Dude the tones you’re getting are great! And I did buy the pedal, I think it’s great. It sounds amazing! The gate is probably the best on board gate on any pedal I’ve used.
This pedal has some nice features that most other distortion pedals do not have. Split gain controls. 5-band EQ section. Gate knob. It sounds good. But all these pedals sound the same to me. I like the Friedman BE-OD Deluxe.
Thank you for your honesty, Kyle. Not everybody likes every piece of gear and it's nice to hear some real opinions rather than someone glossing over the negatives on a piece of gear for a quick payday. At one point the tone reminded me of Madhouse by Anthrax.
Thanks for being honest at the end. Something that would be really cool is to see something like this with a Spark Amp. That may be what many people only have.
I found the Chug pedal to be awesome going into my Fryett PS2. I also have the Soldano SLO pedal and it only sounds great when putting my Dirty Tree in front of it.
I love Ola's channel and I've been a fan and subscriber for almost a decade, but I agree with you man; it's just not a pedal I'm really feeling. I played around with mine for a solid two days straight and came to the conclusion it's kind of a one trick (tone) pony. It sounds great when I'm jammin in Drop-C and trying to get a djenty super high gain tone with really accentuated mids and tight lows, but lacks shape control in the high frequency range which is typically the most troublesome when it comes to suppressing the unwanted harmonics inherent to high gain tones. I respect your honesty in reviewing gear bro!
This setup would make an incredible fly rig or a setup for a dude like me who's the singer and just plays on a few songs a set. I'm definitely interested in combining it with a powerstage for just this reason.
It took me a bit but I got it dialed in. Had to run to the front of the amp tho (I couldn’t get it to work to my liking through the effects loop). Very tin-ny sound had to cut the high gain control all the way down and back the highs down to about 11 o’clock then I finished the sound off with the 10 band eq. 🤷♂️
Found your channel due to the fact I'm struggling with the pedal too. I also am a fan of Ola and his channel and was very excited to get this pedal,,, I can't get a usable tone. When I plug strait into my interface it has an oscillating sound which I don't feel is normal. Also something to note that I didn't notice,,,, NO EXCHANGES OUTSIDE OF THE EU,,,,, period,,,, and they were quick and final with the response. Maybe I need something to drive it but for 200 bucks why,,, thanks for the review and glad someone else is struggling too.
So I just sent my MXR 5150 OD back cuz I couldn’t get any kind of tone out of it that I liked. Ironically, Ola did a demo of it with a Solar King V through the 5150 into the clean channel of a Randall. The tones he gets out of that setup are some of my favorite. In fact I recorded a few seconds of it and made a ringtone cuz I like it so much LOL Anyway, I’m looking at something with more gain so I thought I’d try a preamp. I’m torn between this Chug and the KSR Ceres (another one Ola did a demo on and got some amazing tones). So…. What does everyone think, the Solar Chug, or the KSR Ceres?
I think you may have gotten a faulty pedal, taylor danley did a video where he used a tube screamer in front and it sounded great. Ive also boosted mine before and it sounds great. I'm not sure why yours didnt. Maybe its dialed in differently from ours or maybe its faulty
BTW, I'm guessing you're going for a mid or so 90s/early 2000s tone. I also think you did a very honest and accurate review of the pedal. It is exactly what you said it is for. 👍
A friend of mine got his in the mail the other day and I got to give it a test drive.. it definitely seems to favor anything tuned to C and lower. Especially baritone or 7/8 strings. While I do play C and lower often, this would just be superfluous.
Got this pedal for modern metal tones. It does the job but too much high end for my taste. Would prefer the treble to have more range. One of the best gates I have ever used. I give it a 7 out of 10.
Based on all the demos I've seen, I haven't really loved the sound of it either tbh. I do like the idea of a low frequency crossover though to control the amount of gain on the low end differently.
Your starting tone sounded really killer. I'm surprised to see you turing gain that high yet your tone doesn't even sound that distorted - it sounds really clean. I have gain usually turned below 5. I use a Maxon 820 but have this same rig - Peavey 6505 + and a 90s Mesa Cab and a Jackson KVT guitar that sounds really good but I have to admit - whenever I've tried Gibson guitars, 3 of them in the last 10 years, they sounded a bit better, a bit flatter, neutral but worked better in the mix.
Yeah this thing sounds killer to me. I'm loving the mids of this thing. And its aggressive as hell. I'm honestly surprised Kyle doesn't care for it but after explaining, it makes sense. This pedal is pretty darn modern sounding for sure!
I kind of don't get the fact that he doesn't like that it won't get his particular tone. He did state that he like he likes the older tone type pedals. It's a chug pedal lol not a 80's rock pedal 😂
Oh, and I bought a oversized Mesa 412 cab and I came to your channe first to buy it using an affiliate link, but it wasn't on there (or at least that I could find). It's quite possible I'm just a jackA$$ and the affiliate links work differently than I thought. If that is the case, you should make a quick video on how they work, and more specifically if we can use your affiliate link to buy anything on Sweetwater so you get a kickback, and we can better support the channel rather than only the specific piece of gear the link takes us to when selected. I'd imagine this has happened to others who want to support the channel as well, and we (gear heads) need people who give no BS honest reviews on gear 🤘
I would try it on a t.c.Electronic G. System Guitar Pros.. It has boost & many more tones! My Guitar a, Draco V. is a deep dark sounding thing in sound! Don't even need to down tune it~!
I tried my Chug pedal through the clean channel on my JP2C and it didn’t sound good at all. Going into the FX return it sounded great. But, to my knowledge, you can’t use other FX in the loop when you run it that way. I also ran the Chug into my Fryett Power Station 2 with my FX in the loop on the PS2 and it sounded amazing. I dialed the gain to noon and got great 80s metal tones. I used Olas Chug, Amp Settings video as a starting point. Especially the pedal settings for going into the FX return of the Mesa amp.
Looks like Ola took a page out of the metal zone's playbook with the concentric pots in the eq section. Boss is really the only manufacturer I've seen with the concentric Pots, and frequency sweep. Tons of versatility but usually requires taming the frequencies to get a usable tone. You said your not a huge fan of the pedal, but your tones are pretty decent man.
I've been scouring online for a decent deal on a used LTD BK600, gorgeous. The pedal is alright imo. I'll pass, lil to scratchy on the attack. I like percussive chugs, but not quite that percussive. Prefer more low end instead.
I ordered right when the Chug was announced, got it only a few days later, tested it in depth, but I was really disappointed. The two gain control knobs are not really doing a good job in my opinion, the mid frequency EQ filter is far too wide and overall the pedal does not offer a lot of gain. I do love Solar guitars, but I already sold the Chug pedal.
it is a fine pedal. i have ordered one also. I'm not sold either.neither do i hate it. the gain for me is way to stiff.I'm constantly like, where's the gain. it sounds really dry to me.

It sounds okay. I've never been a fan of these style of pedals. I'd much rather use an amp with traditional style OD pedals. I've been playing guitar for 25+ years and I've seen a lot of "gimmicks" come and go over the years. However, a well built tube amp never goes out of style.
I would have to agree on that. Every time I tried a preamp pedal, I went back to my tube amps. Only exception for me is the Bluguitar Iridium. It's a full amp and not just a preamp, granted, but that thing blew me away. It really sounds and feels like a tube amp and I'm sure 99.99% of guitar players wouldn't be able to tell the difference between a real amp and this in a live setting. It's that good.
@@Lenser Personally I think the Iridium is pretty cheap for what you get to be honest (4 channels, a built-in noise gate, reverb, boost and the fact that you can change the tone of the channels and the type of boost). Plus, if you buy one from Thomann, it's 739 USD, which is a pretty sweet price haha
@@yowild9629 You're right. That's a possibility. Unfortunately, Kyle didn't try using it in front of the 6505. So, I didn't get to hear how it would sound, running it like that.
Depends i think. My setup is a 8100 preamp in a pedal into the return of a vk100h. A marshall 8100 is a rare gem on the market and known to break on the road. And i do have to say. That preamp pedal is exactly like the amp itself. Using the vk100 gives the option for depth and presence control + theres a pot on the back where you can change the powerstage in the vk. Great to dial in depending on the stage you are playing
I guess Ola didn’t know that Chug is a derogatory term here in Canada. That being said, would you say it’s voiced similar to a Fortin Grind or a Precision Drive?
Yeah, if you were going for more classic sounds then you picked the wrong pedal. But you know that. Lol. Sucks that you couldn't get the tone you want. I have same preference as you. I've played on some more modern voiced stuff lately, and I find that a modern voice is best for down tuned 7 strings or 8 strings. But the mids are too "spanky" for 6 strings imo. "Spanky" is the best way I can describe it. If you can I would definitely try plugging a down tuned 7 string through it.
Kyle, that Les Paul! OMG, that Les Paul. I'm in love. It's just beautiful. Did it have Custombuckers in it? I'd give you a kidney for that guitar with the stock pickups. I'd give you a toe for the stock pickups. Heh, as far as I'm concerned, the star of this video is that Les Paul. I can't concentrate on anything else!
Ola is the self declared expert who cant decide if something chugs or not. He is a most arbitrary and confused man whos credibility borders on the negative.
You know I might get a lot of shit for this but the guitar you use doesn't actually matter the only difference in the pickups is the output and signal clarity there's not a real tonal difference on high gain. Glenn fricker tested it on his channel on a blind test and no one could really tell the difference besides the difference between humbucker and single coil
I don't think it's that expensive compared to similar pedals these days. Just look at the revv stuff, KSR or the new Soldano pedal. If it's worth that much for you, that's another question.
To be fair KSR Ceres and Vesta are 3 channel pedals. You can have a clean, crunch, and lead tone on one pedal. Plus it's made in the u.s. and you know who makes it and they have damn good customer service.
Hard pass for me. Not enough gain and wtf a pedal called Chug and you can’t scoop the mids?? That mid knob is dialed in a very weird frequency. Too modern

Okay if Ola said it chugs then it chugs! Nah just kidding I believe that's 200 dollar pedal. That's expensive,
I don't think it's that expensive compared to similar pedals these days. Just look at the revv stuff, KSR or the new Soldano pedal. If it's worth that much for you, that's another question.
@@patfix It is for made in China (not talking about quality, just price)
To be fair KSR Ceres and Vesta are 3 channel pedals. You can have a clean, crunch, and lead tone on one pedal. Plus it's made in the u.s. and you know who makes it and they have damn good customer service.
Hard pass for me. Not enough gain and wtf a pedal called Chug and you can’t scoop the mids?? That mid knob is dialed in a very weird frequency. Too modern
The Pedal is absolutely awesome🤘. Clean your ears Kyle 😄. Your review of it will make me buy one soon.
No no no you have to start with all knobs off then play with them randomly so you can waste a minute or so lol
Amp goes chug chug better
Chug! Chug! Chug!
Overdrive is a boost. You can't boost a boost pedal....
this isn't a boost pedal, it's a distortion/preamp pedal. Two very different things
By the way, you can boost a boost pedal. 😃 And this isn't an overdrive or boost. It's a distortion/preamp pedal. There's a difference
@@schecter7elite801 YOU CAN'T BOOST A BOOST PEDAL
@@belligerentamateur THEY'RE THE SAME THING BECAUSE I SAY SO
@@joshsmith7033 nailed it
You of all people should know a pedal can never do an amps job
Edit:you do
This is a chug pedal, not a quad cortex, dude.
I quite literally have no idea what that's supposed to mean
@@belligerentamateur It's a dirty ass pleb analog pedal, not a top notch complicated DSP programmed with algorithms more complex than 4th dimensional black hole math.
Bro is your thumb okay? lol looks like it got smashed
It can't be boosted...? Feck it so.
will it chug...guess not lol
If you like dudes who look like Matt Damon's son, use steroids, and only play E-F-G and G# power chords.... you are in the right place! 😆
@TheCyberMantis Do you really think that @Kyle Bull uses steroids or was that just part of the joke?
@@KeithMcKissick Roids are more common than most expect, for sure, but I don’t think the Bull is on the Bull testosterone.. 😅
@@Steadybeheady Lol. I will admit that I'm a bit naive about steroids. Didn't even know that an acquaintance was juicing until he flipped over a table during a conference meeting and lost his job.
@@KeithMcKissick I can see that as a good thing, seeing as knowledge of roids is a learned knowledge. That’s a bit terrifying lol.
I had a buddy go through the lengths of creating fake emails that he “received” by a fake Dr account he made, about this experimental cancer treatment. Had people including me give him his “treatment”.
Some more naivety!
@@KeithMcKissick I am only joking, but lots of younger dudes are on the roids these days. It's all about vanity.
Less talk and more play
zero play and more spelunking
Quit putting it in the loop. Go thru the front.
No.
@@belligerentamateur Suit yourself.
Less talk, more playing, adjusting pedal knobs, and more playing.
You're no Ola Englund
I will make sure to not play at all moving forward. thanks!
@@belligerentamateur Wow, is that supposed to be some kind of rebuttal? We want to hear the pedal, not you. LOL
@@BeyondOurSolarSystem I want to hear me, not you. LOL
@@belligerentamateur I'm not emitting any sounds from my mouth at the moment. I'm texting. You were not emitting sounds from your amp coming from pedal as your video title promise. What we heard was you describing the sound that was supposed to be coming from that pedal and out of your amp.
I just had some black beans. Perhaps later I will be emitting sounds. But that's for me to share with the Mormons at my local grocery store who keep fuching with me. I like to fuch with them back.
Cheers!!
