  • Dale Jr. and co-host Mike Davis relive a busy weekend for Dale. First, he tells all about his trip to Darlington Raceway to pace the field with his restored Chevrolet Nova that his dad once raced. He talks about the whole experience including telling old racing stories with family during the car ride down, seeing the industry’s reaction in the garage, and what it was like getting on track. Both Dale and Mike then address the disappointment of NASCAR on FOX not showing the Nova on track.

I’ve followed the 2 + years of progress you’ve made in restoring this beautiful DEI Chevrolet Nova, from the day at the auction to the day you drove it in front of thousands of Dale Earnhardt fans in the stands at Darlington and those who were only able to see it on UA-cam. I’ve seen the restoration photos while it was being torn down and I’ve seen you run it around the JRM campus. It’s such a historically IMPORTANT vehicle in your father’s legacy, and one day soon I’ll be seeing it in person, as I saw it the day it won at Daytona.
Great job, Dale. Your daddy’s still smiling from ear to ear.

I remember when I first started watching NASCAR In Georgia the only tv channel that showed the races was TNN and My mother and father had just gotten cable tv My father had been taking me and my brother to some of the Atlanta races over the years This is all I remember about racing until it started coming on tv I used to watch every Daytona 500 But this was the only NASCAR race that came on tv I really became a fan when TNN started showing all of the races I remember Eli Gold announcing the races on TNN and it was great When Dale won his last race I remember being overwhelming with emotion Because I was listening to Eli on the radio but watching it on tv and I remember Eli saying Fans are just beside themselves When Dale was taking the lead on the white flag My brother and another good friend was there at Talladega on this day and I could have been there too But we used to go to every Atlanta race and Talladega race and a bunch of races at Daytona for the Pepsi 400 It still blows my mind every time I looked back on this race I remember Benny Parson saying Earnhardt is in the middle of the pack I don’t think he has a chance at winning this race and when Dale passes John Andretti in Richard Perry’s 43 car On tv I remember them saying and here comes Earnhardt The intimidator is scraped and beaten but he will not be denied and Benny Parson having to eat his words by saying How did he make through all of these cars I had so much excitement running through me at this moment I could not stay in my seat I mean I never counted Earnhardt out of any race at Talladega or Daytona Because if another racer wanted to win either one of those races They were going to have to deal with Dale Earnhardt and that 3 car Him winning his 10th race at Talladega was nothing new to me because I had watched him dominate this track so much over the years I remember going to a race in 1996 with a friend of mine who was a big Bill Elliot fan and I really didn’t want to go because it was pouring rain on this day and we were still in Georgia and I told my friend I’m not going all way to Talladega and sit in the parking lot just to hear them cancel the race and at 12:00 pm it was still raining and I was mad because I had driven all the way from Georgia to Talladega I was just about ready to tell my friend that I was going back home and he said just let’s wait for 30 more minutes so I agreed and about 20 minutes later The sun came out and we were walking in to the grandstands This is the day that you could have heard a pin drop at Talladega I forget where Earnhardt started the race but it didn’t take long for him to get to the front He had no doubt the fastest car that day Until him and Ernie Irvin, and sterling Martin got together and I had never witnessed a car unpacking the wall with such force and after the smoke had cleared I was thinking the worst and everyone else was thinking the same thing because it went from being so loud you had to yell at the person standing next to you To being so quiet that you could have heard a pin drop Then they announced they cut Earnhardt out of his car and the only thing wrong with him was I think he broke his collarbone On top of all of this The following week he captured the pole for one of the two road races they race every year I can’t remember if it was Sonoma in California Watkins Glen in New York But it blew me away that he had just broken his collarbone the week before and now he’s sitting on the pole for a road course race Me and my brother and four or five other friends used to camp out at every Atlanta race and Talladega for ten years in a row I was at the Atlanta race when he beat Bobby LaBonte for his last win in Atlanta He won ten times in Atlanta as well as TalladegaTo me he dominated Atlanta because of how he would make every other driver look like they was stuck in 3rd gear It used to blow my mind how good he was at Atlanta I think it was one of the 1986 races there win he literally lapped the whole field I think Rusty Wallace was the only other car that was able to stay on the lead lap and he pretty much lapped everyone in one in the last race of the year in 1989 When Rusty won his championship and he dominated both races their in 1990 After he passed away I didn’t even want to go back to the race tracks Until You started your four in a row win streak in Talladega But after you quit driving the number 8 car for DEI I quit going to the race tracks all together It wasn’t the same anymore and now since they have screwed up the rules of NASCAR like they have I hardly ever even watch it on tv anymore NASCAR will never be the same without the name Earnhardt in it I remember when Alan Kiki and Dave Allison passed and Richard Petty‘s grandson, but it wasn’t the same as the 2001 Daytona 500 I don’t even like to think about that day

@@johntalley6028 dang, too bad u didn't grab it back then lol, that thing would of been awesome, There's a guy in my little town and he got a Darrell Waltrip 88 car.. he says its real and back in the day his buddy bought it from junior Johnson and it was all smashed up, he said junior sold them the car and fenders and stuff to fix and they did, and his friend died it something and left it to him.. I kinda believe him cuz he's a old dude and seems like he wouldn't lie,, but I also think him and his buddy just tried to build a old monte Carlo into a race car and didn't know what to do with it so they just painted it up like a old junior Johnson owned dw car lol.. idk I can't really tell if it was really raced or not.. It looks like it was

I'm not nearly old enough to remember any of them in their actual racing days, but the 8 Nova, 2 Monte Carlo and 3 Wrangler cars are my favorites (along with the iconic black 3 of course) I buy every tshirt I find of them.

If UA-cam allowed a GIF mine would be the cat vigorously shaking his head no, no, no because I think we all know when Dale Jr does anything concerning NASCAR's past, present or even future it's nothing to do with any network. His heart is always, how can I make our sport better. How can I draw back the old school racer while also bringing in the new fan. Anybody that Dale Jr knows his blood bleeds NASCAR.

I heard Bill Elliott’s Coors Thunderbird and David Pearson’s Mercury Cyclone didn’t get much tv time before the Cup race either. I know they have to pay the bills but the sport isn’t going to gain any new fans or please any of the current fans by shoving commercial after commercial down everybody’s throat at the expense of quality tv coverage.

To Mike's point, the same issue happened when RCR had Dale's 3 car that he won his last race in at Taledega. Very little coverage. In fact, only RCR go pro cameras had any real footage. Very disappointing.

Jr. got one thing wrong. The car wasn’t the star. His dad was. 20 years on and he’s still the name that all other drivers are measured against and the one all the fans miss. I’m sure it was good for everyone to see that car make laps that day.
