Though unheard by many, this song - made popular by Iz Kamakawiwo'ole - was an anthem in Hawai'i when I was growing up during the 80s-90s. If you are not familiar with Hawai'i's history (pre/post overthrow) - I suggest you educate yourself and look it up.
I was lucky to be sent to Kaiapuni (Hawaiian immersion school) when I was young - it was a new adventure in learning, an immersion into the Hawaiian language where all day and all classes were taught in Hawaiian. Not a drop of English was spoken. We would cut and paste Hawaiian translations into science, history and math study books on weekends. We were the third class that ever was - 16 Guinea Pigs in a time when the revival of the Hawaiian language was a mission for the people of Hawai'i. At 5 years old, it took me less than a school year to become fluent in a language that my grandparents couldn't speak. At night, I would dream in Hawaiian. For 8 years, I considered Hawaiian to be my first language.
I've gone through many changes since - I switched to an english school in 7th grade. Quit Hula at 18. Moved to Los Angeles at 19. Became a starving musician at 20. Moved farther away to Kansas. But throughout those changes - the language, the culture, the koko (blood) - that never goes away. I look at my roots as an immovable mountain - when all is gone, I'll be found in you - still standing.

My girlfriend organized a Hawaii trip to the big Island, right in the middle of the city, for her birthday. Part of me hates the idea. I want to support Hawaiian sovereignty before I go take up space on that island, before I'm just another non-Hawaiian taking up space, sitting on hotel land in the city.

My partner and I (both mainlanders) recently had the opportunity to meet the people on the island Molokai - our first visit to Hawaii. It was an amazing and extremely humbling experience. We told each other we would never visit there again - unless we were invited by an actual native person.

I think many people miss the point when it comes to indigenous peoples. The land is your home. The land is sacred and part of you. It's not a neighbourhood or a town.. It's the actual dirt, trees, mountains and rivers. It's steeped in culture and is in your core being. I'm sorry this is happening and no body is protecting the actual native peoples right to live on their land with dignity.

You are a great artist. Been following you for a few years now. There is no doubt in my mind big things are waiting ahead for you.
As a Cherokee, and Scandinavian, and Irish. And ultimately I'm an American veteran. I cry every time I hear this song. But I've seen North Korea. And China. Ukraine and Russia are presidential playing grounds. So I have to wonder, what did I stop. And the one thing that scares me the most, is america falling apart because a few stupid rich people ruined it. I'm 40 years old, I spent 10 years in agony, mostly homeless, meeting the lowest scum on earth. On my own reservation. I'm finally recovering from spinal surgery. Almost ready to fight again and I hear this. What am I supposed to do?
