RUMINATIONS: This movie never ceases to make me smile, no matter how stupid and cheap it is. The comic brings about similar feelings. And of course I had no idea a comic adaptation of it existed until it was sent my way via donation. The film is nothing but good-natured fun about some goofy martians wanting to bring Santa Claus to Mars so that their children can have joy and laughter. Mind you, if you wanted to look at it sociologically speaking, their problems are not rooted in children not having toys, but how Martian society is turning them into machines. As Chochum (or whatever the hell old Martian’s name is) stated, they have no children on the planet because none of them are allowed to be children. Given Vuldar’s talk about their society being war-based, it’s likely that they’ve had a very rigid, fascist state in the past that has only crumbled in recent times and it’s taking people a lot of time to adjust to the change.
Also: I’m reading way, WAY too much into a film called “Santa Claus Conquers the Martians.”
Mystery Science Theater 3000 is probably my favorite show of all time (it changes depending on what day of the week you ask me, but it’s a good answer) and the crew of the Satellite of Love are really who a lot of comedic reviewers like myself have to thank for pioneering the idea of riffing on bad media. While others may have done it before them, MST3K is what made the idea so fun and mainstream. And naturally, writing an episode like this was difficult because every time I’d read a line that was in both the comic and the movie, my instincts immediately wanted me to parrot the MST3K riff accompanying it. And yet somehow The gang from MST3K has riffed on the film no less than three separate times - the original, the Cinematic Titanic version, and the rifftrax live version. This is why these people are professional comedians and I’m some jackass on the internet. But it’s all good, because this is still a holiday favorite and I’m still happy I ended the year with it.
