this is perfect timing! My hair is half black, half red. Looks adorable but it's hard enough for me to stop being lazy and dye it one color, let alone being careful enough to do one on each side of my head! I have so much growth that I've decided it is time to remove the black and go all red, but I've been so nervous. Thanks for uploading this, it's really helped calm my nerves haha. Fingers crossed it goes well for me now!!
hi, shelly! i wish i knew about the color zap when i tried to do reddish blonde a few years ago. i went through more color than i should have before i finally went brown to stop the glowing radioactive red. i will say never pick a different hair color if you are depressed - never never never i think you look great! thanks for showing the whole process! have a wonderful day! ~k
Thanks!! It was of course learned the hard way 😂 I've had some hair disasters over the years, thank goodness before the advent of UA-cam and carrying cameras in our pockets!
“If I get a color or a haircut I don’t like, I don’t care.” Hahahaha this made me laugh hella loud. I’m the same way. My hair grows so fast that I don’t get crazy upset about it
Right!! I'm sure I'd feel differently if my hair grew slowly but it grows fast and it puts up with craziness and takes it pretty well :) I can't even tell you how many hair colors I've had in the past 4 1/2 years just on UA-cam.... never mind the rest of my life lol. The only color I've never done is green!
Also the same, my hairdresser hates me. I can go short super short, etc. and she hates me she says it every time in a loving way of course, cause it grows so fast. Its a blessing and a curse. LOL
Such a gorgeous colour Shelly! I'm a huge fan of red hair too - for 30 odd years mine has been some version of red (with a couple of peroids of pale ashy blonde). I love those intense cool reds - the wine, cherry, ruby, etc ones - since they look so good against a pale cool complexion.
Every time I wear a red lip I tell myself that I need to wear a red lip more often. I really like the shade of the KVD 10th anniversary red lip (the one I wore here), Santa Sangre.
Thank you for doing intense red. I will be doing this tomorrow. Hardly, the videos I saw previously , did not do this particular color. The color looks gerogous on you . 😍
Thanks!! This is my go-to red when I do red. It has been reliable for years and years! Most reds fade quickly on me but this one stays better than any other I've tried.
Shelley!! This red hair is a LOOK and suits you so well!! Have you considered doing it again?! I have black box dye and was looking for videos and this happened to pop up hehe
I tend to do the red every few years :-D It's a huge pain in maintenance (red doesn't stay in my hair at all) so once I forget what a pain it is I do it again 😂
The color looks SO GOOD on you -- really makes your eye color pop and your complexion look brighter. Well done! I've used Color Zap before with good results as well! I used to bleach and dye my hair A LOT but since growing it out, I've just done demi-perm colors (mostly pinks, lavenders, mauves) bc it's easier and less damaging. When my hair was pixie-short I didn't care if I fried it bc I would just chop it all off in a month, haha. Now that it's longer, I baby it a lot more.
I was nervous about the Color Zap (lol well not really.... it’s only hair) because the girl at Sally was hesitant to recommend it to me. They were out of her top choice of remover (some argan oil thing). But I’m absolutely happy with the Color Zap. I’ll totally use it again next time.
Love it. I wish I could do it, but I have a lit of white growing in, so continue to color black monthly. Tried a red/black once but the white hair showed up electric red!
Hi Shelly! I color my hair a deep burgundy, but now that I have so much gray I have to do my roots brown (my original color, lol) before I do the burgundy so I don’t end up with bright purple roots! I love how your hair color turned out!! I have never used a hair color remover, just too scared because my hair is so fine. Thanks for showing this process, it was really interesting, have a wonderful day😊🌺🌻🌈💕
@@goow Your welcome! I've recently started to color my hair and BEARD. AND am part Irish. I may try Loreal HI Color in the near future. Seeing how nicely it helped you look EVEN better!
Your hair looks awesome!!! So flattering on you! I used to go that color red years ago but the upkeep was a bitch. It’s so freaking gorgeous though. 🤔❤️
This was fun to watch and that red is gorgeous! I'm so dying to do some crazy colour in my hair, I almost bought one of those pink boxes of hair dye this morning haha I think your video may send me back to get it tomorrow!
You’re hair looks great! When you itched your nose, it made me giggle. I just dyed the underside of my hair blue. Of course, I itched my nose with my gloves on. I ended up with a blue smear that did stain a bit! Lol!
I will need to look into that color zap! I love the hair color! I should have known it was one of those intense reds. I used to dye my friend's hair the Red Hot color. 😊
I never cared about my hair until recently. I think after I get married, I’ll make up for six months of actually caring by really letting it just go for a while 🤣 I’m with you; I have better things to worry about than my hair.
Beautiful! I love how tediously you were with it, and ended up with the darker roots. Yes! We have used both the Color Oops and the Color Zap, and I agree with your opinion that the Zap is better. We typically use the Ion Color Brilliance, as my girls are REALLY into the brighter shades(my oldest goes back and forth between Rose Gold and Copper, which takes ALOT of maintenence), but my younger is the one wanting the hombre with the EXACT color red you have, only in reverse; red at the roots, graduating to black at the bottom. I think we'll go with this brand this time. Thanks for the tut!
Wow! That's good for a red. They just don't have the staying power that other colors do. I think that intensifier has something to do with that. We're definitely going to try that one.
Your hair looks phenomenal! The color is incredible. As a fellow red head, I know how hard it is to get the right color. I'm totally jealous of how thick your hair is. Mine is baby fine, and unfortunately, the red fades pretty quickly. I self color as well. Just got the Madison Reed hair dyeing kit in the mail today. Went for the Portofino Red. I believe it's a medium auburn red shade. Hope I have as good as luck as you did!! Great vidro tonight, Shelly. Enjoy your new color!!
Geek Out of Water Thanks, Shelly. Will be dyeing my hair tomorrow. I'm going to send you a coupon for a free box. I received 5 with my MR kit to share. I'll pop it in the mail tomorrow.
I am so glad to find your video I'm doing the red hot and the magenta mix I've done it before it's beautiful my friend though said to do the prel stripping 1st so I'm doing that now
My hair is brown-black naturally so if I don't bleach it (which I didn't here), it will stay a dark-toned red. I need bleach levels of lift to get anything lighter or brighter.
Hi this is the first video i've found that really talks about lighting black dyed hair...never hear of color zap but it worked great on you. I wanted to ask you did it damaged your hair at all like bleach does?
I'd say it's about the same as using a box dye in terms of damage. The Color Zap does dry my hair out a bit, but using a moisturizing mask a few times following revives it. It's not as much damage as bleaching for me, so I do Color Zap whenever possible. It doesn't work as well on semi-permanent dyes as it does on permanent dyes, so sometimes I have to resort to bleach if I'm trying to get a semi-permanent out.
So I see that the comments are from about 2 years ago so here's a updated one😋 I have been looking to color my hair red I haven't had anything done to my hair and almost about 10 months I had dyed my hair I want to stay a month before I found out I was pregnant then after that the hair color just started stripping out I'm assuming due to the prenatals my hair is super long and it's also pretty dark I'm going to try the method that you used but actually get the 30 developer 😂hopefully it Comes out the shade as yours🙏
So glad I found you! 😂I just wanted to find a like minded individual who used color zap first on dark box dyed hair and then went for red! It seems so dam simple but I guess not everyone went about it the same😂 but great minds think alike! Your hair looks so pretty! Thanks for giving me the lady balls to give it a go😆❤️❤️❤️
I've used both of those products but at different times. You don't need to color zap when you use bicolor products. It's for dark hair only because they dye lifts the color while it's processing. If you use color zap first you risk over processing your hair and drying it out or frying it. If you want a orange copper color bicolor has a copper orange color available. The red does look nice. Glad you didn't fry your hair.
Those glasses...um yes definitely sexy! My oldest daughter actually bought this color of dye for me to try. Seeing how beautiful it looks on you makes me want to try it even more!
I used Color Oops! a few years ago to get rid of a dark plum color. My hair is already dry so the stripper really damaged it further. I also have naturally dark brown hair so the stripped stage made me look like tiger stripes! I had to deep condition my hair overnight before recoloring it the next day. I prayed that I wouldn't have to leave the house for ANYTHING that entire 24 hours! :O I too remember how bad it smelled, like rotten eggs. P.u! Love the red on you, especially your lipstick! Very striking. :)
Yes! I think that the Oops damages/dries out your hair and removes the color unevenly, from what I remember. The Zap just thoroughly removes it without doing any further damage. Definitely a superior product, in my opinion.
I dyed my hair this color but only the ends and the top of my hair got that color i wanted how do i fix it to where the middle pf my hair gets that bright red?
If you have any type of box dye from whatever time, years ago, months ago, etc you need to use a hair color remover like Color Oops or Color Zap like the person in this video. Then wait until it's dry and done and then add the Hicolors with either 20 or 30 devoloper depending on how light or damaged your hair is. If it's not tooo light or damaged use 30, if it gets too light after color remover or damaged use 20
Hi Griselda! I did put it everywhere, as I didn't have a whole lot of new growth, but I'd say if you have enough new growth I'd keep it off that fresh hair.
It was just a regular rinse out - just rinse until it runs clear (which took probably 4 minutes or so). The Color Oops took forever! And now that I’ve washed my dyed hair a few times since, everything is performing as per usual (i.e. I’m not losing color any faster than any other red, so I don’t think the Color Zap impacted the deposit of the new color).
i used color oops but my roots and more are waaay lighter than the ends but i want to dye it red, should i use 30 developer for the bottom and 20 for the top? and do the same 20 min- 10 min as u?

He has a ton of info on the different developer levels and techniques for different hair scenarios (and he's a professional stylist). I do a shower cap but not heat. :)

How long did it take to fade? Did you have to touch it up often?
All reds fade on me around the 4 week mark. I usually wait 6 to touch them up but it starts getting noticeable around 4 weeks.
