    According to Singapore's law, the government can only purchase something if they have money on hand ( they can only take the money from the reserves if it is an exceptional situation like covid). Hence, they either save the money first and then announce big spending (like infrastructure, etc.) or, givenemnet, buy a small number at a time for weapons. Singapore is expected to purchase at least another 40 F-35s (A and B) over the next 5-6 years, each year 8-10. F-35B is for the so-called helicopter carrier JMMS, which is expected to be ready by 2030, and F-35A is for replacement for the current fleet of F-16s.

    I was in Singapore recently and man do they train hard. Vipers and Eagles dogfighting overhead most days. What a noise. It’s surreal seeing F-15’s coming into the break among the tall buildings and quite a shock when you aren’t used to it.

    • @wltan1791a
      @wltan1791a 6 місяців тому +10

      Lol, the dogfights don't really occur overhead. They typically fly to south china sea to do their actual training. Occasionally they do overhead patrol flights, but that's not the norm. They do make a lot of noise since the country is so tiny, and the airbases are near populated area. But yes, it's a culture shock if you're not used to staying near air bases. For plane spotters like me though, it's comparatively convenient.

    hey gonky! hey mover! big fan of the channel here from singapore. to answer the question regarding singapore's geopolitical stance, we try to stay as neutral as much as possible like the swiss, but as gonky has mentioned, since we're a small city state with limited resources, and as the saying goes, when the elephants do battle the ants perish, it is in our best interest to facilitate bilateral ties between big trade partners, especially taiwan and china because with more peace and stability in the region and globally, the better it is for us. as for the bling military hardware, the armed forces is primarily a deterrent measure, so the new F35s, though ready to go to war if the situation escalades to that point, are for the most part a FAFO flex.

      Visited your city in the 80s and loved it. I completely get the need to have a level of deterrence, as well as the ability to be a strong ally of wherever the geopolitical conflict (as opposed to an actual conflict) goes.
      From my time there, I know there is a demographic of Mandarin Chinese (and I suspect other Chinese ethnicities), but all that I encountered were vehemently anti-Maoist.

    Singapore maintains close relations to Taiwan even sending troops there to train. But Singapore will not intervene in a taiwan war scenario, the most we could do is to be the logistical hub for US coalition forces.

    And they bought the better model this time! I thought it was a mistake for them to buy the B-model at first. And having lived there for some years, I can safely say that the additional utility/austerity that the B-model brings would've been wasted in Singapore. The roads are too small and littered with fod for the STOVL abilities of the B to be used, and the reduced operational costs for the A relative to the B will definitely go a long way for a country like Singapore. That, and the training costs will be vastly reduced too since Singapore fixed-wing pilots have no experience with STOVL/VTOL aircraft. Glad to see that they made the right decision in the end and are buying the better platform(for Singapore's needs).

    • @mimimimeow
      @mimimimeow 6 місяців тому +4

      From what I understand the B is treated like a strategic air asset. It's not going to sit anywhere near runways or any long stretch of road liable from first strikes. It's partly necessary because Singapore has no strategic depth at all.

    • @user-yb1wt2mq8c
      @user-yb1wt2mq8c 6 місяців тому

      "And they bought the better model this time! I thought it was a mistake for them to buy the B-model at first."
      Singapore is too small and there are only so many runways available for the air force. It doesn't take much to locate all the runways within the country. Just like what mimimimeow said, it's treated as a strategic asset as well and makes it less obvious where it will take off from.
      While you had lived in Singapore for some years, you may had missed the times when the RSAF block of certain public roads to become a make shift runway [to be fair, they don't do it that often, I can remember at least 2-3 times]. The F16 definitely took off from there [can't remember if they tried landing on one] and maybe [can't remember] even the F15SG did.
      While I understand Singapore's purchase of the F35Bs, I was surprised they did not buy the A models together. Even after going to Australia [a couple of years back?] for an exercise with a closer look at both As and Bs, Singapore activated the option to buy 8 more which are B models as well. I was hoping they would get some A models during then. Finally the "3rd round/purchase" did it.

    • @ypw510
      @ypw510 6 місяців тому

      It’s my understanding that their concern was the possibility that runways might be cratered by an attack on their airfields. They probably can’t use roads, which would be damaged by the downward jet blast, but could still do a short takeoff with a full load in less than 1000 ft of available runway.

    • @mimimimeow
      @mimimimeow 6 місяців тому

      @@user-yb1wt2mq8c They probably realized the value of the A model after realizing that Malaysia or Indonesia is very unlikely to pick fights with them anymore, most of the old guards are going to leave the world soon. Plus Malaysia is likely getting the A model in the next 10 years too, they took part in F-35 Pitch Black operations so FPDA commonality is another value.

      @@mimimimeow "They probably realized the value of the A model ...... "
      Hehehe, I certainly hope both those countries finally give up on picking a fight with Singapore. Unfortunately every now and then, the neighbour up north will find something to pick about, In 2018, Ex-PM Mahathir got his seat back, soon after took some "old map" and said certain parts of the Singapore seas belongs to Malaysia "since the olden times" [similar trick China pulled with SCS]. Then went on and park a ship in said waters for months.
      While the other in 2014, named a corvette warship as KRI Usman-Harun, the 2 terrorist of MacDonald House bombing, which they consider their heroes. Singapore protested but nothing was changed.
      Hopefully when those old guard leave, ASEAN will be even more peaceful.
      I wouldn't be holding my breath on Malaysia getting F35As within 10 years since it's been a rather common case where either Msia couldn't fully pay the amount due to varies reasons or some other issue comes up and the purchase is cancelled. I think 1 of the more recent case was with some navy ships or something, Offshore Patrol Vessel? Ordered 3 but only got 1 after long delays. Full payment was delayed [?] but finally paid, though the 2 other ships were still no where close. Forgot most of the details but was something about getting all 3 by certain year, few years after said year, only got 1, which was 1 of the reason the news of it blew up.

      True, Indonesia as well.
      But China's actions in the SCS ain't "good for business" for Singapore as well. Like Gonky and Mover mentioned, Singapore need those trades moving, so if there's a war, big conflict or blockage in the SCS, Singapore will get hugely affected.
      Singapore's stance is still more defensive and "friends with everyone".

      Maybe you don't live in Singapore [SG] or don't live long enough there. Go ask the older locals. Generally speaking, the citizens of both countries are fine with each other, it's mainly the gov of Malaysia [Msia] that loves to look for trouble with SG, especially when they have an election or soon after that.
      There is a saying in SG that the other gov is using SG to distract their citizens from all their domestic issues. What's better to unite the people with a common "enemy". Cutting water to SG is 1 of the more common "policy" that pops up every once in a while.
      SG maintains being friendly with all countries as it's a tiny country and it's unable to change that apart from gaining land by war, but the cost will be too great to bear.
      On the other side of things, 1 of the minister said to both Msia and SG that they should have thank them for "providing fresh air" throughout the year and not complain about the Haze caused by burning of forest every few years.
      During the start of SG, the local gov were VERY careful with those who sides with communist. "Businessman Philip Chan designated politically significant person under S’pore’s foreign interference law".
      So even in the present day, SG is being cautious with any threats from outside.

      Realistically it’s more for the stealth tech that the F35 offers, while yes they definitely have lesser fuel capacity, it still enhances the RSAF’s strike first capabilities behind potential enemy lines. Another point is that SG already possesses the f15 eagle which is comparable to the gripen and Rafael.
