Neewer 48v Phantom Power Supply Test and Review

  • So i got my hands on the Neewer 48v Phantom Power Supply. Its a budget power supply usually expected to power Neewers budget lineup of microphones. I decided to pair this 48v phantom power supply for condenser microphones with a pro level microphone and the results were surprising, but not too much

    Let me know what kind of audio interface you are using. And if you are using one of these budget phantom power supplies, tell me your experience

      Hey so I got the complete set from amazon for 35 euro or so with a bit of a shipping fee and here is my experience with the mic:
      At first It had the utmost minimal sound then I amped the sound using all sorts of metods online but when it got higher there was this giant hiss so you need to go in your options of the realtech or sounds record and turn on noise suppression and then for recording it says bream forming as well it makes it way better but then there was the little hiss which you can get rid of either the way you did in your video or try connecting it to the back directly it stopped all static hissing and such things but now as for the quality of the mic it is good but I don't know how to set up my utmost best quality for the recordings as I work for a guy and make his recordings and I can't seem to make it sound more clean if anyone can help me with that it would be awesome hope this info helps out everyone also forgot to say I installed coble and voicemeeter drivers that are for free tried tweeking with it but didnt manage to make my mic sound any better hope I figure it out or someone helps me here!

      Hi, I used for 10 years a budget Phantom PS and had no problem, until recently (it fell and overheated, my fault ^^). BUT i used a sound card (budget XLR-to-USB). To be clear : sound was perfect (T.bone SC400 microphone).
      The problem with your video is that we don't know if the hissing is due to the PS or the PC sound card (which usually are not good). An interesting test would be to use the same sound card. e.g. a mixing table with on/off 48V, and test it first with mixing table PS ON (and no Neewer PS), and then with with mixing table PS OFF and Neewer PS.

    For $10 more you could get the um2 which is an audio interface that offers +48v. I suggest that’s what people do if they’re on a super tight budget and want to go the XLR route.

    • @LoKnows
      @LoKnows  6 років тому +14

      Man i hope so, anything would have to be better then this thing. Didnt you just review that?

    • @Podcastage
      @Podcastage 6 років тому +6

      Lo Knows, Sort Of the um2 was one of my earlier reviews. It’s not a good video at all but it’s still a decent device then for $10 you could do the umc22 or the 302usb. There’s so many better options for a marginally higher price that I avoid these things like the plague.

      Only reason to get this is if you grab it in a bundle I got the nw-800 nw-700 as the whole kit goes for like 36-39.99 but your probably better off just buying the um2

    Great video! This was found in such perfect timing as I just got in the mail this exact Phantom power Neewer item.
    So your 4/10 rating was partially because it's a lowbudget phantom power connected to a pro level mic & the slight editing of noise reduction. . sounded good to me, but prob different to your advanced ears.
    I paid grand total $40 for mine. Came with XLR cable, ac power outlet cable.
    So here's my set up (mind you, I am VERY new to this videocast/podcast world and am learning everything from various YT channels/reviews online):
    *TonorBM700 condensor mic
    (which seems to be identical to a neewer BM700 or BM800 mic. I think they're all the same just with different model names. )
    This was a kit that came with boom stand, pop filter, XLR cable with 3.5mm cable .
    *3.5mm hooked up to a Sabrent USB soundcard, straight into laptop ( no big desktop computer)
    I'm using Audacity.
    PC, no Mac.
    Recorded a few sample tracks - sounded really low and underpowered.
    Reasons why I went with the Neewer phantompower.
    Now sounds much more bolder.
    Hoping I can get far with this ultra basic noob setup without breaking the bank.
    Thanks for the video!

    • @LoKnows
      @LoKnows  6 років тому +1

      Hellthrasher it’s very workable, especially if you are new to audio or creating content. But like you said, compared to higher end devices there is a huge difference. But you will hear th difference over time. And you will be glad you can now tell the difference. It will only help you over time. Good luck!!

    my phantom power was sorta kinda included in my neewer mic set, I had his once but that's because I had the mic sitting wrong, I wasn't talking into the sides, I was talking into the top of it so I sounded far away which lead to some hiss, with the mic setup properly ( after roughly 15 tests just by talking I had no hiss, everything sounds better when you use the rock EQ in audacity and noise reduction wasn't required, these videos are fairly helpful ( whenever they pop up in my feed).

    I was wondering if it is possible to connect the output of the phantom power supply to an audio interface ? So, the mic goes into the power supply, then the output of the power supply goes into the audio interface, then the output of the audio interface goes into your PC.

    The most crazy thing is that at the Moment a Set with Microphone + Microphone Arm + this Power Supply + Pop Filter + Cables can be bought for 18$... that is so insanely cheap that i had to buy it and try it out, even though i already have some very solid Audio Equipment. But if that really works well for this price its something unbeatable

    A few questions: First-I'm going to record an audiobook, so, I need a professional sound. 1. I currently have a Yeti Snowball, and my voice sounds thick, so, will I only need a mixer to improve my voice? 2. If I don't need a mixer, will an XLR/USB cable work on the Phantom? (I'll purchase a better microphone)

    I'm a bit lost right now because this seems like it should be very simple to setup. Plug three things in the right way and bam.
    I'm using a BM-800 with this product though and it just doesn't appear to work. Like at all.
    I plug the microphone via XLR into the box's input. I plug an XLR-to-3.5 jack into the output and the back of my computer.
    I plug the power supply into the wall and then into the box.
    The blue light comes on.
    I setup the windows audio and its aware that I have *something* plugged into the back.
    But when I test with Audacity, Discord and some other programs it just can't detect audio. Nothing is coming through.

      48v phantom power is just the standard on most mixers. Every condenser microphone I have used will actually operate on as little as 5v, though some lose a bit of gain below 12-15 volts. I have used the Neewer power supply with a 5v usb battery power source with an adapter cable and several mics with no problems.

    If I understood correctly, you talked about 50Hz hiss. Let me tell you that 60Hz (America) or 50Hz (50Hz) is called hum This issue is generally corrected by better cabling or shielding. So it can be generally corrected. But what we generally call hiss is noise generated by electronic itself and cannot be corrected. It can only worked around with proper EQ but this is NOT a good solution. No matter how good is your processing software, anyhow this will affect sound quality.

    I am using BM 800 microphone with V8 Sound Card. It sounds good. But when I connected my microphone to phantom power which is connected to sound card, the sound gets bad.

    What is the difference with and without a power supply?

    Can you connect to an analog mixer that doesn’t support 48v

    i know this is old, but the issue is the pc soundcard, you have to use an external, usb soundcard or an usb sound mixer. integrated pc soundcards are useless for recording, too much noise, even tho most modern motherboards, specially high end, have isolated soundcard on the motherboard, still gets loads of noise comprared to a decent usb soundcard

      I just bought one on amazon and realized its the XLR so now I'm browsing phantom power supps for usb to computer because i totally got the wrong one on accident. Wondering the same thing @Lo Knows Tech

    That hiss comes from your soundcard. This phantom power supply is meant for mixers/camcorders with good preamps that cannot provide 48V for powered mics.

      I’ll test it out but 90% of the people who get this wont have a mixer and if you have a mixer 100% of them won’t need this. So In the end, your stuck with your sound card.

      I personally would use this as a way to use say a cloudlifter with a condenser microphone

    • @LoKnows
      @LoKnows  6 років тому

      darkmew64 oh no, please stop. Let me help you. Cloudlifters are for dynamic microphones not condensor mics. Cloudlifters don’t power condensor mics they just increase the gain of the signal.

    • @darkmew64
      @darkmew64 6 років тому

      Actually I'm just giving you an extreme case. You could use cloudlifter with a condenser mic if the mic is already powered by an external phantom power supply.
