    The old video on the siege of Rhodes is what got me hooked on this channel, so happy to see it again.
    Also this siege really shows the ingenuity of Demetrios. Even though he ultimately did not succeed, he deserved the name Poliorketes.

    • @praiza1481
      @praiza1481 Місяць тому +1

      Well given a few more months he probably would have defeated the Rhodians. Also, this is really one of the most harduous thing to do in ancient warfare, besieging a large city and actually winning. It took months to Alexander to capture Halicarnassus and Tyre, and Rhodes was far larger than both. It truly was a monumental enterprise, and only the daring mind of Demetrios could entertain the idea and then actually do it.

    • @iexist3919
      @iexist3919 Місяць тому +1

      @@praiza1481had the coalition not supplied Rhodes, the city certainly would have fallen. Also Demetrios gets far less credit than he deserves. Being able to recover from the disaster at Ipsos to become the king of the Makedonians is still mind blowing to me. Because of him, it was the Antigonid dynasty, not the Antipatrids, that would rule Makedon.

      The Rhodians were badass. I forget which one but their last fight as an autonomous polity was against either Brutus or Cassius, and it was pretty impressive seeing as they were a shadow of their former strength and yet still able to muster resistance against the Romans.

I like to tell people who claim that Alexander received an army from his father and ows most of its success to Philip, that Demetrios also inherited several armies from his father but boy did he dropped the ball.

    0:23 , When you say ''crown himself king'' and then you refer to the rest doing the same. You mean king of what, exactly? King as of the region they were in, or King of Kings, as in King of the whole empire? Or maybe something else?
    I believe this needs a clarification.
    Edit: What is going on at 15:01 ? A sudden cut happens and then a marker that was not there disappears from the city of Sidon.

    Wow what a coincidence, I just obtained a tetradrachm of Demetrius Poliorcetes a couple days ago. Cool to see my fbi agents giving my information to the algorithm for me to see this video! Thanks!

    9:25 Athenian tried to negotiate with Demetrius, but then turned around and killed his messenger? If this was a ruse by Athenians to lure Demetrius, I would think they would have bigger fish in mind than the killing of one messenger....

      The diadochi kindgoms were at their golden age up until 200bc so they still have 100 years of advance before getting weakend and finally conquered at 100bc-50bc

    Still waiting for the video about french conquest of Madagascar. Madagaskar natives are dark skinned or light-skinned and don't look like africans. They are mixed austronesian and especially the merinas.

    Had Antignous given little more time to Demetrios the Rhodes would have surely fallen to him. It was so close the victory was on the verge Rhodes would have become another Tyre.

      It wasn't worth it because he lost allot of troops. It would have been a victory but with major losses. Thats why he accepted the terms.

      that siege took place in 1522. This video is about the Hellenic world around 300BC, way before Turks got there.
