I saw a BBC documentary where Dundee claimed that his way of telling Ali that it was time to quit was to make some extremely vague reference to a conversation they'd had fifteen years earlier. Ferdie Pacheco wrote to Dundee after the Shavers fight, outlining the damage that Ali had suffered and why he should not fight again but Dundee never responded. Not good enough.

Ali did not carry aging Archie Moore when they fought, so no, Holmes had no obligation to go easy on an aging Ali. And when Ali caught Holmes late in round one, that was not Ali going light.
Totally agree..BIG difference..Holmes is stiff..effective as hell but stiff..speed and timeing win out as Tyson says its the punches you don't see and Alis "snake lick" was highest on the throne IMO

100%. Especially after two years out of the ring. When you take into account the thyroid medication that caused Al's body to seriously overheat, he could have easily died.
Ali really thought he could beat Holmes because years earlier he could handle him when Holmes was his sparring partner, but that was 1974, this is 1980 and Ali had declined massively and Holmes had gotten better, Ali was also messed up on some kind of medication he was taking that weakened him badly during the fight, some say he already had early Parkinson's during the fight also

Julian Davis Ali had a faster jab and more accurate. Ali footwork and hand speed was better also. Larry couldn't match his combinations in no way shape or form. Ali from 64-67 would destroy holmes. Ali from 70-75 also. 76 -78 is even debatable
I agree. Holmes knew this wasn't going to be a real bout, Ali was definitely gone by now due to the Parkinson's. Even though he was much older, I still think if it weren't for his disease he may of beat him, but it's debatable. Holmes wasn't proud of this victory.

We at ImaSportsphile believe Larry got robbed on both fights with Spinks....the 1st fight was the worst robbery.....cuz we believe that any challenger to a champions belt HAS to beat that champ substantially....KO, TKO or Bloody Beating w/ several knockdowns.....and Spinks didn't even come close to that. Larry was robbed because he was about to tie Marciano....a race card play by the folks who controlled boxing !?! The 2nd fight was less of a robbery....cuz Holmes was the challenger and he didn't TAKE the crown from Spinks....much in the same way as Spinks didn't TAKE the crown from Holmes in the 1st fight.
