Jen constantly trying new things and pushing herself has been incredibly inspiring for me, a few months ago I’d dismissed anything over 5k as out of my reach… but seeing both of your journeys allowed me to change my thinking to “you don’t know what your body is capable of until you try” which allowed me to then complete a 17km trail run a few days ago and live to tell the tale! Onwards and upwards! Thank you both!
It's great you had the emotional maturity to know when to back off and let Jen be at the end when she was suffering. Knowing when to back off can make an event difficult but enjoyable vs ignoring her feelings and pushing her and making the event a miserable memory.
I'm so impressed by Jen's ability to just jump in to new territory with enthusiasm. I hate starting new things because i don't like being bad at it, you're an inspiration
It's hard to be good at something until you're bad at it first! What's better, a life filled with adventures you're not perfect at, or a life filled with sameness, limited in challenges and adventure? YOU are the only person expecting perfection of yourself. Besides, if you never give yourself the opportunity to do badly at something, you'll never have the chance to see the things you're great at! Life is short, don't waste it worrying about what others think of how you spend your time!
This channel has got me into running and I started off this year at a max of 700m and now I do a 10k and can go about my day to day life after it too. It's been a life changer and in the next couple of years I'm going to try for a marathon. All I got to say is Thanks Mark and Jen for giving me the push I needed to improve my self.
Well done Jen, I've been following your running journey with interest as I'm training for my first marathon in October. 18 miles to do next, which having just watched you crush this has inspired me to stop worrying and just get it done 🎉
Honestly, this channel is so inspiring to me. I'm new to running, after power walking 10km a day for the last 6 months and losing 31 kilos I decided to try running, now 2 months later I'm hitting just under 30 minutes for my 5km and I'm really enjoying it. Thanks to this channel I would love to work to running a 50k in the future. It's a long way off but I am more than happy to put in the work for it. Great advice, delivered with honesty, straight talking and wit. Proper down to earth. Learning loads, so thanks very much 👍
Great job Jen! Appreciate you mentioning the kit and nutrition, would love an episode that gets into more detail on how you do the math. I always struggle with how to calculate how many carbs/electrolytes I should consume on longer endurance events. Also, love the comment on fixing small things right away, never really considered it, but will have to pay attention. I am doing my first Spartan Ultra in October and this game me some encouragement!

You can do a lot with just will power. I ran the London Marathon in 2017 for charity and didn't train (don't follow my example) I could do a half without much issue, but the full almost ended me. It took 7 hours and I was in agony but I did it by constantly telling myself that the only way I was going to stop was if I collapsed. I started running in May, barely able to get 3k done and ~30kg overweight. Now I'll be doing a 21k trailrun next week and felt really down the last few days, really doubting my ability to do it. I managed to do a 21k street run in training and had a few good long runs, but something just got a hold of me and let me doubt myself. I've discovered your videos two days ago and been watching Jen push through mountain trails and this 50k. It's really inspiring to me and helps me a lot with my (mental) preparation. Thanks for these videos!

Jen’s journey has been incredibly inspiring for me. We’re very alike in the e se that we can do a lot, but for a long time just haven’t been bothered to because we were skinny or seen as “healthy” by others. I’ve always dreamed of being an athlete but never stuck to anything consistently and I’ve always loved running. About 5 years ago I ran a half marathon with absolutely no training and no activity at all in my regular day to day and ran it in 3h19min. Yesterday I ran a 12km, again, with no preparation or activity beforehand and did it in 2h01min. I know I’m heavier and obviously less fit than 5 years ago and I want to get better at that. This channel has truly inspired me to try and get consistent with training to just live a more active lifestyle. Thank you for sharing both your journeys with us. Lots of love from Mozambique!

Fantastic job Jen. Glad you were able to share this experience. Nothing wrong with setting big goals and trying new things. Looking forward to what is next as well!
Congratulations Jen! For every ultra runner, there are different reasons, motivations, methods. It might start off one way, and morph. The only consistent hard and fast thing is crossing that finish line. Fast or slow, competitive or leisurely, walking breaks or running only, that's just all personal preference. Cross that finish line, and you've earned the pride and confidence that accomplishing an awesome challenge brings. So many people go through life feeling unseen, not special or admirable, strong or truly capable, or part of something unique. I wish everyone could experience these things by tackling a 50k just once in their lives.
Congratulations. Great to watch and pick up some tips. I started running again at the end of last year with a view to being fit when I turned 60 (last month). I set myself some targets for a 5K and half-marathon, but my son has entered me for a 50K Ultra in October as a birthday present! At least we're running it together; hoping to break 6 hours as well.
Parkrun to 50km in a year (without injury) is really impressive stuff. Cannot dismiss how the body adapts to running over years of doing it, or as you put it - the hard pounding 😅 few years time and with the right attitude Jen will be leaving you in the dust.
As a runner who hasn’t had time to do my usual thing, it’s interesting to see her a newbie try to do something like this!!; although with your help/motivation I’m glad she did well after training for a year!! It’s inspiring 14:26
I ran that race, didn't see you though, i had an early start time, it was a good event. I also did no training but still enjoyed myself. Well done to jen for finishing.
I did a 50k last year for the first time. Great experience and keen to get back into it once I have a bit more free time again. I also went out a bit fast and didn't realise how hilly parts of the course were. In the end I was a bit slower than I would have liked but I really had to dig in and, realistically, there was no way I would have done it any faster. I did up to 42k training runs though, while it sounds like Jen really was winging it. Fair play and a good effort. I hope it doesn't deter her! Also, your description of a typical ultra runner matched me a little too closely!
Hey I hope you're happy with yourself. Found this channel a week ago and I've just signed up for a Spartan Super in 2024, all because of you. I also went for age group (I'm 44). Oh and I forgot to mention I only started back with fitness 2 weeks ago after 3 years of being unkind to myself by getting very out of shape. Thanks 🙃😬
Its amazing how watching a bunch of his videos makes you consider these insane things. I have bad knees and hips and I am thinking "I could do a Hyrox or a Spartan". at least I am pushing harder in the gym now than I ever was before.
He's got a lot to answer for😂 I started running last year, 3 half marathons before the year was out, 20 mile mountain run in April and finished my first marathon/ultra last month with a 50k trail... enjoy the journey💪
I'm training for the Peak District Ultra next year, and this channel is one of my main motivating factors. Although I doubt I'll look as dignified as the two of you
Yeah, I don't want to run 100 feet. I can ride a 100K without issue or even 100miles. But my body is to old and beat up to do running anymore. My Dr. would scream NO!!! at me if I even tried with how bad my knees are. Glad to see you made it Jen! Great work! Great job Mark on not getting yourself tossed in front of a car and knowing Jen's limits. :)
It's not about liking getting pounded... running is proven to strengthen the bones and ligaments of the knees. I have bad knees from a car accident as a child. When I don't run, they ache terribly. When I'm running regularly on the trails, even 50ks, I'm pain free, on top of all the fun and challenge trail running brings! It's only a pounding if you're doing it wrong or your knees are already beyond redemption.
You guys are awesome! I ran my first 50k 2 months ago and I’ve got 2 50 milers left before the seasons done. So cool that you ran this together. My wife loves her bike, but I don’t think I could ever get her to run an ultra with me!
Nail on head about the strength work paying dividends. Really well done to both of you - well, mostly Jen for completing her first ultra and also not pushing Mark under a passing car! This is genuinely inspiring, just over 4 weeks to my first ultra - 55km with 1300m climb - and this makes me feel a bit less worried about it!
13:45 A cool car drives by. Also great job by Jen. I don't really like running but that could be me not running with proper technique. My poison anyway is cycling.
I think I need to swap my training. I run, I love running. Trail runs are my happy place. I have done up to half marathons. But I am slow! A 50km ultra is where I would love to be but my half marathon time is 3:45 so I can't make any cut offs at the moment 😭 one day though!💪
Super impressive stuff! I've just completed my longest run today (started running 3 months ago 2x/week) of 6.5km. I'm slowly building to a 10k and maybe even a half marathon. Seeing Jen's determination and openness to challenges is very inspiring. Also, I have a question. I experience chafing on my inner thighs during running. How do you prevent it? Or what would you recommend I do? What "sports lubricant" do you use? (I heard you mention it in the video.)
I believe there is a video on his channel about running tips that goes into more detail about lubrication. There are specialised ones, or some people just use vaseline. For some areas tape works. It might also be that you can adjust your clothing to remedy the issue. Loads of tips online. :)
You're very entertaining. I've found myself with more spare time than normal for the past few weeks so I've been watching your videos; some moments make me laugh out loud quite genuinely. I am quite literally stuck in middle ground - I have been exercising frequently since quitting smoking around 10 years ago but now realise that without change/sacrifice/goal, I will remain at where I am. It would be nice to excel at something.
Congratulations to Jen on becoming an ultra runner! I'm really only an ultra run/hiker at best. 😂 That not hard enough to be challenging, but hard enough to wear you down effort is mentally brutal! That is why I find easy runs mentally harder sometimes than a workout of similar or even longer distance.
My personal best doing a 10 mile (16.1K) trail run/walk is 2hrs 39min and Ive been walking it for years LOL . . . Only started adding the running this last year but I do keep getting better and I have 1400' of elevation gain/loss. Average HR yesterday (new PR) was 148 BPM at 68 years old. I would love to get that down to 2hrs flat but I'll have to lose 20 pounds because I cant burn that many calories in 2hrs if I dont. Because of the hills I cannot get a pace to stick too but I can try and get a heart rate range to stick to which for now is all I can think of. If I keep the HR below 165 I have a little more left at the end but yesterday run got me to 170 for a short spell.
I really enjoyed your video…entirely humorous and educational. Now a subscriber. Hoping to do a half marathon in Paris in a couple of months. After that a 25k in California in the Sierras. Thanks much.
The hurdle I came up against was nutrition not eating enough and not consuming enough carbs when doing Ultra's. My current training has me on the trail "The Ceveland Way" part of "The Hardmoors" series of ultra's experimenting with nutrition. Atm training for the Salomon Serpent Trail 100 and I might do the Hardmoors 60.
Awesome to watch and seriously impressive! Can I ask what pack you're using? I'm a similar build to you, and struggling to find one that I can run in wearing a vest and not rub between arms/ribcage. Thanks, Sam
Great video, great effort. I off road run with two good mates, one seventy, the other fifty two and I am nearly fifty eight. I am asthmatic and had problems since having COVID May last year but still enjoy the runs.keep up the great work.
Well done Jen, nice to get the first one in the bag. I think Mark you will crush the 100k this year, as you are getting some decent preps in with a 200k bike and 50k run.
Well done both, Jen for getting that 50km under your belt and Mark for biting your tongue at the end 😅 Cant wait for the 100km! Nervous as well because its a terrifying distance and 42 feels strenuous enough!
Hot dang Jen! Congrats! This has been a fun journey getting to this point, from a spectators' point of view! Can't wait to see how the 100k turns out, even if she only runs the 50k, what an accomplishment in such a short time!
This video has just dropped at the right time for me (or not) my colleague has just had to pull out of the ultra X Wales 50k (up/down Cadair Idris total 1830 m elevation). So, having always wanted to do an ultra, I took his place (three weeks' notice). The furthest I have run this year is 10k! I must be mad, but let's see how my body and mind cope! I ran my first marathon 43 years ago without any training and have not run a marathon for 42 years since I hit the wall. Thanks for the tips, I have also got my precision hydration and nutrition ready, slow and steady is my plan.
@@TrickyMicky123456 i just completed the Ultra X Wales 50km yesterday, physically it was very hard as we went up three mountains (1830m to total elevation) i would say it is more mental than physical as i never prepared and i completed my first one, i am 61. if anyone wants to do an ultra they will complete it, preferably do some training 😅
Fantastic job Jen, great content as always, I’m always interested in the impact of these events. No one ever shows the days following and how you get your body right again. I think that’s just as interesting especially to those who haven’t run or exercised to that extreme.
Most people I know, who have a decent level of fitness, are sore for a day or two, then are just a little tired, if that, for the rest of the week. We're often raring to go and feeling fine within a week, though we know our body might need a little more rest. I've only done 50ks, and if I do one every 6 weeks or so, with light training in between, I feel great, have fun, stay injury free, and my life isn't completely taken over by training/ tapering/ recovery.
Ha, me and my wife were the fans who drove past at 17:03. We were too lazy to walk to the pub, so not sure we could cast any judgement. Sad to miss Nixon 🐶
I found out the hard way of not getting things right before a run. Didn't take enough salt tablets on my first marathon recently. Cue a rather warm day and intermittent, painful cramp for the final 12 miles!!! Lesson learnt!
I would’ve been on the start line with you both mark, but post Leeds marathon injury scuppered my training. So I’ll be there 2024. Am thinking about the London to Brighton 100k next May though. Thanks, as always, for the inspiration and entertainment 👍👍
Awesome! Congrats on the 17KM trail run, and your new found attitude to try new things. 💪

By "no training", you do not mean no training, do you?
Jen absolutely trained. She just was not in a shape to know this would be an easy achievement.
I’m so inspired to push and challenge myself with longer runs. Thanks Mark and Jenn. And congrats to Jen for pushing to the finish line 🎉
He's got a lot to answer for😂
I started running last year, 3 half marathons before the year was out, 20 mile mountain run in April and finished my first marathon/ultra last month with a 50k trail... enjoy the journey💪
You've got this!! Have fun on the journey!
Cycling is much easier on the body!
Wow the scenery is spectacular. Congrats Jen!
All the very best with it! 💪
13:45 A cool car drives by. Also great job by Jen. I don't really like running but that could be me not running with proper technique. My poison anyway is cycling.
🤗Congratulations Jen! Great effort👏👍 I have learnt a new word ‘Ultra Jogger’! Thanks guys keep motivating us🤗
Congrats Jenna, that’s a great achievement. There’s plenty of great advice in here for folks doing any sort of endurance event.
Congratulations Jen, brilliant effort, the secret is just keep moving, one step at a time.
These are such a pleasure to watch. Plenty to learn while chuckling along. Thanks!
I think I need to swap my training. I run, I love running. Trail runs are my happy place. I have done up to half marathons. But I am slow! A 50km ultra is where I would love to be but my half marathon time is 3:45 so I can't make any cut offs at the moment 😭 one day though!💪
Well done Jen and Mark this is a brilliant video. You both smashed it, big inspiration 🙌
An absolutely tremendous open. The intelligent comedy is just flowing. I love it!
Well done Jen great effort 👍
Love it. Great vid. I’ll get around to paying for it on patreon at some point honest!
This was more exiting than Guardians 3 - watched it yesterday. This was better. - Great job, Jen. I knew you were going to finish.
Been through that journey!! Good luck with the rest of your training. See on the start line in September 👍
I completed a 21k beast Spartan last year and am training for my first Spartan 50k Ultra coming up. Thanks for the inspiration!
Jen, what a champ. Been a firefighter for 30 years and i would never been able to complete in this race 💪.
Congrats Jen, you did a brilliant job! Love how you are constantly testing your limits 💪
Thanks for sharing the journey. It's quite motivational for someone who is trying to increase their running distances!
Great video, I love the breakdowns you give at certain points on runs like this!
That's a lot of climb. 😳 Awesome stuff! 💪
Jen, you are our queen. Pop off! Congratulations!!
I really enjoyed your video…entirely humorous and educational. Now a subscriber. Hoping to do a half marathon in Paris in a couple of months. After that a 25k in California in the Sierras. Thanks much.
Well done Jenna. Great work!
Jen and Mark, you two are absolute beasts!
Well done Jenna. Great work!. Awesome, amazing effort from Jen..
1) well done Jen!!
2) Nice to see you donning your ultra marathon uniform again Mark 😂
Awesome to watch and seriously impressive!
Can I ask what pack you're using? I'm a similar build to you, and struggling to find one that I can run in wearing a vest and not rub between arms/ribcage.
Thanks, Sam
Yo what's up Mark, you and Jen are awesome 💖
@@Will-it1px wtf
@@Drzzlthe kind of has a point.
Well done both, Jen for getting that 50km under your belt and Mark for biting your tongue at the end 😅
Cant wait for the 100km! Nervous as well because its a terrifying distance and 42 feels strenuous enough!
Really inspiring! Well done Jen! 👏
Hot dang Jen! Congrats! This has been a fun journey getting to this point, from a spectators' point of view! Can't wait to see how the 100k turns out, even if she only runs the 50k, what an accomplishment in such a short time!
Just stumbled across your channel. Great vids. Got my 2nd 50km next year so hoping to improve. Subscribed 😊
Thank you Mark! Congrats Jen!
Hi Mark/Jen, what was the race you did in the snow that features as highlights in this video? Thanks for the content as usual.
Awesome, amazing effort from Jen.
And always get great enjoyment from "Stupid!" 😄 🤣 2:16
This video has just dropped at the right time for me (or not) my colleague has just had to pull out of the ultra X Wales 50k (up/down Cadair Idris total 1830 m elevation). So, having always wanted to do an ultra, I took his place (three weeks' notice). The furthest I have run this year is 10k! I must be mad, but let's see how my body and mind cope! I ran my first marathon 43 years ago without any training and have not run a marathon for 42 years since I hit the wall. Thanks for the tips, I have also got my precision hydration and nutrition ready, slow and steady is my plan.
Would be interested to know how you get on. Good luck 😄
Fuel, electrolytes and grin and bear it. And LUBE
@@TrickyMicky123456 thanks i will post on here if i make it 🥵
@@MarkLewisfitness yes ive got the lube 😅
Jen did comment that Nixon would be ashamed we were spotted not running. 🤣He will be back at events later this year when it's cooled off. 😊
I found out the hard way of not getting things right before a run. Didn't take enough salt tablets on my first marathon recently. Cue a rather warm day and intermittent, painful cramp for the final 12 miles!!! Lesson learnt!
Well done Jen. That is a great achievement on what looked like a not totally lovely course.
I would’ve been on the start line with you both mark, but post Leeds marathon injury scuppered my training. So I’ll be there 2024. Am thinking about the London to Brighton 100k next May though.
Thanks, as always, for the inspiration and entertainment 👍👍
Way to go Jen!! Great channel Mark!
