    Kodo is a very famous taiko (japanese drumming) group and definitely have their own style of playing, but technically that style is called kumidaiko.

    I rarely like tabla mixed with non-Indian percussion. Usually it's just treated as a tonal effect, or maybe some fast, free rhythm runs.
    But this was excellent interplay. Both of them were on common ground and it was very compelling.

    It looks like the Kodo drum uses a Neumann SM69 stereo microphone and the tabla uses a Shure 57. It sounds great.
    I never heard the Kodo drummer hit the mic.

    It can't be improv - they're doing too much in sync without establishing a pattern... It's impossible unless they're using ESP... Amazing at any rate. Zakir = legend.

    A 19 year old from a country not even have a history of 900 year is commenting on a classical music tradition that is more than 3000 years old. Now that is interesting... you have anything more to say? I am really enjoying your comments.

    anyone who likes this check out album by Ravi Shankar and Phillip Glass...true East meets West...Ravi composes Indian music themes and Philip composes his own interpretation of each theme...and Phil writes minimalist classical themes and Ravi composes an Indian influenced/Sitar/Tabla piece around the minimalist theme...4 each,so 8 songs...called "Passages"....EASILY THE MOST BEAUTIFUL MEDITATIVE CD'S I HAVE EVER HEARD,AND I PLAY AND LISTEN TO EVERYTHING,FROM M.DAVIS/PANTERA/BACH/PACO DE LUCIA

    This is a fine example of cross-cultural percussion, with the Tabla (the standard Hindu hand drums) contrasted with a Nagadōdaiko (a Japanese barrel-drum with full-grain animal-hide heads).

  • @leomcculloch
    @leomcculloch 16 років тому

    I think there are certainly parts that were rehearsed or known before the performance. Most of zakir's playing was not exact part-playing though, for sure. I wonder how much of the japanese drumming heard here is traditional japanese music. I don't know what japanese traditional music sounds like, but that sounded very swing-band like in rhythm. Only problem is the bayan (bass tabla) is drowned out by the taiko.

    Interesting, thanks. Few people appreciate instruments on their true level unless they actually play the instrument. I think for people who have a well-developed musical palate, the tabla is easy to appreciate. The skill required to play it is impressive and it seems to fit well with a diverse range of instruments (for example, Zakir's recent recording with Bela Fleck), and it's an engaging solo instrument. I admit that the Japanese drum adds a low dynamic and power that the tabla cannot match.

    Well Marjorie, dans la langue de Bourvil je te réponds : je n'ai insulté personne, je me suis simplement fendu d'un retour en accord avec ma pensée. Et je persiste, le monde est suffisamment rempli d'ersatz d'artistes (très en vogue depuis l'émergence du Net) pour qu'un génie tel Hussain ne se cantonne pas à cela. Pour synthétiser ma pensée, ce post est idéal pour un UA-camur lambda, en aucun cas satisfaisant lorsqu'on est soi-même percussionniste...
    Chacun mes goûts quoi !
