How to Replace Clock Spring / Cable Reel on 2003-2007 Honda Accord

  • A step by step on how to remove your old broken clock spring for any 2003-2007 Honda Accord. The clock spring has the wiring which controls the Horn, Cruise Control, and the Radio Controls on the steering wheel.
    There is one special tool needed to remove the air bag. The rest are general tools. I used a TX30 star bit screwdriver which seemed just slightly small but it did get the job done. I made sure that I applied a good amount of pressure because I did not want to strip the screw which would've created a much harder job.
    All of the controls on the steering wheel now work again. We bought the car about 20 months ago and the radio controls never worked. Once the cruise and horn went I had to replace it as not having a horn became a safety issue for us. It only took about 1 hour to install and that was doing this for my first time. I bought the clock spring off a US seller in California for about $18 shipped. Let's hope it lasts and works for a long time!

    Thank you for a very good video. I used this as a learning tool to change the same part on a 2003 Honda odyssey. I had already purchased a steering wheel pulling tool but after watching the video I saw that I may not need it .. and I didnt. It took me about 30 minutes to change out the part and everything is working fine now. Thanks again for a great video. In closing let me advise people who may need the same part, NAPA and O'Rielly no longer carry some of these clock spring parts. I got mine from the Honda Dealership and their price was only 1/3 more than a used part from a salvage yard.

    Great video! Jon glad I found you! My daughter's 2004 Accord V6 is having the exact same problems. I think the difference is her airbag light has been illuminated for some time now. The radio plays but there are no lights illuminating from the radio panel or controls, volume knobs, etc. So the clock doesn't show, we leave the radio on all the time. If we turn it off there is a long delay before it turns itself on, when it finally comes on it scares the crap out of us, it's that much of a delay, so we just never turn it off. We can switch from CD player to FM radio by sound only, no lights at all on the radio panel and surrounding knobs. Just recently the radio controls on the steering wheel went out, then the cruise control and today the horn quit blowing. I'm not complaining because the car over all is a great car and still is at a little over 210K miles. Can you or any of your subscribers give me a rough estimate of what the repair cost for this repair would be? I wouldn't want to go into a shop blind and get taken to the cleaners. I'm a mother who will tackle some simple things on the car, but this makes me a bit hesitant. Thanks to all in advance! Correction: after reading ALL the comments, I read a comment that gives me an idea of what the repair cost might be. Thanks again! But while I'm here does anyone know of a good video for replacing motor mounts? It would be greatly apppreciated!

    • @GarageBuiltHondas
      @GarageBuiltHondas  5 років тому

      I just scanned UA-cam and found a handful of mount replacement videos so there may be a decent few which show you how to replace all of them. Were you talking about the radio screen being out? You could possibly find a replacement oem radio from a junkyard for an inexpensive price. Just a few options. If my radio was out I'd probably upgrade and get a Bluetooth unit, but that's just me. The volume controls on the wheel wouldn't work anymore but that wouldn't bother me.

      +Moe Asad absolutely!! Our horn and cruise worked when we bought the car, but the radio controls never worked. Once the cruise stopped working I replaced it because we use the cruise control frequently. Replacing the cable reel should fix your issues also.

      @Iguanajj Рік тому

      I’ve been going over the replies to get the gist of this clock spring replacement. I then come across “cable reel assembly”
      Is that in the clock spring or separate?
      Here’s what happening with mine 2007 Accord: radio volume and station changer on steering wheel stopped working. Cruise still works.
      At night and very randomly the dash radio light would brighten then dim, brighten then dim. That recently has stopped.
      What is causing the volume control to stop working on steering wheel.

    This is a great tutorial, thank you for posting it. It will likely save me $230. How long did it take you? My dealer's book says 2.5 hours @ $118/ hour. Kind of a ripoff after watching your video.
    My horn stopped working at the same time as my cruise control. All the steering wheel buttons still work except it won't set the cruise control speed. I brought it to the dealer and they said that the clock spring shorted out. I was gonna leave it be but then I realized that I really need the horn because there is always a bad driver doing something stupid on the road. Hopefully that wasn't red lock-tite on the threads. Blue would be more suitable if you ever want to remove this bolt in the future. Good video. Trying this job myself in a few weeks. Ordered a puller kit for $30 off Amazon and the coil for $20 off eBay. May not need the puller but good to have ready if it is stubborn.

  • @funda3810
    @funda3810 7 років тому

    Most people who replace these find they last about 5 minutes, after which time they break again. You did not specify this, but many of these units need to be centered before installing because they come wound up tight. You have to turn them about 2-1/2 complete turns from the wound position before installing, otherwise, there will not be enough slack when the wheel is turned and the ribbon will be destroyed.

    • @GarageBuiltHondas
      @GarageBuiltHondas  7 років тому +2

      Thanks for the added info. This particular unit had the small clip which was attached to the cable reel stating that it was centered and needed to be removed after placing the unit onto the column and before the reinstall of the steering wheel. It has worked great so far thankfully!

    • @atroise
      @atroise 7 років тому

      So this is what cause all those things stop working ( horn, cruise control, radio buttons on the steering wheel,) my car the VSA has stopped also, do you think it has to do with clock spring/cable reel as well? Thank you very much for the video and your reply, I was trying to find out what is wrong with my, I checked fuses, relays and horn it is all good, must be this the problem.

    • @GarageBuiltHondas
      @GarageBuiltHondas  7 років тому

      I do not believe this part has anything to do with the VSA. That system may not be functioning anymore and I would take it to a dealer to have them check it out. If the light is constantly on then something is wrong with the VSA system. It will blink when it is working, like in slippery conditions but shouldn't stay illuminated all the time.

    • @atroise
      @atroise 7 років тому

      Ok Thank you!

    • @atroise
      @atroise 7 років тому

      The reason why I thought has something to do with the clock spring is because it stopped working at the same time (VSA) as horn, buttons etc, and it's off not on, and the other thing is my airbag light is off as well. Any ways I will have a go on clock spring to see what happens. Cheers.

    I have 07 acura tsx. I replaced the clock spring with the honda accord part. It's working fine for two weeks. Now, the horn and buttons works sometimes and sometimes it does not! Especially when I turn the steering to the left, it works. When I turn to the right, it does not work. The hell? I bought the part used on ebay. Thanks

    • @GarageBuiltHondas
      @GarageBuiltHondas  7 років тому

      Probably worn out, if it works sometimes when turned to the left then I imagine the reel is making contact but when straightening the wheel back out it loses contact. The ribbon inside is pretty fragile and can be damaged easily. I'd get a new one for only $18 off eBay.

    • @funda3810
      @funda3810 7 років тому

      You probably failed to center the assembly before installing. A lot of these come already wound up all the way. You have to rotate the thing manually about 2-1/2 turns so there will be enough play in either direction for the steering wheel to turn. This is the whole point of the name "Clock Spring", because it is a ribbon cable wound up like clock spring. But if the thing is already all the way to one side, it will be damaged when you try to turn the wheel that direction.
