Vsauce2's Short Film ► bit.ly/1S5ZOay
Alaska is a place filled with beautiful views, and harsh and unreachable places. But Whittier, Alaska, may take the cake. The only way to reach this small city by land is a long, claustrophobic drive through a mountain. Michael Stevens, the creator of Vsauce, takes his incredible thirst for knowledge to Alaska to find out why this city chooses to make this remote location their home… and why they all live in a single building.
Field Day is a place to meet and see the platform’s most inspired filmmakers, dynamic entertainers, and exciting personalities. Each week, one of these inspired creators tries something new and creates their own unique, imaginative, dream video. Whether they’re investigating far-off places, dancing with remote control cars, or stunt flying with Star Fox, you won’t want to miss these creators #HaveAFieldDay

Fun fact: it's overcast in Whittier, Alaska more than 80% of the year. Cloudy days are SO COMMON in Whittier, in fact, that residents simply call sunshine "cloud failure."
Vsauce you are my hero michael
Vsauce That's what we say in Wales too XD
Amazing! I gotta visit Whittier one day!
Vsauce They could band together with Seattle to create a new hashtag!
Vsauce I read that just like you would have pronounced it in one of your videos
'They get into the fudge room'
'What's the fudge room?'
'It's where the fudge lady makes her fudge.'
+Athenic Cuber We loved that line. It was like "Duh, where she makes her fudge, obviously"
When he said fudge room I thought he meant fudge as in f*ck. Kind of like the oh-shit-bar in a vehicle. I thought maybe it was an underground room of some sort in case things go wrong. That might be what he thought too.
Those fudging bears tryin' steal our fudge!
So I can safely enjoy fudge while the zombie apocalypse goes down? Road trip to Alaska if it happens then and hope you make it :D
I thought he said 'fledge'
Places to hide out in case of zombie apocalypse: #97312 Whittier, Alaska. Duly noted.
Roy Batty What's hideout #97311?
Roy Batty Also doubles as the last place to have a fudge room in an Apocalypse.
Roy Batty Good luck getting through the bomb proof doors...
RougeSamurai77 use a boat instead of car.
***** what the actual fuck is that profile pic.
I never knew I needed a fudge room until now...
It's called a bathroom, Luke.
Thank you ladies and gentlemen and goodnight.
Trevor Smith Yummmy
Trevor Smith how dare you crush my dreams! RRR... I mean his dreams.
Sounds like a good idea. Maybe too good.
"I saw a vending machine downstairs that'll make you a Hot Pocket"

"the trend and style of these comments caught on to an annoying degree"

You should see what he's said now...
is heaven just one building?
2:19 "apocalyptic event, a virus outbreak..."
Me, in 2020 quarantine: >_
Ive been to whittier just last week, its open, and it's quite fun
Turns out even Whittier wasn’t safe
slate.com/human-interest/2020/08/whittier-alaska-coronavirus-cases-begich-towers.html
vmp916 shit if I were them I would just let everyone get it so they can all be immune again
There's a 19 in Covid-19 for a reason.
Thanks for all the great questions!! You guys are awesome. BONUS: Action Movie Kid is now answering questions on his Field Day video right over here: bit.ly/1FIabB4 THANKS FOR WATCHING!!
LOOKING GOOD MICHAEL
Vsauce Thanks for coming out and answering all these amazing questions!! You're the best!
Andrew Legend thanks :)
Vsauce Love all your videos Michael!
I always look forward to vsauce- please do more!
"If there's an apocalyptic virus" god I miss life before late 2019
yo i was just thinking this and i wonder if they closed the tunnel for a couple months during the spike of Covid cases
I wonder if there r ever suicides in Whittier... then again you wouldn't need to top urself there as ur already leading the life of a zombie
word I miss all of it
Spring 2020***
except covid wasn’t apocalyptic
"Thats where the Fudge Lady makes all our fudge"
This place is beautiful, went there in June. Went for a walk straight up a mountain from the camp area, ended up gone for 7 hours without realizing it. Climbed to the top of the mountain ridge there till the cruise ship in port looked tiny. Didn't see a single person the entire time up, pure beautiful magic.
+Jessica mcnallie That sounds amazing!
+Jessica mcnallie I just found out about this from Thoughty2 and have already mentally packed my bags and moved!
dayum
i wish you would have spoken to some of the residents...especially the fudge lady
Bea Overton He was speaking to residents for almost the whole video. Sadly no fudge lady though.
QwertyuiopThePie I don't mean people who are in charge of security, I mean just regular people in the city, especially the fudge lady. Like shop owners. And I would have liked to see what the homes look like on the inside.
But he did. Only a couple of those people were in security.
"If there were some sort of apocalyptic event, a virus outbreak..."
oh dear
I can tell this channel is going to skyrocket very soon... :D
***** Keep coming back! We've got a lot of amazing videos in the works!
Field Day Invite me m8.
Field Day going to sub cos of vsauce lol but still better than my channel
Danny-Elite Yes ofc, your channel is garbage.
MaZ2718 Ikr (cries internally)
that animation google earth like was ON POINT!
I actually live there and he came to my school
Jarom Sosa well I do and I don't have to prove it jerk
Prove it
Jarom Sosa the BTI has 14 floors but there is no 13th floor he doesn't say that but it is true but you wouldn't know cause you dont live there and I do plus there is a school behind the BTI so shut up
I don't mean to be rude. I just want to hear from a real habitant from Whittier how it is to live there (it's a whole new world for me, and surley, a very interesting one!)
What do you mean by there is no 13th floor? I just read from a blogger that the 13th floor houses (in part) the June's Vacation Condo Suites www.outsideonline.com/1840326/would-you-be-could-you-be-wont-you-be-and-why-hell-does-anyone-want-be-my-neighbor (3rd paragraph)
Jarom Sosa oh.....ok....awkward
I went to Whittier last summer, and it seemed very friendly and a lot smaller than you'd think (just a few blocks). Everyone seemed relatively happy and they served great coffee.
LMAO the best bit 5:25
".....it got into the fudge room..."
"What's the fudge room?"
"That's where the Fudge Lady makes all our fudge"
Of course that's what it is, Michael.
It's where the Fudge Lady makes all their fudge.
Bet you feel silly now hey?
Ive actually traveled to Alaska and we went and saw this place and tried their fudge
Ben Unnerstall Cool!! did you meet the fudge lady?
BobSkiz1 no but the lady who sold the fudge said she only lived their in the summer. It was actually a very interesting place it had a couple restaurants, an ice cream parlor, and beautiful scenery
Ben Unnerstall Nice, I'm envious. Would love to visit Alaska.
Ben Unnerstall How was the fudge?
I never would've searched for,or watched this type of video without being pointed to it (thanks Michael). Hiwever, it was really great! So many questions. Electricity? Water?Medical services? Where does everyone work?
Andy Jones I believe it pointed out that the people run their own businesses out of the building. To me it kind of seems like a city confined to a single building. It would be a really cool experience.
Combustible Lemon seems opposite of "a nice place to visit but I wouldn't want to live there". Probably not much to do visiting but I'll bet the residents all know each other, almost 0 crime, and a great sense of community. It seems like the kind of place where you don't ever lock your door. Heck, I wonder if they even have police!
I think it said they had police, but I imagine they don't have much to do seeing as how everyone probably knows each other. I kinda wanna live there. It's a place where you can live life the way you see fit.
Andy Jones You should check out the 2015 series 'Fortitude'.
Andy Jones There is a clinic in the same building where everyone lives. Yes there is a police force and a school, electricity, city water and sewer. It isn't the end of the earth (but sometimes it feels that way). It is only an hour and a half from Anchorage. And....few people actually work there, and those that do work for the government, the city of Whittier or in tourism during the summer. The tourist industry is very lucrative during the summer months (there are quite a few cruise boats that embark from Whittier for Glacier tours). But, the winter and the winds are pretty unforgiving. The worst night in my life was in November, spent on the 15th floor of the Begich Tower, with 80+mph howling winds gusting to 125mph. Yipes...and BRRRR!
“If there was some sort of apocalyptic event….or a virus outbreak…..you guys would keep Whittier safe.” Hits different now.
So f**** true.
Vsauce - You're the first channel I ever subscribed to on UA-cam. You really made me realize how valuable the medium could be as an educational platform. Has your success allowed you more help on the production side so you're more free to just "wander and wonder" - or do you prefer staying pretty hands-on?
Action Movie Kid Oh hi Action Movie Kid!! I've been able to get help with editing and occasionally production. I'm still very hands-on, but things look better now that I have help :) (like, say, the person holding the camera in my recent video). Usually I just have a camera on a tripod that's close enough to me that I can press record without moving out of focus lol.
It's so cool to talk to you! Do you travel for the purpose of specific shows, or are you able to create and find stories wherever you decide to travel?
Action Movie Kid usually I find things in the places I travel to for shows/conferences/etc. Whittier was actually the first place I visited purely to explore and document.
+Vsauce +Vsauce Come to the Faroe Islands, isolation from the rest of the world, but civilised people :)
@@Vsauce hiiii
I would've watched an hour long documentary on this place, it's so cool it felt like it was over long before it should've been.
5:27 That's where the fudge lady makes all her fudge.
That had me die with laughter!
Bean Dar You're here too e.e
MiseryPwnsYou I assume you're a sheep.
Yes.
MiseryPwnsYou hahaha well hello!
I Live in wasilla and go to Whittier often for boating trips
The othe of building is abandoned and has huge tunnels underground going around the city
Michael Stevens,
I wish you were my professor.
+Dante Haughton RIGHT?!
This made me cry , The music , the atmosphere , and Michael seems like such a spiritual man .
That place looks so peaceful.
Mind blowing video! Hopefully everything goes well with the people who lives in there.
2:19 That one didn't age quite so well
-JonTron
Google earth actually has street view there
EvlMagus Pretty unbelievable when you think about it!
My buddy owned an apartment in that tower. Got to stay there for a weekend when he was out of town. Sat back, drank some beers and watched the cruise ship come in and dock. Quite the weekend.
JBER?
I came here specifically to give this video a *"looky-look"*.
Thanks for taking us Michael. I loved it! I hope you make some more field trips to unique locations like this. See you soon on Vsauce :)
Hey Michael and everyone at Vsauce!!! Great job!! Love the video!! Whittier is a wonderful place to call home. Thank you so much for taking time out of your busy visit to come chat with the students at the school. YOU ROCK!!
Erika Thompson Glad you enjoyed the visit! Michael loved the trip!
I have actually been to Whittier with my Dad once. We went in the dead of winter and I remember thinking how the hell people could live in such a remote place. And my god that tunnel is really long! They have it set to where there is 20 minutes of traffic one way, then 20 minutes of traffic the other way because it is only wide enough for one lane. Great video!
Michael Stevens, I love you. You've inspired me to pursue Neuropsychology from my Bachelor's in Neuroscience and I've watched all of your videos about 4 times each. I don't really care for celebrities, but watch out if I ever see you on the street.
Keep doing all that you do,
John
John Jarvis That's awesome, John! Thanks for watching :)
+Vsauce 💙
I would love to see Vsauce in more of this format of video. Thank you for the mini doc. Brilliant. Beautiful
I was in Switzerland recently up in the Alps and found this quaint little village nested in a valley by a lake with spectacular views and they built a massive in-door rifle range but not where you would think, they put it in the wall of a few billion tons of granite overlooking the town. Why? Because they can!! They didn't have the excuse that drove the establishment of Whittier, they just didn't seem to be able to agree so they put a 300m and 150m rifle/pistol range and a shooting cinema as they call it. They might not have moved as much rock as Whittier but they did it for far less reason :-) People are just amazing
you'l think of the swiss differently once you see octogon empire of darkness
Whittier used to be my home❤️ I've lived there for 10 years and then moved back to Seattle. I was there when to meet Vsause when he came to our school. I sure do miss it😫
“A virus outbreak....” well we now know who currently has their doors closed
Nah theyre open, i went last week
Welp they now got confirmed covid cases there too
I live in alaska and have been to Whittier many times. I go to valdez which is a 6 hour drive from anchorage or a 3 hour ferry from Whittier. Its really.... magical to go through the tunnel.
"Virus outbreak" called it
The proof of existence gravitational waves at 2:10
The walls of the tunnel are wobbling. Don't you see?
+xGMRxSHADOWx It is a pun, man!
This town is the coolest.
Kyle Wagoner I lived there for 4 months when I was like 7 and it was awful
Best place to be during COVID-19
It's official; I'm moving to Whittier.
Elijah Wilkerson don't. you'll feel trapped
I really enjoy the way Michael speaks. The way he emphasizes everything he says makes the video seem interesting and the topics even more so. Good job Michael! :D
Inspiring ending.
This has got to be one of the greatest UA-cam channels I've ever seen!
This reminds me of how I build my forts in Dwarf Fortress.
HA!
i spent my childhood in anchorage. i loved the trips to whittier we would take. that drive through the mountain was such a trip.
This building gives me Tiny Tower vibes...
michael please do more of these type of videos.i hope one day i'll go to whittier,Alaska.
5:27 "What's a fudge room?" HAHAHA where they make fudge, duh. LOLOL. JK Michael. I love your videos.
Me and my wife live in Wasilla, AK, and we in the valley or in Anchorage often have to go down to Whittier to get on a Ferry if we want to go to Juneau, Sitka, etc. The scenic highway is beautiful!
I worked on a cruise ship twenty years ago and every week we stopped at whitter. Fantastic place and fantastic people.
“if there was some sort of apocalyptic event ... a virus outbreak ...”
@@nayeahnahnahye yeah well, the tunnel is open and i went there last week, drove from anchorage
Rowley Jefferson oof
This is the kinda place I would like to live in. The feeling of solitude is just overwhelming, can feel it just by watching the vid. Wow, you live this life and there's still places or other stuff that can surprise you.
Did you see any of the other buildings there?
Jefferson McGough Yes. There are restaurants and an inn and buildings for holding boats
Were the buildings old or new? Also, it's really cool seeing such a popular UA-camr replying to comments. Thanks for doing this!
Jefferson McGough Glad you enjoying it! Michael is the best!! If you want more, Action Movie Kid will be commenting at 11AM and MatPat from The Game Theory will be commenting at 12pm on their Field Day videos!
Field Day Thanks for doing this! I never thought I'd be able to talk to a person like Michael. :)
Jefferson McGough It's been out pleasure working with him and meeting all of you!
whittier is one of my favourite places in alaska! the sighs are beautiful, in my eyes.
I live in AK... and close to wittier. There are truly isolated places in AK, and wittier is not one of them. Think of it as more of a gated community, just outside of the most populated place in Alaska. Its cool and all, but in and out is easy and walmart and any modern amenity
is just a short skip away in the big city. Its easy as just driving through the tunnel. In a state of wild inaccessible places...... wittier is an easy, paved accessible town, a nice hour ride from the largest population in the state.... all these UA-cam vids make it seem like its at the end of the world. For us.... its a great place to drive down and launch your boat from..... far from "isolated"..... you just start your car and drive there.
Yeah I live in Anchorage and it's not exactly isolated, Nome is isolated, Diomede is extremely isolated, oh and our other city Seattle 🤣
i know this comment is old but id like to say that comparing to living in a densely packed place in east asia, it certainly seems intimidating and isolated for me :o
I use to live in Alaska. Anchorage to be exact. I remember going on a family road trip. Bought a bunch of fishing gears and we headed out to this beautiful place. How I miss this view. Only memories now.
There IS a post-apocalyptical movie to make arround this place.
Imagine the war everywhere, this place sealed to avoid it, and governments trying to dig the mountain to get inside !
A bit like 2012, but it could be insanely good.
Raphaël Pyrat It was a bit amazing. Seems like there is no other way out. By ferry, helicopter or through the claustrophobic freaking tunnel.
You know though!?, is that one building where everyone lives in. I mean, they got school for their children in there. They don't have to leave the premises.. Just imagine growing up in that sort of environment.
Check out high rise on hulu! This town reminds me of the movie! They all live in one building similar to this!
I find it hilarious when people ask questions about Whittier. I've lived in Anchorage, Alaska my whole life. We used to visit Whittier all the time, there are glacier tours by boat that take you up close to the glacier. There are humpback whales, sea otters, seals and an abundance of birds. There is a hotel there that people go to called anchor inn. That is also a pretty good restaurant. It's fun if you are only going there temporarily, otherwise the winds and constant moist air get on your nerves.
“Virus outbreak” 👁👄👁
I stayed here for 3 days last Summer when I was working on a tender boat. We had to tie up for a few days while we had repairs done on an engine. It rained the majority of the time - I definitely know what you mean about claustrophobia! We did drive to Anchorage a few times though. The area is beautiful, and really the whole state of AK is.
Whittier seems to demonstrate the "Fuck off, circumstance, this is OUR turf!" attitude of humanity better than Pacific Rim ever did
I've lived in Minnesota most of my life, and my family and I recently moved to Arizona. I miss the snowy hills in the winter so dearly, and my fond memories of skiing with my closest friends. Seeing those hills really gave me the feels. Great cinematography, and hey, its freaking Michael Stevens! How awesome is that?!
Vsause/Michael you are amazing! Just thought I'd say!!!
Laura C thanks ;p
I wouldn't mind if there was a channel about Micheal just traveling to interesting places. I would totally watch that.
***** Glad you loved him getting out there!
I live in a Whittier too, but not in Alaska.
I live in an Alaska, but not in a Whittier.

Obed Baltodano Dude I live in Fullerton
Michael, make a feature documentary already... I can watch whatever it you're spilling for hours. Thank you field Day for providing it... Going to watch some other of your vids
I had an odd feeling while watching the video until the feeling of claustrophobia was brought up, I then realized I was feeling claustrophobic just by watching the video. Awesome place, maybe just not for me.
Joshvictus Go see a doctor about that.
I wish this was a longer video. Whittier seems like an amazing place. I'd love to be able to learn more about it and how they do things there
Perfect city for the apocalypse!
I just came back from an Alaska cruise and whittier was the last stop, we're we would get shuttled to Anchorage or go to tours from there. I saw this video first but didn't put it together until I saw the tunnel and had to wait for our side to open! Very cool experience being in Whittier. Hopefully cruise ships loading/unloading there will help them out in the summer with tourism.
Hey Vsauce , Davie here. Loved the documentary style on this video. Would you ever consider branching off into this kind of area in the future? It seemed as though you enjoy having that increased freedom away from your usual approach.
***** I would love to do more exploratory / documentary style stuff in the future. I learned a lot by making this one and have since started a list of topics and places I'd like to explore next. Always with a focus on the tech/science/mind-blows waiting there, of course.
That's very cool to hear. Best of luck to Field Day Great concept for a channel.
My grandfather was born in Whittier before Begich Towers was built, and lived in the trailer park that was there. He has pictures of when his family would have to tunnel their way out of the house because the snow was so deep. And every morning the military would fire off a howitzer cannon at 7:00 directly next to his trailer. Then walk across the street to school.
How did 'Whittier' get its name?
zeeotter100 It's named after the glacier that sits above the town (Whittier Glacier) which is named after the poet John Greenleaf Whittier who wrote the famous line, "For all sad words of tongue and pen, The saddest are these, 'It might have been'."
Vsauce Thats an amazing line. "For all sad words of tongue and pen, The saddest are these, 'It might have been'." as a writer ( hobby ) that line i just cant see my self topping or even coming close to.
zeeotter100 look out, incoming Vsauce viewers (like myself ;-D )
zeeotter100 Because whoever designed this was Whittier than the others, and named it after him~~
Vsauce Wow I didn't expected my question to be answered by you! I appreciate your clear answer.
I miss Alaska so much. Being born there is a blessing to be there and a curse to go anywhere else
I love Whittier
omg, where do you live?
alaska
Thanks for the dedicated captions, I miss being able to watch these sort of docs on YT just because a lot don't have captions.
you think this is a weird home ? You have yet to see where I live in Minecraft !
Whittier's not _that_ remote. It's only an hour and a half drive from Anchorage, Alaska's largest city. It's a tourist destination. There's some nice restaurants down near the water.
Are tunnels so rare in the US? As a Swiss, they are as common to me as cellphones are. Sure, they're quite a technological achievement, but so are cellphones. And both are quite widespread here. Still, I'd admit the 17km long Gotthard tunnel is quite impressive.
joelproko I guess it's common for you because your country has lots of mountains. I bet Norway or other countries maybe have them too. But for the rest of the world it's pretty uncommon and very cool.
Wow what a amazingly edited video! Props!
This place would be perfect for an indie horror game
Currently watching this while in whittier!

Hearing about this town and imagining the people who live there gives me a pretty sharp jab of melancholy. I'm not sure why. Great video, Michael and gang
What's a fudge room?
A room where fudge is made
I really like videos like this. Hoping that as long as you're able to, you'll travel to these places that really just fall under the radar.
I want to live there
Wow, Michael! I'm so excited to see that you went to Whittier, Alaska! Should have gone during the summer, like how I visited just about 2 weeks ago. Alaska is a wonderful place, and it's especially beautiful in the summer, with most of it's snow gone, and it's actually warm!
Hey Michael, how did you get the idea for the name, Vsauce? I've really wanted to know. Vsauce
Android Man www.fakenamegenerator.com/
Vsauce Cool!
Vsauce I remember when you mentioned this on an OLD video! Thanks to you it's not just a fake word any more.
I admire Michael so much just because of his spirit of travel and sharing all of that with us
I know where to go in a zombie apocalypse!
This is inspiring. Thank you.
2:16 it's crazy how he mentioned about a virus outbreak and now in 2020 we're going through a terrible pandemic .
Omg. More videos like this. I especially like the beautiful video with Michael's voice over explaining it. It's very peaceful. I'm jealous of people that can explore and do things like this. I wish I could. Great video though.
Hey Michael, how's it going?!
Freakez It's going well! It's a three-day weekend here in the UK :)
I read a really cool article on this place not long ago. It's cool to see a little video about it. Absolutely fascinating.
