- Over the years I've had many cars, some have been memorable for their awesomeness, some have been memorable for the pain they've caused me. But they've all had an impact on my life.

Scotty sounds like we both had a very similar start in life. In 1975 I was 10 and we moved onto 10 acres in the country. Like you I experience all the joys that went with a dry dunny. Like you we had no electricity or water for several years. Mum cooked and boiled water on a wood stove outside. Getting washed for school was typically a lick and a promise in a metal basin, which was a real joy in winter. Our first "house" was about the size of yours which six of us slept in at first. My first bedroom (another shack) was built out of corrugated iron and only just big enough for my brother and my bunk beds, which we shared it with a kero fridge. Quensland summers are real pleasant in a tin shack. But despite some challenges we survived. Like you I got to buy some cheap bikes and cars and thrashed them around the back paddock. We might have started off dirt poor, but eventually through some seasonal work mum and dad got enough money together to start buying some Besser blocks. Took a few years but dad eventually built us a proper house with electricity and everything.
Wow, very similar upbringing by the sounds of things. I didn't think there were many of us in that era
@@blownhemi I had to laugh when you mentioned emptying the dunny can. The look on your face said it all. I think you have to had to have done it to truly appreciate that look. We might not have had much, but we had freedom in abundance. I even laughed when you talked about riding motorbikes without a license. I drew the short straw when a country cop from about 30 klms away nabbed me on my Honda XL 100 when I was about 14. Got the third degree and told never to do it again. So I didn't, I stuck to the back paddock till I got my learners at 17. How's this for ironic, the same cop gave me my open bike license. I had to ride down a dirt road till I passed a house, hitting 100kph, do a u turn and be back in one minute on a Suzuki GSX400. I did it in 54 seconds. Parked the bike and went inside and wrote out the license. Like you we shot guns and spent most of our time under the bonnet, building engines, and generally fixing cars. Cars were cheap back then. Many bought just to be stripped.
I would love to sit down and listen to you talk all night Scotty you the man
While I love all of your videos. This is by far the best. No BS no fanfare. Just good old fashioned yarns, Plus you've owned some bloody cool cars! Keep it going! I would like to see more of these type of videos!
@@martyburgess341 thanks mate
Mate, you tell a bloody good yarn. What a great lineup. Could listen to you for hours 👍
I was honestly sceptical after initially seeing it was over an hour long, however I ended up watching every second. Absolutely fantastic!
@westaircompressors thanks mate, yeah I'm also hesitant about longer videos, but I'm glad you stuck with it.
What a great story Scotty. Could relate to a lot of it.
Enjoy a coffee on me.

Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for the donation.
You're not a rambler you're a raconteur. And a good one to boot!
Great story Scotty - I've had about 250 cars over the years, it's an addiction. I was always first at the newsagent on Trading Post day and on the weekend
Can relate to regretting some of the things we didn't keep or take care of back in the day. Be good to have them now...
Despite watching all your stuff over the years I've never really been into drags - only done it a couple of times - but it's great to see another bloke who learned the hard way that the best way to do things is to do them yourself.
Thanks for the trip down memory lane. :)
@@mahcooharper9577 250! Wow!
@@blownhemi haha like I say it's a bit of a sickness. No drinking, no smoking, no drugs, no kids, no life - just playing with cars all my life.
No regrets ;)
V6 Vengeance was my favourite magazine project to follow when I was a young fella. Have recently started following you Scotty, and never realised that was your car! Awesome
Yeah the old SC commodore days. Eddie tassones VH being on top of the drag cars leader board for years. rajab, bresciani, maatouks rb/vl workshop wars. When 600hp was a rocket, not a daily.
I could listen to this all day! LOVED IT! scotty MOOORREEEE! Next time i get into a barney with an Ev owner im going to direct them to this video! THIS is WHAT a car enthusiast IS!
Shes all good Scotty , its like we are sitting there with you . The best part is you have done what a lot of would like to do.
Great memories Scotty !!! 😜👍🇦🇺
Scotty, you should get another diesel gemini for a project but do a 4JJ1 motor!
Im 40, ive had about 30 cars over the years, mainly falcons and a few v8 holdens, first car was a ke70 corolla with the flat nose, bought it off a teacher at school for $50 cash and $50 worth of kmart vouchers haha, had 6 months rego was a 5 speed, fitted XF front seats , tacho, stereo, resprayed in monza red with my grandfather, didnt really appreciate it enough at the time as i was always more of a ford boy, i end up giving it away. Wish i still had it but thats life. Poor little 4k had its neck rung but kept on going.
We enjoying tales from the tailgate.
Cheers mate.
4jj gem has been on my mind for years even at stock boost the torque would make powerskid like crazy
So many good tales and moments, QLD, racing & Bon Jovi in the rain was probably my pick, loved it start to finish
@@ufi123 Bon Jovi in the rain in Brisbane was an experience. Then we drove out to Ipswich in the V8 Pacer soaking wet and raced the next day at Willowbank. I went a few rounds but didn't win.
I like the hour a day idea gives me motivation to finish off a couple of my own projects

Great Video. Wonderful memories. I'm 73, and I remember all those cars when they were new.
Scottie, really enjoyed this episode mate, loving the back story
Love the story and the pictures of your past cars Scotty, keep up the great work you are a true Aussie legend.
Thanks mate, glad you liked it
Once again Scotty what a true Aussie bloke you have had some nice cars an done well with them keep good work up
Great stories Scotty. Makes me miss my old cars. Oh well can’t keep em all. Always have the memories. 👍
Absolutely loved this video! Also enjoyed all the old photos of the cars. My favourite has to be the supercharged V8 Charger, what an awesome car! Glad to hear it has survived in one piece. I just discovered recently my neighbour across the road has a V8 manual VE Valiant ute that has been sitting outside for several decades, i feel like i need to go save it after seeing all your old Vals.
Love your stories mate 👍.
Great episode, reminds me of the 50+ cars i've had and similar stories of regrets when things were bought, wrecked, sold, etc. VG coupe i had i sold for $3500 (bought a few months earlier on ebay for $3000 and spent some money fixing a few things). i guess it's better than never doing it, the memories live on. that car i drove home on an unreg permit and opened the "vent" for cool air and got a bunch of gumleaves and a redback nest on my bare legs at 100kmh haha.. exhilarating experience!
@@deankdx ahh yes, that's always a favourite. Those bloody vents
Loved hearing your story Scotty. Helped me reminisce my own similar story of cars and life. Very cool.
So cool Scotty! Love it I could also listen to your car stories for a while day
Hahaha that was a great yarn, I was just telling my young bloke about the Heathcote coppers you talked about last week and how I'd try and creep though in 89-90 at 1 or 2 in the morning with straight cut timing gears on my way to Bendigo
Great video mate.... loved it.
You're AP6 story reminds me of a guy I used to work with at Superformance. He had a HQ Statesman with a big block / 8-71. Had ridiculously massive treaded tyres on the back and a spool in the rear so if he tried to turn a corner you could hear it screaming in protest. Had the 80's / 90's blower hunt going on. It was one of those cars as well. It couldn't drive by without you turning your head and your jaw dropping. Fiberglass front end. It was basically a drag car he was driving around the street. From memory he had Vic rego on it. Think it was featured in Street Machine way back when.
Awesome video scotty
Awsome storys mate, reminds me of my up bringing. My first paddock basher was a datsun 240k, man it went hard. Keep up the content, really enjoying it.
Thanks for the stories Scotty. Brought back some great memories here also. :)
Great video mate. I was amazed that so much of your early life’s experiences around cars and life in general mimicked mine in so many ways. Brought back some good memories and some not as good 😊
Always interesting Scotty!!
Good stuff mate great content 👌
Great story. It was very interesting scotty. My old man was also a massive valiant and ford fan and was disappointed I was into commodores. Well being a true bushy from white cliffs, he finally came around to a vs wagon until his death in 2017. He said to me, why he never considered them as a bush rig, easy to drive, service and parts everywhere. Losing your dad is the hardest time and to have a car is a great memory.
Sorry for your loss, mate. The real bushy blokes are an endangered breed
Kelly chargers ! Haven't heard that in many years. Great content mate 👌
Right up there with the B.F Goodrich that were all the go.
My husband used to work for Brad’s speed shop in the 80’s/ 90’s. He saw a lot of cars come into brads shop.
@@CatVMango I bet, it was supposed to be THE workshop in the 90s
Awesome stories, love this stuff. Would never have picked that you owned a Datsun at one point! My first car was a poo-brown 200B - like your 180B but with 20 more problems as they like to say.
But honestly, it got me from Sale to Churchill 5 days a week for a couple of years and other than doing a fuel pump once it never let me down. Oh and there was the time that the entire drivers side wiper decided to eject itself from the vehicle around Traralgon during a massive storm, that was fun.
I love the video. You certainly have had an interesting history. It's great to hear and to learn more about you. Keep up the great work.
Glad you enjoyed it!
We all make decisions that we feel right at the time. Love the campfire yarns Scotty. Keep up the great work
Loving the background story episodes
That was fantastic to listen to mate. I would love to sit with you for a day a listen to it all.
Great video! Very enjoyable! Cool to listen to the history behind all the cars! So good!
Glad you enjoyed it!
That was a great timeline Scotty !
The ole one that got away, I have a few regrets myself 🤙🏼
Great watch and stories! Cheers Scotty
I always wished that i had kept my old cars too.
Good to hear your story Scotty.
Your silver RT 770 Charger mock up was the best looking car 👌
It was awesome
Fuck yeah Scotty. Have been looking forward to this story! Thanks for sharing it big dog🤘
Great video mate 👍
Great story scotty A mate had a centura at trade school, same colour with a poo brown interior ,That thing went like a cut cat.The silly things we did LOL🇦🇺👍👍
I had a mild VK 308 Calais in the 90s and this Centura was giving me a bit of a hard time so at the next set of lights we both went for it and I thought holy shit wtf? I was relatively quick but this thing just got me 😂😂
Awesome video well done
Madness! Same era ere Scotty, I remember that charger✌️! I’m in horning sea park now…. Lived on cowpasture rd back then, bro had a Barbados green charger pro stock bonnet scoop, charge this on the back window…cortina’s everywhere, Chrysler day, swap meets in austral on the rose farm…. Good times
Loved this
Great yarn Scotty. My fist car was a standard Vanguard, bristling with power & petrol was around $ 1.00 a gallon. (NZ)
Wow, $1 per Gallon
12:39 I remember working at the servo after school and the occasional diesel Gemini would come in and the owners would brag about getting 55 mpg easily. And that was with the old clatter-bang diesels with zero fancy bolt ons.
Scotty, loved the chat! Listened whist working on a project in the shed. 🎉🎉
@@GRUMPYOLDSURVEYOR awesome
It has been interesting.
I used to listen to the stories an uncle of mine told about the adventures he had.
I was fortunate to to travel with him (from Perth) to the Lake Goldsmith Steam rally in 1996
Scotty, I really enjoyed that episode. I’m not a V8 guy, but you had me hooked. I was surprised that you had a 180B, had a job in Dapto, and mentioned a name from the past, Chris Hillman. I met him at a Summernats in the early 90’s, and he ended up sourcing me an engine transplant and setting up a Haltech for me (when you needed two computers). If your ever back up north, would love to talk cars with you over a few beers, maybe at Dapto Leagues Club! Cheers Phil
bloody good story of growing up dirt poor then working your way into suburbia. Horningsea Park wow i use to hoon around cowpasture road when that area was all 5 acre lots and a narrow arse road. I grew up in liverpool, all the burbs you mentioned around that area i remember all too well, first car was an AP6 "big block" 225 leaning tower of power lol, then a HK GTS monaro. back in the day there was car meets on a thursday night in Bonnyrigg for drags to be arranged down at lynn parade all this was back in the 1980's. if i get to meet you i would enjoy sitting back chewing the fat of the fun days of growing up.
As mostly a bike person myself. Yes family and priority takes presidents. I crashed my dream car at 19 and luckily survived, a week later my mates dad let me ride his pride and joy (916 ducati), dumb? Bunt? But now in my middle age I miss all the goodness, and rottenness too.
Great video mate
Love ya work Scotty. I got that Aus Study too back in the day, and one of my good mates first car was a good ole deisal Gemini.
It was great to have money to buy Street Machine and those kinds of things
What a bloody ripper yarn!
Another great yarn mate. Same as me, can talk cars for ages.
@@paulrutley366 haha, thanks. There's so much more I could have talked about, but I figure an hour was long enough.
That was a great video mate!
@@EnviXR81 thank you
Absolutely love your story i still own my first car a 65 mini in the shed waiting to be painted and I had a cm glx in yellow (parents car which became mine) wish i still had it and I purchased a stolen and recovered lx a9x with no tags but when I got it home I found them under the carpet
Took my mrs for a drive and she got car sick in the back(hatch) so she made me trade it in for a new charade it's still sitting in my driveway until she replaces it with a lx hatch 😢
That was great! More of this!! I’m pretty sure I remember your purple Charger in Street Machine!
Thanks mate, my Charger was Silver though
@@blownhemi it had a purple stripe then? I remember that page in Street Machine though!
@@blownhemiok, scratch that! I have no idea why I thought it had purple on it! Lol
Great watch mate 👍
Great memories and well told . As someone else mentioned, I think you should seriously think about a podcast .
Like most others here...... Great listening to your life in cars.. Feels like we are around a campfire with a few cans having a boys night.
Regrets?? Paddock bashing a HT Monaro out Kurnell sandhils n boat harbour beach back in 83 and then torching it once it wouldnt go anymore.
@brucebird133 oh wow! Yeah, Kurnell holds some memories for me as well. Took my Brumby out there a couple times, but the most memorable moment was when my mate took a few of us out there late one night in his FJ45 Shorty and said "Let's have some fun!" And 5sec later we were on our side. That was a long night!
Sounds like an Old Car bloke life well lived thus far Scott :-)
Hey Scotty, Great video. I love these stories about different cars and such. In the future would you ever consider buliding a "Modern" commodore such as vt-vy
@Clarkey1477 it's possible. Those cars are getting older now, and I was driving them as Press cars when they were brand new so I have fond memories of thrashing the latest HSV, and SS Commodores from those times.
Yes bin back the day.
Great stuff Scotty! Would have been worth a few cold ones & a BBQ over listening to it all. I used to live in Sydney's Eastern Suburbs & my dad at the time had a '74 Ford Escort MkI XL1300 & that was what got me started as a 5 yr old into cars. Dad also had a '51 HRD Vincent Black Shadow & a '63 Triumph Bonneville T120 so that got me into motorbikes as well. Every weekend was tinkering with cars & bikes. The Escort got written off & dad bought a '77 Datsun 180B brand new & he had that for 10 years. Only rust from living next to a beach killed it. I learnt to drive that 180B when my feet could touch the peddles. In 1980 we got new neighbours & he was into Holdens & Chryslers. About every 2nd month he'd have different cars & of course dad & him got on like a house on fire mucking around with cars on the weekends. That was when I got started learning how to fix cars. We used to go to a wreckers in Matraville & buy Holden engines, strip them down, rebuild them & sell them. When I officially got my licence, I bought a '72 Holden HQ wagon with 3 on the tree. Every panel on it had more hits than Elvis, It was olive green with tan bench seats. It was used to carry mine & my mates surfboards. We used to travel up near Forster on surfing trips. I drove that HQ wagon to work in Pitt St where world square was still being built. One day a foreman came into work & asked if anyone owned a green Kingswood wagon. I said it was mine & he said, I've got some bad news. I thought a truck might have backed into it but it turned out that a section of prefab wall came loose off a crane & squashed the front end of the wagon flat as a pancake. The foreman wanted to keep it quiet & asked me how much I paid for it. I lied & said I bought it for $1000 (actually $500) & they paid me the money. I bought mum's Datsun 200B with it & she went & bought a Suzuki Vitara Hardtop with it. The car stories could go on & on & it's been great listening to yours & reading comments.
@1969Risky thanks mate, they were the good old days
@@1969Risky getting your car flattened is a bummer
@@blownhemi I was trying to stop laughing at the time when I saw it. As soon as they gave me the cash, they disposed the wagon quick smart. The World Square site at the time was having major problems & they didn't want this added.
Great segment mate, I feel those times were the pinnacle of street cars. Now it’s just throw 50k on a Barra or an ls and you’re still the slow one.
I really love your channel mate. I can appreciate your hard work and determination to get in your current position. Your a true Aussie.
Maybe at some point you could do a build that guys a gals with very limited funds could build. I’m on a tight budget and the stuff I see on UA-cam is simply not possible. Keep living the dream.
Love your show.

The Things we know now and the cars we all had. We need a bigger shed.
Bit of a long video but my favourite part was hearing you hunting WRX's with a V8 wagon. I don't think there is any V8 owner that hasn't done that myself including. Dam that was fun.
@@1toonhead yep, but how many were successful? Those WRXs were pretty quick in the late 90s
Good stuff🎉
I believe v6 vengeance was Australia's quickest v6 commy back in the day if my memory serves me correctly.
It's funny you mention people didn't know what to do with the barras too, I had one back in 2015 so not too long ago but long enough ago that no builder or tuner wanted to touch it, they said there is nothing you could do with them, a couple years later and they blew up and became the must have engine with big number getting pushed out of them haha
@backyard_mechanic it wasn't the quickest, but it was in the top five. But yeah, people forget that the early days of Barra's were full of unknowns
Very familiar stuff Scotty, and interesting ✌
Very cool the valiant life there s only two i have not owned R series panel van
Awesome video mate, well done.
I live in Howlong just west of Albury and was a member in the Chrysler car club with Rod Taylor and the likes for years.
I have had some great Valiant’s too over the years but they have moved on and I don’t have any. My VE factory v8 sedan is in Bendigo and my 1972 DG Dodge Phoenix is in Sydney.
I brought the Phoenix in Albury when I worked for Baker Mitsubishi in Olive Street.
I brought a 770 Hardtop in 1997 for $1,500 VF and had it for a year then sold it for $2000 . It’s still in the same condition as I sold it in Albury today. Original and untouched. I would like to buy it back.
My first Hardtop was a VG and I brought it from Howlong but I lived in the King valley. I restored it to put on the road on my P’s and enjoyed every minute in it.
I would like to know what happened to it.
I still have the unique cars advertisement of my VG
I do remember some of your cars at the show but failed to know you were local.
I wish I had known that because as you know Valiant people are hard to come by.
Keep up the good work
That rt was bueatifull 😍
@@snapped4433 yep, I still miss it
@blownhemi yeah typically I'm not a fan of that body style but the grey with the black stripe and the red grill surround looked mint. My dads had a phew regretful sales. He had a numbers matching xd esp v8. All original with reasonably low kms and sold it for nexto nothing. But he still has his first car ever his xd fairmont originally a 6 cylinder auto but its now a v8 stroker fully built cant remember the trans, 9 inch rear and its practically now a drag car. It's not registered currently and it just sits in the back of the shop with a dead holly sniper efi system ☹️

Surprised you lived in Horningsea Park Scottie, around the corner from me
I was at that rainy Bon Jovi concert too! :). 1994 or 95 ish
That's the one
There's quite a few cars that i should never have let go. It would have cost the marriage and ultimately they would have gone along with everything else I had. Every car bloke needs a chook shed and 400 acres to store their shit.
I know ya pain, Scotty. I drove a (at the time) 20-30 year old small tray truck on my learners over Hotham and Mt Beauty, with timber sticking out the back. Was not as fun a learning experience I expected it to be. Good stories though
@dmax9946 yeah, it's a good road but not one for old trucks or pick ups
Still a brilliant road for a good sports car. Unfortunately there is a fair bit of roadworks and upgrades along the way now
@dmax9946 Yeah, I went through there in a HSV GTS coupe back in 2003, just a few months after massive bushfire, the road was melted to shit. I'll have to tell that story on the channel one day. It's a beauty.
I know what you mean about too many projects, recently bought a pair of VE/VF utes for $500 just so I had a couple of slant 6s to play around with for an Essex/Hudson/Terraplane hotrod project. One of them has gone to scrap, because she folded in half when I finally got both doors open, but the other has decent bones, so I'm not so sure she deserves to head that way, and then my brother in law has suggested a big road trip where we all buy cheapish cars and have a crack at a big trek with a bit of off roading so now I'm bench building a lifted XF Ute with a winch on the front, and that's not even considering the V8 XP falcon in my shed that hasn't had a wiring harness in it for 2 years...
I remember having one of those micro sleep moments when I was young and dumb. Only I snapped to just as I was beginning to swing into the oncoming lane. I luckily lived in the sticks and not much traffic around in them days 😂
Fuck knows how I survived my youth. So many blokes I know got straight into worked cars from high school and so many of them got wrapped around trees and if anyone goes to the kooralbyn drags you’ll see a car hanging from a tree to remind people not to go nuts 😂
@honestpat7789 yeah, I don't know how we survived our youth sometimes
was good
The old diesel gemini , good for 51hp / 31kw . Yip would have been quite slow mate 🤣
Lol i like how you went from buying cars for 50 bucks for what would be classic aussie muscle to buying cars for a couple thousand to what prices are today. Youve definetly had some cool ass cars though.
That Charger was sweet Scotty! Classic fatness, grey with black R/T stripes, mmmmm, sexual. I once owned a "White Knight" Charger in the late 80`s it was Amarante Red with Centrelines. I was a second year Apprentice Fitter & Turner and loved proudly driving her to Tafe one day a week and mingling amongst other Apprentice Mechanics, Fitters etc in the carpark, smoking her Eagers leaving at the end of the day. I still remember the smell of the interior. 2 of my mates also had them at the same time. I ended up swapping mine for a 4 door HJ Monaro running a 350, other mate traded his for a 308 Premier and last mate wrote his off pissed. What a time in history that was. Wish I could go back.....
Wow
