nope. no gibsons ever till they stop trying to bail yhemselves out by suing other guitar makers. Oneve i learned the Appton story, thats when i wrote them off. Too.expensolive anyway jist to show off their rediculous name. No one cares. I watch a kod play.a Van Halen Medley on a cheap Hello Kitty Guitar. Thats when the world changed for me. ITS NOT THE GUITAR AS MUCH AS IT THE PLAYER CONTROLLING IT. WAS QUITE A SIGHT TO WITNESS
Because they won't be able to make it as cheaply as they make les pauls and they've learned that people will only spend dumb amounts of money on les paul body guitars. I've got an anniversary nighthawk. They're more or less a telecaster competitor, despite the sort of les paul-ish outline. they made them plekd with figured top, hard case, full gloss nitro and pretty good quality mahogany for $1600 at retail. Great guitar. 75% of the public doesn't like them because when they get one (they're fender scale) they don't have a neck angle (flat) and don't sound like a les paul.
True, but that player will still pay gibson prices for a guitar that will likely not hold much resale value. I hear ya though. It should be affordable off the bat. Knowing gibson, it wont be. Epiphone model maybe? Then you loose wood and component quality.
Lightning Rod epiphones don’t always lose quality in the wood, you just gotta play a few to find a good one. Or get vintage Epi as no one keeps an epiphone round that long unless it’s good
I have one of the Epiphone reissue Nighthawks from a few years back. It's a fun and quirky guitar. Same pickup arrangement as the original Gibson (mini-humbucker at the neck, single coil middle, slanted humbucker at the bridge), and a push-pull pot splits the humbuckers.
I like those 3-pickup Nighthawks. Best new design that Gibson’s done in years, although they’re not all that new-they came out in the ‘90s. I should have bought one then.
Those old Nighthawks are amazing guitars! Just a little nitpicky note, the Gibson version of the Blueshawk had special humbucking pickups called Blues 90s. They also had a coil TAP (different from a coil split) option to get more Fender-like tones, as well as a 25.5" scale.
I like it, but I also play a Strat as well as my Gibsons. I reminds me of my neck-thru ESP Horizon - a Strat shape with a carved top. But with how other "new" models haven't exactly gone over well, I can understand why Gibson would be hesitant to produce it.
Honestly, I like this. This could use a few minor changes, like the head stock, but there's a lot of cool ideas for Gibson, who is generally adhering almost completely to a fairly narrow, but still successful, set of design ideas
The original Gibson Nighthawk was my first electric guitar, fond memories. It had 3 pickups kind of a combination of different guitars. Loved it. Wish I still had it.
And also looks like a Schecter Omen Extreme 6. I would rather have he Schecter Omen Extremea 6 and the Les Paul Prophecy guitars. I do not care for Basswood not so Dense Tonewoods Body on the Schecter, while I love the Epiphone LP Prophecy Dense Solid Tonewoods Body ! ! ! Peace & Play 🎸 On . . . 👍😎🤘🎸🙏 DDHarris 6-20-2020.
My two cents worth: I think this is not a Gibson. I think that the shop that is selling it made it, and slapped a Firebird Zero trussrod cover on the headstock.
There was a "The Hawk" also, I could have snagged one of those for $500 at a GC in Ashville, NC a few years ago but didn't. I still kick myself for that choice
Yes there’s a BB King Blueshawk that has his varitone selector as well as the threeway selector. The blues hawks also have a dummy coil rear mounted and reverse wound for him cancelling. Right now there’s a BB King BH on reverb. I prefer The Hawk model. Bare bones stripped down. Two Humbucker sand a wrap tail. All muscle no fluff. Would love to see a review on a The Hawk one day too Trogley!!
"So Jimmy, when a Les Paul and a Stratocaster love each other very much..." I'd totally rock one, but I'd prefer a trem (Floyd preferred) rather than a Tune-o-matic + stop tailpiece.
Looks like a Schecter or Jackson super strat to me. There are a lot of companies that make very similar guitars at a lower price point. I think if they were to make a Epiphone version of this at a around $500 price point I think that would probably do really well. 😝🤘🎸 🎸 🎸 🎸
I have one of those. It's called a Schecter C-1+. Insanely nice neck, Duncan Designed pickups that sound fantastic. The best flame top I have ever owned. Made in Korea. Total keeper. Available now and then for about $300 used. I don't need a Les Paul anymore. Go figure.
That prototype at the very beginning with the double cutaway. I would love to have that guitar. It's basically exactly what I've been looking for, but doesn't have a PRS name on the headstock. I don't like buying a bunch of the same name brand guitars unless it's Fenders(I just happened to have addiction to buying them like you do for Gibson).but when I buy other guitars I don't buy multiple ones of the same brand.I already have a few PRS is but I'm looking for something that plays a little bit nicer(and that'd be pretty hard to find, cuz one of my PRSs is is really nice). That Gibson Nighthawk double-cut is exactly what I need to fill out my happiness as far as"These are all the different guitars I need as far as playability and tone are concerned,so I can have every tone that I could possibly need". For now my G.A.S. has been (temporarily)satiated.
You Should've mentioned J.T. Ribiloff. He designed the nighthawk when he worked for Gibson in the 90s. He also worked with Floyd Rose, B.C. Rich, Samick (JTR Series).
I have 2 x Gibson Nighthawk ST-3’s, both with Floyd Rose tremolos, that I bought in 95/96. I love these guitars. They are so versatile. I have no idea how much they might be worth today, but I have never found another one with Floyd Rose trems since, so I think they may(?) be quite rare. Austin, let me know if you would like photos and a demo for a future video and I’d be happy to put something together for you. 😊👍
Greetings Austin! I think there would be a number of guitar players that would rock that guitar, myself included. I would prefer it to have a different control layout, like four knobs and a three-way switch in a different location, more like an SG or a Les Paul. The body style itself is a lot like a more contoured Stratocaster, but with some Gibson and Epiphone features. Thank you for posting this video! Please have an excellent and awesome day! 🙂
I actually really like this one. I never liked the "open book" or "saloon door" headstocks so my favorite Gibson guitars are usually underdogs within their own brand. If it had a wine red or brushed satin finish (like the SGJ you had) this would be a perfect Gibson guitar for me as far as looks go. A sort of SG-ocaster, but more elegant than either would be independently. If I could own ... ummm... ten Gibson guitars, I would pick these (#1 is my absolute favorite top pick, but the others are in no particular order... Gibson traditionalists will find this list weird, confusing or even obscene) 1. Victory MVX 2. Corvus Futura 3. Nighthawk II Prototype 4. Vegas Standard 5. Firebird Zero* (as a good-looking modding platform, five blue ones or more to mess around with) 6. Modern Flying V (though I'd prefer Graffiti Yellow with aged white pick guard and chrome hardware) 7. EH-500 Skylark lapsteel 8. Challenger I, II, III 9. Epiphone Worn Wilshire Reissue (not a Gibson, but close enough) 10. Epiphone Mandobird ... oh, and I don't like Les Paul's because my first guitar was a lawsuit era Mann Les Paul that nearly gave me carpal tunnel and hurt my ribcage... I think retuning it every 5 minutes is why I find the "open book" headstock so ugly... I think SGs would look really good if they had headstocks like a Marauder... a Devil Tail SG. My Mann Les Paul felt too small at the nut for my liking and my left hand would ache all the time until I got a guitar with a wider nut or whatever the issue was. Maybe for that reason I'd wind up hating a few of my favorite Gibsons, but I've held an MVX and I do know that I'd like one of those and I'd keep it forever if I had one.
I’m not a fan of Gibsons in general, but I find them beautiful. From the practical standpoint I’m more of a Fender guy, but I do have two superstrats in my little collection, so this one is definitely a superstrat model and I would like to try it out. I even find that headstock pretty and practical: parallel strings, little angle. Almost every negative side of the Les Paul model (except the heel joint and too glossy neck) was removed. I even can see it more fit for any floating tremolo system. I think Gibson should be more aggressive in the superstrat field, so they can be attractive for people like me. So I will definitely try something like that if they decide to place it on the market.
Their website offers warmoth bodies and necks. If you look at some of the other guitars they have for sale it just makes this "nighthawk" throw a lot of red flags. They can make some seriously crazy reliced guitars from the looks of it. Then it's weird how a prototype guitar has no paperwork or certificate of authenticity, but has a soft shell case, and basic case candy? I'm not an expert in any way shape or form, but l'm just curious as to what little information they put about the description of the guitar other than its supposed to be a replacement for a production gibson nighthawk.
Some of their versions of the M-III were some serious instruments for modern day play. Have an modified epiphone that was the same look but bolt-on neck(prophecy). But it had the ill fated epi active pickups :(.... Replaced with custom washburn pups and now incredible guitar.
I have a black 1996 'Hawk' and its' pickups have some serious output or volume. Every time I plug it in, I have to turn the volume down because it's the loudest of my 50+ guitars. By a LOT! And the headstock of the Nighthawk featured looks like a flattened Epiphone batwing shape.
The Nighthawk Mk2 is roughly where one would expect a contemporary Gibson to be. Vaguely reminiscent of the Victory from the early eighties (I own a Victory MV2, superb instrument), which I think is slightly better in design, even though the Vics had a standard painted finish (Candy-apple red [mine], Metallic lake blue and two-tone sunburst) and were made entirely from rock maple, apart from the rosewood fretboard (with offset position markers - very cool). I like the Nighthawk 2, but would prefer to throw spondoolies on an original Nighthawk (like Nancy's...). I do have an Epiphone Nighthawk Reissue, in purple flame-top. Actually a really nice guitar. Superb finish, mahogany body and neck, rosewood board, with complex crown inlays. I've updated the pickups on mine to include a DiMarzio 'Crunch Lab' in the bridge slanted position (I fitted the Crunchlabs coils and mags to the Epi's bridge pickup backplate - very simple mod), with a SD 'Billy Gibbons sig' Lille 59 in the centre position and a SD 'Antiquity' mini-bucker in the neck position. All pups are four-conductor, giving a variety of voices.
This was a prototype that was being worked on towards the middle of 2017. It was to try and appeal to the Strat players. Once Henry was gone it got scrapped. About late 2016 all the prototypes started being sold to Japan instead of being scrapped. Don’t remember what the name was going to be. Think it was still being determined. Designer has his own website. www.keithmedleymusic.com/.
Well I guess I'm 7 months late, but I think this is the nicest looking Gibson I've seen in quite some time. I even like the headstock. I wouldn't call it a Nighthawk though. Oh wait. What am I thinking? How dare Gibson for trying to innovate? I'm boycotting the company. But, if Epiphone built that, I would totally buy it.
WYRON? I would! Maybe with an Explorer headstock I would love it even more. Short question for you guys: Was there ever an Explorer headstock with binding? Thanks and "take care" - Thanks for your videos Austin! Greetings from Austria!
Looks almost exactly like the G&L Ascari GTS, just with a different headstock. I don't think they make them anymore, but everyone who says they love this prototype should try to check out the G&L.
I’d definitely make an effort to find and play one if Gibson produced them. I think it’s a cool looking guitar and the straight string pull is great. Not sure I love the headstock (too long and thin?), but I don’t hate it. Thanks for showing this to us.
I might be in the minority here, but I love it. I always wanted a Les Paul DC and this looks really good too me. I am starting to like that Nighthawk a lot more now too.
I think Epiphone should come out with this at a better price range and more creative electrical setup. A set of pull pots would be sick! Maybe just go with a hockey stick headstock.
the night hawk was introduced during the fender popularity period-and was designed to sound like the working telecaster with one humbucker and the fender sound on the bridge--weird gibson
I don't recall the original Nighthawk guitars being that popular over here in England (the frontwoman from Sleeper played one) , although I quite like the Blueshawk when it came out. Pretty sure they were 25.5" scale length.

Actually probably would
NO, because I don't have 2k to spend on a guitar. But she's hot.
Not a bad looking guitar, I can see myself with that mutt 🤔
nope. no gibsons ever till they stop trying to bail yhemselves out by suing other guitar makers. Oneve i learned the Appton story, thats when i wrote them off. Why All the COOL Models can only be find in Japan if all these babies are US Made!?😢🤧
Why wouldn't they make this? That seems odd to me, it looks great.
Because they won't be able to make it as cheaply as they make les pauls and they've learned that people will only spend dumb amounts of money on les paul body guitars.

@@daw162 nitro is one of cheapest finishes actually
SemiObsessive: He has to have something to say about it. He's not talking like a guitar player.
It’s yet another double cut attempt from the big G , they’ve been trying for a while. I bet PRS probably threatens them with a lawsuit each time :)
David W I’m considering buying one of the anniversary models. But the gloss neck throws me off. Is it sticky or is it a fast neck
Love everything about it. I dig the head stock and straight string pull through.
Oh, I would definitely rock it. Kinda reminds me of the Gibson Longhorn that I own and love.
Yup! I would definitely rock that! It's gorgeous!
Woah, that thing is sweet! I wish Gibson would have made them
I wish this would come out it would appeal to more player that don’t want a traditional gib but has the features of one
True, but that player will still pay gibson prices for a guitar that will likely not hold much resale value. I hear ya though. It should be affordable off the bat. Knowing gibson, it wont be. Epiphone model maybe? Then you loose wood and component quality.
Buy a PRS then
Lightning Rod epiphones don’t always lose quality in the wood, you just gotta play a few to find a good one.
Or get vintage Epi as no one keeps an epiphone round that long unless it’s good
Let’s be honest , big G will want at least 3 g’s. Reminds me of Cadillac trying to play the German game; best to wait till they’re on discount
✋😃 That's me!!
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THAT!!!!! looks fantastic to me, would like to own that, come on Gibson, pull yer finger out!!!!!
I know this is old joke...
But that don’t look very authentic...
I’m fender guy, I would rock this.
I have one of the Epiphone reissue Nighthawks from a few years back. It's a fun and quirky guitar. Same pickup arrangement as the original Gibson (mini-humbucker at the neck, single coil middle, slanted humbucker at the bridge), and a push-pull pot splits the humbuckers.

it looks like the Ovation Josh Homme used to use
Shieet you beat me by 30 mins
oh ya, would love that one , out of my price range
Those old Nighthawks are amazing guitars! Just a little nitpicky note, the Gibson version of the Blueshawk had special humbucking pickups called Blues 90s. They also had a coil TAP (different from a coil split) option to get more Fender-like tones, as well as a 25.5" scale.
I’d play it and love to have one but I wouldn’t purchase it full price.
It looks like a Les Paul mixed with a strat
Kinda diggin' it
Like a prs
but better
I think it’s gorgeous
I like it, but I also play a Strat as well as my Gibsons. I reminds me of my neck-thru ESP Horizon - a Strat shape with a carved top. But with how other "new" models haven't exactly gone over well, I can understand why Gibson would be hesitant to produce it.
Definetly ROCK it!
I've always loved Nighthawks. Closest thing I could get to a Les Paul Recording guitar lol.
Honestly, I like this. This could use a few minor changes, like the head stock, but there's a lot of cool ideas for Gibson, who is generally adhering almost completely to a fairly narrow, but still successful, set of design ideas
I think it would do good with the right promotion and a "studio" option to keep it affordable and marketed towards no modern playing
The original Gibson Nighthawk was my first electric guitar, fond memories. It had 3 pickups kind of a combination of different guitars. Loved it. Wish I still had it.
I honestly wish Gibson decided to sell these, they are great looking guitars!
It reminds me of a solid body version of a Languedoc. Totally getting a Trey Anastasio vibe. I like everything but the headstock.
Same here
Greg must be the to go guy for the most laid back and smoothest demos on youtube😎
The double cut proto reminds me of an Ibanez .gem
Reminds me more of an ibanez SA
I could see that
Agreed. The fretboard and inlays would be the real deal if Gibson had made it. Either way, Fender guy, but I would play this guitar.
Would totally rock this
There was a "The Hawk" also, I could have snagged one of those for $500 at a GC in Ashville, NC a few years ago but didn't. I still kick myself for that choice
Hooray! Trogly!
That Green modern double cut pic really grabbed my eye. I had to pause and soak it in.
This guitar looks a lot like the Ernie Ball Music Man Sabre
Not really lol
I think B.B. King used a Blueshawk for a time.
There is a signature "Little Lucille" version for him
Yes there’s a BB King Blueshawk that has his varitone selector as well as the threeway selector.
"So Jimmy, when a Les Paul and a Stratocaster love each other very much..."
I'd totally rock one, but I'd prefer a trem (Floyd preferred) rather than a Tune-o-matic + stop tailpiece.
Looks like a Schecter or Jackson super strat to me. There are a lot of companies that make very similar guitars at a lower price point. I think if they were to make a Epiphone version of this at a around $500 price point I think that would probably do really well. 😝🤘🎸 🎸 🎸 🎸
Much better than other Gibson designs.
Greg is such an amazing player, he could sell me anything. Props to you for putting his demo at the end :)
Man you got really good at guitar
I LOVE this,,, I think it's better than the modern double cut
I think gibson dropped the ball not making this one
I want it sooo bad it's unique and looks really good the mix of old and new on this guitar works super well.
0:30 I have that exact guitar and it has got to be one of most underrated guitars ever! The thing is awesome!
That trans black flame top Gibson modern double cut is gorgeous
Looks like a copy of a Strat with Les Paul pickups, a bad non-reverse Firebird headstock, and the PRS carved top and control layout.
I love it.
Yes,!!!!!!!!yes!!!!!!! Yes!!!! I'd buy it,sign me up . 🙏🙏 Gibson should release it to the public.
The slight offset shape reminds me of a suhr modern. You could probably spec out a carve top set neck version that would look pretty similar.
Suhr ROCKS! Love, love, love mine.
I can't quite put my finger on it but there's something really cool about this guitar.
That guitar is actually beautiful
It looks like a something Ibanez would produce. I would buy one for the right price, and maybe a hsh configuration.
Thanks for the video Austin. I quite surprised myself, and ended up quite liking this Guitar.
Trogly's in the HOUSE!!!
Greetings Austin! I think there would be a number of guitar players that would rock that guitar, myself included. That guitar is beautiful. I would definitely rock it out for the right price.
It really reminds me of the high roller
i agree with You this one should stay a prototype. kind of freaky that mixture of modern and traditional specs
Personally, I love the look of this guitar!

6. Modern Flying V (though I'd prefer Graffiti Yellow with aged white pick guard and chrome hardware)
7. EH-500 Skylark lapsteel
8. Challenger I, II, III
9. Epiphone Worn Wilshire Reissue (not a Gibson, but close enough)
10. Epiphone Mandobird

Reminds me of the Fender Esprit also known as the Robin Ford or the Flame elite
I'm digging it!!! However, I think an Explorer headstock with an optional Floyd Rose FRX or original Floyd would be cool too!
I’m not a fan of Gibsons in general, but I find them beautiful. It reminds me a lot of a Gibson US-1. I'd definitely rock it.
I actually like it... At some point most guitarists want that LP crossed with strat guitar....coil taps would be a nice touch.
I really like the design of this guitar!
Want one!

I think Gibson should take that prototype “Nighthawk II” body and release it with the original ‘90s 3-pickup Nighthawk electronics setup. I’d buy one!
I just got a Gibson Les Paul Tribute, it came in the soft shell case. I love both lol.
Reminds me fondly of the G&L Fiorano/Ascari series.
Nice headstock on this one I hope the angle is not too radical.
I like it. Would definitly try it out if I saw it at a guitar store. Maybe they could a few different ones, a modern, a custom etc.
I love it.
I would absolutely buy this. im not a les paul guy so this would be super comfy im sure.
I’d definitely make an effort to find and play one if Gibson produced them. I think it’s a cool looking guitar and the straight string pull is great. Not sure I love the headstock (too long and thin?), but I don’t hate it. Thanks for showing this to us.
Yeah, I could imagine it with a LP head stock, I'd rock it!
I might be in the minority here, but I love it. I always wanted a Les Paul DC and this looks really good too me. I am starting to like that Nighthawk a lot more now too.
WOW! I like that! If they made it I would buy one (as long as it was an Epiphone, who wants to pay Gibson prices).
I would love to see that guitar with a Les Paul pickguard and a Floyd Rose, it would make it look pretty freakishly hybrid!! A SuperLP!
super carved top like a PRS
Looks really great. I wonder what kind of PUPS are in it. Perhaps something unique also.
I am not a Gibson fan per se, however I dig this one! I would rock it!
I think Epiphone should come out with this at a better price range and more creative electrical setup. A set of pull pots would be sick! Maybe just go with a hockey stick headstock.
I like it and hope they make it. Trans Black would be great.
I LIKE IT! Just not the price they want for the prototype. Would like to hear this baby in action.
the night hawk was introduced during the fender popularity period-and was designed to sound like the working telecaster with one humbucker and the fender sound on the bridge--weird gibson
Looks like a Les Strat or maybe a Les Dinky. That's some sweet jams at the end.
I'w totally rock that thing!!! Super cool desing.
I like it... kinda like a modern Gibson super Strat
It’s an interesting guitar. I dig it not gonna lie.
I don't recall the original Nighthawk guitars being that popular over here in England (the frontwoman from Sleeper played one) , although I quite like the Blueshawk when it came out. Pretty sure they were 25.5" scale length.
I'd definitely rock it, I think it looks awesome
If the headstock was just a little bit different, I would have guessed it was a new G & L Tribute.
