I had to use a food bank for first time in late Dec (went hungry for a week over xmas as none were open). I was off work due to a work accident in which I nearfly died (which led to severe anxiety) and had to pay over £100 council tax despite receiving only £99.35 per week SSP. I love this country in many ways, and would visit for my favourite places, but I'd honestly like to live my day to day life elsewhere, because I've just had enough. Barely had my heating on this winter. I can handle the cold as I'm pretty resisilent physically, but my flat was getting damp so had to put it on. Seeing these energy companies with record profits makes me almost vomit. I've nothing against enterprise and profit in itself, but during this crisis it's despicable for them to be making sometimes record profits. It's literally profiting from human misery. I'm actually not even that peed off anymore. I've made my decision, I just want out, I just need to figure out how.
You should have claimed Council Tax benefit.
{:o:O:}
Take care. X hope you're getting information about what support you can claim .
The last line of your comments broke my heart. Please try and get some help, you seem like a good & kind person. You matter, you are important, please remember that.
@@ansfridaeyowulfsdottir8095 Pretty much word for word from a council tax letter back in August: "We have worked out the amount you have to pay monthly and even if your circumstances change in the next 6 months, there is nothing that can be done to change the amount to be paid". I was totally unaware of this policy, and I bet most people are unless they find themselves in a similar situation to mine. I have tried hard to return to work soon, but it's taking some real time to sort my head out. So basically, my circumstances DID change, but that mattered not at all to them.
I phoned the council in January as paying this much based on my income was brutal. Seeing over £100 go out when I needed it for food was bad. The council told me I wasn't eligible for any help other than reduction. The lady I spoke to was nice and asked: "aren't you on council tax reduction?". I read her the letter and read back what I quoted above. She said "oh, well then there's nothing to be done". To her credit, she sounded like she agreed this policy was BS and sounded almost ashamed that there was nothing she could do. PS: The amounts they worked out was based on just 3 months previous earnings since I started my job.
Anyway I somehow survived the winter, and thanks for the reminder, I'm going to have to phone them again now that the new tax year is here. Hopefully I'll be able to get a reduction until I return to work, and heck maybe even get some kind of a refund for overpayments (one can dream).
@@peterhill8398 Thanks. I feel like I don't matter at all, and it's often a struggle to just bother carrying on. Your words are appreciated.
if we can afford to spend ten million pounds a day on hotels, we should be able to give people food vouchers.
The reason for that is the Tories. For decades before may, average annual cost of the asylum system was £200-300 million due to a low backlog. It is now over £2 billion.
We must remember that for the vast majority, we're three months away from homelessness but we're never three good months away from being millionaires
@left_blank Housing benefit?
It depends on how many assets you have and your safety net. Capital in terms of money and assets and social capital in terms of family and friends. There is no community in countries like UK everywhere is so individualistic and many people aren't close with their families
Brexit
All this poverty yet corporate profits are through the roof.
We're being screwed.
All the time these tory crooks are in power, they'll continue to squeeze the poor and give more to the wealthy. They took £20.00 a week from tax credits last year and then what did jeremy unt give the wealthy people towards their pensions? £6000 per year, that's £115+ per week. They don't and will not need that money. This government need to be replaced asap. They line their own pockets and real workers are beneath them. They are totally corupt and have no empathy for the poor whatsoever... vote them out.
@@unknown_name_389 No one objects to their making a profit, but they are making record profits. After all, companies should have a sense of social responsibility. Your country provides them with the infrastructure, environment, and workers they need to operate. Companies are basically amoral. They exist simply to make money. So they should be tightly regulated to serve the best interests of society and country.

That became life for many people - beyond what we could ever imagine in their worst nightmares.
This is so sad....Reminds me of when I was on unemployment benefits, and had to stretch $30 a day on food/water/electricity...Ended up living on ricecakes, almond milk and hot chips ($2 a bag) from the local fish 'n' chip shop...Often had to go to a loan store to pawn out jewellery for $50 to $100 in cash...Could literally relate to the song 'Living On A Prayer.' Really hope more people donate to these food banks and that the cost of living goes down soon...

Especially when she said women shouldn’t be on the streets. I volunteer at a soup kitchen in The Netherlands, the abuse of women and young men is horrible. I can’t believe governments allow this to happen. We can do better than this!
Government in the form of DWP will go after pensioners and the poorest among us, but won't to after prolific tax dodgers/evaders
They put like 9 times the funding into working class benefit fraud than chasing the tax dodging/evading.
@left_blank damn you’ve cracked it! Why did it never occur to me before!
@left_blank From someone who has reached state pension age today, and was able to take early retirement years ago, because she has an excellent private pension and paid her mortgage off 20 years ago. What an empathetic little ray of sunshine you are, clearly young, well wakey wakey you will be a pensioner one day. By which time there will be no pensions and you will be on social credit. If you’re referring to the new tune from Sleaford Mods of that title - it says it all!
I watched a man and a woman turn up to a food bank in a brand new range rover and attempt to jump the queue. Myself and the others weren't having it. The 18 people in the queue with me dragged her out along with her husband and chased them back into their 100 grand range rover and they drove off. It sickens me seeing the top 5% in the community treating working people like it's the middle ages. Like serfs. We are sick of toffs running this country. It's 2023. The same year the western world is launching rockets that can land upright, making nano chips to cure muscle neuron diseases. We are eating out of date, cold, second hand food from sheds in the local community center.

Austerity is a choice. No other developed country went down this road in 2010. Homelessness is a choice. Finland is on track to end homelessness in 2027.
Finland is nowhere near the scale of the problems the larger countries face.
The lockdown was a choice .You were warned at the time how disastrous this would be for the economy. And guess what ? It turned about to be an economic disaster with inflation it will take years to bring under control.
@Marvin66 UK and Finland are relatively wealthy developed countries. The point is Finland developed an actionable plan to end homelessness and it's working. The UK has similar resources but lacks the political will, larger population counts for naught if the resources are available. Food banks, low wages, cuts to local services, boarded up high streets, homelessness have been increasing since 2010 when the conservatives came into power long before lockdowns.
Exactly: austerity is a choice. We should stop voting into power those who impose austerity on the rest of us.
Yes lot people are struggling to meet ends in the UK? Low income and middle income are struggling to meet ends so sad?

I'd vote Mick Lynch over any of the Tory liars any day of the week 👌🏻
@@Abitofsanity 100% agree !
Mick for Labour leader 👏
@Abitofsanity
That would guarantee a Labour loss at the election.
Starmer has to attract those that voted for Johnson last time as well as keep Labour voters onboard.
Mick Lynch would get the Corbyn treatment from the media, leading to the same result as 2019.
He supports Brexit and pressured union members to vote for it. So he enabled the current Tory regime.
@Abitofsanity
But Starmer isn't a clone of Sunak.
Only someone pushing Tory propaganda would make such a ludicrous comparison.
So why do you do it ?
Also, your focus on personalities is also the problem.
Last General Election it was Boris Johnson that people voted for but then got Truss and now Sunak.
People voting for Starmer now could also get a different leader if he doesn't do what people want him to do.
The Labour Party is bigger than Starmer and the sooner people grow up and accept that the better for all of us.
You choose not to see the difference between Sunak and Starmer, but Labour doesn't have all the other Tory ERG pushing their agenda.

I've been off from work and uni due to illness for the past 5 months and all I'm getting is £650 from universal credit and that's without me declaring what I'm getting from SAAS. I came to the UK 12 years ago looking for a new life and I got that but now I've been considering just packing up and going back home because things are just so bad. Even my mum, who still grew up under a dictatorship, doesn't remember things ever being this bad. The government is just ruining the country for working-class people and it's just so sad.

I am a 70 year old widow and am able to pay all my bills. My council tax, electricity and water bills have all gone up, Because my husband and I worked hard I have extra income from private pensions. Because I worked hard, I cannot get any help when other pensioners can. I am
penalised for working hard and never ever been on benefits.
I also pay tax, of course some of which pays for others who are less fortunate than myself.
If people are in work struggling to pay bills and buy food what chance does someone on benefit stand?
Or are people wasting their money on booze and tabs?
I manage on what little money I get from the DWP. My electric and gas meters are well topped up. The water rates is paid every week. I have plenty of food in the freezer. My bills are all up to date and paid. I don't waste £50 or more on booze every week. I don't smoke.
I live in the north east. A lot of people smoke here in the north east. That is why people in this region are struggling. Especially when a packet of 20 cigs costs £8 or more, that weekly waste of money mounts up. That is £56 a week wasted on cigarettes. And then there moan they got no money to pay their bills and buy food. Sorry, but I am not buying this crap.
Well done for actually having the guts to say that. People who are genuinely doing everything they can and still struggling, I do feel sorry for. People who are heavy smokers/drinkers and complain about being "skint" all the time get no sympathy from me at all.
I'm the same!.. I'm on universal credit and have a 15 year old. I'm not rich, but I'm not poor either. I don't smoke, drink, go out for meals or buy expensive things. In the Summer I put £100 on my gas/elec so its topped up until Winter. I buy second hand clothes and always look very presentable. My food cupboards are full, I can afford petrol and I live in a beautiful house... so please explain to me how people who are working cannot afford anything!!!... it drives me up the wall.

The whole world is suffering a cost of living crisis with some worse than others however. It wasn’t until I lived and worked overseas that I realised that the uk has been living way beyond her means for decades and now her chickens are coming home to roost. The difference between the haves and the have nots is now bigger than ever.
But the amount of money that governments waste, especially during the pandemic is obscene .Rishi appeared to be very generous at the time I did think about how it was going to bepaid back? @@Tracchofyre The "being happy" part is meant to be sarcastic. People didn't understand what the author of that piece was trying to say.
They say the UK is one of the wealthiest countries in the world, but it has an apaulling track record of looking after our least fortunate. It seems we are happy to send money abroad to help their needy, but invariably never gets to the needy. We are now spending millions per day on helping illegal immigrants settle here when there is homelessness already within these shores, then there’s the question of our beloved NHS being eroded by the lack of staffing simply because the staff cannot live on the income they are paid and this government doesn’t care and has very little interest in preserving it. Then there’s the other essential services ie rail workers, ambulance drivers, teachers the list goes on. So now the countries poorest are having to rely on food banks, beggars belief!!
British people seem to hold on to the idea that their country is still some kind of empire or at least somehow 'special'. The truth is - as much as Brits don't want to hear it - that it's not. The UK is not even one of the wealthiest countries in the world anymore. If we look at GDP per capita, the UK is not even in the top 10. Countries like Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Norway, the Netherlands, Belgium etc. have a much higher standard of living for the average person. The UK is just a poor country with some very, very rich people in it.
@@fridaber6069 it still seems to irritate people abroad the word “empire” as I’ve already pointed out the wealth in our nation is being spread thinly as we are a nation who seem to want to help others, the countries you have mentioned as being far wealthier than the UK don’t have the same record as the Uk at providing help for other nations, hence their ability to provide better services for their people, perhaps it’s time we take on the same stance as they.

@@t47i it’s good to know not all of the north-east voted Conservative in 2019, how County Durham and Cleveland can vote Tory after Thatcher I don’t understand. Never trust a Tory
How many of these people who 'rely' on food banks have top of the range Smart phones, smoke cigarettes, have cars, go to the pub etc.? If you can afford ANY of these you do NOT need a food bank!
Sad , very sad . As to what is going on in our once great country .
The problem is that our current system really has no penalty for being rich and not paying your fair share. Poor people need rich people to attract investors and if you think you're going to be Robin Hood and magically take the wealth from these people, they will simply reroute or leave. This is what history has shown us and more recently, democracy in the West. This is the most heartbreaking thing I've had to realize but this polarizing distribution of wealth is likely to continue because there's no way to rein in the corporations and wealthy.
Its all about Corporate greed and profiteering at the expense of everyone else. And the Government assist them!
Don't be afraid to say NO to P.M's.
If you think situation in tyneside is bad.
Just go down the coast and it gets worse.
I have been on the street, I have cerebral palsy and wheelchair.💗🧑🏻🦼
A Labour MP driving an Audi. Nice, very nice.
Support local shops not big box stores like ASDA etc.
A lot of the troubles were in the making before the consequences appeared. Self inflicted by government policies on excess liquidity in the system, lock down, covid hysteria, can always help others with funds/equipment but not citizens, and sanctions.
Sad 😞
Every cradle is a grave.
parents SHOULD provide basic necessities up to their offspring’s death. it’s the LEAST they could do for putting them on death row. i hate living for the weekend.
But nope because the parents assume their kids owe them something.
Life is essentially a “Death Sentence”. parents will use the excuse of “I changed your diaper for years, fed you, clothed you, bathed you. You need to help me financially.” And they are listing off the bare minimum of parenting and say they need your help with bills and what not when we can barely take care of ourselves in our 20s. Shits crazy
Not all parents presume their kids owe them, but when do kids become adults ? If they can’t survive without the support of mum and dad ? You obviously don’t have kids yourself and with that attitude sounds like you never will.
Agree!
I hope you get the psych help you need.
yes
What has happened to th UK?
It voted Tory
Don't compare your self others ..live with what u have..i know it's hard but v can surely overcome it
The standard of living has always been low in the UK. People working to just pay the bills and never getting ahead. Now thousands can't even pay those bills. UK is a total shit hole. We have a corrupt government and greed from supermarkets, energy and water companies, fuel companies, rail and bus companies. The list is endless
The fact that we have to work means that we are in a severely compromised subjugated position and it's none of our fault, our social position is imposed on us.
Having kids when you aren’t rich is completely illogical and if you don’t have the right genetics you lose the game too.
The summary of "life" is having to fight to get a grueling and enslaving job in order to survive knowing that sooner or later you will die anyway and that it can be at any time. And, if you are a sheep , you will try to breed new human beings who will do exactly the same as you. And, as if that were not enough, we do it without even knowing if life has any meaning or purpose. Only to stay alive one more day to continue suffering and struggling to fulfill the endless needs that we have to continue perpetuating this torment.
The Ugly truth is , without hindsight , nobody have children out of any selfless reason . They do it for themselves , they just want a little pet that they have a heavy biological attraction towards .
Same thing is happening in USA 🇺🇸 if not worse !!!
What the hell is happening
Neo liberalism
Hell on earth and we've see nothing to what the evil bastards have planned for us down the road in 2025 Mr Klaus and Mr gates next scamdemic spars virus so depressing for the future of humanity💯😠😡
13 years of the tory crime syndicate,
Multibillion dollar ghettos. Real state worth trillions but no money for food.
Whoever thought of these policies and got them through parliament was such a genius.
Governments come and go and leave the people to pick up the pieces....all we have is each other.
Any developed country should not need food banks, at most they should be for refugees and such that don't get any support. People living in a social system, many working, should not have to rely on them, it's a shame. We have the same problem in Germany, food banks cover what the state fails to and it's just sad. I myself have been failed by the social net, living way below a liveable income, and I often feed myself from food sharing, meaning leftovers from supermarkets and bakeries that are about to go bad but are given away for free before they do. It helps a lot
Refugees get excellent support.
If you Don't Vote then don't complain.
Force the rich to pay their share of taxes! Make the movement of large amounts of cash to tax havens a crime (tax evasion) and enforce it. Put a sane limit on corporate profits - say 10%. These measures would solve a lot of these problems. The greedy rich and the government supporting the greedy rich is the problem.
#EnoughisEnough #ToriesOut 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬
The real problem is employers not paying a living wage
It’s more than 2mil foodbanks shave been asked too simmer the numbers
How much does it cost to feed 1 average person in the UK these days? How much per week for a healthy balanced diet?
Depends. Where in the UK. Whether you have the means to grow/produce/find your own food and to store it. Probably between £2-5/day for an adult using the supermarket. Shopping would probably be for potatoes, onions, carrots, frozen peas, beans, bread, noodles/pasta, tomato puree and oats. (Some supermarkets have a time when food is reduced by 25-75%.)
Cooking the food is another issue. Could use a pressure cooker to cook down vegetables and reheat small portions in the microwave. You can cook on a wood stove as well (where the cost involves obtaining suitable fuel - effort would be collecting scrap wood and cutting it down to size).
Easy to grow foods are potatoes, beans, radish (tops are edible), beets (tops are very good), onion, winter squash, berries, herbs and mushrooms. Easy to forage foods are nettles, thistles, hazel nuts, blackberries, raspberries, crab apples, pears.
30p a day, according to Tory MP Lee Anderson
@@Redsleather 30p a meal. At 3 meals a day 90p. But for the mp his meals are likely subsidized or fully paid for by the taxpayer.
I reckon I spend £5 per day for food and I eat pretty well for that. I buy base ingredients and do my own cooking, not over priced ready to eat stuff. Probably spend 50p per day for electricity to cook with.
@@hazmat5749 You can eat extremely well for £5/day. I'm more of less self sufficient and live a little far from the town. So food, cooking and heating cost some effort rather than money.
Under normal circumstances very few people should be suffering but the combined living cost increases push some people over the edge (especially those with debts, unstable work, fixed incomes, dependents, renting, no savings and no investments - or indeed with all these things!). The North east has a reputation of poverty even in good times due to the loss of heavy industry.
I live on 50 pounds per week and I live comfortably. Well, I don't pay rent, use my bike for transportation (a bike I found in a rubbish bin which I fixed using parts from other discarded bikes), don't heat my flat, don't go to pubs, don't buy clothes, and I pay less council tax cos my income is low. Still, I have electricity, water, hot water, internet, phones (both mobile and static), and I eat well (buying reduced-to-clear food, not necessarily the food I want to eat that is). I don't go to food banks because I don't think I need it. I can even afford to have a beer or a buckfast once per week! I also travel abroad about once per year (courtesy of Ryanair the airfare is about 45 pounds in both directions).
I have a lot of spare time (as I work for up to 15 hours per week) which I put to good use and I sleep for 9 hours every night. My life is boring but easy.
Is it possible to live on 30 pounds? Yes, but it is not comfortable. I've done it. It is more like survival though. Still, even such a lifestyle is better than that of most working people in China, India, or Africa. Bottom line: life in UK is good. It is a pitty that most Brits don't appreciate how good it is.
You are absolutely right.
