  • Dave Thompson teaches in an integrated primary school in south east Belfast. He also has an interest in song writing, and is probably the only person to have played at both Clonard monastery and an Orange Order event, inside a few months of each other.
    In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

    Great talk. I think I’m the only person on the island of Guernsey currently barefoot running. I’m 2 years in to it and a lot slower, but injury free. I’m doing a half marathon in three weeks. Hope ur still at it. 👍

      The half went well. Yep still at it. Been barefoot now for for about 4 years and still loving it 👣👍😄

      Way to go bro. It's amazing being a barefoot runner. Keep it up. That's a great distance to run barefoot 👍🏼🦶🏽

    Some wonderful thinking at the end contrasting complicated, technology dependent approaches to "fitness" with simpler approaches that tend to require less "stuff" for participation or training. What I think I have learned after several decades of training in everything from football, to hard military service, to Olympic weightlifting, to running, to mountaneering, is that if we can competently run, swim, climb, pick up and carry reasonable loads for reasonable distances, and get on and off the ground efficiently, we get just as "fit" as we'd ever want to be, for most anything we'd ever care to do in life, and do it in less time, enjoy the training more, and have less aches, pains and injuries. And minimalist running is indeed a joy.

    It's kind of sad you have to explain your audience how running barefoot is like. In the next century you'll have to explain them how chewing food is like.

    I’m 56 years of age ran since the 90’s have constantly cycled into periods of good hard running reaching good levels of fitness running in trainers heel sticking then getting injured and having 6-8 weeks off. Now trying barefoot and proper form with trainers. Circling the heel like a cyclist peddling with my heel almost hitting my behind and landing mid to forefoot body is stacked in a straight line, no over striding. Problem being now it kills my knees 😩

    • @markwitzmann8187
      @markwitzmann8187 2 роки тому

      Lift your heels off the ground but don't left them touch your behind. There are knee strengthening exercises you can do for barefoot running. If you go onto you tube and type in" barefoot running exercises" you will see the first post from a personal trainer. Do those exercises. You'll be sorted. I run barefoot in mountains. I'm 53 and I have hip arthritis ( this occurred way before running). Since I started barefoot running my hip has been better. But I do not run far. Between 5 to 7 km at present. Build slowly. Most barefoot runners report their injuries have gone.

    Excellent anti-consumerist conclusion.

    Barefoot running if done correctly and built up slowly is the way to go. If you run in shoes 👟 get zero drop with a wide toe box. You don't need thick chunky shoes. The science is out there. Forefoot striking is the only way. Barefoot running allows this to happen easily

      Nobody is censoring you. If you can't understand what he says, learn English. It's one of the easiest languages a native Spanish-speaker can possibly learn.

      Not silly at all. Barefoot shoes are often not appropriate in certain settings. It's more difficult and expensive to find proper shoes for certain scenarios. When you need to dress nice or look formal for example.

      Why? If he was talking about scuba diving would you expect him to be wearing wetsuit, Google’s, snorkel and flippers?

    That isn't Dave Thompson!!!! 😡😡😡😠
    The REAL "Dave Thompson" is a stand-up comedian and played Tinky Winky in the Teletubbies.
    Who TF is this guy????
    He is neither funny nor adorable, he sounds like FKN Ian Paisley, I'm half expecting him to say "NO COMPROMISE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
    NO SURRENDER!!!!!!!!!'

    Or here’s just a thought how about learning how to run with proper form to begin with lol you do not need to barefoot run lol

    • @thechangingman3763
      @thechangingman3763 6 років тому +6

      Because when you run barefoot you have to run differently, this can’t be replicated wearing running shoes, even minimalist shoes cause you to run differently.

    • @jasonphillips3796
      @jasonphillips3796 6 років тому +1

      That is false! Lol with proper training, and form drills you can run with the same form with either trainers or bare feet... I do both the reason trainer get a bad rap is b/c over weight ppl want to train crazy hard and heel strike without taking proper measures before being a training program... if that same over weight person started barefoot running they would also get hurt

    • @thechangingman3763
      @thechangingman3763 6 років тому +6

      Jason Phillips no ones saying you can’t get hurt running barefoot.
      If anything it leaves you prone to a different set of injuries if your not careful.
      I also run both barefoot and in minimalist shoes and for 20yrs ran in non minimalist shoes.
      I’ve never been a heel striker but then I learnt to run as a teenager before the over stylised modern running shoes came along.
      The point is between bare feet/minimalist and non minimisation shoes there is a difference in feel which leads you to run slightly differently.
      To suggest you can run exactly the same in barefoot as in any type of shoe is like suggesting you run exactly the same whether your running in deep snow, on concrete, uphill or down hill.
      You adapt your running style to each individual surface.
      Shoes are just an artificial surface you strap to your feet so naturally you will adapt to a slightly different running style in each.
      A good runner with good form will run with good form in all three, a bad runner with bad form will run badly in all three but you will shift your weight in different ways in each.
      Horses for courses! Personally I don’t care what someone chooses to run in, I switch between all three depending on the running surface and how familiar I am with the route I’m running but each to their own.
