I had the privilege of meeting Pandit ji in person. So humble and down to earth. A concert ended at 2.30AM but the people were so mesmerized that nobody got up from their seats. After 5 mins he asked organizers to start again and it went on till 4AM. Literally the divine experience..

One of the first classical music performances I ever saw was Pandit Shivkumar Sharma performing with Ustad Alla Rakha (Zakir Hussain's father) when I was about 7 years old... And even then I was astounded by the musicianship on display. Pt Shivkumar Sharma was indeed a legend. May his soul rest in peace.

Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma - Santoor
    Ustad Zakir Hussain - Tabla
    Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia - Flute

When the masters of this caliber perform together, they transcend the worldly atmosphere to a much higher level. These masters also take the audience to that level. It starts in a slow tempo and gradually it rises to a level one looses the sense of time, place and everything. You don’t want it to end and when it does, it leaves you with an indescribable feeling.

There were more legends of the 20th century in India who were in the superlative to Ustaad Zakir Hussain. Some of them are Pandit Kishan Maharaj on the tabla, Pandit Kumar Gandharv (Hindustani vocal), Ustaad Badey Ghulam Ali Khan (Hindustani vocal), Smt. Kishori Amonkar (Hindustani classical vocal), Pandit Mallikarjun Mansur, Pandit Basavaraja Rajguru, Sawai Gandharv, Ustaads Daagar brothers....(all Hindustani classical vocal).....in South India....M.L. Vasantha Kumari, d.k.pattammaal, G.N.Balasubramaniam, Madurai Mani Iyer, Ariyakkudi Ramanuja Iyengar, M.D.Ramanathan, Chembai Vaidyanatha Bhagavathar, Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer....all Carnatic vocalists and more than legends, on the percussion instruments from South India, Palani Subramanian Pillai, Palakkad Mani Iyer on the mrudangam, T.R.Mahalingam on the flute, Balachander on the Veena...... The list is endless. The point i wanted to make is you have only experience a droplet of India's Ocean of legends. There is plenty more..... Each better than the other

I have been witness to this heaven twice, in my life! Once in April 1997, at Ravindranath Theatre Indore, and second time, at Shanmukhananda Hall, Mumbai and both times, it was pure heaven. These two stalwarts have their souls entwined with the raga on the play...oh God. It's always beyond words. Every times, whenever these two artists performed, Ustad Zakir Husaain would bow down and touch Pandit ji's feet, at the end and seek his blessings. How humble, how venerable. Their performance always carried the purity of a prayer!! We have lost one of these legends! May God bless the soul of Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma's soul to eternity!

I attended a concert in Mumbai with Shiv-ji and Zakir sahab - and it was Shiv-ji's 74th birthday that day! And he lovingly said, I am only 47, not 74! And they created magic that day too. In fact, every time I watched them live - they have the ability to get you transfixed and transported at the same time. It is rare to be in the moment and to be sent to a different world, and these masters can do that. Keep playing those strings from up there Shiv-ji!! "Water" is the first album that introduced me to your work, and since then I have been a follower!

No substance can match the intoxication that Indian classical music in its full glory can provide... Just freakin divine these two maestros.
I would love to point out that every time we use words like 'talent' without using words like 'hardship' ... We do a disservice to the legends. Talent alone is of no significance here. Ustad ji in his younger days would lock himself in a room... light a long candle and play all kinds of stuff until it burnt out. This was a daily routine. That's not practice.. that's worship of the highest order.

It’s a point of sadhana (making mind a tool), where they know so much of the theory that, every intricacy becomes a subconscious memory. They don’t learn the art, they train their mind to align with the art form. The involved senses hence align so fast with the mind as well as the specific muscles and nerves that, the actions precede the sensory processing. The fingers have their own set or brains if I have to take a biological aspect. We call that Yog Sadhana here , where your mind and body is one and you have full control over both. This is not possible with learning (it plays a big role in paving the way though). It’s purey sadhana. We all have oftentimes grasped it unconsciously, where we react correctly even before understanding a thing. What makes them special is not a different talent but the mastery over that same talent, which they can attain consciously and consistently.

These instruments combine so well that they fuse into a performance on the neurons.

I don't know what to say. At one stage you stopped shaking your head and felt tired. But they continued tiredless. The climax was so awesome.

Korbin seemed to be moved to tears mid-performance. They’re amazing isn’t it..
