    Something like this would make a good smart home in-wall display. With decent in-wall speakers and the backup camera connected to a camera covering your front door, it would be better than the usual mounting an android tablet to your wall. Plus the connections are on the back so the wiring would be hidden.

    Picking a android headunit really depends on your expectations & use. If your going to interact with it a lot and utilize many of the features spending the extra money is definitely worth it. For me my purpose was bluetooth, backup camera and the ability to listen to my music collection from a usb drive. I never really connect it to the internet, android auto works fine w/ pandora & maps. It is 1gb ram and 16gb storage which I would not recommend but again for me its a media player w/ the media built it so the specs aren't an issue.

    It's posts like this that strengthen my resolve to get an ITX-compatible double-DIN chassis to put a Seeed Odyssey or similar into. You can get adapters that allow the computer to read CANBUS messages from steering wheel controls, a great selection of GPS pucks to choose from, and built-in wireless which won't be restricted to 2.5G speeds. Couple that with BT for mini keyboards with touchpads, and that's a winning combo.

      Correct if you have a stock sound system these are.... Ok at best. If on the other hand you have a factory upgraded sound system with amps and subs, or even worse a custom setup, these typically output a trash signal for your amps, which in turn boost the already garbage signal to your nice/expensive woofers/tweeters. Tablet functionally they're fine. It's the AUDIO side why it's $150 headunit and not $400-$500 headunit.

    I'd be interested to see how this holds up more long term. That's always my fear with these products and the heat I have in my state. Car manufacturers spend hundreds of thousands testing internal electronics and screens to be sure they can hold up to the extremes of vehicle vibration/heat and I have a feeling these manufacturers do not. Even with the investment, some OEMs have faults like the Tesla screen issue or bmw/Lexus screen issues come to mind in recent history.

      Well for what it's worth, I've had an even older Android radio from out of China I installed into my blazer four years ago and it worked surprisingly well in the high humid heat of KY. In winter though when it got really cold, around 20 degrees or lower the screen capacitive touch was very finicky until the heater got temps back up. But the apps themselves worked just fine.
      I finally updated the radio simply because the only real downfall to many of these is getting updates on these is almost non existent unless you get one from a very well known company that is known to support their android radios with software/firmware updates and they usually cost a bit more for it.
      I don't think car manufacturers themselves are testing it like you say unless they are making the devices in house. But whoever the manufacturer is for the device before it reaches the car manufacturer indeed has prior and I can almost guarantee that most of your factory radios is made of parts from China too. 🤷

    If you can get a double-din dash panel I used a KKmoon K5980 in my old Jeep and Android Auto worked wonders. The only thing to be aware of is the length of the USB cable;
    The stock cable from the head unit is about 6 feet, which is great if you need it to reach the side of the dash but if you're putting it closer I would suggest shortening the cable if you can, or limit the amount of extensions/adapters used.
    I had my stock cable plugged into a short 6-inch panel mount extension so it would look clean. But, that limited me to only being able to use USB cables 12" or under. It ended up not being a problem for me as there was a pocket to store my phone right there, but it is something to be aware of.

      this is the ticket if you care about audio quality and you want speed and you just want to have everything just work you even get Bluetooth audio controls such as volume and of course music navigation.
      some of the Samsung tablets actually support HDMI like my Samsung Tab 3 20s and I've used the HDMI output for a lot of cool things in my car.
      I've used a redmi 9 C to a USB dock to a topping AD-10 and the sound quality and of course everything else is just dead silence there's literally no Distortion from the topping DAC and it's just over the top wonderful!
      an outboard DSP that takes USB input is simply the way to go if you are using Amazon HD. Download all the songs from Amazon to a SD Card, and its Heaven!
      the most expensive part of your system is usually the speakers the installation and of course the DSP but the amplification part that's as cheap as peanuts as you can get a great performance dual amplifier for less than $109 and it has the specs that literally trounces on just about everything out there on the market.

The preloaded map navigation works great and is very fast. SOUND QUALITY IS SUPERB WITH MY EPICENTER AND ORION HCCA AMPS. I WILL NEVER USE ANYTHING LESS THAN ANDROID CAR STEREO . P.S. • @UberStarFkr
      @UberStarFkr 3 роки тому +1

      I suppose depends on the vehicle for my preference. Though I do like double din when it comes to these style radios. My Blazer had the odd craptastic 1.5 din which I converted to a proper double din.

    • @UberStarFkr
      @UberStarFkr 3 роки тому +1

      @@DailyCorvid I'm only good if the opportunity exists lol. For the Blazer it's odd. They came factory with 1.5 din radios so you had to have an adapter to replace a 1din radio in. But the space for the radio itself is actually closer to 2din. The issue in my case was there is a plastic piece that is used as a support for the back of the factory radio that had to be cut down and just a few cm cut around the edges. This is with the trim taken off mind you.
      The trim piece though that goes over the radio though is 1.5din. The trick to that? Find the same color trim from a Bravada lol. They essentially were the step child of the Blazer using a lot of the same parts and color interiors except they came factory with 2din radios meaning their trim that also fit Blazers, also gave Blazer the proper 2din factory look.
      I wouldn't say I'm a professional or anything, far from it. I just like to tinker with things and if I can make something work and have it look like its supposed to be there, I'll do it 😊.
      Edit to add further reply:
      And indeed these radios could be used in different ways like you suggest for a bathroom wall. Simply need a 12V DC power source which wouldn't be hard at all to obtain.

    Put one in my 1996 Plymouth Voyager (factory radio failed), 1964 Valiant, and 1965 Dart with backup camera in all ($100 total). Doesn't seem powerful enough to run Android Auto, at least I haven't been able to load it, even with "Head Unit Reloaded" app. But Phone-Mirror is supposed to work (haven't tried). For GPS, it seems you need a wireless connection to download your current location. Other than for a radio, for me it is best to put the smart phone screen on the dash, especially for GPS. I used it in my 1960's cars because standard DIN radios won't fit without hacking a big hole in the metal dash. This box is thin enough to not stick out far from the dash and required not molesting the dash (just ran bolts thru the radio knob cutouts to secure the mounting plates.

TBH Android Auto works a lot better on this than it does on our 2021 Skoda!

Get long lcd ribbon cable, install the screen on the dash and connect it neatly the motherboard with that long ribbon stashed somewhere under the dash. Is it feasible at all? My unit needs a $100 DVD from the dealer to upgrade maps, and because of where I live I can never get accurate results because it is spread across 3 regions that load up separately. Plenty of older cars had the HU on the lower side of the dashboard, near the gear lever. Now while it's not much an issue for tactile style HU, having what is practically a tablet in such position will take away your view on the road (not to mention having to fiddle around with settings, changing radio stations, etc) and simply taking your eyes away for a split second while doing highway speed is very dangerous.
    So for these kinda car with HU on the lower side, just get a quality 1DIN HU with Bluetooth function

The power on / off button is unresponsive until it's tapped about 10-15 times, same goes with the volume icons. I paid just under £100 so don't know if the problem is that it's cheap and unreliable, or if it has a problem with responding, calibrating the screen didn't work so going to do the factory reset to try and resolve it.
