      Zuckerberg could also complete the Murph challenge in 39:58 which include wearing a 9kg vest and doing:
      one mile run
      100 pull ups
      200 push ups
      300 squats
      one mile run.
      He is pretty fit in all aspects and I am gonna try to beat his time in this challenge. Running two one miles with 9kg is going to be the biggest obstacle for me.

Having gone from a 47 year old, 5 foot 7 inch, 14 .5 stone blob in August last year to 11 stone and 20 mins 30 secs at a parkrun now, I can safely say that need to average over 15kph for 5km ain't easy. After only back running 2 months now from a year off of very poor mental and physical health I got my 5k back under 25:00 today (all time PB of 22:30), not a huge milestone to some but it took a long time and a lot of work to get there the first time and im very happy to be on the right track again looking forward to each run. Lesson of the day: run like a robot. Zuck does it naturally, for the rest of us, clearly a pacer does wonders.

    • @chrisgilligan4968
      @chrisgilligan4968 10 місяців тому +1

      For sure maintaining a consistent pace at your threshold is the best route to running your best times. Figuring out what your threshold pace is for a given distance and practicing running that pace is a critical piece to improving. The longer the race, the more important pacing becomes. Mark was not super consistent with his pacing in attempt #2, but because the event is only 5k you can get away with some variance. If he would have been able to run right on 3:48 /km for all 5 it would give him his best chance at breaking the 19 minute barrier...practicing and getting the feel of how fast your feet turnover, and your breathing at that pace helps you to execute the pace out on the course. There are some watches now that have a pacer feature that shows you visually if you are ahead of, or behind a virtual pacer...the good part of that is that it is GPS based and you get real time data every step, not just at the km or mile markers.

    • @mjowsey
      @mjowsey 10 місяців тому

      @@chrisgilligan4968 watches are great for pacing. Keeping up with another human is even better. A lot of people at parkrun run very consistently week after week. Get to know the people who are a little faster than you at your local parkrun and chase them down. Exactly as Mark just demonstrated!

    Entertaining video! Think you hit the nail on the head when mentioning his size and weight. From my experience, if you've done a reasonable amount of running in the past, providing you keep yourself active and don't gain the weight you can still run reasonably well off doing less training (although it becomes more difficult with age). When you're a bigger guy it's much harder to get and stay running fit. After 12 years off myself, the weight is the main thing holding me back from running close to the times I once did

    I fall into the "good build for running" group but am currently averaging 5:45/km. Not racing others, just racing myself. Immensely impressed by Zuckerberg's pace and any other person making their legs do that pace at my height. Seeing 30-something women at 5'3" run regular 4:40s blows my mind. I've found that doing a lot of zone 2 and now pushing my arse up mountains when trail running has helped my flat run pace by 15 sec/km. Next step: sleep more. DO HARD THINGS!

    You've been a big reason for my recent decision to get fit and healthy again in my late 30's, so thanks for the inspiration! I mainly indoor row on the concept 2 in my pain cave. Even though i'm not 6' 2", it's still been my fav activity since my early 20's gym bro days.
    A few years ago i bought a PaddleSport Training paddle adapter kit for it to add some rotational training in the form of paddling, which has been a lot of fun.
    Stick with me, I'm getting to the point. Recently I watched a video where you did a race on a stand up paddleboard, which looked a lot of fun, so the other day I bought an amazon special side to side wobble board (+ grip tape on the floor to stop any unwanted rotation) which now allows me to stand up and paddle! Great fun! Adds a huge core/balance component that i was missing.
    I'd recommend trying it, especially if you're doing more SUP races. Perhaps PaddleSport Training would even send you a free one. If nothing else you could probably squeeze a video or two out of it.
    Stay hard..

Agreed about your comments re government support and fitness activities.keep up the …frankly …great videos. You being you and not ashamed of admitting frailties, deficiencies and mistakes (followed big a good historical movie or song reference) and finishing positive is why I watch you. I’m getting gold medals in my mind about walking around a ward with nurse and a trolley of drips and electronics. Can’t wait to tie on my ASICS and get out on some trails again.

    Thanks for the motivation Mark 😅, I am getting out the door now for a hopefully easyish 8km. I'm wondering if you know of any celebs (or well known computer nerds) with 5km times of just under 22 minutes? I am currently just starting on a 5km training plan after taking extended time off after a 88km ultra race in mid June and could use some motivation to get my 5km time back to under 22 minutes which is a time that I haven't run in a few years now 😅, the closest being a few sub 22 minutes 30 seconds attempts in 2022 😬. Keep up the good work and the cool, zany and thought provoking videos Mark 🙌

    This would help so many people so much, but it is not stressed enough in society, in my opinion.

    The Crossfit Games took place a week or so ago and they did a 5K run in that. Winning time for the men was 16:39. Second was the guy who won the Games as a whole, a 5ft 9 Canadian who weighs 14st and whose Olympic Total (Snatch+C&J) was 642lbs. His 5k time was 16:46

      Crossfit is notorious for inflating runners pace and distance. I watched an event last year and the paces they talked about runners had were laughable just by measuring yourself. They inflated their running speed often up to 30sec less /km.

    Facebook speed is a new thing.
    Funny how successful A type personalities like you have a difficult time keeping a good, honest and steady pace. When I coached triathlon full of $10k bikes attached to Porsches, keeping the A types in check was by far the most difficult.
    With all the tech it should be easy but the orangutang almost always took over and the end of the race was a death march despite all the promises prior to the race.
    Nice running man.
    After some injuries I am finally getting back into running. Did a hilly 5 miles the other day at 8min/mile pace. Felt alive!

    I'm 67 and still exercising everyday, something I have done most of my life. These days I'm in to resistance bands and body weight exercises and road cycling having, to give up running and weight training due to old injuries coming back to bite me in the arse! But, I still can't resist a challenge when racing and always finish way up in any races beating guys (and women!) over half my age which is the thing that gives me a real buzz. I just wonder how many would put in that extra effort knowing that the guy going past them is old enough to be their grandfather!!

    Definitely not built for running, but I love it anyway.
    Was born with a pretty severe clubbed foot, had 3 major surgeries and two minor.
    PB is just over 25 minutes, but I’m not concerned with that. My focus is on building my durability with slow regular 5k runs.
