If your Honda Accord has never being wrecked/airbag never deployed, and suddenly your airbag light comes on and stays on even after you start the engine, this is the fix I did to solve it. Your seatbelt buckle assembly simply needs to be changed.
There is a sensor in the seatbelt buckle assembly that's prone to failure after a few years of normal driving, and when it fails, it triggers the airbag light to come on indicating a malfunction in the system (Airbag won't deploy if seat belt buckle is not inserted property or if the Airbag light is on)
Replacing the buckle assembly is fairly easy:
1. Remove driver side seat bolts so you can tilt the seat forward (watch youtube video on how to remove the seat on Accord)
2. Remove old seat belt buckle assembly (One bolt and a few lock-on clips that may require pliers to take out) *Do remember where the clips are and how the wiring goes so when you install new one you can follow the same pattern.*
3. Install new seat belt buckle assembly and follow the same cable routing pattern as the old one you've removed
4. Reinstall the seat
5. Turn on engine and observe the airbag light go off!
I would suggest purchasing brand new assembly instead of used since the sensor is prone to failure.

Before going through all this vid calls for this is what worked for me. It took 2 minutes. With the car off pour some rubbing alcohol into the buckle and work the action with the belt 10 times or so. Repeat the alcohol and work the action 10 more times. Pour a little more alcohol into the buckle like a rinse. Wait until the alcohol drys before starting the car. This cleans the crud off the switch.
You da real mvp
Thank you! Worked for me!
Genius! Thank you very much.
did you open it up or what
Sir
You just fix my car
Thank you!
Posted 11May2023, 2005 Honda Accord. This process was derived from a reply by "luismondo" below (it is his idea). The airbag light was staying on. Read this post and tried it. IT WORKED LIKE A CHAMP, the airbag light now goes on when the car is started and then goes off and stays off. What I did was pop the release switch in the safety belt receptacle on the driver's side about ten times. Using the straw, I liberally sprayed "Electrical Contact Cleaner (spray can)" inside the receptacle using the seatbelt insert hole. Popped the safety belt release switch about 5 times and sprayed it inside again. Lastly, I popped the release switch about 10 times. Started the car, buckled up, and no more airbag light. It has been a week since I did this and all is well.
i remember i fix this freaking thing long time ago, it comes on again today , and i find YOUR video, i spray some electrical cleaner [lots of them] into the buckle itself and it work [for now]
My 2004 accord had the same problem after 6 year of ownership. I took it to the dealer they fixed it for free. They told me parts related to the airbags have lifetime warranty as stated in the manual.
Are you sure that the passenger airbag has lifetime warranty?
Thx
Is this true?
No
Not according to my dealer. Seat belts yes but not airbag system
@@jerejoy5196 I will find out, since this issue is the seat belt buckle assembly, my family's Accord has had this issue for years, and I just found out about the warranty. Here's what it says in the owners manual, "Honda provides a lifetime warranty
on seat belts for U.S. models. See your Honda Warranty Information booklet for details.".
Brilliant! Thanks for the help, dude!:)))
how can you tell which seat belt is the problem?
I fixed it for free by cleaning the switch inside the buckle with contact cleaner.
TheLuismondo . Hi, did you just spray the lense cleaner by opnening the buckle or just had spray on top of the buckle?
how did you do that? Open the buckle?
Ageel Chohan, he doesn't mean "contact" cleaner like the kind one uses for their contact lenses on their vision. He's talking about electrical contact cleaner spray.
@First Name light still hasn’t came on? I’m looking to fix mine
Can you make a video on it?
Look peeps! My 2003 accord had this same issue. I took it to the dealer. Diag charge was $135. Seatbelt sensor came back bad. They replaced it UNDER WARRANTY in 2018 for FREE! And waived the diag charge! I paid nothing. Some airbag parts are under lifetime warranty. First owner or 20th owner. Just take it to the dealer and save your time!
I have the same thing. Dealer said warranty only covers mechanical issue not electric issue with the buckle and wants $400 to replace the buckle...
Jake Methner
Hey Jake take to other dealer place to do it free or like a 100 bucks for it is fair price I guess. They don’t care they just want to rip the customer s off etc. Good luck. Man
I wiggled mine around and boom. Thank you!
Yes buddy, you were right. I touched several times the seat belts sensor and that was the problem.
/!\ CRITICAL!!!! - might not be related, BUT... There’s a recall for Hondas from around this era. They have a serious airbag defect-airbags (made by Takata for Honda and other companies) either deploying when they’re not supposed to or, exploding and throwing shrapnel through the airbag cushion when deployed. Supposedly one of the biggest recalls in automotive history
I would recommend people with this issue to properly read the SRS error code. There can be many other causes beside the seat belt sensor. Mine is due to the weight sensors under the seat.
How do you get the SRS code?
So what were your symptoms with the weight sensor under the seat? And how did you go about repairing or replacing it? How much did it cost? Did you get it repaired at the dealership?
@@beast11135 ua-cam.com/video/pJfiU2c0DOY/v-deo.html
this is actually happened to my accord 2005. yes true. the problem is in the sensor buckle not in the air bag.
Thanks again bro for your posting this to help me and others
Safety components such as seatbelts and buckles have a lifetime warranty. Honda will replace them for free. This includes parts and labor.
That is seatbelts and buckles but what about the airbags?
This is CORRECT!!! Honda warranty’s their seat belts for life!
Thank you very much..Li Fan. This video was very helpful. I had just nootice this within couple days ago. And yet saved a few $$ from the Honda dealership, well especially not everyone know of the "reset seat buckle" thingy you showed hanging around from their garage. So thanks gain...keep up the great work, Sir!
Any idea what that seat belt sensor might cost?
Also, I have read that the seat belt and components in a Honda have lifetime warranty.
It's being discontinued probably
Thanks for the detailed tip. Been having this issue with mine lately. Annoying having this airbag light go on.
Need help I got this code on my Honda Accord 05 87-32 passenger airbag cutoff indicator stays on help if someone knows thanks 👍🏻
cause for someone else it can be either drivers or passengers side belt
Bro, what was the code being read by the computer during scan?
Both my airbag and seatbelt light stays on
The module is malfunctioning, may need replacement or repair.
I just got my 2005 Honda fix with the air bag recall my air bag light was on and off and I found your blog on the problem and I told the Honda tech people and they test it with there tester and replace the seatbelt on the driver side for free. But I had to jump through hoops with the dealer place because they don’t want to really spend any time or do anything more then they want to. Customer service is long gone on most places because it’s all about the money and get them in and getting them out $$$$. So I do like how Honda we’ll warrantee safety stuff compared to Toyota and their brakes or whatever happened there
How do I get my passenger airbag to turn on above the Hazzard button ??
I'm totally agree with Joel Bargas and James V, but for the case in this video, it's nothing Danger because it's not the same. The airbag won't deploy as long as you did not attempt to disconnect and dismantle the SRS Module. This video is good for those who never had an accident with the car and the airbag never deploy, this video is helpful.
For those who faced an accident by hitting other car's butt, and your airbag was not deploy, please be informed that after your car got repaired and done the insurance claim, you have 30 Days to come back to the workshop, some insurance company offered 60 Days to return the car after collected from the workshop if you found related damaged was not been rectified/repaired. So, if the srs/airbag indicator started to light on 2 weeks later or a month or two later, you may return to the workshop and ask them to replace the seat belt sensor switch with free of charge, they may claim back to the insurance company. DO NOT I repeat Do NOT agree with the workshop if they advise you to do the diagnostic the airbag and erase the error code. The light may turn off just for a while and will come back On because the error code will keep being develop by DTC as long the faulty sensor still existed.

Ooo😅
No need to buy this part ... All Honda SRS seatbelt parts are covered with a lifetime warranty. Its in the back of your owners manual
DarkendSun - please let American Honda know this. I am having this issue with my 2003 Accord and I have been told it is not covered by the lifetime warranty. I'm thinking it should be and your story confirms it.
Think this is only in America and only if the vehicle hasnt been in an accident.
how is that ???
i thought dealerships want to charge for any small service
Sometimes it's worth it to have a dealer do the service properly as they know their own cars. I've been burned multiple times at local auto mechanics and chain auto mechanic stores so after dealer fixed all the issue that the mechanics can't, I'm a believer. Plus dealer service is not any more expensive then the mechanics anyway.
so the drivers seat has a total of 2 sensors ?
There is weight sensor, also a seat position sensor, plus the sensor on the seatbelt buckle that could cause airbag light to go off. But most common is the seatbelt buckle sensor failing
Think it is only Honda America that has the free fix on airbags so beforr booking car in just confirm it.
I have this problem but just watching this video is a waste of time, how can you fixed? do the step by step next time
I sprayed the seat buckle mechanism with WD40 and light now goes off and stays off
first of all, what code did it give you?
What else could it be if I have multiple codes for SRS on. Most of which are circuits open or faulty. I just finished up an engine replacement and the Airbag light came on after everything was completed. Possible that a fuse blew out or maybe I left something unplugged.
There is a process you can follow. By shorting SRS connector in cabin fuse box, SRS indicator will "flash" trouble codes. You Google codes (ie 9 long flash followed by 3 short would be code 9-3). Check individual sensors indicated by code. *NOTE* Many Honda models require SRS sensor be coded to car VIN. Once each code diagnosed and fixed, you can clear memory and reset SRS computer through same fuse connector. If that doesn't work, you don't want to pay for new buckles, u can simply short affected sensors using 3 ohm resistors in connectors (highly illegal if caught)
All SRS system sensors/wiring connectors are (typically) found by looking for bright yellow connectors. Under seats, going into cabin fuse box, etc.
@@chowchow2386when you reset the light with the paperclip under the steering wheel does the airbags still work? Is that supposed to be done after replacing the buckle? I just replaced buckle but still have code
@@Jaydogg209 no you would most likely have to "reset" the computer. Either with an odb II scan tool or try old school, unhook battery and let sit while unhooked (draining any charge in system), cross your battery CABLES ONLY (- touch to +) to ground out system. Should reset it all.
@@Jaydogg209 ...when u cross your battery cables make sure battery is NOT connected 😉😆
Just put your seat belt on before you start the car . Easy, cheap, fix 🤓
The light will only come back on if you take off the belt after it’s been started ...
This worked for me. Thank you!
You don't have to buy it by law all car manufacturers have to replace it for free. Just take it to the dealer.
They won't do it if for free if it was involved in an accident before.
@@TheGizmoGarage I don't see where this car was in an accident and you are correct. Thank you.
Not so true. Why in the world you would think they will do it for free.
My F40 costed $6,400.00.
What is wrong when you talk the belt off and put it back on while running
What is wrong when you take the belt off then put it back on while it's running
How much is the part cost ?
Wasn't this a recall Honda dealers will fix at no cost?
I believe if your car has never being crashed they'll fix it but my car had been in an accident before
@@TheGizmoGarage oh ok thank you. I've just dealt with it being on for years but now that I'm selling want no lights. I'll take it to the local honda dealer and see what they say otherwise fix myself. Probably could use a good cleaning under that seat anyways haha.
This is true but good luck finding the part.
a junkyard in my area has 8 accords in the year range needed. Under $20 for both.
srs code said it was the buckle but when I replaced it the error came back
ThiccDaddy same here
Honda requires SRS components be coded to cars VIN. If you put a used buckle, etc in, it can cause system to remain tripped. You also need to reset SRS computer if it's been triggered by crash, etc. See linked video ua-cam.com/video/pJfiU2c0DOY/v-deo.html
a wasnt aware that the drivers seat had those sensors ,thanks for explaining that to me ....
Yer
never worked its better to scan the computer and then fix what scannee says
As an auto body tech, I'll tell ANYONE NOT CERTIFIED DO NOT MESS WITH ANYTHING IN THE AIR BAG SYSTEM. You don't have to believe me, but if you mess with your SRS and the air bags GO OFF, you'll remember this warning. The way the SRS system works, if it detects a problem, say with a sensor, and you are lucky enough to guess which sensor (as there are many) when you change the sensor, it may falsely detect a collision and set off the bags, and if you have side, knee, or door bags, you could easily total out your car with $6k or more in airbag repair. I'd tell a novice to attempt an engine swap before I'd tell any not certified person to shade tree Mechanic your SRS system. When the bags go off, here's the replacement list- new air bag modules ($1500 or more each), new sensors ($3-400 each), NEW SRS CONTROL MODULE ($1600 or more) plus the programing fees, new front seat belts (drive and front passenger, $2000ish) bc the front seat belts have gas pistons inside the locking mechanism that fire when air bag deployment is detected and lock down the belts to keep you from face planting the bags upon deployment, and that's just parts, labor greatly varies by car, but looking at $2k on the low side. I've seen a bill for as much as $19k on airbag repair alone. It's your choice, don't be cheap when it comes to SRS repair, take it to the dealer or a reputable independent shop.
I tell people the same crap I've Ben working in the bodyshop for 18 years as a head painter and only I in my bodyshop I do all the airbags on top of that and as the newer cars there airbags everywhere on high end cars as well as some low end cars and it could be anything that makes the airbag light turn on and if u are playing the guessing game u will make it worse or blow a air bag in your face and as well a lot more money if one goes off that is y a scanner comes into the rescue because it pin points the cause .. I mean ya sometimes people luck out and it's something stupid as a plug being dirty but it's sometimes but if your light is on that is y u use a scanner a scanner that could do airbags not a cheap scanner that does only engine light !! And for people that don't have a scanner I would bring it to a bodyshop and have them fix it because mostly 95 percent of the times they will fix it bodyshops that are good is who can fix this problem other then the dealer I say this all cars that crash and airbags go off it's the bodyshop that fixes them as well as dealerships I've must of repair millions of airbag from the first generation to now and they've come a super long way with airbags and on some cars if u have the passenger air bag go and I say some cars u happen to be one of them the air bag is part of the hole dash meaning u will have to replace the hole dash so ya my guess is if u are one of them with passenger air bag built in to the dash my guess is bring it somewhere that they no what there doing don't guess with airbags not safe u will regret that one this other guy that committed I don't know him but I agree with him a 100 percent but some people need to learn the hard way so no one has a gun on your head so be my guess to play with that more if u have a high end sports car or luxury car because it will be big bucks if u have a airbag go it's not only a airbag u have to replace there's a nother part as well when a air bag goes boooooooooooommmmmm !!!!
Joel Bargas Hehe yeah I'm having this issue with my Honda civic 2006. Got new tires changed by a shop and they cranked my seat back all the way and now my light is on. Brought it to the dealership and told me it's a wiring harness and it would cost me 1400$ to repair a 4500$ car... I'm a student so it's not getting repaired. Might go to another shop though to get a quote. I'm thinking either it's the wire in the seat that got loose or I've heard that if tires aren't installed right it can mess with a SRS sensor(unsure how true that is though).
This isn’t a fix it’s a part replacement
Honda will fix the seatbelt sensor for free for the life of the vehicle. May be a simple fix but why pay for it yourself?
just got off the phone with honda dealer. their pat answer "its the SRS module, about 1500.00".
Stupid. It could have been nearly anything in the Air Bag circuit.
Total BS!!!
Wow perfect video showing you nothing
SRS on the air bags means it's bad
