Grizzly 3 HP Cyclone Dust Collector Upgrade | Analysis of Flow Rate Improvements

- Опубліковано 28 чер 2024
- I upgraded my 12 year old single stage Delta dust collector and replaced it with a 3 HP Grizzly 2 stage cyclone dust collector. In this video I explain the difference between the two different dust collection systems and analyze some flow rate data to quantify the difference in airflow in my ducting system.

I absolutely love your set-up. I always try to rush things and I have to remind myself it took you some time to aquire everything you have like all others.
Thanks Travis. It's good to be patient and realize it takes time to build out a shop with the tools and equipment you want. However, its also helpful to have a plan of what your "future state" shop will look like so that you can plan accordingly. I have found sketchup to be a helpful tool in planning for placement of future equipment, particularly when planning the placement of tools with a large footprint.
yes, lovely analysis! i'm upgrading my system and this helps! thank you
I have the exact dust collector. Love it!
Great Video! Good choice of background music too!
Part 2?
You are officially The King Dust Collector!
LOL, my son calls me that :D
So you’re saying your new dust collection system is more efficient than my left lung? I say the jury is still out.
Great video and analysis 👍. Looks like that Etsy money is coming in handy. 😉
Thanks Logan. It's such a good feeling to have your workshop come together. I am very lucky to have such an amazing place to do my projects in.
Hope you're well :)
Thank you for all this. great information....two questions if I may...overall, how do you rate the grizzly build quality? Second, if one ran a 6" trunk, it would still be necessary to reduce to 4" ducting for the tools ( and to connect to the DC...what do you think that will do to the airflow?
thank you for your time, and thank you for the massve amount of effort you put into producing this video!!!
Thanks for the kind words, Chuck. I think the grizzly build quality overall is good, but I have been a little disappointed by the life of the filter. I had to replace it after less than a year and they are very expensive. Just something to keep in mind if you're looking at getting one.
I think "necking" down to 4" as you get closer to the tools is completely fine. Most tools have a 4" dust port so it's somewhat expected that you will transition to 4" when you get closer to your tools. It shouldnt impact airflow too much.
Excellent video - nice work! But you didn’t answer the obvious question, how much did the new system cost? Secondarily, where did you get those cool magnetic adapters for your dust hoses?
haha, I guess I never addressed the obvious question! The grizzly system was about $2,200 and certainly an amazing addition to my shop. The cool magnets couplings are made by MagPort and you can find them here: magport.net/products/magport-4
I have bought quite a few of these connectors because I think they are really cool and surprisingly air tight.
@@EigenDesigns Thanks so much for the information. Curious how the MagPorts compare to what Izzy Swan offers -- his are quite expensive, especially given the number most wood workers need.
@@cyberreefguru The Magport connectors are expensive too. They are about $25 each so its definitely an expensive upgrade when you consider each connecting coupling will require two magport connectors. Having said that, I am at a stage where I am trying to build my shop just the way I want it and I love how they give me flexibility around my shop :)
Obviously did a lot of homework. Was there a reason why you bought grizzly open jet like any other cyclone vacuum system three Hass. I’m looking at add one to my shop
You kept teasing us with the sound meter but never took any readings.
Hey Rob, I only took the air velocity measurements. Sorry for the tease! 🤭
Curious why you didn’t opt to buy a cyclone and convert your old dust collector to a two stage.
That's a great question and in order to answer it I need a lengthy answer.
Adding a cyclone to my single stage dust collector would solve the problem of the dust filter clogging up quickly because it would remove most of the solids before it ever reached the single stage separator. However, it wouldn't fix the underlying issue that I had, which was that I wasn't getting enough airflow at each of my tools. Adding a cyclone doesn't add more airflow, in fact, in would introduce another pressure drop in the system so the net impact of airflow at my tools would actually go down.
My Delta has been an amazing dust collector and it has served me well. But, it doesn't have enough power to run an entire shop with a central ducting system. When I first started woodworking I would hook up my dust collector to each tool as I used them and it was great for that. If I was still operating like that in my shop and didn't have a centralized dust collecting system to account for, I think adding a cyclone would be a great (much lower cost) upgrade to the shop.
I hope that helps. It's a really good question that I didn't address in the video, but it warranted a full answer. Thanks Kartik.
Data, insights, impact, scope - you sound like a MSFT employee 🤣
Also, how’s it working with the upgraded pipe?
Dude! I don't work for MSFT, but I do work for a large oil and gas company and that kinda talk is just engrained in me at this point! hahaha
I haven't upgraded my system ducting yet, but that's something I plan to do in the next few months. I have my shop layout more or less fixed at the moment so I am prepared to invest a little bit more money to get some larger, higher quality ducting.
@@EigenDesigns Ha - awesome, at least I'm not the only one who speaks corp speak. But totally agreed - waiting for the good stuff is usually worth it.
First :p
Damn, you were faster :c
@@RockHardWoodDaddy You'll have to be faster if you're going to beat @Flammable Maths :D

Have you financially recovered from this investment? Still laughing from that meme photo you inserted!
I am still licking my wounds!
@@EigenDesigns well Atleast there isn’t open wounds from that saw!;)
Have you looked into using the PVC Sewage Main Pipe ‘SDR 35’ ?? Seems like the next incumbent hitting the YT mainstream-in the world of dust collection.
