  • This is an amazing interview with Frances Flaherty about her late husband, and the interviewer is none other than Robert Gardner. This is a great resource for understanding the early days of documentary/ethnographic film. Some topics include Flaherty's approach to documenting culture and the similarities and differences between theatrical and documentary film. Not sure of the date here, but Frances Flaherty died in 1951, so it must have been in the late 1940s when this was filmed, but the medium of television didn't really take off until the early 1950s. When I track down the date, I will revise this description.

I found that Frances didn't die until 1972 (born 1883 - Robert (Flaherty) died in 1951) and the interview is from 1957.

It's possible she wrote it before hand and couldn't memorize it without cards.

You would'nt be surprised if you had read your Marshall McLuhan -- and if your going going to comment about film you could start with "Understanding Media."
