I have been seeing a couple of other vids suggested of a couple other guys doing their interpretation of the 12s for 2k. I am looking forward to seeing the projects out on the track..... Well THAT was an interesting episode and I agree about the "Lincoln Locker" versus Mini spool, You have to put a lotta heat into them to make good welds plus the smell is bloody awful :-) Noice Aussie Ford diff lesson too! Oh and you cant toast marshmallows on burning diff flames, they taste bloody awful .....................
I wouldn’t be too worried about no oil in that diff, I’d say Jolly’s probably drain most of the fluids before they put their cars out for parting. 21:58 reminds me of the video with the woman using a set of vernier caliper as a centre punch! 😂😂😂 You got to do what you got to do Scotty. Cheers Pat

Swapping tools at the breakers . It's stupid but I love doing this. Just don't borrow them off the yard if it's a muddy one. Saw a guy spend an hour wandering about looking for the bit he borrowed once. Shame I wasn't there for anything interesting. Was only grabbing a rear caliper for the family shitbox. Back in the old days that “size” bolt usially had the 3/4” hex but of course the 19mm socket is basically the same so 19mm became popular. But 18mm is everywhere in the modern era especially on Falcons.
You're probably right about heat transfer weakening the axles. Since you have it all apart, put the "spider gears" back in place, slide in the axles to line everything up and giver a couple of quick tacks. Slide the axles back out, turn the welder up and go full send
Just for further knowledge, 28 spline was available before VL, no idea about other Commies or Vals etc but XD/XE factory 5.8L had 28 spline, it is well documented. I wasted my time in 95 pulling out the short axle out of my 25 spline LSD XF for a mate (it didn't like a grumpy 351) , before the times of everyone owning a mobile phone, left it in his shed next to the 28 spline short axle out of the XD Ghia 5.8L housing he was shortening, massive difference in axle diameter size without having to count splines, you can not mix them up.
@@blownhemi - off the line will be hopeless while top end will also be hopeless. 3.23:1 seems right for off the line and top end (I'm guessing 3rd gear at 300meters) which means top end speed could easily hit 200+, the issue then is the BTR artificial speed limiter.
@@blownhemi - good to know you are on top of that, the next time would be the tail shaft, they are thin walled in the AU for weight purposes in the live axle 6 cyl versions, not saying its an issue, just be aware of it which I'm sure you are already.
just on that I recall Zane with his EA project build had the tail shat rip through the floor pan of the EA when doing dyno testing, so its a reminder to be aware of that. My understanding is the EA though AU its pretty much the same spec tail shaft.
Ford Australia were using 3.23:1 for any EA Falcon (S1, S2 and the 30th anniversary spec which is almost a S3 spec) that was optioned with the 3.9L MPEFI (so the Ghia & S-Pack had it standard also LTD). The 3.2/3.9L TBi versions had at first 2.92:1 due to the 3--speed auto (or 2.72:1 for the 5-speed manual) then got 3.08:1 when the 4-speed auto arrived in September 1989 and so did the 5-speed manuals. The ED "XR" range scored 3.45:1 final drive and that pretty much stayed the same right up till the introduction o the 5-speed auto and then 6-speed ZF in I think the BF Mk 2? If you have "control blade IRS" set up Falcon (so BA onwards) you should be able to use the Territory AWD (so 1994 till the end of the petrol AWD versions in 2012) differential which were 3.73:1 not many figured that out, there is also the 3.31:1 final drive version the RWD Territory used.

Nice slide hammer. Was wondering why you weren't opting for a CIG locker. Sounds like when you have welded them in the past you have put to much weld on one side and pulled the splines out of alignment leading to the broken axles. Better to be safe than sorry for $40.
I went from 3.23 to 3.45 in my t5 el gli and although the car wasn't neck breaking it made the car so much nicer in traffic shortening the gears up, less clutch work in traffic etc Would it be a tenth on the 1/4? Or more?
I think the people that are looking for ways to get around the rules and look for every little loophole to gain an advantage should have a look at themselves, what are they actually trying to achieve because everyone will know what they have done

Au tradesman ute is also a 3.45 not sure if it was all of them. Mine is a 5speed. I took it out to put in an lsd and was surprised it was a 345. I put a 323 in cause it is lsd and cause the old one is fuvked. But I don't like the 323 ratio.
If a well know to the public person like yourself was too organise a 12,s for 2k mini series, It could be a big hit and provide good UA-cam content. Run it as a DYO format series for 12 to 13 second cars only, with say 4 events in a year with only bragging rights for the winner. Drag racing has become super expensive with many fast cars these days , the 12,s for $2k concept would allow people to have fun with cars at a moderate cost and not have to worry about looking to slow to compete. I think that many more cars would be built if there were to be more than 1 event to participate in, its a lot of work for just 1 day.. Many people have missed the point of your challenge, You cant build a turbocharged LS1 or 5.0 litre V8 for $2k unless you already own the parts and or use creative interpretation on their value , nor car you buy a usable V8 commodore car for $2.K anymore. At the end of the day , as long as everyone's having fun everyone is winning
here's the thing: GMH Kingswood (so HQ to HZ and technically WB and WB II up to 1984) with the 3-speed trimatic (or traumatic old timers will remember that) with the 3.3L had a diff ratio of 3.36:1 with the V8 actually having the "highway" diff ratio 3.08:1 (re: more top end speed). When the VB Commodore arrived (no matter what engine (so 2.8L, 3.3L, 4.2L and 5.0L) or transmission re: manual (4-speed M21) or trimatic auto) they all had 3.08:1 diff ratio. That changed with the VL Commodore as the 4th gear over-drive (from memory 0.68:1) so GMH when back to 3.36:1 diff ratio for the VL NA and Turbo while the 4.9L (30ci) with the 3-speed trimatic stayed with the again 3.08:1 diff, I think the reason being is that with the VL most people would drive with the "over-drive" re: POWER switch off (switching POWER on would mean locked to 3rd gear), when the VN arrived due to the V6 having so much torque (remember in 1988 280Nm at 1,800rpm was huge) GMH went back to 3.08:1 diff ratio for V6 and V8. It was not until 1992 again when GMH played around with the diff ratio this time for the V8 which had by then IRS, again no matter what transmission (auto or manual) GMH opted for 3.27:1 diff ratio while the V6 remained at 3.08:1. GMH did play around with 3.45:1 diff ratio for the V6 Supercharger and some V8 setups from VT through VZ also for the Crewman models. The 3.08:1 diff stayed around in the V6 until the new series V6 (so VZ) with 5-speed auto that said I don't recall what they went to and with the 6-speed auto they went to moon-shot final drive ratio which I think was the same as Ford Falcon with the ZF 6-speed so 2.52:1 ??? or was that 2.72:1.

At 7:09 …. When you’re heaving on the diff put it on a pallet rather than jackstands …. At 7:52 … to get the cover off better to get a plastic putty knife for $2 and hammer it in to break the seal rather than use a pry bar and gouge the thing. Jolly’s is a nice yard to work in but expensive … nuthin’ beats the fun of Pinch a Part mud and meeting nice people from Boronia and Bayzie.
My commodore diff is sitting on stands as we speak. A pallet sounds nice and fancy, and I think id have just enough space. But where does your average person get one ? lol Any other suggestions?

I loosen my crown wheel bolts first before pulling axles find it easier than struggling on the bench

Is the cross shaft diameter the same in the spool? If so, machine it in your lathe.

B/W diffs meant I could pull a EL Falcon LSD centre and slide it straight into a centura until a taxi does a hit & run

At 7:09 …. When you’re heaving on the diff put it on a pallet rather than jackstands …. At 7:52 … to get the cover off better to get a plastic putty knife for $2 and hammer it in to break the seal rather than use a pry bar and gouge the thing.
Jolly’s is a nice yard to work in but expensive … nuthin’ beats the fun of Pinch a Part mud and meeting nice people from Boronia and Bayzie.

My commodore diff is sitting on stands as we speak. A pallet sounds nice and fancy, and I think id have just enough space. But where does your average person get one ? lol

@@cpzmelbs Oh … yeah take anything with diffs or pressing on side bearings or shims to an expert …. there is no chance Scotty has welded up a million diffs, his technique with tools is funny bad to watch at times.
