    I do the same thing with painting. No matter how slow I am, I can't stop futzing around on my minis, despite desperately wanting to just paint something fun and simple. One of the awesome things about Minecraft is that it helped my son learn a lot of resiliency and lets him get frustrated and angry in a safe way.

      I feel your pain about the painting thing. Been there, bought the T-shirt! I presume you enjoy a few of the major mini-painting channels? Did you consider trying to limit your time so you force yourself to focus on what's important; after a few reps it might help you to be able to switch to that specific mindset to get simpler things done and out of the grey army (or I should say, pile of opportunity 🙂). Alternatively, maybe lean into your tendencies and start working exclusively on display/hero models?
      Very interesting about your son and Minecraft! I'll file that away in my mental bank of details about some of the valuable ways that computer games can help us real-world. FPS games certainly helped me improve my coordination and reaction time in my 30s, and that has stayed with me into my 50s.

      @@tungsten_carbide My current plan is letting myself go ham on character models but making myself batch paint the troops. Let's me scratch the "try hard" itch, and it helps me figure out shortcuts that I use on the troops.
      Yeah, Minecraft and similar games have been great for giving him ways to express and deal with emotions with lower stakes. Also it has been a great barometer of how he is doing emotionally. He used to hate survival mode because it stressed him out so much, but now he starts new survival worlds regularly.

    Growing up in the 80s we had 3 TV channels available to us. Once or twice a week they would play a movie, sometimes a good one, most times not that great. Whatever was available. Except around New Year. Then you would get 3 days of movies, cartoons and TV shows, almost 24/7. I remember waiting for the NY edition of newspapers which had the entire TV schedule for the Holidays and then I would spend hours highlighting the stuff I wanted to watch and basically organizing my schedule around it. It was just epic. And I would stay up until 3 am and wake up at 7am next day just to catch some of the things that were on. For example, the whole Indiana Jones trilogy (back then it was still just a trilogy and this became a NY tradition for me ever since, to watch the movies).
    Fast Forward to a few nights ago. I couldn't sleep so I logged in on Netflix and turned on Maverick. Great movie, especially for a kid who wanted to be a fighter pilot (or a space fighter pilot). But all I had to do to get it was press a few buttons. And I can pause when I want to get a drink or go to the toilet. Don't get me wrong it was still great but I miss that feeling of running from the toilet and jumping over the couch because the commercial break ended and the movie was about to restart, pants barely being held up by one hand, and let's not talk about what those stains are, we can just say I got splashed by the water while I was washing my hands...

    Oooh gosh I don't think about this the same way at all!
    I have no interest in games being hard, mostly because the loss of progress feels like a waste of my limited time (and tangentally, sandbox video games are too undirected of an activity for the limited time I have for games).
    But my tabletop hobby is fuelled by the notion that the things I'm taking time to craft have purpose beyond me making or painting them - they're game pieces! Getting to use them to tell unique stories that don't look like anyone else's is much more of a motivator to finish a work than the work being hard to make.

    I was gonna say that it's the prospect of beating a challenge or obstacle through testing myself that is the thing I enjoy, not really the struggle itself... then I recalled going to a geek convention and signing up for a workshop in sumi-e ink painting (I'm one of those multi-talented artists that takes to new arts with relative ease). It's one of my absolute favorite convention memories, because I absolutely suck at it. It simply isn't one of the things I could pick up and do. I can recall sitting in that workshop thoroughly enjoying sucking at it and trying to learn the basics, complete joy of being outside of 'easy mode'. I later adapted some of the techniques to other mediums (charcoal, watercolor, or pencil) with more success, but I still suck at the traditional artform, and it makes me happier than I ever would have been if I had show any aptitude for it the first time.

    The single biggest reason I quit playing 5e. It's easy mode. There's no threat, no tension. Course it's also why I start many projects but don't finish them. But we're not here for that!

    • @tabletopalchemy
      @tabletopalchemy  7 місяців тому +1

    • @dirigoallagash3464
      @dirigoallagash3464 7 місяців тому

      @tabletopalchemy nope. Zero interest in 5e. Not only do I dislike the superhero vibe, but I don't like the mechanics. Just total burnout. I've moved on to games like Forbidden Lands or Electric Bastionland. And even though I haven't played it yet, I've been surprised/intrigued by Shadowdark.
      These are all low hp, low magic, OSR-ish games that scratch the rpg itch for me. 5e 'is' a good game, but it's a superheroes game. I don't even like superhero movies anymore!😆

    Interesting as ever. There's been a curious shift in psychology theory relatively recently linked to dopamine in the brain. It used to be considered that we get that dopamine high from completing something difficult; beating a challenge. The current theory is that we actually get the dopamine from the process and the activity to do the thing, not complete the thing. Hence, actually completing a thing can actually feel anti-climatic.

      I’ve experienced this for sure. My (admittedly “student film quality”) first feature won a top award at a (very small) local film festival. That night was an extremely fun high point but it was so fleeting as to be ephemeral. And it was immediately back to “the grind” lol.

    So true! My hubby and I love survival games but there comes a hump and when you get over it being hard the drive to keep playing diminishes. diminishing return maybe for me in the hobby is after I have primed and completed maybe 80% of it and then burn out? I don't know if it's that I got over that hump or it is that ugly stage in the build where I just need to push and finish and say to myself it will look OK when done. I notice if I only put one model or project on my desk although I don't work on it everyday I usually finish it. where when I put several models on the desk I end up finishing more but maybe pushing one of them aside and not really finishing it cause for some reason it didnt thrill me like the others? where if it was done alone I would have finished it.

    • @tabletopalchemy

    When those kids say "you should make it more aesthetic" they mean "you should make it more "stylish," or maybe "artistic." It is grammatically wrong, but "style" and "aesthetic" are often synonyms, and it's a short leap to "stylish" and "aesthetic" as synonyms, hence the confusion. On the positive side, we can't educate anyone worth a damn these days, and "aesthetic" is hard to spell.

    People think the dunning kruger effect is just dumb people thinking they are smart. This is a gross oversimplification. Its actually a feature of human psychology. We overestimate our capabilities. This is crucial. Our reach must exceed our grasp or we never learn our limits. Failure is built into life and has been with us from the beginning. Its a strange kind of ally.
