Listen I've been prepping for decades now i have used the boxed milks and broth years after the best buy date and they are fine. I never go by best buy dates anymore we have never gotten sick from anything I've ever used. Smell and taste are your best friends. My husband and I just checked our buckets this weekend they were all good. I have a whole room pantry and it does become a lot at times. Section by section is how i check it plus I make it a point to be in that pantry room everyday sometimes several times a day. I think they are fine

I'm eating tomatoes that dated out in April 2022. They're fine as long as the can isn't bulging or rusted thru. When you open them, you'll know if they're bad.

Don’t feel bad. We all have done this as we learn about keeping a pantry. It teaches us what we use and what we don’t.
The tomato products start tasting like metal the longer they stay… myself I’d toss them.
The rest I’d do the smell test.
    Good job!

We’re still eating jam that we canned 8 years ago. Nothing wrong with it. I go by look and smell first, then taste a tiny bit of stuff that is past the best buy date. Bulging, leaking or badly rusted cans are tossed, of course, without opening. Dented cans are always used first. Sometimes it’s hard to buy canned food that isn’t “pre-dented”. I swear the stock people where we shop use the cases of canned goods, crackers and chips as footballs.

I've heard other preppers say they've used the box milk for a year or more over the bbd. And I believe soy sauce last almost forever unopened. Great reminder to go through our Preps. Something I need to do again soon. Take care and God bless

i freeze my parmesan cheese. One important thing to do is to take the short amount of time it takes each time you add to the pantry, don't just bring it down and set it with the intention of doing it later, it gets overwhelming fast.

Thank you for the motivation. I have to go through and toss too 😢. I am so overwhelmed

We've all been there & it's a bummer! This is what I've learned... canned goods keep for literally years after BB date.. UNLESS its acidic.. tomatoes & pineapple...the acid in them eats away at the can... the concern used to be the BPA linings in cans...but if not lined the acid'll eat away at the actual can.. I don't use over about 9mo on the dates for those 2 things...if its spaghetti sauce in a GLASS jar..I've used 4yrs past date w no problem.. Ive got a shelf in my pantry that's ONLY 'expired' stuff & i'll usually plan at least 1 meal a week to use up some stuff.. fun fact.. I opened a can of peas with a '17 date & a can of '25 side by side... couldn't tell which was which by looking...they were identical. Also, rotation is KEY..put the newer '24 in the back & the older in the front so it gets used up... that alone has helped me a ton in managing my overstock & I use the sniff test. we've had some interesting meals over the yrs but never got sick. Lol. Good video!

According to the USDA website, as long as it is stored properly, canned food will last indefinitely. It will eventually lose some nutritional value and the texture may change (mushy), but it is safe to eat. As always, if something looks, smells or tastes "off", or if the can seals are bulging or if the cans are leaking or rusty, toss them. You are throwong out some food that is still edible.😢

Staying organized can be a daunting challenge. Best use by dates are supposed to be the last day the product is still at its peak flavor, but the product is still good for years after that. However some companies are setting date even shorter to get people to throw out good food and buy more. Some of the food my mom canned were still good ten years later. and they say home canned food doesn't last as long as commercial canned food, go figure.

From the USDA website article “Before You Toss Food, Wait”: Most shelf-stable foods are safe indefinitely. In fact, canned goods will last for years, as long as the can itself is in good condition (no rust, dents, or swelling). Packaged foods (cereal, pasta, cookies) will be safe past the ‘best by’ date, although they may eventually become stale or develop an off flavor. You’ll know when you open the package if the food has lost quality. Many dates on foods refer to quality, not safety.

That canned food should be find as long as they are not bulging, rusting , and if the tops and bottoms move freely toss them!
I used a can of rotel tomatoes that had a best if used by date of 2017! They were fine!
And to be honest i am finding myself talking to your video telling you all that spaghetti sauce is fine!
Also, I would hate used those tomatoes to make up some salsa!

Not "advice" but I go "shopping" in the basement. I try to keep the oldest stuff close (basement kitchen cabinets)- I just used a canned coconut cream exp 2021 and it was fine. We eat 3 year old pasta- it's fine. Only thing I have had to feed to the chickens are cheese doodles/goldfish crackers/chips because the oils in them get gross and taste bad (if they are a year exp or more- a lot of stuff u have i would eat. Ive used unsweetened shelf stable almond milk that is a year expired. Just start cooking and use it. Ive eaten 2017 dated canned vegetables like halfway through 2023. Tasted a little metallic though.

Also- my mom ate expired garlic aoli sauce BUT the top was popped up- my dad said dont eat it- she ate it- had the runs for a day- so if the top is popped up dont eat it.

My husband cooks all the time and said he uses the diced tomatoes that expired 2021-2022 all the time to cook as long as they look good smell good- he said they were nice and bright and looked fine- he cooked with them last week. He said the only thing that he's more weary of is that meat gravy- anything with meat in it be more careful of

I'm currently using olive oil with a "Best By" date of Nov 2022 & it's still good.

Hi, Mary. I think all of us have gone through the phase of buying too much and being stuck with items we don't use (or like). Unless you see damage or (like the cheese) a change in color, the product is good well past the "best by" date. 99% of your items are fine. They just very slowly start to lose their nutritional peak. But that happens slowly. It's okay to prune your pantry and share extras with your food banks. Some won't accept past the "best by" date. Others will go past a few months. Just a thought: maybe don't buy anything more for the pantry for a few months and eat down what's on your shelves. That way you can shop for fall and winter later on. ☺

BTW, I am eating through some canned veggies, including tomato 🍅 products from 2021 and doing fine!

Ive eaten canned tomatoes dated from 2022 recently- just make sure your cans arent banged up. Maybe stock up on more feminine products/freeze dried stuff. Try to revisit your stash more often- we've all been there- no hate here.

Keep tomatoes, they are still good. Toss the milk, it will not be good.
