Who is here in 2024, with tears in their eyes besides me? With all the pain and loss and suffering scattered across all islands especially Lahaina, this song embodies all of it. And for Pearl Jam to embrace it and sing it for our islands at their concert, that is something really special... even if it was 2006, it resonates to this day, the power of this song....
We are lucky that someone was there illegally filming, otherwise there would be no record of this amazing tribute to Israel Kamakawiwo'ole and Hawaiians.
I was at this concert with my family. It was unbelievable. Speechless Edit: my dad was 76 at the time of this concert and he cried when the song started. I have the best memories of this concert.
Love this! Love that they honored the place then came to perform and honored their band mate. Gaspar is Hawaiian and from Hawai’i. No matter the pronunciation as much as the sentiment and tribute. They knew where they came to. I aloha Pearl Jam !
That song gives me chills every time I hear it, but when Pearl Jam did it, that warmed my hearts for them to show that much respect for the Hawaiian culture
@@lauragreaser3461 Hi, Most popularly sang by Israel Kaʻanoʻi Kamakawiwoʻole, also called Braddah IZ or just simply IZ, was a Native Hawaiian musician and singer. He passed in 1997 at age 38. Mahalo... \mn/
From what i understand. Nobody in attendance expected Pearl Jam to sing this song let alone give honor to this anthem of our State Moto. Respect beyond Respect to Da 'Aina by Pearl Jam. Our State of Hawai'i is the only State in the Union where BOTH the State Anthem and Moto are written entirely in a language other than English.
Just moved away from Hawaii for the first time in my life & was watching videos from home when I came across this... I'm blown away 1, that I somehow missed them coming through & 2 that they did this tribute. Amazing, and I'm sure Iz would approve 😊💕
Best thing I can hear when I get so many haoles around me in northern California, after I jammed with my Indian brada to a sacred old swim hole after I saw my first Hawaiian sista in the longest. Us rastas still jammin, thanks pearl jam. It was a big day today, glad to hear this fo first time. Aloha, we working here. Ahui hou
Just think of IZ lighting the match that is obviously still burning! Vedder may not get the pronunciation correct but the respect and homage is off the scale. Music is emotions and the imperfections make it better IMO. Best part of this is the audience reaction
I Ka Pono, to make right/just, was a concept my 2nd (Brazilian) wife was just discussing with me, because she has been utilizing a Westernized version of ho'oponopono for meditative healing (which she recently discovered on the internet)...I was somewhat amused when she explained to me the concept of ho'oponopono, considering that I lived for many years on The Big Island, & my first wife (RIP) was Native Hawaiian & she used to hang out in Makaha with her cousins & listen to Braddah Iz & his ohana play music at their family luaus...anyway, it got me to reminiscing about Hawai'i & this song in particular...so, naturally, I followed the rabbit hole of UA-cam, watching various versions of Braddah Iz playing the song, until I happened upon this version by Eddie Vetter & Pearl Jam, performed in Hawai'i...&, I really enjoyed it! Aloha, Bill
Blah, bitch. It's not a voice's ability. I am sure that Israel's voice can dig it up with Brit Pop or Grunge or whatever anytime. It is about Americans recognizing that Hawai'i has been annexed and doesn't belong. That was a great thing to do for an American band. And yes, I am not a big fan of Pearl Jam, but they're great musicians. Different genre.
Well this Hawaiian disagrees. It came from.the heart and it sounds like the crowd agreed that night. Besides that instrumentation was so good. Also, the keyboard player is from Hawaii (Roosevelt grad).

I watch it and cry every time.

Pearl jam standing with Hawaii is the most punk rock thing ever.
This is crazy!! I cant believe this happened. Hawaii 78 is one of the best hidden gems.
I was there, third row. Been thinking of this song a lot since the horrendous losses in the Maui wildfires. 💔
I was there that night I can only describe that moment in one word... Chills
yuup... EVERY WORD!! with the SL8R shirt..
So fukn heavy
An incredibly iconic moment in time captured forever....This is where YT really shines...To preserve something as special as this...forever.

Makes me cry. Heard that song ever Wednesday night down Kalapona.
Gives me chills. Great tribute.
Oh how wonderful. This song humbles me so much.

I was surprised to find he Eddie Vedder is a surfer, and the keyboardist is from Hawaii.

I got goosebumps as Eddie started singing. So much power 🤙🏽
I never knew these guys covered this song! I'm pretty impressed. Good job on a very difficult song/ shoes to fill.
My husband and I were there ❤️🙏🔥

I love Eddie for this as a blooded displaced hawaiian
I was supposed to go to this concert this night but had to work. Singing in Hawaiian giving me chicken skin
IZ R.I.P. !

I was there and wow. I remember when I heard the fiery few chords I thought wow, this punk song has the same intro as Hawaii ‘78!

It’s okay, but nothing like bratha Iz 🌺 RIP 🕊
Oh, Eddie stealing another song like Big Hard Sun. Eddie Cheddar is the grunge equivalent of Eric Clapton. Watch Iz instead
You can just say "I don't understand what a cover is"
Stfu, Eddie has a deep sentimental connection to Hawaii. It’s not hard to know why
He butchered it. Sad.
Nice attempt at a tribute but they should stick to what they do. OMG, Yuck!!
