The artwork on the cover all comes from the James Blish novelizations of the episodes. You could do an entire hour long video on those alone, especially their rather unique reimagining in the late 60s and early 70s of the Enterprise.
The cover for Star Trek 10 is interesting because the Enterprise and Klingon D7 battlecruiser are actually very accurate in their proportions and general details, but each ship is given the weird, chonky hull plating that would be perfectly at home on a Star Wars ship. And yet the cover for Star Trek 10 was done three years before Star Wars came out!
The point of the wooden portrayal of Spock in the early part of The Motion Picture was intentional. Remember the scene in Sickbay right after he ventured out to mind-meld with V'Ger. The mind-meld has taught him that the pursuit of pure logic ("Kolinahr") is not for him. "Jim... This... simple feeling is beyond V'ger's comprehension."
This is a pivotal moment in the development of the character and it lasts through the rest of his appearances.
I have this book! I read it at the time. Young Trek fans will enjoy learning about this period of Trek fandom (including the descriptions of the set visits).
I picked that and all the other pre-Pocketbooks Star Trek books up at some used bookstores in the late ‘70s when I was a kid. I haven’t read it since then but I was surprised I remembered some details as you reviewed the book.
Personally I like the older books much better than the Pocketbooks versions because there was more consistency and quality control because they had to get Gene Roddenberry’s approval which led to some editing especially with the Pocketbooks versions in the beginning until he was getting swamped and could no longer proofread them.
After that I noticed a trend where the consistency and quality control dropped in favor of mass production and some time in the early ‘90s I had finally had enough and got out of that rat race of trying to keep up with those books and focus on my job and family as well; it was fun while it lasted.
I didn't have this one back in the day. I grew up on the Isle of Wight in the UK and our US import fiction was a bit hit and miss. Having said that I was able to get all of the James Blish collections and The Making of Star Trek.
I picked this one up a few years ago. A great snapshot into the time period!

I was 7 when Star Trek came out so I was just hit with all the discovery at once. My favorite character, hands down, has always been the beautiful Enterprise.
