Political correctness may come from a good place, but it’s ultimately pernicious because it’s an attempt to control language while ignoring context. Policing language is counter-productive to changing minds. Comedy is supposed to push boundaries and make light of dark situations. It’s a normal and healthy coping mechanism for dealing with tragedy. Comedians change with the times naturally by gauging the crowd reaction. If a joke goes too far for the audience, they will know. It’s completely unnecessary to try to preemptively control what jokes can be said or punish a comedian for a bad joke based on subjective sensibilities. “If you try to please everyone, you will please no one.”
What an autistic fucking take on this topic. Please tell me you are too young to vote. Centrists like you have absolutely no idea of the nuances that control society. Comedy influences culture. Culture influences politics. Politics influences policy. Making jokes about trans people makes a joke out of their cause. It obfuscates a very real issue, and makes light of it. Why would you want to make light of this issue???? It is the height of privilege to be able to say “trans jokes are fine just stop being so triggered” while not seeing that its impact on that community.

But that quote has it exactly backwards: there is no right or wrong when it comes to laughing at a joke - only funny or unfunny. Are you going to try to tell me that, if I don't find your joke funny or your favorite comedian consistently funny that I'm objectively "wrong"? That I've violated logic somehow, or committed some morally unjustified act? If you're honest, and you actually have an operating sense of humor, you will have to admit that this is nonsense.
Furthermore, if you're not willing to apply this kind of honesty to every single individual case, then concocting some kind of pseudo-objective criticism of why I didn't laugh at your joke is a waste of time AT BEST, and an attempt at ideological control at worst.
The actual "problem" here (if it can even be looked at in that way) is one that all social institutions today are coming to grips with - that with the advent of the internet, people are less passive "objects" of mass communication and can more easily share their thoughts and feelings right back AS mass communication. I can see why comedians might see this as a possible problem - for THEM, but certainly not for the rest of us.
Transgressive comedy is often the type that we individuals find the most funny, but being transgressive always has its price, and more so when you're dealing with mass audiences. That's why its considered transgressive in the first place. Comedians can either adapt to this reality or quit, but I don't see any benefit for them to be lecturing us on what we should or should not be laughing at. Art is one of the last bastions of personal freedom left to us - and that goes for the performer AS WELL AS the audience.
If these comedians are having to concoct some political narrative about "audiences today" not appreciating their humor, then they are just trying to enforce a conformism that is anti-art itself, and is ultimately self-defeating. Perhaps with success and advancing age they have gotten complacent, and are having trouble upping their game in response. That's a human trait that we all understand, and it explains the current situation far better than yet another worn-out narrative about "cultural decay". If they can't deal with the consequences of being an artist... well, too bad. Nobody ever said that artistic talent alone makes you cut out for an artist's life.

Comedians adopt a serious stance at their professional peril, and they should be ready to take full responsibility when it backfires, as is vividly demonstrated in this spectacle of them attempting to shame their audience.

After all we're better controlled when we think in extremes. It's why as a Christian I strive to avoid the extremes associated with my religion, as I like being able to think for myself and learn from the world around me.

All the best comedians are philosophers...the best comedians are always very intelligent and creative. its easy to be serious about a serious subject, but to make a joke from it and crystallise a thesis into a few lines, AND be funny takes enormous intellect and talent...which is why only 10% of comedians are funny, except for female comedians, in which case only 1% are funny, and that's the ones who tell jokes like a man...

Absolutely, and the Comedy Channel show "Tough Crowd" hosted by Colin Quinn, which Patrice was a regular on, was a great comedy show that got shut down due to the gutless Comedy Channel not having the balls to let it stay on. Other great comedians from that show were Nick DiPoalo, Jim Norton and Greg Giraldo (RIP).

“Wop” was an acronym in post WW2 when massive immigration from Europe, and stood for “Without papers”. No clue though why is was particular to Italians tho.

Jason Corr right?! What is even the point of trying to book a comedian you view as politically incorrect, if you are going to effectively gag him? There are PLENTY of “mainstream” (PC enough for TV) comics that they could have chosen. It’s like hiring a tradesman but banning him from using tools. It’s dumb and was either pure entitlement to expect agreement from a comic, to those rules, or it was an ill thought out booking by someone who didn’t do their research.
You don’t want “edgy” comedy? Don’t book a comedian known for being edgy. It’s not difficult. Not everything is for everyone and that’s ok.
@@sparklywastaken1426 the strange part is we are living in a time where you can check out a comedians material before you pay to see them ( for example, on UA-cam or other internet avenues) and you can decide in advance whether you should go see them. Instead people go and act surprised, shocked and triggered.

Way, way off. Cleese is the perfect example of why this garbage survived past cocktail party blather. The concept that a “socioeconomic scale” can be intelligently developed to identify people who can’t defend themselves because of their “position within” it, is nonsense.
“Let’s not make mean jokes...” John’s comedy is evidence that jokes are funny when someone laughs. Simply because someone takes offense doesn’t quantify a joke as mean and erase the fact that someone else laughed.
If someone laughs at me, I’m not offended.
I find it offensive if someone tells the world that I’m unable to defend myself and that I can’t handle a joke. And how do I survive being offended? I decide to live past the emotional response of offense and refuse to make it the center of my universe.
First of all, congratulations on not being offended or upset when someone laughs at you. Bravo for not making it the center of your universe. But are you saying then that it's okay to get offended for other people who are being laughed at or made fun of? Because it seems to me that the psychology of empathy is a relatable understanding, and in order to understand relatably you have experienced something similar, that is, being laughed at and it hurt your feelings. Maybe you chose not to make it the center of your universe, but I'm willing to bet it still makes an impact emotionally, unless you are a sociopath. John Cleese never said anything about developing a "socioeconomic scale". He said there is one. Two different things. And, in fact there IS a socioeconomic scale that is measurable and quantifiable. Does it account for all the data? No. Is it still referenced culturally as a source of comedy? Yes. Absolutely. There are people less advantaged than others and it's obvious. Comedy points a finger and says "look at how absurd this is", and it's funny. Sometimes painfully so. Sometimes comedy is not comedy and becomes an attack. That's different. Being aware of the socioeconomic scale and referencing it does not mean that there needs to be a perfectly developed socioeconomic scale for perfectly developed referential comedy. And we are all on that scale and none of us are immune to being made fun of. Because true comedy is about absurdity and we are all absurd at one time or another. That's just a fact.

Empathy and compassion are admirable and useful qualities for individuals to strive for in all their encounters.
Generalized taboos on language and attempts to protect people from hearing things has never helped the weak become strong.
Giving a man a fish feeds him for one meal. Teaching the man to fish makes him his own provider.
Attempting to prevent the man from hearing the words “hunger” or “starvation” because it may hurt his feelings doesn’t put any food in his belly.
The idea that political correctness could have ever been anything other than a childish concept is a fail. I was warned back in the early ‘80s when the phrase first began to appear about what it would do to intelligent conversation and discourse.

Literally f you. The comment is about my favorite comedian dying the day my daughter was born. Its significant to me in that sense. I lost one person that was important to me on the day I welcomed my first and only child. In no way did I claim my kid was the only person born that day.

Bill Burr fights for free speech in a funny way, I highly respect Patrice as well, they don’t fight for jokes rather the ability to say what we want. In not a republican or right wing, or liberal...I say this because I’m just an American who believes we should be free with our tongues.
I agree with you Child of Oria and you raise an interesting point. People instantly label you liberal or conservative like that represents every school of thought. It doesn't. There's a huge canyon between those two extremes and I deal with this all the time. Liberals think I'm conservative and vice versa. It's freedom of speech. Anything short of defamatory language is fair game. Sticks and stones people, lighten up. You feel triggered, there's the door.
RIP Patrice. What makes me sad is all the comedy you would have given us if you lived today . So much material for you to use, sadly we will never hear it.
Comedy can break down barriers and provoke thought. That is a GOOD thing. A good comedian will bring you round to a different point of view and when you can accept different points of view, you grow and become tolerant to other views. That is better than any enforced political correctness in terms of encouraging tolerance.

I think one of the biggest problems in society is the way we label each other and ourselves. Dividing society into liberals and conservatives (and picking a side) is harmful to everyone. I think the most dangerous people are those who are extremist (extreme liberals or extreme conservatives).

The best joke in this whole presentation was the expression of understanding and agreement on Joy's face during Ricky Gervais' monologue on The View. The irony is classic! She didn't catch the fact that he is talking about rude, intolerant, self-important and ignorant people like her. He could do an entire routine on her.

In the UK the rehabilitation for saying anything deemed un PC was to have to make a public visit to the illegal migrant camp in Calais and demand that these people were allowed into the UK without actually having to make any kind of formal application to do so. An example of this was Benedict Cumberbatch when he spoke about there not being enough black people in showbusiness and this backfired on him for saying black rather than people of colour and he was shipped off to the camp in Calais to advocate something illegal as his means of repaying his debt to PC society for saying something which wasn't remotely illegal.

Unfortunately many modern comedians think they activists and political crusaders, but they're easy to spot, because they don't tell an actual jokes and they're never funny.
I heard a guy make a joke about asians. Me being asian i just laughed and found it funny. Was it a "cheap" joke? Yeah. But yet again comedy is supposed to be lighthearted

I think comedians have to be intelligent to be funny. People like George Carlin, Stephen Fry, Ricky Gervais and John Cleese are among the smartest people in society. Another one is Rowan Atkinson (aka Mr Bean)

It used to be "Politically Correct" to own slaves, and that women couldn't vote. (In the U.S.) To base your beliefs on Politics is demeaning to your personal character. I know I would've disagreed with these past beliefs had I been alive then. I know this, because in my soul, I know they're wrong. And I also know that I will never be a puppet to someone else's beliefs. Conformity is not a strength, it's a weakness. I refuse to be weak. Especially to a government.
