Actually Jerry moved on from that time in his youth and set the groundwork for Free, aka Physicadlic, jazz. (So much music i his life)It was only inthe late 80's he returned to explore it again. That smile was always on his face. He was a wonderful teacher and a deeply practiced buddhist , I had the extraordinary privilage to be his student, his joy was real.
Dad lost his business in '65. The bankruptcy court took everything: the houses, the cars- everything. I can't tell you how bleak the holidays were that year, but as an 8 year old, I had "A Charlie Brown Christmas." Hearing "Linus and Lucy" may be bittersweet now, but it got me through some tough times throughout the years. Thank you, Vince Guaraldi and Charles Schultz: your genius is much appreciated.
Something about Charlie brown always felt melancholic to me. I don't know why. We have the halloween one and for some reason when the episode where Charlie gets turned invisible first ended I almost wanted to cry.
That is because the drummer is one of the four members of the original band that composed this song for Peanuts. All his other brothers who were in the band passed away. He made music history when they played this song for the first time. The group wanted it to be played and ABC initially refused to have it played in the peanuts cartoon. They finally relented and it became music history.
Love Jerry Granelli on drums. If you didn't know who he was and met him on the street, you'd never guess what a smokin' cat he is on percussion. Sublime.

@Joel Springman Absolutely. I was born 6 years after it aired for the first time, and my first memories of it was when I was 10 years old, in 1981. I still get emotional when I listen to it, just because it reminds me of my childhood and when my parents were still alive. An innocent , wonderful, uncorrupted childhood, with beautiful Christmas memories. I can almost smell my mom's home baked sweet bread, and turkey roasting in the oven. Those memories will stay with me forever. Peace to you and yours during this holiday season.
Aaahh yeah. Swinging! Charles Schultz did multiple generations a huge favor by introducing them to classic jazz. Some music soundtracks just won’t work with anything else! Props to the pianist. Kept the heart of the original while creating his own style over the solo. Ten thumbs up!
It was always amazing to me how the brush and the subtle high hat have that audible impression of snow falling. Anybody else feel that way? Still the best Christmas album ever.
The look on the drummers face at the end says it all. Lots of happy memories being part of the creation of an iconic piece of music that will continue to live on for decades maybe centuries to come. And he still nails it all these years later
A classic piece of music played to perfection. Anyone who has seen the Peanuts gang dance to this can’t help but dance themselves. In fact, I always thought it was fun to guess which style of dance from the cartoon appeals to family and friends. Even more fun is guessing the style for strangers. Picturing people as cartoons dancing removes all negativity and just becomes fun. Merry Christmas to all! 💕💗💕
One hundred and twenty three thumbs downers are getting a lump of coal for Christmas. At first, I was amazed at the drummer doing what he was doing, so effortlessly, then I realized he was the original drummer for this piece. I'm still amazed but not as surprised. Like fine wine, just keeps getting better with age.
Arguably, the most recognized song for anyone over 60. The only thing better than watching Jerry Granelli play this, is being either the piano player or the bass player and playing with Jerry Granelli. A true masterpiece.
Jerry is 79 years young! Look at the joy on his face. No riches in the world can replace the happiness of making music! I think the thumbs down were people expecting a cartoon.
One Christmas season, some years ago, I put "A Charlie Brown Christmas" CD into a store CD player, "just for fun'." (Christmas Muzak for folks working at Sears back then was a form of slow torture.) Just as "Linus and Lucy" began playing, two young Japanese tourists heading into the store exclaimed: "Charlie Brown!" "Sparky" and Vince would be smiling at this tune recognition.;)
My wife has worked night audit in hotels for many years. Around Christmas she has gotten in trouble for popping this in place of the Muzak offering. Got a funny look from the boss when a guest asked during the day why they weren’t playing the same cool Christmas music as during night
I cannot let this Christmas music season go without remembering Jerry (sticks) Granelli. Gerald John Granelli (December 30, 1940 - July 20, 2021) was an American-Canadian jazz drummer. He was best known for playing drums on the soundtrack "A Charlie Brown Christmas" with Lead piano player Vince Guaraldi and the Vince Guaraldi Trio. This Just puts a smile on my face. I've always wanted to see this live.
Not only did I enjoy the music but watching the drummer and the joy in his face and manner was heartwarming. He was master of the drum set. I’m thanks for beautiful rendition and the joy and passion. Great
When anyone hears this song they don't have to know its called "Linus and Lucy". The first thing that comes to mind is "Oh yeah, that's the Charlie Brown song!"
I play piano in a local restaurant in Huntsville, AL, that bills itself as a "jazz piano bar"--it's called "Char". Tonight was my night on, and towards the end of the evening someone asked for "The Peanuts Song." I was happy to oblige. Of course, I won't put myself in the same league as Vince Guaraldi, but I have fun. Thanks for posting this. It reminds me of when I was a kid in 1964 and heard him and the guys play this and all the other great music on that show. And, Jerry Granelli looks and sounds great! Respectfully, PMH
The memories associated with this song are so strong that right now, I can see the cartoon kids dancing in my head, a little cloud of dust rising up from Pig Pen. Those were the days...
As one who grew up with “A Charlie Brown Christmas” in the 1960’s and the one and only Vince Guaraldi Trio original “Linus and Lucy” theme, I never thought anyone could hold their own with this iconic classic. But these guys do. Excellent! And it still makes me smile. Merry Christmas!

I loved this song when I heard it on live TV when the show first aired. I love it even more today. Jerry played my favorite style of soft jazz and I still try to use his moves. What a wonderful sound! RIP, Jerry!
Old dude on the drums looks like he's forgotten more about drums than most people know about them. One cool dude right there. Always have room for some good ol' Charlie Brown
I have started playing this video for friends without introducing it. Every single person listens, sometimes puzzled, til the piano hits the first 6 notes of the theme. Then they all smile, big.
Halifax representing right there. The awesome Jerry Granelli. I'm glad that for the few that don't know him, get to know him. He is one awesome drummer, as you can see!

I'll say this much: The performance is wonderful and it's always lovely to hear a great band pay tribute to the Vince Guaraldi Trio, but I wasn't all that keen on the bass mix in the beginning. No fault to the players whatsoever. But when the bassist uses his bow for those low, sustained drawls, the mix gets really overpowered.
You can tell these guys really enjoy what they do and the sound is a treat for us. Like Top Chefs in a restaurant they've greated a delicacy for us to enjoy and salivate for more.
I see pigpen dancing in a cloud of dirt..and I like it.
Jerry was still BURNIN when they did this! Great version!
