  • During Dale Jr. Download Episode 527 - Bobby Hillin, Jr.: No Stone Left Unturned, Dale has fond memories of really the only time that him and Bobby raced closely with each other. That was at the 1998 MBNA Platinum 200.
Bobby Hillin., Jr. started 3rd and took the lead on lap 5. He lost the lead to Matt Kenseth on lap 16. Dale Earnhardt, Jr. started 16th and quickly moved his way to the front. However, he struggled to get past Hillin. It seemed Hillin kept pinching Dale down, or he would use a lap car as a pick. Even with them racing hard, they both caught and passed Matt Kenseth on lap 71. Dale would then take the lead from Hillin.
All of Dale's work could have been thrown away when he spun getting onto pit road for what would have been the only green flag stop of the day. Not only that, Bobby Hillin had a slow 23-second pit stop. But even with those troubles, Hillin returned to the lead and Dale was in 2nd.
Then, the only caution came out on lap 139 for Matt Kenseth's crash. Bobby had another long pit stop, so Dale got out in front. As Hillin admitted after the race, he wished he got his crew to make a change as the car was too tight at the end. Earnhardt went on to win his second Busch Series race. Bobby would not come close to winning a Busch race again.

Junior beats Hillin and Hillin was driving Junior's future Cup number that he would be most famous for #8. He drove #88 too but most of us know him as the driver of the #8 car.

I forgot that Bobby Hillin Jr. was running Mark McGwire’s home run total on the side of the car. Don’t think he had a full time sponsor at that time either. Miss seeing that being possible in NASCAR.
