SEAL Team 6 Operator Remembers His First Kill

  • Eddie said he cannot remember every kill, but he remembers his first. In his book Unafraid, in a chapter titled "Kill Addict", he said that later the killing became so routine that they progressed towards increasingly difficult means to keep it interesting. When shooting bad guys with a rifle got old, he relished the opportunity to justifiably use a pistol or even a knife when the situation permitted.

Former Sgt Major here, I can definitely relate and understand what he says. The first time somebody opened fire upon me, the first emotion in me was panic, but then in just a matter of seconds that panic turns into anger and you start becoming colder and colder, and you just want more. It would sometimes come back me when we were back in base and starting "decompressing", but in that moment you just want to get one more and then one more and so on.

So I'll be honest, our collective 'first reaction' or emotion was giggling...
When I first deployed in 2006 to Afghanistan, the first time my section came under fire - we all sprinted for whatever cover we could find. I panicked a bit, but felt I had my wits about me...and started to glance around to make sure nobody was hit.
I'm not sure why, but one of the lads was giggling a bit, which instantly got me giggling a bit too. Before ya know it, we were all giggling for a few moments while trying to figure out where the shooters were...
Figured it out, returned fire, and THEN that hyper-focused, angry feeling took over where you just wanted to drop each & every one of them.
      But at first? Giggles 🤷‍♂️

@Mr Popeye It's so true. One thing I really appreciate about the SRS, is vets can come together in the comment section & other vets read it, and 'get it'
I remember that similar feeling, like my brain was firing on all cylinders & processing at 100% - and you're right, everything seems like it slows right down.
I don't know about you, but I remember the oddest details & forget the oddest of things also.

Most people in these comments are civilians in assuming based on the verbiage and angle being taken. From experience taking a life isn’t anything to gloat about, when people do it’s because they’re so embedded into a culture like warfighters in any capacity (marines, infantry, seals, green berets, rangers) it’s glazed over, not until you’re removed from that smothering culture does it start to haunt you. It hit me literally within a few weeks of being out, like a million fucking bricks, PTSD, TBI, couldn’t sleep, nightmares, cold sweats, violent tendencies etc…so no one enjoys killing, taking out bad guys is a way to convince yourself and others it’s alright or “cool” but it isn’t, unless you’re completely insane or don’t have remorse. I understand and relate to the feeling of jealousy when your friends are someone else is in contact I used to chase down gunfights and take any opportunity to go after the bad guys, I’d go in every BSHO I could to get off the base. I loved and craved the fighting but it’s only because of the culture. No one’s doing it on their own, no one’s going rogue it’s all about the culture.

Appreciate your comment. What’s your opinion on Eddie talking about it the way he does. Isn’t it sending a weird message to potential recruits? That it’s a big deal, when in fact you get ptsd from this kind of things?

    • @TacticalPAPA
      @TacticalPAPA Рік тому +21

@@TheAnytony I think I covered it in my post but I think he was caught up in the culture of the teams and SOF world, it’s what happened to me in the infantry world. It’s like a fraternity, recruiting wise it’s what sells people on it, but you will never get selected if you want to just kill people, you have to actually be a very capable individual… if people don’t know by now that if you go right and you happen to see some shit or have to take a life; you’re going to have issues idk..it’s so publicized now, it’s not like projected though so I do feel how he talks about it is one of two things, it’s a defense mechanism or bullshit, the third option is he actually has something wrong with him, which is possible. Killing, especially justified killing can become addicting but it’s something you don’t know you’re okay with until you do it, the affects don’t hit you until later when you aren’t busy, that’s what happened to me but it could be different for some. If it never bothers you than you have a bigger problem.

@Mako07 Maybe, but I’m sure you’re a civilian, who cannot relate or even begin to fathom what it takes to take a life especially in those circumstances. It takes relation and experience to understand the position he’s coming from. You can diagnosis it however you want from your perspective but it’s prob way off. Only he knows if he actually liked it or if it was something else.

And that is he was anxious, and excited for the ability to eliminate the enemy bc he knew they were killing his brothers in arms and other combatants but not in honorable “military” actions. Once you can wrap your mind around that ideology that the enemy you are fighting is killing your brothers in arms then all remorse or trepidation of killing is released from your psyche and you just know that your kills are saving your brother combatants lives. It’s simple…no in depth analysis, no moral dilemmas, no religious quandaries, no political ideals, just kill the enemy and your conscience is clear. This man is a national treasure and should be revered by all Americans!!! I thank you for your excellent service!!!

Its what soldiers are supposed to do just as long as its controlled focused violence against the real enemy, where as a psychopath kills for their own perverse sadistic pleasure.

The two things I'd wonder listening to this, and neither comes from a place of judgement, just sincere curiosity:
    1. Does that high come from the act of killing someone, regardless of who, or does it come from killing someone that you view as evil and deserving of death?
    2. He talked about when he realized how evil the person he'd killed was, it made him want to kill them that much more. Do you ever wonder if that train of thought is the same one those people you're killing experienced at some point? A belief that who you're fighting is so evil/wrong that no amount of harm would be undeserved would seem to be common to both parties.
Heard no shortage of podcasts with veterans but I think this is the first time I've actually heard someone talk about what it was like killing someone for the first time. Was very interesting. Thanks for sharing.

I've definitely heard decorated seals talking about how the people on the other side are often just born in the wrong place at the wrong time. this doesn't apply as much to something like the torture video he is talking about, but its similar. I think it was Dakota Myer but im not sure.

Seems like the high came from the satisfaction of a principle of justice as he saw it, like "I've truly made the world a better place" which is a universal longing. For him it's simply expressed in a job-specific way.

To your second point I absolutely think that is in play for every fighter. If you took the rulebook away, this guy would be just as willing to do to his enemy what his enemy was doing to the contractors. That’s what “killing harder” means. It means torture. He’s just not gonna say it.

It’s crazy how we look at him as a hero and if someone else from a different country said the same thing about killing someone from the USA we would say they’re terrorist and they’re going to hell. This guy is sick

I tell you what I’ve me some true sociopaths in my time. I had one guy in my section who always use to watch very gruesome videos all the time a laugh at them. I remember thinking to myself ‘if this guy wasn’t here doing this he’d probably be a serial Keller somewhere’

Wow dude! Now to me, that's highly disturbing! It Beggs the question, how many true psychopaths the military has in its ranks. Then what? After he leaves the military? Is this when the thought crosses the mind of " friendly fire"? Iam sure it must cross the mind...

@@jeanetteseaman1297 I think the Army successfully indoctrinates people as protectors, so he is trained and programmed to have a savior complex and not follow illegal orders for instance . It’s highly on unlikely he would harm anyone after years of this.

It’s the quiet people that DON’T talk about killing that are more frightening. I remember when nobody used to really talk about that siht that they did on missions. Now it seems to be the chic thing to do on all of the social media platforms. Darn shame.
