Tommy Baldwin's Stand That He Has 5 Tightened Lugnuts - 2000 Global Crossing at the Glen

- A fascinating storyline in the 2000 Global Crossing at the Glen involved Ward Burton. During Ward's final scheduled pit stop, a NASCAR official pointed at the left rear tire noting that there was a loose lugnut. This started a LONG plead from crew chief Tommy Baldwin that all 5 lugnuts were tightened. He pulled on the official so he can go to the pit box and watch the video. The NASCAR official was undeterred; he felt he had a loose lugnut.
The caution came out for Mike Bliss's engine failure. This provided an opportunity for NASCAR to provide what I thought was a fair compromise. Ward has to come down pit road under caution and both NASCAR and the team can look at the affected tire and determine if there was a loose lugnut. If all five lugnuts were tight, no one is allowed to touch the car, and Ward resumes in fifth position. If there was at least one loose, he will have to go to the end of the longest line. He actually missed coming in when he was supposed to due to the arguing in the radio, thus causing Ward to receive the black flag.
At the end, the NASCAR official was right. Ward had a loose lugnut. They went ahead and changed tires. But, he restarted the race at 33rd position. He would finish 22nd.
This video included parts of the satellite feed broadcast. I included a clip where Bob, BP, and Ned try to figure out what a person is grilling. BP thought it was hot dogs. Bob thought it was vegetables. I think that whatever it is, it was left on the grill too long - the food look burnt lol.

Everything about this video makes me realize just how much I miss watching/listening to a race back then.
Thanks.
I got 5 on it
Slapper💯
Let's go half on a sack!
Good ole days of satellite TV when you got to hear the commentators during the commercial
After being grabbed and yelled at by the crew like that I bet that official felt like a badass when they found out he was right
3 of the best race broadcasters calling this race.
Should have said 4 of the best. Forgot about Dr Jerry.
Good ole days of Winston cup raceing 🏁🏎💪🫡👍👌
Racing*
The end 😂
Lmfao… made everyone in the booth starving after they zoomed in on that.
😂🤣
You could tell Bob was salivating... bell pepperrrrr....😅
Ward Burton and Tommy Baldwin were a great match. Bill Davis Racing. Hated seeing Ward leave the sport so early.
I love the old days of the commercial satellite-feed commentary that wasn't meant to be heard on broadcast... we'd never hear Bob Jenkins say "that was dumb!" About Ward not pitting.
I love the official at 9:03 trying not to grin....
1995 rockingham they did the same to Earnhardt. Cost him a win
What case was he pleading? The official is literally standing there looking at the wheel without 5 nuts on it.
"Ohhhh, Thank God!" ~the official probably
Back when it was fun to watch a race. Now it's the commercial 500
There were like 3 commercial breaks edited out of this clip.
Would go on to finish 22nd.
Those officials uniforms are great.
Great raw feed
I gotta wonder if NASCAR would have offered that same deal today.
Best broadcast and feels like NASCAR!!!
Nostalgia
Man to have all those people screaming at you, people talking into headset, the noise of the cars. How did that official not have a nerves breakdown? In that situation I probably would have gave in to pressure and reversed my call/penalty!
Eh they're used to it. They usually don't send the new guys/easier intimidated guys to the pit road positions.
I miss nascar
Classic ❤
With the single lugnut, do teams ever change just 2 tires anymore? If refuelling still takes about as long as it has for many years, I don't see a 2 tire strategy as the advantage it used to be.
They sometimes still change two tires. The advantages aren’t quite as big as they were before with the 5 lug nut wheels due to the shorter pit times, but it still is a key tactic to gain track position.
It's due to fuel. If they could move more fuel faster they would absolutely do two tires more. The way things are now, they have gotten so good at changing the modern tire that pit stops almost always come down to fueling times.
Motorsports around the world uses 1 lugs
Just think a few yrs later nascar gave up on lug nutz and some crews would put 3lugs on for the race but last stop would put the 4th and leave off the 5th cuz nascar changed rules about the lugs to as long as you have 4 on at end of race then went back to have to have all five and tight and would check them all at end of race to now only 1 lug per tire and they still can't get that tight lol
This was an example of NASCAR doing the right thing.
When your looking right at it, it’s hard to miss.
just needed to be the black #3, then they would have thrown a caution just to give him his initial spot back
A rare occurrence of nascar doing the right thing
I love Tommy? I hope he’s doing well and getting better!!!
Before they had to wear helmets.
