remember 59.9% of uni students are mature age now, so that's clearly what many people are doing.
      You are not entitled to any position in life. You are not entitled to university. If you can not afford university, don't go. Look elsewhere for gainful employment.
