- John from www.growingyourgreens.com/ shows you how he harvests and propagates Yacon, a edible tuber from the Andes you can eat raw. In this episode John harvests yacon and weighs the yield out of a 5 gallon nursery pot. In addition you will learn how to identify the yacon crown and how it can be divided into more plants. Finally you will learn what the yacon tastes like when John does a taste test.
My husband and I watched your video together. He was impressed by the information and presentation - you get a well deserved thumbs up from hubby! I am subscribed and always love your videos! I want to grow Yacons. Right now we have absolutely no room - we're in an apt with no balcony and the heat is high in winter and summer.
Aloha: I just harvested a plant I have been growing for two years here in Kihei, Maui, I did get about 10 really big tubers and a wonderful head to replant in the same pot (25 gal). Take care of yourself and hope to see you again here on Maui giving one of your great lectures.
Thank you - I just got a plant (3 shoots with leaned) from a natural food grocery - excited to see how it does!!
I am always amazed at the different foods you show me. I get so bored growing the same old things year after year. Thank you for showing me new things to try in my gardens in the future.
when storing the crown it is a good idea to leave some of the smaller tubers to provide nutrition to the plant
John is such a gem.
Hey John, I saw an old video of you from before you started G.Your Greens and it was explaining about how you saved your life eating raw. Can you do a video on that and explain how you decided to start gardening from that. Thanks so much!!!
Thanks for the update John.
Thank you, all and more of what I needed to know about growing yacon!
Hello from Houston Texas. I love your videos. and I always watching your videos
AWESOME video, very informative.
I live in Michigan, and planted these last spring.
Can't wait to see what happened underground.
Hopefully I can overwinter them for next year😁
Thanks again!
Sweeter than a "Granny Smith"? Anything is sweeter! Those apples are deliciously tart! LOL
Thanks, John. I'll be doing this with my Yacon tonight!
thanks.. great idea, i'll try this..
Very interesting, thanks
Wow dude I never seen anything like that. Interesting stuff. Thanks for sharing!
nice informative video. thanks!
Hello! Thank you for the informative and nice video 🌻 Your enthusiasm and humor is priceless 😃I have 4 plants in my poly tunnel. Hard to believe that the tubers i got last year survived very rough winter. They're gigantic now! I don't know how long should i wait until the harvest? Until the foliage turns brown? Best wishes and greetngs from western Ireland! 🤗🤗🌞🍀
nichols garden nursery dot com has them just search Yacon in the catalog search
Since they do not keep, John, how much time between first harvested plants and last? Start them a month apart, maybe?
Mine kept. Got fruit still here in may from last year. Stored in a bag.
Thanks John. Here in Qld Australia we just call it a YAK-on. If you like these have you tried Jicama? Even nicer I think.
how long is take ready harvest yacon?
thanks
where can we get seeds or roots to grow? look good
Didn't think about growing Jicama myself, I will have to try that.
Yacon
Where do you purchase a yacon crown?
Also, where do you get the yacon from?
yo john are any mallow flowers edible, i just want to know in case.
where can I get some seeds / rhizomes ?????
This was a very interesting episode! How would one find a start of the Yacon? I live in Ohio and would like to try to grow them. They sound like an excellent garden plant to sustain my plant-based diet.
Hello!
would You sell some to me some tubers. please?
I am located in Florida.
Many thanks.
is this the same as spanish Yuca?
they freeze very well.... oooh and dehydrate
You are mistaken when you say that you have to eat the yacon right away. It actually gets sweeter when you store it in a cool root celler and will continue sweetening for up to a month. I will check on a person who grows fields of the stuff for market and let you know how long they can be stored.
if stored properly they can store up to 9 months in good condition
We let our first crop sit out in the sun for a week then they lasted at least another two weeks while we ate them. They got sweeter the longer they sat.
I think they could last much longeras well.
Mine are always a bit bitter. Is that from eating the skin? I dont often peel my food.
Do they only grow in warmer climates like California?
No. They grow in England and here in Ireland 🇮🇪
Hi would you sell me the yacon and crosse . I am live in Los Angeles. Thanks
John, what email can I contact you to buy the Yacon please?
Just wondering how much you had to water and how regularly over the duration of it's growth? Thanks John!!
Regular works. They like water. Too much can crack the tubers though. But it takes a lot.
thanks,,,,,,
I was able to find some in Berkeley. But you should be able to ship these packed in dirt.
Fire ant quarantine prohibits mailing soil to/from certain states. Adds weight anyway. Sturdy box lined w aluminum foil shouldnt get too hot. Newspaper padding.
No, it is a different family.
please share where you bought the plants/tubers
BarbaraAL46 I have the rhizomes for the yacon im in swan view wa
Kimberley Rauchelle do you still have some?
Its the hair of the guys in the Matrix revolutions. The ship is called the Nebuchadnezzar. The alien things you said are just called The Machines.
Sentinels.
John, I think that is yuca. I like to boil it and eat it with a little sea salt and olive oil.
Nope. Look at the leaves.
do you grow your own weed?
thats definitely a Yacon, though Yucca roots do look almost identical
That looks like yuca root.
ive got the rhizome
While the Jicama root is great do be careful as to where you plant it. The root is edible but the beans it produces above ground are poisonous. If you have pets that may get at the plant be very, very careful where you plant it.
Not jicama. Yacon is different.
Yacon doesn't grow easily from seed.
all sold out of sun chokes
Informative session. My only suggestion is to desist the temptation to say GUYS. His overuse is an annoying distraction.
